Book SynopsisFully updated fifth edition of the classic introduction to social and cultural anthropologyTrade Review'A masterful introduction to the wide range of subjects studied by anthropologists as well as to the distinctive perspectives they bring to bear on these matters.' -- Vered Amit, Professor Emerita of Anthropology, Concordia University'In almost three decades since it was first published, this book has evolved with its subject, magnificently corroborating its author’s thesis, that the best anthropology addresses timeless themes of the human condition through a relentless focus on the contemporary. In a novelty-obsessed age, Eriksen’s encyclopaedic tour of comparative anthropology teaches us to build on classical foundations. This is not just another book in the library of anthropology; it is an entire anthropological library in one book.' -- Tim Ingold, Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology, University of Aberdeen'Remains among the most brilliant summaries of key ideas animating anthropology. In his famously accessible writing style, Eriksen introduces fundamental questions that shape human life, and provides an overview of the discipline’s contribution to the pressing issues of our times. The new version will not only appeal to beginners, but is also a must-read for established professionals.' -- Ursula Rao, Director, Anthropology of Politics and Governance, Max-Planck-Institute for Social Anthropology'Draws students into exploring our human diversity in all its intriguing manifestations, offering a wonderful way to grasp the excitement of anthropology and its focus on what it means to be human.' -- Rob Borofsky, Center for a Public Anthropology'Authoritative, challenging, accessible, up-to-date, this is a splendid introduction to modern social anthropology. I would press it on anyone who wants a better grasp of the diversity of human ways of living. And it is a must-read for students.' -- Adam Kuper, Centennial Professor of Anthropology, London School of Economics'This classic volume is quite simply the best introduction there is to social and cultural anthropology. Deeply grounded in the history of anthropological thought, it is also thoroughly up to date. More than that, it is unfailingly engaging, clear and accurate. There is no better place to go to begin to learn why anthropology has been and remains a vital discipline in the contemporary world.' -- Joel Robbins, Sigrid Rausing Professor of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge'Small Places, Large Issues shows us Thomas Hylland Eriksen in his admirable triple capacity as an anthropologist: the scholar, with depth and breadth of knowledge, and with a critical sense; the statesman, negotiating with fairness between anthropological camps; and the journalist, with a sense of what is new, zooming between close-up and Big Picture, and writing clearly about it all.' -- Ulf Hannerz'This wonderfully lucid introduction to social and cultural anthropology readily captures students' attention. By delineating the past and present development of the discipline, Eriksen underscores continuities and challenges that inform the practice of anthropology in today's world. In presenting anthropology as a means for elucidating large issues through the analysis of small places, the book speaks eloquently to anthropology's intellectual vibrance and practical value.' -- Noel Dyck, Professor of Social Anthropology, Simon Fraser UniversityTable of ContentsSeries Preface Preface to the fifth edition 1. Richly sensual yet never flowery, Barks' language emphasizes Rumi's embodied spirituality in a book to savor." -- Booklist (starred review) "An emeritus English professor at the University of Georgia, Barks has spent 34 years working on Rumi's poetry - you could even say that Rumi has been the secret companion musician Barks has danced to." -- Los Angeles Times "Barks has become internationally renowned for his translations... Book SynopsisRoger Scruton explores the place of God in a disenchanted world. His argument is a response to the atheist culture that is now growing around us, and also a defence of human uniqueness. He rebuts the claim that there is no meaning or purpose in the natural world, and argues that the sacred and the transcendental are ''real presences'', through which human beings come to know themselves and to find both their freedom and their redemption. In the human face we find a paradigm of meaning. And from this experience, Scruton argues, we both construct the face of the world, and address the face of God. We find in the face both the proof of our freedom and the mark of self-consciousness. One of the motivations of the atheist culture is to escape from the eye of judgement. You escape from the eye of judgement by blotting out the face: and this, Scruton argues, is the most disturbing aspect of the times in which we live. In his wide-ranging argument Scruton explains the growing sense oTrade ReviewRoger Scruton is one of our most interesting intellectuals... This is an important book, with a very wide cultural range. • The Food and Feasts of Jesus

Rowman & Littlefield The Food and Feasts of Jesus

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe New Testament is filled with stories of Jesus eating with peoplefrom extravagant wedding banquets to simple meals of loaves and fishes. The Food and Feasts of Jesus offers a new perspective on life in biblical times by taking readers inside these meals. Food production and distribution impacted all aspects of ancient life, including the teachings of Jesus. From elaborate holiday feasts to a simple farmer's lunch, the book explores the significance of various meals, discusses key ingredients, places food within the socioeconomic conditions of the time, and offers accessible recipes for readers to make their own tastes of the first century. Ideal for individual reading or group study, this book opens a window into the tumultuous world of the first century and invites readers to smell, touch, and taste the era's food.Trade ReviewEveryone knows that Jesus fed thousands with just a few fish and loaves, but what did people of the first century eat on an everyday basis? According to Neel and Pugh, the ancient Middle Eastern diet has much in common with the region’s contemporary foods despite 2,000 years of changing tastes and technological innovations. Jewish dietary proscriptions may have limited consumption of some foods, but the presence in Jerusalem of Roman occupation forces and other gentiles would have meant some diversity at table. The authors inventory available grains, fruits, vegetables, meats, and fish. Holidays of the era, most tied to the cycle of planting and harvesting, had their own specific traditions for feasts. For those who want to recreate a seder, the authors offer a sample Passover meal and its ritual prayers in both Hebrew and English. Recipes enable anyone to recreate entire meals that Jesus might well have enjoyed. * Booklist *Neel, an Episcopal priest, and Pugh, a CPA, are both serious experts on ancient foodways. This enjoyable and tasty book is an insightful culinary study of Jesus’s time and the role played by the preparation of food and its consumption. Their book allows the reader to 'study, taste, and experience the culture of the first century Holy Land.' The 50-plus recipes included permit the reader to incorporate these delicious and healthy foods into their own meals and celebrations. The authors see food as a gift from God and believe that in its preparation and consumption we create community. The authors not only present the recipes but also explore the significance of food in biblical times from everyday repasts to the specific meanings of food choices at rituals such as wedding feasts, religious gatherings, and Shabbat. The recipes feature the fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish, olive oil, and fresh spices that were used at the time and will enable readers to experience this important aspect of biblical studies. VERDICT This book is ideal for anyone looking for different and inspiring recipes as well as an excellent introduction to life in the first-century Holy Land. Highly recommended. * Library Journal *There’s no doubt that food plays a big part in the most important moments of our lives. But have you ever wondered how the meals you share with family and friends today would compare to the food commonly found on the tables where Jesus once dined? In The Food and Feasts of Jesus, Douglas Neel and Joel Pugh open a delicious doorway into first-century kitchens, examining the basic ingredients of the day and serving up mouthwatering recipes for dishes commonly served at both special celebrations and ordinary meals. The authors reveal how preparing and sharing a feast became a key ingredient in defining culture and developing community—and how a return to cooking traditions of the past can bring us closer together in the present. * U.S. Catholic *Most of the recipes in this book are simple enough for the home cook, and are likely to appeal even to eaters who are only slightly adventurous.... The authors’ invitation to ‘join the feast’ is a nuanced and thoughtful one, aimed at separating the reader from ‘our fast-food culture’ and rediscovering the pleasure of creating entire delicious meals from scratch, inviting others to share, remembering those who do not have enough, and, in every bite, relishing the goodness and generosity of God, without whose sustaining hand there is no bread, no life. * Education & Culture *Mr. Neel and Mr. Pugh's book dissects the food of Jesus' time: what people ate on a day-to-day basis, what they ate for religious feasts such as Passover, how social and economic conditions influenced diet, and why any of this still matters. And, as the subtitle suggests, the authors have developed recipes so you could theoretically serve a first-century meal at home, perhaps even on the floor as it might have been served then, with the multigenerational family sitting on cushions around the food. * Pittsburgh Post-Gazette *It is clear from the tone and tempo of this book that Doug and co-author Joel Pugh greatly enjoyed themselves as they researched and wrote it. You should be prepared for the same fun experience as you read. Fair warning: Expect to get thirsty and hungry as you learn about all the food and feasts and peruse the multiple recipes at the end of most of the chapters. The author tell us that this is not a book for scholars. Rather, it is written for ordinary people who want to study, taste and experience the culture of the 1st Century Holy Land....This is much more than a cookbook. It is a reflection of 1st Century Mediterranean life written in an inviting, storytelling style. * Pagosa Sun (Pagosa Springs, CO) *About twelve years ago, the Rev. Doug Neel – an avowed foodie and flyfisherman – was leading a Bible study in his parish in Texas about Luke’s Gospel, when he noticed that in nearly every chapter, Jesus is at a banquet of some sort. This observation, and questions it raised for Neel about what such a banquet might have been like, prompted him to begin an in-depth exploration of the food and culture in the time of Jesus that led to a catering business, another way of teaching the New Testament, and ultimately to a book – co-authored with Joel Pugh – called The Food and Feasts of Jesus....Neel did extensive research for the book, whose chapters are structured around stories from the Bible, the cultural context for those stories, and recipes that high-light either part of the story or an event in the story. He and co-author Pugh consulted a number of sources, including Greek and Roman writings, and a first-century Roman cookbook. They also looked at archaeological findings about what kinds of pots and pans have been found from the first century, and at agricultural records of what kinds of crops were grown, both for internal consumption and for export....Neel’s parish families have played a significant role in the book’s evolution, from his ministry in Dallas prompting the idea for the book in the first place, to the women’s group at St. Patrick’s that helped him test the recipes he was developing and finalizing for the book. He hopes other congregations will use the book to encourage discussion, study and sharing food and conversation. Each chapter stands alone, so groups could take on just one chapter or meal, or they could work through the book, one teaching at a time. The book itself contains recommendations for how congregations and small groups might use it. Neel encourages people to engage the full experience of eating like Jesus and his peers did. 'They ate with their hands,' he says. 'I encourage people to try eating with their hands too – it is a very different experience.' * Colorado Episcopalian *Go back to basics with The Food and Feasts of Jesus. Authors Neel and Pugh give readers an insight into 'the world of first-century fare with menus and recipes.' In addition to understanding life and culture in Biblical times, readers can experience for themselves what Jesus and his disciples ate for their meals. Try out recipes for ordinary meals shared by everyone living in the Holy Land as well as lavish fare eaten during Passover, Thanksgiving, banquets and weddings. * MSN Lifestyle (XIN) *This unusual book is written not for scholars and historians, but for ordinary readers who want to know: W(hat) W(ould) J(esus) E(at)?...Neel and Pugh highlight the ways in which shared meals foster community, define identity, teach history, and reinforce cultural norms. They also place food within the dire socioeconomic conditions of the time, noting vast disparities between the diets of the rich and the poor and the disruption of the Jewish farm and food production occasioned by oppressive policies of Herod the Great. The book prompts readers to reflect on their own culinary habits, e.g., meat-heavy diets and the profound disconnect we moderns have with the growth and production of our own food—an enterprise in which 80 to 90% of the population was engaged in Jesus’ day. Readers will also take from the book a renewed appreciation of the ways in which '[f]ood, feasting, food production, culture, and history are all intricately intertwined.' * Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology *Understanding food in first-century Palestine helps readers better understand the context of Jesus' teaching, the authors write. They include simple, modernized recipes so that a home cook can prepare a daily meal, a light outdoor lunch or one of several special feasts. * The Christian Chronicle *The Food and Feasts of Jesus: The Original Mediterranean Diet, with Menus and Recipes addresses just what the title promises, inviting the reader not only to come to a greater and more intimate understanding of the society of Jesus’ time, but to actually try it out in a 21st century kitchen. * Orange County Catholic *One does not need to be a cook to relish this book. It is as intriguing as it is informative. I hope you will savor it. Goodness only knows, I certainly have. -- Phyllis Tickle, author of The Great EmergenceW(hat)W(ould)J(esus)E(at)? That's the question both posed and answered in this engaging book. Douglas E. Neel and Joel A. Pugh have combined serviceable knowledge of the Bible, a keen grasp of ancient Mediterranean culture and the culinary arts to fine effect. No wonder 'the Son of Man came eating and drinking.' No wonder the psalmist advised 'O taste and see.' -- Rev. Harry T. Cook, Episcopal priest, author of Long Live Salvation by WorksAn excellent book for ordinary people who wish to experience and study the first century meals of Jesus. The recipes are classic for the ancient Mediterranean and the meals of the daily life in ancient Palestine. A feast for Christians and non Christians alike! -- Kathleen E. Corley, University of Wisconsin-OshkoshThis book is a feast of information and thoughtful perspectives on the foods, meals, customs, and teachings about food at the time of Jesus. From religious festivals to weddings to Shabbat to everyday meals, the authors cover it all. They bring to life the eating experiences of rich and poor, men and women, in good times and bad, on feast days and on workdays. Many familiar biblical passages will be illuminated by this book, but the unexpected delight is the full description of foods available in Jesus’ day, and recipes for complete meals so that people today can experience the foods and meals of the Bible. -- Lawrence Wills, Episcopal Divinity SchoolHappy are those who taste the feast of the kingdom of God Douglas Neel and Joel Pugh have prepared for them in The Food and Feasts of Jesus! This book offers a satisfying combination of history, stories, and recipes in a practical way to enhance modern Christian table fellowship. I particularly appreciated the friendly and respectful way the authors preserved the Jewish flavor of Jesus' meals. -- Jonathan Brumberg-Kraus, Wheaton CollegeTable of ContentsChapter 1: Why Eat the Food of Jesus and his Followers Chapter 2: The Bounty of the First Century Kitchen Chapter 3: Our Daily Bread Chapter 4: The Farmer, Food, and Social Responsibility Chapter 5: The Sabbath Feast Chapter 6: The Banquet Chapter 7: The Wedding Feast Chapter 8: The Feast of the Passover Supplement to Chapter 8: A First Century Passover Haggadah Chapter 9: The Harvest Feast Chapter 10: Eating with God; The Todah Feast Chapter 11: Picnic at the Beach Chapter 12: What We Have Learned and Why We Join the Feast

  • Charming Beauties and Frightful Beasts: Non-Human Animals in South Asian Myth, Ritual and Folklore

Equinox Publishing Ltd Charming Beauties and Frightful Beasts: Non-Human Animals in South Asian Myth, Ritual and Folklore

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDiscussions on non-human animals, other-than-human persons and religion originally emerged within the context of Christian theology, eco-theology and Western-based environmentalism. In response to that, and by adhering to post-modern discourses on, for instance, indigeneity, mimicry and hybridity, the volume explores South Asian cultural manifestations and aspects of localised knowledge in relation to the construction and the Otherisation of the concept of body and behaviour in non-human animals. The study of non-human animals as other-than-human persons (actual animals, but also animal-spirits, animal deities, etc.) has marked a significant shift in the ethics/politics of the academic study of religion. The chapters in this book investigate how South Asian religions, with their sacred narratives, ritualised practices and popular performances, bear witness to the active presence of non-human animals as both culture makers/bearers and symbols of spirituality. Further to that, with bourgeoning debates on religion, indigeneity, eco-theology and environmentalism, the volume urges for a consolidation and promotion of an analysis of the twofold epistemic violence exerted towards animals as subaltern to human animals and to animals in Western and Christian traditions. The book is divided into fifteen chapters, each dealing with non-human animals and the concept of animality in different South Asian traditions, or various aspects of the same tradition. The structure of the book reflects that of what is probably the most popular collection of folk tales on animals in South Asia, the Pancatantra. Like the original text, the volume is divided into five books (tantras) whose single stories (our chapters) act as sub-strings inscribed in larger narrative frames. As in the original Pancatantra, the principal themes of each book are signalled by key words which provide the link between successive narrative cycles. Such a structural arrangement creates the backbone for the main body of the book allowing for an articulate, clear and reasoned discussion of single themes, such as 1) non-human animals as divine portents in situations of imbalance; 2) non-human animals as restorers of order and symbols of cultural identity; 3) non-human animals as exemplary beings and spiritual teachers in sacred narratives; 4) non-human animals as symbols of love and object of human reverence; 5) non-human animals as portents symbolising the life cycle, including its inevitable end. In the conclusion, the editors summarise what has been achieved with this academic 'narrative' and reflect constructively on its outcomes as well as future developments with respect to past and present scholarship.Table of ContentsThe Animal Question in South Asia: A Post-Modern Pancatantra Thomas Dahnhardt and Fabrizio M. This is a must read." — Propaganda, author of Terraform Yahoo! — "This stunning debut is as tender as you imagine it to be in addition to adding an extra dose of ecstatic joy to remind you how real-life becoming feels. The Unfolding is like a healing roadmap, nourishment for those who are thirsty for hope, growth and awakening.” — Minaa B., LMSW “Arielle tenderly offers us a richness of grace only seen from the mystics of the old. Her eloquence of story and depth of wisdom lovingly unfolds us into her process, awakening liberation in each of us.” — William Matthews, music director at New Abbey "The Unfolding is a beautiful invitation to come back to yourself, trust your inner wisdom, and just take a breath." — Jamie Varon, author of Radically Content

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis collection of leading scholars presents reflections on both wisdom as a general concept throughout history and cultures, as well as the contested nature of the category of Wisdom Literature. The first half of the collection explores wisdom more generally with essays on its relationship to skill, epistemology, virtue, theology, and order. Wisdom is examined in a number of different contexts, such as historically in the Hebrew Bible and its related cultures, in Egypt and Mesopotamia, as well as in Patristic and Rabbinic interpretation. Additionally, wisdom is examined in its continuing relevance in Islamic, Jewish, and Christian thought, as well as from feminist, environmental, and other contextual perspectives. The second half of the volume considers Wisdom Literature as a category. Scholars address its relation to the Solomonic Collection, its social setting, literary genres, chronological development, and theology. Wisdom Literature''s relation to other biblical literature (law, history, prophecy, apocalyptic, and the broad question of Wisdom influence) is then discussed before separate chapters on the texts commonly associated with the category. Contributors take a variety of approaches to the current debates surrounding the viability and value of Wisdom Literature as a category and its proper relationship to the concept of wisdom in the Hebrew Bible. Though the organization of the volume highlights the independence of wisdom as concept from Wisdom Literature as a category, seeking to counter the lack of attention given to this question in the traditional approach, the inclusion of both topics together in the same volume reflects their continued interconnection. As such, this handbook both represents the current state of Wisdom scholarship and sets the stage for future developments.Trade ReviewThis volume of the Oxford Handbook series serves as an excellent entry into current conversations and debates surrounding wisdom and the wisdom tradition in the Hebrew Bible. Contributors come from a variety of vantage points, ranging from those who defend the traditional designation of wisdom as a genre to those who view this as an artificial designation imposed on disparate texts by modern scholarship. But the chapters are of consistently high quality while also still being highly readable. Scholars will come away from these chapters with much to debate, and students will gain a solid understanding of both the history and the current state of wisdom scholarship. * Brandon R. Grafius, Review of Biblical Literature *The Handbook contains a cornucopia of delights to readers, with such rich contentions as 'Proverbs invites its readers and learners to frolic in the pursuit of wisdom'. * John Jarick, Journal for the Study of the Old Testament *The Handbook contains a cornucopia of delights to readers, with such rich contentions as 'Proverbs invites its readers and learners to frolic in the pursuit of wisdom'. * John Jarick, Journal for the Study of the Old Testament *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewKatsikas's impressive archival research sheds light on a neglected topic...In this original study, the author demonstrates how conversion to Christianity in the age of nationalism was a survival tactic and a means to acquire the attendant privileges of being a member of the victorious side in post-Ottoman Europe. * Marc David Baer, author of The Ottomans: Khans, Caesars, and Caliphs *This book represents considerable scholarship on the important question of conversion from Islam to Orthodox Christianity during and in the aftermath of the very violent period associated with the War of Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire. Drawing on a wealth of archival and other primary sources, Katsikas presents a clear and engaging analysis of the conditions under which Muslims became Orthodox Christians in this period of dramatic political and demographic change. * Benjamin Fortna, Director & Professor, School of Middle Eastern & North African Studies, University of Arizona *Lost in the literature of nationalisms and 'ethnic awakenings', the fate of those individuals and communities converting to a new nation (and religion) has received little attention so far. Stephanos Katsikas successfully unpacks this aspect of modern Greek history and the fate of its first Muslim citizens providing an impressive array of legal, political and historical data to inform one of the most problematic aspects of nation-building in Europe * Neophytos Loizides, Director of Conflict Analysis Research Centre, University of Kent *This book is, without any doubt, a major contribution to the field of Balkan history and broadly, to modern European history. It is based on an unexplored cache of unique source material that is meticulously analyzed and convincingly laid out. * Maria Todorova, Gutgsell Professor of History, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign *Katsikas' work lays an important foundation in the English language scholarship of post-independence Greece. * Alexander Billinis, The Hydramerican *

Book SynopsisExplores three interrelated questions: does the Hebrew bible, or subsequent Jewish tradition, teach environmental responsibility or not?; what Jewish teachings appropriately address the environmental crisis?; and do ecology, Judaism, and philosophy work together in confronting the crisis?Trade ReviewFor decades Judaic environmental ethics has stood in the shadow of unfruitful debates about Christian responsibility for the environmental crisis. This collection puts those debates into perspective and begins the discussion of Jewish environmental philosophy in its own right, by bringing together materials that would otherwise be difficult to obtain, if not unavailable, to most readers of the book. It provides the best starting point for anyone, researchers and laypersons alike, interested in learning more about this important subfield within environmental philosophy. -- Eugene Hargrove, University of North TexasThis important book invites the reader to delve more deeply into the ethical and philosophical questions that underlie our environmental dilemma. It provides a lucid analysis of Jewish texts that speak to environmental concerns, and inspires the reader—regardless of religious orientation—to think critically about environmental issues. -- Ellen Bernstein, Founder, Shomrei Adamah, Keepers of the Earth, and Editor, Ecology & the Jewish SpiritUnlike most collections about Judaism and the environment, this one takes the former at least as seriously as the latter. Martin Yaffe's extended and deeply thoughtful introduction provides a perfect setting for the stimulating readings that follow; he steadfastly refuses to be content with merely donning the latest green lenses to view five thousand years of tradition. Instead, he identifies the deep questions that turn his carefully chosen selections into a lively debate about God, nature, and human responsibility. -- Charles Rubin, Duquesne UniversityYaffe skillfully and intelligently guides readers through the complex thicket of issues raised by the articles on Judaism and environmentalism. . . . He makes subtle suggestions about how to think more clearly and less ideologically about some of the most contentious problems that animate the various authors and stir the contemporary discussion. -- Kenneth Hart Green, University of TorontoThis book brings together works of the highest intellectual quality and philosophical merit addressing the problematic relationship of Judaism and the contemporary environmental crisis. The alleged alienation of Jews from nature is honestly confronted and just as honestly contested. The potential of biblical and other Judaic resources for developing a powerful environmental ethic is fully and satisfyingly explored. Book SynopsisTheophilus of Antioch was a second-century Syrian bishop who sought to promote in three books, collectively known as Ad Autolycum, a moralistic form of Christianity. Given that this form of Christianity is generally considered by scholars as atypical within the early church, Theophilus has not received the same amount of attention as have other second-century theologians. Rick Rogers seeks to redress this gap, offering a fuller analysis of the rhetoric and focus of Theophilus''s theological system as it is manifest in Ad Autolycum. Rogers concludes that Theophilus''s thought may have been closer to the emphasis of Hellenistic Judaism than was any other form of New Testament or early Christianity. This book is a significant contribution to American Catholic Studies. -- Christopher J. Kauffman, Catholic University of AmericaIt will be welcomed by students of American Catholic studies and especially by those whose assessment of the contemporary church correspond's with the author's. * The Catholic Historical Review, October 2009 *I recommend this book highly. It is well written, sensitive to practical pastoral practices and how they influence and condition thought (a la Charles Pierce), aware of the early nineteenth century republican understanding of the common good (over private interest or individualism), and familiar with the earlier historiography on John England, with which McNeil interacts throughout the text. . . . It would be useful and provacative for advanced undergraduates, graduate students in history as well as theology, and theologians and historians. It should certainly be in every college library. * American Catholic Studies, Fall 2009 *This is a work of creative scholarship that brings historical resources to a crucial debate about American Catholicism. It deserves the attention of theologians and other scholars interested in American history and religion. * Theological Studies, December 2009 *Recovering American Catholic Inculturation paints a compelling portrait of John England as a creative nineteenth-century pastoral leader who can serve as a model for today's church. -- William J. Book SynopsisSaint Leander played a major part, against all odds, in spreading the true faith throughout Spain for the first time. This translation of Leander's rules for a nun's life provides an important addition to such literature.Trade ReviewIn this welcome book, John Martyn does a great service to Early-Medievalists by rescuing Isidore of Seville's fascinating elder brother from the mists of obscurity. By highlighting the extraordinary lives of Leander and his saintly siblings, Martyn reminds us how much remains to be explored about this most exciting period in history. Martyn's intimate knowledge of the writings of Leander's contemporaries and of Classical Latin in general skilfully illuminate the nuances of Leander's writings. -- Pamela O'Neill, University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, Australian Early Medieval AssociationThis volume provides a key, unusually early text about the way of life for religious women in the late antique and medieval periods. Martyn's translation is both elegant and accurate. -- Constant J.
