Taschen GmbH 1000 Record Covers
Book SynopsisRecord covers are a sign of our life and times. Like the music on the discs, they address such issues as love, life, death, fashion, and rebellion. For music fans the covers are the expression of a period, of a particular time in their lives. Many are works of art and have become as famous as the music they stand for—Andy Warhol's covers, for example, including the banana he designed for The Velvet Underground. This edition of Record Covers presents a selection of the best rock album covers of the 60s to 90s from music archivist, disc jockey, journalist, and former record-publicity executive Michael Ochs’s enormous private collection. Both a trip down memory lane and a study in the evolution of cover art, this is a sweeping look at an underappreciated art form.Trade Review“Vinyl revival? Red Planet Publishing Ltd The Dead Straight Pocket Guide To Ska
Book SynopsisSka originated in Jamaica in the late Fifties and combined Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and r 'n' b. Ska developed in the Sixties with artists such as Prince Buster, Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd, and Duke Reid who formed sound systems to play American rhythm and blues and then began recording their own songs. Ska was popular with British mods and was later adopted by many skinheads. As music changed in the US, so did ska. In 1965 and 1966, when American soul music became slower and smoother, ska changed its sound accordingly and developed into rocksteady before evolving again from 1968 into reggae.

Sonicbond Publishing Emerson, Lake & Palmer : Every Album, Every Song
Book SynopsisEmerson, Lake & Palmer were, without question, one of the great rock bands of the 1970s. Selling millions of albums across the globe, with all three members winning awards for their dazzling musical ability, ELP were no ordinary group. Their pioneering attitude was adored by their legions of fans, none more so than in the USA, where they toured widely. Despite ELP being the embodiment of the dinosaurs that punk sought to kill. However, just like their peers – Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd – they survived punk’s onslaught, continuing to make albums until the mid-90s and touring right until their final concert, a headlining performance at London’s High Voltage Festival in 2010. This book charts their rise, via every track on all nine of their studio albums recorded between 1970 and 1994 including Tarkus, Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery. Key recorded live performances – such as 1971’s Pictures at an Exhibition – are also included as well as overviews on all three member’s solo projects, With informed insight and information, this is the ultimate guide to the band’s music – a must-own companion to Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s recorded legacy.

Scarecrow Press Serge Chaloff A Musical Biography and Discography
Book SynopsisSimosko details the life and music of Serge Chaloff in an engaging style, from his childhood in Boston, Massachusetts, through his untimely death in 1957. He also provides a discography of Chaloff's recorded output, much of which has been made available by the 1993 Mosaic Records release of The Complete Serge Chaloff Sessions.Trade ReviewMusically, it is hard to consider a young saxophonist 'serious' if they haven't heard the Chaloff recordings, especially if he or she is a baritone sax player. The live performances documented throughout this book provide further insights about how much in demand Chaloff was, particularly after he left Herman in 1949. But since almost half of this book is a very detailed and thorough discography, it really affirms just how prolific Chaloff was. For these reasons, the book is important for many readers. * Jazz Educators Journal *The author has done a good job of balancing the musical legacy with the personal story, placing the accent on the former. * The IAJRC Journal *...highly recommended for all jazz collections and most academic and special music libraries. * American Reference Books Annual *

Scarecrow Press Recent American Art Song
Book SynopsisRecent American Art Song: A Guide is a reference source devoted to songs with English texts by American composers, written for solo voice and piano. The book focuses exclusively on art song since 1980, a substantial period largely ignored by scholars. This is the first study to examine this repertory in detail, and many of the songs and composers are discussed in print for the first time. Keith E. Clifton has examined approximately 1000 songs by nearly 200 composers. Many songs employ musical idioms well beyond traditional classical styles, including references to jazz, musical theater, rap, and rock & roll, and several songs blur the boundaries between recital and stage works. Organized alphabetically by composer, entries contain complete biographical and bibliographical information, with major works and links to print resources and composer websites when available. In addition, Clifton provides detailed information on the vocal range, musical style, and appropriate voice type for inTrade ReviewMuch needed to call attention to what has been written and how to find it. This volume will be useful in all colleges and universities where voice is taught and art song encouraged....Recommended. Two-star review. * CHOICE, March 2009 *Recent American Art Song fills a void in repertoire resources. Every university library should own this volume, and teachers who wish to explore new repertoire will find this a useful and reasonably priced addition to their studios. * Journal of Singing, March/April 2009 *Everything represented here was composed in the last quarter-century, and it is high time this segment of the repertoire receive its official due. Scarecrow Press Dmitri Shostakovich Catalogue
Book SynopsisDmitri Shostakovich (1906-75) was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, as well as the first major Soviet composer. In the fourth edition of Dmitri Shostakovich Catalogue: The First Hundred Years and Beyond, Derek C. Hulme names and describes all known musical compositions of the Russian composer. More than 175 major works are annotated and discussed, including such comprehensive details as titles and subtitles, dates of composition, instrumentation, and duration; information on dedications and premieres; arrangements by the composer and others; publication details; notes on bibliographical references and the location of the autograph score; and comprehensive chronological lists of vinyl, compact disc, and visual recordings. The entries are presented chronologically and by opus number, while indexes of names and compositions provide full accessibility. Several appendixes supplement the volume, guiding readers to further information in published sources and providing infoTrade ReviewThe fourth edition of UK-based independent scholar Hulme's catalogue represents the culmination of his efforts on behalf of Shostakovich. The first edition appeared in 1982, and revised editions were published in 1991 (CH, Dec'91, 29-1865) and 2002. This revised fourth edition is truly a treasure trove of factual information about composition dates, autograph manuscripts, published scores, and recordings. The chronological lists of recordings are almost exhaustive in their comprehensiveness (exceptions include recordings of popular works issued in limited distribution). The cut-off date is 2006, but many recordings issued in the following two years are listed. The extensive bibliography contains brief annotations. Although Hulme continues his practice of intermingling works with opus numbers with Sans Op. numbers, he understands that this arrangement is problematic and hopes that a professional musicologist will compile a definitive catalogue of works in chronological order. The simplified index of compositions is arranged strictly according to genre. Hulme's work will serve researchers' needs adequately. Recommended. Academic and large public libraries; lower-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers, and general readers. * CHOICE, September 2010 *The author presents very detailed data, even where Shostakovich was at the time he composed certain of his works. Hulme has compiled one of the most comprehensive catalogs of a twentieth-century composer. * American Reference Books Annual, May 2010 *Hulme’s catalogue is the most comprehensive one available, and it is impressive in its scope. It is most useful for its extensive discography, and as an English-language starting point for those interested in Shostakovich’s music. . . .In sum, Hulme’s catalogue is well-organized, easy to use, and informative for scholars, performers, and the ever-increasing general audiences of Shostakovich’s music, which captures the hopes and fears not only of his era but also of our own. It is recommended for academic and large public libraries. * Music Reference Services Quarterly *

Scarecrow Press American Art Song and American Poetry
Book SynopsisPublished 50 years after the last major treatment of American art song, the first edition of the three-volume American Art Song and American Poetry was the first work to fully consider the musical settings of American poetry. Ruth Friedberg''s monumental study was undertaken as a partial remedy to examine American song, from Edward Macdowell up through 1980. In the first edition, Friedberg focused on the interrelationship between the composer and the poet and the ways in which this influenced the completed song. Pieces selected for inclusion had the dual function of recognizing the importance of contributions to the performing literature as well as illuminating phases of America''s cultural past.In this second edition, now published in a convenient, one-volume format, Ruth Friedberg and Robin Fisher have updated the entries on composers and poets from the first edition and added new individuals to both categories. New composers appearing in this volume include Florence Price, Lee HoibyTrade ReviewFor the second edition of this critically acclaimed work on the American art song, Friedberg and Fisher have combined all three volumes of Friedberg's earlier work (v. 1, CH, Mar'82; v. 2, CH, Mar'85; v. 3, CH, Sep'87) into one large book, supplemented by the addition of ten composers born after the midcentury mark. The make-up of each chapter remains the same: short biographical sketches of composer and poet, followed by a discussion of one or more poems and their musical settings. Although the limited number of works by each composer is hardly sufficient to gain insight into his or her style or aesthetic, the important addition of some of the most popular song composers currently working today--among them Libby Larsen, Jake Heggie, and Ricky Ian Gordon--makes the acquisition of the new edition worthwhile. The revised format--the pages and font are bigger--also improves the readability of the work. This book can easily lay claim to being the most important work on the subject available today. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals. * CHOICE *Performers, vocal and instrumental, will find this volume useful. * American Reference Books Annual *American Art Song and American Poetry is an outstanding resource. The research is exemplary, the information is shared in a clear and eloquent style, and it is convenient to have all the information contained in a single compendium. Singers who have only a nodding acquaintance with this literature will be piqued to explore it, while those familiar with this repertoire will be tempted to revisit these milestones of American song, and perhaps discover composers and settings new to them. * Journal of Singing *The book could serve as an ideal textbook for university song literature courses focused on the American art song. It would also function well as a resource guide for singers and pianists who are studying or performing works from the genre. Those with an appreciation for the art song, American music or American poetry, and who might wish to survey the literature, would also benefit greatly from the book. . . .The authors’ knowledge of the subject matter is unequivocally excellent, and the book is expertly put together. * American Music Teacher *Table of ContentsForeword Introduction 1 A Nation Finds Its Voice Edward MacDowell William Dean Howells Charles M. Scarecrow Press Paul Whiteman
Book SynopsisTrade Review[P]rint resources on Whiteman’s career have concurrently lagged behind; Don Rayno’s work in both this book and it predecessor, Paul Whiteman: Pioneer in American Music, 1890-1930, helps in a big way to bring Whiteman’s life and output into crisper focus. ... Rayno pulls all of the elements that made up Whiteman’s career together in a scrupulous and comprehensive way. ... Rayno does include a day by day Chronology of Whiteman’s activities which include all of the individual airdates of Whiteman’s radio programs, and this should serve as a “bible” for those who are out seeking transcriptions and home recorded discs of Whiteman’s radio work. * ARSC Journal *This is more than just a biography or a discography. There are 346 pages of test, followed by 110 pages of “notes” and nearly half the book is the “Appendix”, which not only has a complete discography for the years covered, but 36 pages of bios of the musicians who played in Whiteman’s orchestra. Owners of Volume 1 will certainly want this one, and it belongs in every research library. * In The Groove *I predict that this present volume and the first will be the definitive work on the life of Paul Whiteman. What more could be done except a socio-psychological analysis of Whiteman’s personality? * Jazz Society of Pensacola *Don Rayno’s account is exhaustive, long, well written, should be the last word on Whiteman and, more importantly, should help to right some of the critical wrongs perpetrated in the past. * Jazz Journal *Rayno’s work is admirably thorough, the official record of one of the 20th century’s key musical figures. * Raleigh News and Observer *Very readable and remarkably detailed. * L.A. Jazz Scene *Picking up the Whiteman story from the early years of the Great Depression, Don Rayno carries it through the decades to the great orchestra leader’s death at seventy-seven in 1967…. Paul Whiteman: Pioneer in American Music, 1930-1967 Volume 2 (and its earlier volume 1) is a major work of scholarship and a grand and spectacular contribution to American biographical letters. -- W. Scarecrow Press Still the Greatest The Essential Songs of the
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewIn this creative history of the solo careers of John, Paul, George, and Ringo, Jackson reimagines the artists’ individual output into “fantasy albums” that could have been put out had the Fab Four remained an intact group—“The Beatles Albums That Should Have Been” (which would have made a fine subtitle). Nearly 200 songs have been cherry-picked, with extensive information offered, such as musicians, chart history, story behind the creation of the song, and the meaning of the lyrics. The chummy tone and the sheer subjectiveness make this unsuitable as a reference work but loads of fun for Beatles fans. * Booklist *The celebration of the Fab Four's 50th anniversary continues with Still the Greatest: The Essential Songs of the Beatles' Solo Careers. Author Andrew Grant Jackson, a music journalist and filmmaker, delves into the more than 70 albums and 900 songs collectively unveiled by John, Paul, George and Ringo since they disbanded 42 years ago. "There are a dozen brilliant Beatles albums to be carved out of their solo albums," Jackson has observed. Included, too, are collaborations with other icons such as Phil Spector, Eric Clapton, Elton John and Elvis Costello. * USA Today *Analysis, commentary, and biography on the Beatles abound, but relatively little has been written about John, Paul, George, and Ringo’s post-Beatles recordings. Freelance music writer Jackson’s first book spotlights what he considers the best of the ex-Beatles’ oft-underrated post-1970 recordings as solo artists, and as members of Wings and the Plastic Ono Band. Jackson, an obvious Beatles fanatic, compiles his chosen cuts into 12 fictitious albums spread across the past 40 years. Jackson critiques and analyzes each song and puts it into biographical context, adding detailed studio session information, recording credits, and sales-chart peaks. The analyses are insightful and informed, with the author relying heavily on previous scholarship and interviews with the ex-Beatles and associates, and adding his own strong opinions. Jackson admirably digs beneath the obvious hits to uncover and discuss deep album tracks, commercial flops, and rare b-sides. Ringo fans will be delighted by Jackson’s insistence on finding room on each “album” for at least one of the funny Beatle’s tracks....VERDICT This creative, enlightening, and informative work by a welcomed entrant to Beatles scholarship is highly recommended to anyone interested in learning more about the Fab Four’s sporadically great post-breakup recordings. * Library Journal *Overall, it's an interesting take on what might have been; an imaginary glimpse of what The Beatles may have released to the world as a group had they remained together....Going over each track with a fine-toothed comb, Jackson not only gives us details of where each Beatle was at that stage of their career but also what lead them there. On top of that he includes extensive production details for each song, including session musicians and where and when it was recorded. * Examiner *Still the Greatest is a very interesting and creative look at The Beatles’ solo careers, and makes for a more enjoyable read than a typical reference volume. Still the Greatest is an excellent volume and definitely a worthwhile read for music scholars, music enthusiasts, or fans of The Beatles. * American Reference Books Annual *If God is truly in the details, this exhaustive second-act gospel radiates holy ghostliness. * The Austin Chronicle *[This book] skillfully manages to blend in the right amounts of reference material and imagination to make this one of the most enjoyable Beatles books in years … An inevitable yet delightful by-product of reading the book is the “I’d have chosen this song instead of that one” factor (witness the author’s presentation in front of a captive audience at the recent Fest for Beatles Fans in Chicago) … And while subjectivity naturally comes into play here, Jackson demonstrates not only a solid knowledge of post-Beatles history, but he astutely balances the biographical back story for each of the songs as well. Beyond the musicians’ credits, release dates, chart positions and such, he captures the songs’ essence eloquently … Aesthetically, Jackson demonstrates an uncanny ability to turn words (his, and the artists) into mini aural landscapes in his descriptions of the songs’ musicality. His take on “Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey” paints a picture of the sound so vivid that if one had never heard the actual record, they could virtually imagine it quite precisely. Jackson demonstrates a deft command of pop/rock culture as well, connecting the dots beyond the Beatles’ world … Intellectually stimulating and at the same time lots of fun, this one should be on every Beatle fan’s bookshelf. * Beatlefan Magazine *Great addition to any Beatles library. * Houston Press *I love his book. Over the course of 300 or so pages, Jackson explores the high points from the solo careers of John, Paul, George and Ringo. More than simply presenting release dates, recording info and chart positions, Jackson delves into the inspiration for the lyrics and where the key players were at in those moments. It's a new take on a much-chronicled band. -- Bobby Tanzilo, OnMilwaukee.comAndrew Grant Jackson gives us an indispensable book with the inside story of the second career of the Beatles. The most exciting aspect-the stories of each song and the unusual motives of the writers. The book is a winner! -- Larry Kane, author of Ticket to Ride and Lennon RevealedI’m happy to be able to recommend a new book by a man with the interesting name of Andrew Grant Jackson and it’s called Still the Greatest: The Essential Songs of the Beatles’ Solo Careers. Many of us were traumatized by the breakup of the Beatles and you would not believe how often it keeps coming up in my class on the culture and politics of the seventies. The fellow is pretty smart and the book is wonderfully well researched … With the Beatles having been covered to death, this is really new territory, at least for me … It’s really both quite fun and impressive, though he does not hate the songs I hate and I find this a bit unnerving, given how on the ball he is otherwise. Do I really need to rethink My Love?” -- Eric Alterman, The NationJackson (independent scholar) bases his chronological study of the Beatles' solo careers on the idea that solo tracks recorded after the Beatles' breakup can be grouped into theoretical Beatles albums. Each tune included in his list of essentials receives detailed and knowledgeable commentary covering session locations and dates, personnel, production credits, release information, and UK and US chart positions. Themes emerge, linking the solo outputs of the various Beatles to evolving trends in pop music. Jackson's treatment of each band member is evenhanded and appreciative, and his book succeeds in inspiring readers, both serious fans and novices, to return to the recordings. This volume does not aim to replace or supersede The Beatles Solo on Apple Records, compiled by Bruce Spizer (2005), but it ably supplements this key resource. Jackson's commentary situating the output of solo members of the Beatles within contemporary music is particularly enlightening. This one-of-a-kind study of a cultural phenomenon discusses 70-plus albums and some 900 songs. Excellent appendix; discographies. Summing Up: Recommended. Collections emphasizing contemporary pop music; general readers. * CHOICE *"The Beatles was just the beginning--the four fabs had extensive solo careers. Here, a comparison." * Sunday Denver Post *

Scarecrow Press Pepper Adams Joy Road
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewIn 1984, while recuperating from a leg injury, baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams was visited by Gary Carner, who was at the time a City College of New York graduate student researching a thesis on Adams’ life and works. The temporarily incapacitated Adams was happy to relate stories to his student biographer, but plans to publish his memoirs were shelved when Adams was diagnosed with lung cancer. Adams passed away in 1986, and while he did see a version of Carner’s manuscript, it’s doubtful he would have imagined the massive collection of material Carner has released 26 years after the saxophonist’s death. First is an annotated discography “Pepper Adams’ Joy Road” (Scarecrow) which in its 552 pages lists Adams’ entire recorded history, including unissued sessions dating back to 1947, and several filmed appearances. In addition, Carner produced a series of recordings that present all 43 of Adams’ compositions, and commissioned lyrics for seven of the ballads. * Jazz History Online *This book is peppered with interviews with Adams and other great musicians as well as vignettes drawn from the author's conversations with Adams. There are many behind-the-scenes anecdotes of other famous musicians, including john Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, and Duke Pearson....This first comprehensive discography to the works of Pepper Adams is a valuable addition to the jazz research literature. * American Reference Books Annual *A 2012 Holiday Gift Guide Choice! This book is a comprehensive listing of the baritone saxophonist's recordings, often expanded upon with illuminating comments and interviews. * Hothouse Jazz Magazine *This is an overwhelming work of research that goes well beyond the usual concept of a discography, or even annotated discography. Carner’s dedication to documenting this under-honored musical giant shines throughout the book. Fans of Adams and jazz will be both greatly satisfied, and left wanting more as Carner finishes what will surely be a masterful biography. * ARSC Journal *In recent years a few exemplary discographies have appeared that enhance the original purpose of the discography (namely, to list recordings) by adding information of a biographical nature or details about the music. Gary Carner’s thick work on baritone saxophone player Pepper Adams belongs to this new species of discographies that provide much more than dates and facts. In the mid-1980s Carner worked together with Adams on his autobiography and after Adams died in 1986, Carner interviewed many of Adams’s colleagues that had either made music with him or met him in the studio. With the help of many friends of discography he discovered several unpublished recordings…. Carner’s Pepper Adams’ Joy Road is a definitive book on baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams. * Jazzinstitut Darmstadt *When I received a copy of Pepper Adams’ Joy Road, I opened it at random, out of curiosity. I had not been terribly involved in Adams’ work — coming from a long immersion in Harry Carney and Ernie Caceres, among others. But I stood in the middle of the living room, reading eagerly for a half hour, before remembering that a) I could sit down, and b) other tasks had to be taken care of. If a book can 'stop me in my tracks,' it is one I will read, keep, and value. * Jazz Lives *This is, on the surface, a book-sized discography, a listing of all known recordings of the great baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams. But the academic-sounding discography category does not adequately describe the exhaustive work that author Gary Carner has done to tell the story of Adams' life in what amount to a gig-by-gig, session-by-session biography. * Saxophone Today *The work Carner has put into this is just unmeasureable, truly staggering, and does justice to a neglected giant, a musician respected by his peers, for his harmonic prowess, his energy with the larger saxophone, his enthusiasm for music, his imagination... like drummer Bill Goodwin describes him: "someone who played as if there was no tomorrow; at all times!" * JazzontheRecord *Good discographies are certainly very useful tools, but it is highly uncommon for a discography, even an annotated one, to also qualify as a good read. But Pepper Adams' Joy Road most definitely is. It brings the man as well as his music to life. Read—and listen—well! * Jazz Profiles *Table of ContentsForeword by Dan Morgenstern Acknowledgments How to Use This Book Preface Chapter 1. The Early Years: 1947-1958 Chapter 2. That legacy of great trumpet performance and recording is brought to readers in Thomas Hustad's Born to Play: The Ruby Braff Discography and Directory of Performances. Braff's uncompromising standards, musical taste, and creative imagination informed his consummate artistry in creating music beautifully played. He achieved swiftly what few musicians accomplish in a lifetime by developing a unique and immediately recognizable style. For a reminder of that we need but play any of the more than 150 released recordings on which he appears. These records span a total of 54 years, from 1949 to 2002, a feat almost unmatched in jazz recording. This was five years longer than even Louis Armstrong. Braff is known for his unique style and for having one of the longest recording histories in jazz history—from 1949-2002. In that span of 54 years Braff played on more than 105 released recordings. The book is first and foremost a discography of Braff's commercial and undocumented performances, with many of the entries providing extensive annotations. The book also serves as a biography to Braff's life as it provides details of the musician's life as a performer and includes personal memories from others in the field. The 22 chapters are names to indicate various periods of Braff's life and career; for example, "Ruby's Growing Jazz Stardom," "Tony Bennett and the New York Club," and "Ruby's Final Tour: Honoring His Audience until the End." The work concludes with an appendix of album notes, and musician and song indexes. This volume is a valuable addition to this series and will be a worthwhile purchase for academic and large public libraries. * American Reference Books Annual *A fascinating document, invaluable not only for those who regarded Ruby as one of the marvels of jazz — it is also a chronicle of one man’s fierce determination to create beauty in a world that sometimes seemed oblivious to it. Many large-scale works of scholarship are thorough but cold, and the reader feels the chill. Others have adulation intrude on the purpose of the work. Tom Hustad’s book is an ideal mixture of scholarship, diligence, and warm affection: its qualities in an admirable balance. I think the only way this book could have been improved would have been for Ruby to continue on past 2002 and the book to follow him. * Jazz Lives *Hustad’s dedication to documenting the life and music of Ruby Braff has earned him a special place in the writing of jazz history. Yes, he gives us the facts, lots of them, but it is the picture that we find in Hustad’s commentary of this complex and uniquely talented man of principle whom he could truly call a friend that makes this volume special. Anyone with a taste for good music cannot help but be affected by the musical genius of Ruby Braff, and Hustad has gone a long way to making us understand that this was a man who had a lot of natural talent, but it was the inner forces that drove him to the top of his field. * Jersey Jazz *Born to Play is another noteworthy volume in the highly acclaimed Studies In Jazz series…Quite simply that means that this book meets all criteria as an authoritative jazz discography and reference work for all time. Personally I can say that since I have purchased this book I have spent many enjoyable hours checking my record shelves and searching for missing items on the internet. Recommendation-wise this one deserves 5 stars all around! * The IAJRC Journal *As far as I know Tom Hustad’s book is unique in jazz literature. There have been famous and worthy attempts at day-by-day books on Goodman, Henderson and Ellington, but thanks to modern technology and Hustad’s assiduous pursuit of his subject, none to rival this one. Because everything about Ruby was so vivid, the book, read in conjunction with listening to his music, brings Ruby back to life in an almost supernatural way. * Jazz Journal *Thomas P. Hustad’s exhaustive book attempts to document not only every known record date, but also every broadcast, private recording, performance and interview, a seemingly impossible task. The author also collected and reviewed many of the unissued performances. Hustad’s research includes interview transcriptions, excerpts of previously published reviews and articles, along with period advertisements for bookings, all meticulously footnoted. The result is a comprehensive, critical look at Braff’s career....Hustad’s book is not a fast read, but one that serious Ruby Braff fans will savor as they learn new facets of his career and seek out additional LPs, CDs and broadcasts featuring him that circulate among collectors. * The New York City Jazz Record *Hustad’s book is much more than a compilation of recording session information and performance dates and locations, for interspersed with that data are biographical information, excerpts from reviews, and commentary by the author. For the Braff admirer — count me among them! — the volume serves not only as an essential reference but as a treasure house that provides immense pleasure and rewards in simply browsing in it. -- W. Royal StokesA glorious labor of love, this massive volume makes a substantial contribution to documenting the musical life of one too long absent from the history books. The work’s inclusive scope and the thorough research that went into its making are exemplary and deserve to be emulated by others involved in similar projects. It is hoped that the existence of this resource will inspire more to investigate Braff’s life and music. * ARSC Journal *[Born to Play] is truly much more than a mere discography. It contains not only the dates and titles of all of Braff’s recordings, but lists all of the performances that the author found documented and includes passages from articles and reviews, too. Thus between prosaic lists of ensemble members and repertories emerges a portrait of a musician on the go, an extraordinarily active musician who not only performed with the great names in swing, but who also enjoyed competing with musicians from other genres. * Jazzinstitut Darmstadt *[I]f you are a fan of Braff or even the mainstream genre...you really should pick up this work. It will give you many evenings of relaxed reading...The author, Tom Hustad, seems to have had the cooperation of Mr. Braff, certainly a feat in itself. In addition the author seems to have referenced and quoted from many interviews and press items of Braff. There are some wonderful stories here...This is just a wonderful bio-discography...It’s outstanding! * Cadence Magazine *

Duke University Press Vinyl Freak
Book SynopsisMusic writer, curator, and collector John Corbett burrows deep inside the record collector's mind, documenting and reflecting on his decades-long love affair with vinyl. Discussing more than 200 rare and out-of-print LPs, Corbett combines memoir and criticism to explain what makes vinyl special and what drives collectors everywhere.Trade Review"Vinyl Freak could have easily been a stale trip down memory lane by a record collector. Yet Corbett takes an almost philosophical look at how music passes through listening mediums and what that means for listeners. As a result, the text will appeal to both vinyl freaks and non-freaks as it speaks to the transience of pop culture and its intersection with everyday lives." -- Amanda McCorquodale * Foreword Reviews *"... since the discussion is at least as much about the music being collected as the vinyl package, there is also a lot of intriguing music in the book. Much (but not all) of it jazz, and all of it worth seeking out: it comes with Corbett's highest recommendation." -- Mark Sullivan * All About Jazz *"[A] fascinating look at a subculture og hard-core collectors and a gold mine of information about various kinds of music and recording esoterica.... The illustrations of the record covers under review are fascinating and the author's musical savvy is daunting. This lively book could appeal to a wide range of readers." -- David Keymer * Library Journal *"... one of the most readable books about the arcane magic of hunting down and listening to rare and unusual albums, or even rediscovering them from your own collection." -- Jon Newey * Jazzwise *"As a person who is not quite an over-the-top Sun Ra aficionado but is certainly more than a casual fan, I am forever grateful for Corbett’s obsession. As a person who is always interested in discovering new and obscure music, I am also forever grateful for Corbett and his publisher compiling this collection of reviews. Although I read several of them in their original incarnation in Downbeat, this little book is now my reference guide for music I need to check out. Thanks again, John Corbett." -- Ron Jacobs * Counterpunch *"[Corbett's] new book digs deep into the culture of the vinyl lover and digs even deeper into his personal record collection. In the process, he exposes a beautiful and dusty world largely forgotten but kept alive by that dead medium known as the vinyl record." -- Christopher Laird * PopMatters *"Corbett really is an 'equal opportunity ear filler' and is willing to acquire the music he really enjoys in any format. With Vinyl Freak John Corbett invites us to join him in the pleasure of discovering new sounds to indulge our ears. So what are you waiting for? You’ve been invited. Highly Recommended!" -- Chris De Chiara * Avant Music News *"Corbett still has an obscene record collection, but he's realized that his greatest mission is to share and educate—to arrange things so that others can experience the joy that he does. As much as anything I've read by him, Vinyl Freak does precisely that." -- Peter Margasak * Chicago Reader *"John Corbett is one of my favourite music writers. This book gathers up his elegaic and highly informative columns for Vinyl Freak magazine along with a series of mediations or essays on his love of music, an engaging mix of autobiography, reflection and storytelling. There are lots of colour pictures of record sleeves too." -- Rupert Loydell * International Times *"Corbett's deep knowledge in his chosen fields yields many valuable insights about records you may never have even heard of, let alone heard. Sure, he appreciates the classics, but he favours outliers. Admirably, he wants to broaden the canon (it would behoove readers to keep a notebook handy to tabulate all the records for which they should search).... And that is the motor of Vinyl Freak: an insatiable desire for the next revelatory recording, offering a thrilling portal to discover a hidden facet of your identity through a work of art. And if it impresses your mates or seduces a potential lover, so much the better." -- Dave Segal * The Wire *"John Corbett revels in the knowledge he's gained from a life spent rooting round shops and chats with like-minded souls. It's the final section that will resonate with most, detailing his experience unearthing an entire house-worth of Sun Ra memorabilia, it is so vividly written that you can almost sense his pulse racing as he ecstatically rifles through priceless artefacts." * Record Collector *"Corbett writes with both enthusiasm and a keen ear, the upshot of which is that high-dollar rarities and cheapies that shred get near-equal attention." -- Clifford Allen * New York City Jazz Record *"John Corbett shows how vinyl collecting serves archival and perhaps even societal purposes. By actively reanimating obscure and hard to find vinyl, he demonstrates that 'vinyl freaks' make worlds available that otherwise might be lost. Vinyl Freak opens up a world of vinyl, revealing recordings, musicians, as well as cultural history, that remain written in the grooves of decades-old records." -- Janet Borgerson & Jonathan Schroeder * Popular Music and Society *“Vinyl Freak is a good read, a well-written collection that helps with the fun and overwhelming project of trying to come to grips with the huge amount of music preserved in the LP era. I cannot imagine even casual collectors making it through Vinyl Freak without adding several items to their wants lists.” -- Carlos Peña * ARSC Journal *"The spirit of this book, it’s generosity and enthusiasm all work to support John’s preferred status as a 'Freak' not a 'Snob.' I love records. I love books. A beautiful book about crazy rare and out-of-print records?!
