Hodder & Stoughton It's Never too Late to Sleep Train: The low
Book SynopsisA revolutionary program that will have everyone - babies, toddler and pre-schoolers - in the house sleeping through the night. When Dr. Craig Canapari became a father, he realized that even three years of 36-hour hospital shifts didn't prepare him for the extreme sleep deprivation that comes with parenthood. Sleepless nights for kids means sleepless nights for the rest of the family-and a grumpy group around the breakfast table in the morning. In It's Never Too Late to Sleep Train, Canapari harnesses the power of habit to chart a clear and concise path through this crowded, noisy world. The result is a streamlined two-step sleep training plan that focuses on cues and consequences, the two elements that shape all habits and that take on special importance in the case of children. In crisp conversational prose, Dr. Canapari distils years of clinical research and experience to make sleep training refreshingly simple and stress-free. The book is aimed at children between 6 months and early primary school age, who some falsely believe are outside the optimal "window" for sleep training. Dr. Canapari is here to prove that it's never too late. He's on your side in this battle against bedtime, and now parents and children alike can expect a lifetime of healthy sleep. As recommended by Emma Bunton in Mama You Got This.

Nova Science Publishers Inc New Research on Sleep and Sleep Disorders
Book SynopsisNew Research on Sleep and Sleep Disorders first addresses how excessive daytime sleepiness is highly prevalent among patients with type 2 diabetes and has been associated with poorer glycemic control. Daytime sleepiness is also associated with cognitive and attention impairment which may lead to sub-optimal self-management and increased medication errors in patients with type 2 diabetes. Sleep dysfunction has multiple causes in critically ill patients, some of which are extrinsic to the patient and some which are intrinsic to the patient. The disruption of sleep can further destabilize a patient or complicate their ICU course. In one study, the authors use a network analysis technique to create networks for each of the four "insomnia identity" groups. These findings may help to further understand the role of daytime sleepiness in different insomnia phenotypes and to better target the clinical intervention. Additionally, the results of a Multiple Sleep Latency Test carried out in forty patients diagnosed with narcolepsy-1 are presented, and protocol is reviewed. Later, the role of upper cervical spine morphology in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea is examined. It is suggested that upper cervical spine morphology contributes to phenotypic differentiations between types of obstructive sleep apnea and thereby to its diagnosis, subdivision and treatment. Some useful knowledge obtained by analyzing the acoustic properties of snoring sounds and the morphological properties of oropharyngeal soft tissues is presented. Snoring sounds and oropharyngeal soft tissues are directly or indirectly related to the severity of sleep apnea syndrome. Many researchers are moving their attention towards the development of applications for the smartphone related to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. As such, this compilation analyzes and investigates the functionality of the most accredited apps available for smartphones. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery recommend surgery as an option for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, when non-invasive treatments such as CPAP or oral appliances have not been successful. Surgical treatment is more effective when there is an evident anatomical deformity that can be corrected to alleviate the respiratory obstruction. The concluding study focuses on drugs which induce sleep, such as propofol and dexmedetomidine. Drug-induced sedation endoscopy is a relatively simple way to explore obstruction sites during induced sleep and to give the most precise indication for surgery.

Book SynopsisSleep can be viewed as a brain state, as a process and a behavior. As any of these, sleep serves several purposes, including energy restoration, immunocompetence, brain metabolic homeostasis, neural ontogenesis and, importantly, cognitive, emotional and social processing. Supported by a strong empirical backbone focused on contemporary research outlining links between these subjects, this book will offer a guide to state-of-the-art research of sleep mechanisms, its impact in many cognitive and affective features as well as brief but in-depth overview of the strong association between sleep and social interactions. The complexity behind the common mechanisms between sleep, cognition and emotion, reveal that only through an integral approach in its study at both a neuroanatomical, functional, clinical and social level can reveal how this interplay influences human and furthermore, of mammal homeostasis as whole. Also, we intend to shed a light on the complex relationships between sleep and specific psychiatric disorders, thereby informing both prevention and clinical intervention. In order to provide clear guidance for researchers, the book also outlines future directions for the continued advancement of our understanding of sleep. We aim to balance the breadth and depth of available information to provide a resource that is accessible for upper-level seminars within academic settings, while serving as a practical guide for established scholars studying and treating conditions related to the interplay between sleep, cognition and emotion.Table of ContentsPreface; Basic Mechanisms in Sleep Regulation; Neuroendocrinology of Sleep; Effects of Menopause on Sleep-Waking Cycle; Amygdala Oscillations and Plasticity during Sleep; Altered Behavior and Cortical Activity during Sleep in Neurodegenerative Disorders and Non-Invasive Neuromodulatory Techniques as a Possible Treatment; Effects of Environmental Pollution on Sleep; Mental and Cognitive Phenomena during Sleep and Dreams; Affect, REM Sleep and Dreams: Towards Emotional Insight; Analysis of Sexual Oneiric Experiences by Gender and Sexual Orientation; Sleep Disturbances in Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Patients; Effect of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Sleep and Behavioral Disorders in Patients with Autism; Developmental Mode and REM Sleep in Mammals Show Correlated Evolution; Index.

Book SynopsisSleep breathing disorders represent one of the most important factors that influence prognosis in critical patients, directly as an initial cause or indirect process that deteriorates after admission to the Intensive Care Units. Despite this known association, there is little scientific information in key practical questions. For example, how does one approach and diagnose sleep breathing disorders in critical care medicine? How can one measure these associations in patients under non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation? During weaning from mechanical ventilation, extubation process, or prevention extubation failure, and finally, their association with short- and long-term prognosis in medical and postoperative critically patients. In this scenario, they are of great interest to understand these associations In this book, we analyse the rationale for diagnosis and treatment in critically mechanically ventilated, from non-invasive, invasive and weaning from mechanical ventilation process, treatments, protocols and follow-up patients' recommendations. The high prevalence of sleep breathing disorders increment critically mechanical ventilated patients, new forms of invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation justify as multidisciplinary perspective this book, useful for pulmonologists, critical care and anaesthesiologist.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Children and Sleep: Management, Health Effects
Book SynopsisThis book begins by delineating the measurement tools currently available to evaluate sleep problems in children and adolescents: polysomnography, actigraphy, sleep diaries, and questionnaires. Continuing, this collection unpacks the complexities of the most common sleep disorders affecting children and adolescents by discussing the child-specific features, etiology, common comorbidities, and differential diagnostic considerations pertinent for each disorder. The authors summarize the importance of a healthy sleep cycle in normal brain development during childhood and the effects of sleep disturbances on normal brain function and brain structure. Additionally, possible associations between sleep disturbances in children and emotional/behavioural problems are addressed, based on a suggestion that these symptoms are not the emerging manifestations of an underlying disorder but rather are a network of symptoms that are causally interrelated. In closing, the authors highlight the importance of identifying the causes of mouth breathing and obstructive sleep apnea in children. If left untreated, such breathing disorders can progress to more severe conditions in adulthood. Rowman & Littlefield Let's Talk about Sleep: A Guide to Understanding
Book SynopsisNews about sleep is everywhere we turn, and the statistics are numbing: Some 50-70 million Americans are affected by chronic sleep disorders and intermittent sleep problems; an estimated 30-35% of adults complain of insomnia; one in every 25 Americans takes a prescription sleep medication; more than a third of American adults don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis; sleep disorders account for an estimated $16 billion in medical costs each year, plus indirect costs due to missed days of work, decreased productivity and related factors. And questions abound: why do we need to sleep at all? What happens when we sleep? What happens to the brain? We know the brain is active when we sleep, but what about the mind? And what are dreams? An accessible and lively take on sleep, this book provides answers to those and other key questions. Along the way, it highlights the lessons a well-known neurologist has learned and what he shares with his patients on a daily basis. It discusses — in terms everyone can understand — what we know about sleep, what can go wrong with it, and what we can do to fix it. It also delves into what some of the great scientists and spiritual teachers have told us about sleep. The book is packed with useful information and suggestions that will improve all aspects of readers’ lives.Trade ReviewThorough and informative, Barone’s book invites readers to get a better night’s sleep by becoming more engaged with a seemingly passive process. Barone, a neurologist specializing in sleep disorders, addresses readers in a calm and helpful tone, asking them to consider their own situations and stressing that he does not intend the book to constitute a treatment plan or replacement for consulting a physician. Moreover, he emphasizes, everyone’s sleep is unique, and so possible solutions for sleep issues that he discusses include apps, 'natural' remedies, devices like CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines, and medications, but he says that there’s no single answer that will work for everyone. His most consistent suggestion is to improve sleep hygiene, meaning a person’s habits around going to sleep. His tips for achieving improved sleep hygiene include not using electronics for at least 30 minutes before bedtime and going to sleep at the same time every night. Testimonies from Barone’s former patients appear in each chapter and cover an array of issues, among them apnea, insomnia, and even restless-leg syndrome. The variety of options for improving sleep that are discussed, along with Barone’s considerate tone, will put many readers’ minds to rest. * Publishers Weekly *A good night’s sleep is often taken for granted, but its lack can lead to a variety of health problems. In this accessible study, Barone, a sleep specialist, examines what is known about sleep, what can go wrong, and what you can do to to fix it. He begins with ‘sleep hygiene tips,’ suggestions that include having a consistent bedtime, keeping the bedroom dark and cool, shutting off ‘blue light’ devices an hour before bed, and trying meditation. He uses patients’ medical histories to define sleep disorders (sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, etc.). As he analyzes their stories, Barone offers various behavioral and medical solutions. The doctor admits that medications often have side effects and that people have difficulties adapting to sleep apparatus, including CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines, and experience fear of sleep testing, but he urges anyone who awakes without feeling rested to talk to a specialist. Informative without being alarming, this reassuring guide helps readers assess and take charge of their sleep issues. * Booklist *Barone has produced a lively, lucid overview of what we know about sleep and how to improve it, drawing upon his experience as an assistant professor of neurology at Weill Cornell Medical College/New York Presbyterian Hospital and a specialist in sleep medicine. * Fordham Magazine *Let’s Talk About Sleep: A Guide to Understanding and Improving Your Slumber is an empathetic resource book for sleep deprivation sufferers, a problem that afflicts a huge number of Americans. . . Public, high school, middle school, and college libraries will benefit by including this book in their collection. * American Reference Books Annual *Sleep medicine is still, very much, the Wild West of medicine. Venturing into sleep medicine, therefore, requires both a reliable map and a trustworthy scout. In Let’s Talk About Sleep, Dr. Daniel Barone and Lawrence Armour utilize medical research, story-telling and clinical experience to create a very helpful map of the principles and practice of sleep medicine. Coach House Books Bright Eyed: Insomnia and Its Cultures
Book SynopsisFor forty years, RM Vaughan has been fighting, and failing, to get his forty winks each night. He's not alone, not by any stretch. More and more studies highlight the health risks of undersleeping, yet we have never been asked to do more, and for longer. And we can’t stop thinking that a lack of sleep is heroic: snoozing is a kind of laziness, after all. But why, when we know more about the value of sleep, are we obsessed with twenty--four--hour workdays and deliberate sleep deprivation? Working outward from his own experience, Vaughan explores this insomnia culture we’ve created, predicting a cultural collision will we soon have to legislate rest, as France has done? and wondering about the cause--and--effect model of our shorter attention spans. Does the fact that we are almost universally underslept change how our world works? We know it’s an issue with, say, pilots and truck drivers, but what about artists does an insomnia culture change creativity? And what are the long-term cultural consequences of this increasing sacri?ce for the ever-elusive goal of total productivity’? RM Vaughan ... [is] easily amongst the top ?ve art critics working today. I’ve seen Vaughan turn phrases that have the forcefulness of Christian Viveros Faune, the plainspoken insight of Dave Hickey, and the lyricism of Peter Schjeldahl. American Psychiatric Association Publishing Clinical Manual for Evaluation and Treatment of Sleep Disorders
Book SynopsisThe Clinical Manual for Evaluation and Treatment of Sleep Disorders is the first clinical text devoted solely to the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders that is both comprehensive and conveniently portable. The book's 13 chapters offer a concise, step-by-step method of differential diagnosis for some of the most common sleep complaints encountered in today's professional clinical practices. And, unlike most other clinical textbooks, its small size gives it a broad accessibility. The manual begins with an overview of sleep physiology and pathology, including eight common laboratory procedures and three major diagnostic nomenclatures for sleep disorders. Each of the chapters that follow provides an overview of symptoms, tests, and various behavioral and pharmacologic treatments for a wide range of sleep conditions, including insomnias, breathing disorders, parasomnias, and several common medical disorders that are often associated with sleep complaints. The latter chapters discuss sleep disorders in distinct patient demographics—specifically children, women (during pregnancy, the postpartum period, and menopause) and the increasing population of older adults. The book concludes with a chapter devoted to pharmacologic interventions, detailing the use of and clinical issues associated with 25 different types of drugs. Additional benefits of the manual include: • A "Pearls and Pitfalls" section of bulleted facts at the beginning of each chapter• Figures, tables, and helpful takeaways (such as a differential diagnosis decision tree and patient questionnaires) in many chapters• An appendix of 65 frequently used abbreviations related to sleep complaints and disorders• Patient handouts that include sleep tips and information on insomnia, abdominal breathing, delayed sleep phase syndrome, melatonin and light treatments, sleep walking, and jet lag No other clinical text provides such a breadth of information on sleep disorders in such a compact, easy-to-carry volume. Its extensive content makes this book ideal for nursing, psychiatric, social work, and family practice settings, as well as a useful teaching implement in medical classrooms. Nova Science Publishers Inc Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Research Trends
Book SynopsisSleep apnea or sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder characterised by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, "without breath"), each last long enough so one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep. There are two distinct forms of sleep apnea: Central and Obstructive. Breathing is interrupted by the lack of effort in Central Sleep Apnea, but from a physical block to airflow despite effort in Obstructive Sleep Apnea. In Mixed Sleep Apnea, both types of events occur. Regardless of type, the individual affected with sleep apnea is rarely (if ever) aware of having difficulty breathing, even upon awakening. Sleep apnea is recognised as a problem by others witnessing the individual during episodes, or is suspected because of its effects on the body (sequelae). This book presents important new research in this field.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Snoring: Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment
Book SynopsisSnoring is a common symptom of airway obstruction, which is included in the spectrum of sleep-related breathing disorders. The manifestation may occur alone (primary snoring) or in association with other signs and symptoms such as rhinorrhea, hyponasal speech, cough, hypopnea, and sleep apnea. Furthermore, snoring in the paediatric population is increasing and has been identified as a primary health concern by the American Academy of Paediatrics. This increase has been associated with a rise in co-morbid disease processes such as asthma and allergies, lifestyle changes and increasing changes and increasing obesity in the paediatric population. This book examines the clinical picture, aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of snoring in paediatric patients. A thorough review of the literature data on the efficacy of the different types of intraoral devices used in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea (OSAH) is also assessed, as well as the two common urological consequences in OSA patients, namely Erectile Dysfunction (ED) and nocturia. Other topics discussed in this book include the underlying etiologic factors associated with sleep disordered breathing (SDB), a review of diagnostic studies that have been used to assess upper airway anatomy in patients with sleep-disordered breathing and a discussion of a multi-disciplinary approach taken to address the interaction of etiological components associated with SDB, to identify the causative agent(s) in specific individuals seeking definitive resolution.

Book SynopsisObstructive sleep apnea is a disorder characterised by repetitive, complete or partial closure of the upper airway during sleep. Many factors, including craniofacial abnormalities, influence upper airway obstruction during sleep. Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is related to different combinations of anatomical and functional aspects that produce the airway collapse in individual patients. To compensate for the craniofacial abnormalities and treat sleep apnea, there are some dental and maxillofacial surgical modalities. In this book, treatment and research of SAS are described mainly from clinical and neurophysiological aspects in the stomatognathic system.

New Harbinger Publications Goodnight Mind: Turn Off Your Noisy Thoughts and
Book SynopsisDo you find yourself lying awake at night, ruminating about the events of the day? Do you toss and turn, worrying about what you have to do in the morning or what you did earlier in the day? If so, you are not alone. In fact, insomnia is the most common sleep disorder faced by the general population today. The most common complaint in those who have trouble sleeping is having a "noisy mind." Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, it seems like you cannot silence all the internal dialogue. So what do you do when your mind is spinning and your thoughts just won't stop?Accessible, enjoyable, and grounded in evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Goodnight Mind directly addresses the effects of rumination-or having an overactive brain-on your ability to sleep well.Written by two psychologists who specialize in sleep disorders, the book contains helpful exercises and insights into how you can better manage your thoughts at bedtime, and finally get some sleep. Traditional treatment for insomnia is usually focused on medications that promote sedation rather than on the behavioral causes of insomnia. Unfortunately, medication can often lead to addiction, and a host of other side effects. This is a great a book for anyone who is looking for effective therapy to treat insomnia without the use of medication. This informative, small-format book is easy-to-read and lightweight, making it perfect for late-night reading.

Just reading it made me want to change the quality of my sleep. I was particularly interested in the role of sleep on the immune system, on functions like host resistance against infection, which I contend adds years to life. Good sleep is truly a mind-body-spirit model for excellent health. I was entertained by his many anecdotes to which anyone could relate, as well as his ability to make the most complex neurology of sleep easy to understand. Finally, I learned much from this book about sleep and its relationship to disease.” — Robert G. Lahita, MD, Director of St. Joseph's Institute for Autoimmune and Rheumatic Diseases and Bestselling Author of Immunity Strong "Too many of us take our sleep for granted. The stories, strategies, and inspiration in SLEEP TO HEAL are the motivation you need to finally take action." — Roy Hibbert, two-time NBA All-Star"Dr. Singh makes a captivating argument in Sleep to Heal: that sleep may be the secret weapon your competitors are not using (yet). By weaving together memorable patient anecdotes with the latest in sleep research, all the while offering encouragement to readers, Dr. Singh shows how sleep heals our bodies and minds, and how it links to success on the court, in the office, at home. Everyone needs great sleep—but sleep can especially benefit pro athletes, who are always looking for that extra edge to stay on top of their game. If you want to understand not just why we need sleep, but also how to make sleep work for you, you won’t find a more essential guide than SLEEP TO HEAL. Whether you play a professional sport or not, this inspiring and motivating book is a must-read. It will bring a whole new awareness to how you structure your days—and your nights." — Kevin Pritchard, President, Indiana Pacers “I am always amazed how something we do a third of our life seems to be taken for granted. In my 30-plus years of practicing medicine, I have found no medicine or treatment more regenerative than the power of good sleep. SLEEP TO HEAL will be a valuable tool for me to help my patients achieve peak physical and mental performance and new levels of wellness.” — Steven Samuels, MD, internist, and team physician for the NBA Indiana Pacers“We are always trying to stay on the cutting edge of health and performance practice for our athletes and staff. Adding and utilizing Dr. Singh has been invaluable for us. His knowledge and passion for sleep science is evident in practice and in this book. In addition to being an expert in the field, he is able to connect with non-medical people in a very effective way. I highly recommend everyone read this who wants to solve a problem or gain an advantage.” — Josh Corbeil, Head Athletic Trainer/Director of Medical Operations for the Indiana Pacers“SLEEP TO HEAL is wonderfully written. It is a public health primer on the healing nature of quality sleep that reads as part history, part coming-of-(professional)-age story, part peer-reviewed medical literature, and part real-life medical vignettes, all skillfully woven together with folksy anecdotes and relatable analogies such that the reader cannot help but be richly entertained while still being educated. This book makes the compelling case for each of us to utilize simple tools at our disposal to take full advantage of what nature tries to teach us. All would be wise—and will live longer and better—to heed sage medical advice springing from lessons of nature still being discovered.” — Dr. Bill Buffie, internist, former CEO of IIMC, Indiana’s largest multispecialty physician group, and author“Lessons learned from reading SLEEP TO HEAL: I have a terrible ZQ, and I’m not taking my sleep elevator to the right floor. There are many actions you can take that make you a successful entrepreneur, and getting enough sleep is one of them. Until I read SLEEP TO HEAL, that advice would have fallen into the ‘do as I say, not as I do’ category. But this book has already positively impacted my life, making me more aware and alert and revitalizing my business by awakening my brain. I’m certain it can do the same for you and your small business!” — Rieva Lesonsky, award-winning small business journalist, advocate, bestselling author, and founder GrowBiz Media, and SmallBusinessCurrents.com“I am so thankful my friend wrote SLEEP TO HEAL. Dr. Singh is an exceptional doctor whose passion for our health and a life filled with joy is undeniable. Sleep is where it all starts and ends. I have learned so much about my own health and have taken his advice to heart. The impact of technology was a big one for me, and learning about how my body heals with sleep has been life-changing for my family. So many struggle with something we can all get for free. Dr. Singh and his knowledge can change the world.” — Angela Ganote, news anchor for Fox59 Morning News, Indiana’s #1 rated show“Dr. Singh’s book, SLEEP TO HEAL, should be part of every human’s survival kit. Despite sleep being an integral part of our biologic need, we, as modern-day beings, have often viewed sleep deprivation as a badge of honor; a notion which is being challenged by Dr. Singh’s exhaustive work in the field. Despite sleep being a primitive physiologic activity, the science of sleep is a young one. On a personal focus, the link between sleep and cardiovascular health is beautifully illustrated with the data he cites from well-conducted observational studies. Dr. Singh walks us through the work done in the field of sleep expressed in language that is easily ascertained and gives us panoplies of foundational advice to maximize our individual relationships with sleep to attain what we all strive for: a full, well-rested life which allows us to impact the lives of others in an effective, efficient manner.” — Atul R. Chugh, MD, FACC; managing partner, Indiana Heart Physicians; cardiovascular investigator, author, and educator"In an era of wellness initiatives that center around nutrition and exercise, along comes a book that enlightens us about a pillar of health that has been largely ignored by the medical community since time immemorial. In SLEEP TO HEAL, Dr. Singh sheds light on topics that have material impact on reducing errors in fields like medicine and aviation. Optimizing sleep may very well be the magic pill we have been searching for to heal our collective ails!" — S.R. Srinivasan, MD, ICU physician, and certified flight instructor“This highly engaging book, full of patient stories and anecdotes from the author’s own life, is a must-read for all those who need sleep. The easy-to-read book gives concrete steps to help us obtain something important we all know we need: sleep. Still need motivation? The chapter “50 Ways Sleep Makes You Happy” is excellent. Dr. Singh shares his infectious enthusiasm about the subject of sleep and draws readers in gently but persuasively. Skyhorse Publishing Sleepwalker: The Mysterious Makings and Recovery
Book SynopsisI came to in the middle of it, like waking inside a horror movie, silent scream and all. Eyes wide open. I was standing at an open window, staring at the dizzying curve of Riverside Drive, five floors below. I’d stopped, somehow, poised, about to jump.Growing up the good girl in an Irish American family full of drinkers and terrible sleepers, Kathleen Frazier was twelve when her seemingly innocent sleepwalking turned dangerous. Over the next few years, she was a popular A+ student by day, the star of her high school musical. At night, she both longed for and dreaded sleep.Frazier moved to Manhattan in the 1980s, hoping for a life in the theater but getting a run of sleepwalking performances instead. Efforts to abate her malady with drinking failed miserably. She became promiscuous, looking for nighttime companionship. Could a bed partner save her from flinging herself down a flight of stairs or out an open window? Exhaustion stalked her, and rest and love were seemingly out of reach. This is the journey Frazier illuminates in her intimate memoir. While highlighting her quest to beat her sleep terrors and insomnia, this is ultimately a story of health, hope, and redemption.Trade Review"Some children are afraid of the dark or of monsters under their beds. But once Frazier started having sleepwalking episodes and night terrors, she had a very palpable reason to fear falling asleep. Over the next 20 years, as she recounts in this harrowing memoir, her anxiety over sleepwalking stole into every corner of her life, affecting her relationships and leading her to drink heavily in a futile attempt to keep the dangers of the night at bay. At times her sleepwalking put her in real danger, and even led to serious injuries, but the physical toll paled in comparison to the mental anguish she endured. While she rhapsodically relates her thrill at discovering her place on the stage as a career, she also acknowledges that during her young adulthood she was stalked by sleeplessness. As much an exploration of the harmful legacy from an unacknowledged family history of addiction and mental illness as an account of dealing with an unexplained sleep disorder, Frazier’s memoir records her search for the roots of her episodes as she memorably captures the tedium and terror of nights spent dreading sleep." Booklist"Kathleen Frazier has a story to tell and she knows how to tell it. Sleepwalker is a terrifying, compelling, and fascinating tale that takes us deep into the horrors of sleep walking and then reveals to us how the author managed to end a twenty-year nightmare." Ellen Burstyn, award-winning actress, writer, teacherKathleen Frazier is a gifted storyteller. In addition to providing insight into what chronic sleepwalking is like firsthand, this story also tells of a dysfunctional family, alcoholism, heartbreak, and tragedy. But there is love, light, laughter, and, above all, hope. This book will keep you awake and alert to the end.” Malachy McCourt, New York Times bestselling author of A Monk Swimming"Kathleen Frazier's Sleepwalker is a powerful and poignant account of her awakening from a long night of fear and self-doubt into the light of recovery and self-awareness. Her soulful combination of insight and unflinching honesty fills every page. This is a book that will inspire as well as enlighten." Peter Quinn, winner of the American Book Award"Sleepwalker is a brave, moving, frightening, and ultimately hopeful memoir.
