What you see determines what you believe - and the most powerful way of inspiring people is with images. My goal with AndBloom is to motivate women to embrace life without fear. To provide examples of women between the age of 40 and, currently, 100, so that any woman can open this book and see themselves recognized.' Denise Boomkens launched the AndBloom project on Instagram in 2018, to create a 'happy place for women over 40' - a community where women can be themselves and where aging is celebrated instead of feared. University of California Press Blood Magic
Book SynopsisExamining cultures as diverse as long-house dwellers in North Borneo, African farmers, Welsh housewives, and postindustrial American workers, this title redefines the anthropological study of menstrual customs.Trade Review"The first book on the anthropology of menstruation to be published by a major university press." -- Becky Vorpagel Journal of American Folklore "A major innovation is the deliberate and consistent focus on women's views and their participation in social responses to bodily processes." -- Terence Hays Journal of the History of Sexuality "Reclaiming the female body, retrieving it piece by piece from the grip of patriarchal culture and medical practice, has been a central feminist goal for each of the last two decades. Menstruation ... is now front and center on the feminist agenda as a topic that needs to be rethought ... Blood Magic ... [is] among a larger set of books that are seeking simultaneously to dismantle the traditional formulations and to replace them with a woman-centered set of understandings ... [the book]... not only clear[s] and point[s] the way for a new woman-centered scholarship on menstruation but demonstrate[s] its significance to the feminist agenda." -- Anna Meigs Signs "The first major collection on anthropological interpretations of menstruation... The editors contribute a lengthy, useful introduction to this biological phenomenon and the interpretations given to it by different peoples; moreover, they provide discussions for each section ... A well-edited and useful contribution to the continually growing literature on the cultural constructions of gender." -- L. Beck Choice, "Outstanding Title!" "Menstrual taboos have long been a favorite subject of ethnographic inquiry, but in the past their study has suffered from both an ethnocentric and male-centered bias. Burdened by their own set of 'menstrual taboos,' ethnographers have too often assumed they knew what those of another culture meant. Blood Magic, a collection of essays by nine fieldworkers in anthropology and related disciplines, marks a welcome departure from earlier studies in a number of ways. It derives its perspective from women's studies in recognizing the need to focus on women's experiences as well as those of men, and in recognizing the importance of female fieldworkers to do this. This is the first book-length collection of essays to grow out of recent cultural anthropological research on menstruation. Never before has the study of menstruation been so well informed by a combination of fieldwork and theoretical approaches to the study of gender and the symbolism of the body. Book Synopsis______________ 'Elegant, filthy – and quite possibly the queerest thing you will read all year.' - Guardian 'Intriguing and inventive.' - Electric Literature, "Most Anticipated LGBTQ+ Book of the Year" 'A dizzyingly enticing and kaleidoscopic take on the spectrum of sexual experiences.' - Publishers Weekly, starred review _____________ A daring, category-confounding, and ruthlessly funny novel from National Book Award honored author Edmund White that explores polyamory and bisexuality, ageing and love. Sicilian aristocrat and musician, Ruggero, and his younger American wife, Constance, agree to break their marital silence and write their Confessions. Until now they had a ban on speaking about the past, since transparency had wrecked their previous marriages. As the two alternate reading the memoirs they’ve written about their lives, Constance reveals her multiple marriages to older men, and Ruggero details the affairs he’s had with men and women across his lifetime—most importantly his passionate affair with the author Edmund White. Sweeping outward from the isolated Swiss ski chalet where the couple reads to travel through Europe and the United States, White’s new novel pushes for a broader understanding of sexual orientation and pairs humor and truth to create his most fascinating and complex characters to date. As in all of White’s earlier novels, this is a searing, scintillating take on physical beauty and its inevitable decline. But in this experimental new mode—one where the author has laid himself bare as a secondary character—White explores the themes of love and age through numerous eyes, hearts and minds. Delightful, irreverent, and experimental, A Previous Life proves once more why White is considered a master of American literature.Trade ReviewElegant, erudite, raunchy and fun, America’s great Man of Letters is working at the top of his form, giving us a pair of portraits hung against the pattern of history. Rutgers University Press Our Aging Bodies
Book SynopsisProvides a clear, scientifically based explanation of what happens to all the major organ systems and bodily processes - such as the cardiovascular and digestive systems - as people age. Throughout the book, Gary F. Merrill weaves in personal anecdotes and stories that help clarify and reinforce the facts and principles of the underlying scientific processes and explanations.Trade Review"Professor Merrill has written an important book on how various parts of the body change with aging. He has taught human systems physiology for some forty years and is very knowledgeable. An important 'take-home' message is that we can live a longer, healthier life if we treat our bodies carefully, and he tells us what we have to do. A point he makes is that many new medications advertised to treat various symptoms should be taken with caution. An expert on the inflammatory response, he discusses its negative impact on aging." -- David Denhardt * professor emeritus of Cell Biology and Neuroscience, Rutgers University *"Gary F. Merrill, a professor of cell biology and neuroscience at Rutgers University, presents abundantly fascinating scientific information about the human aging process. Written for a lay audience, this book describes in detail the adverse effects of unhealthy choices on human longevity. Our Aging Bodies explains how the human body develops, matures, ages, and declines and will benefit those interested in improving their health, well-being, and longevity." * Foreword Reviews *"A book that will pique the interest of those seeking to know about the human aging process … Highly recommended." * CHOICE *"Rutgers University cardiovascular physiologist Merrill authoritatively spells out how getting older changes the body’s major organs. This veteran of four decades of teaching sprinkles his informative guide with fascinating tidbits. A recurring theme: stay slim and don’t overeat, because restricting calories appears to extend longevity. Merrill [offers] a good, scientifically sound addition to the growing number of books on aging." * Booklist *"Professor Merrill has written an important book on how various parts of the body change with aging. Springer Publishing Company The Aging Individual
Book SynopsisContinuing in the tradition of the first edition, Whitbourne''s identity process model serves to integrate the physiological with a psychological perspective. The effects of physical changes on the individual are examined in terms of identity, as well as the impact of identity on the interpretation of these changes. The preventive and compensatory steps that indiviuduals can take to offset the aging process are explored as well. As with the first edition, a major strength of this text is the author''s illumination of complex biological concepts in a clear and accessible style. The Second Edition includes new material focusing on demographic statistics, chronic diseases, the biopsychosocial perspective, and succesful aging. This edition also features new charts, tables, and figures to highlight the text. This is an excellent text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of psychology, gerontology, and social work.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Physiological Effects of Ageing
Book SynopsisThe Physiological Effects of Ageing is a comprehensive resource for all nurses working with older people, enabling them to apply their knowledge of the ageing process to their practice, and, in doing so, enhance care delivery. This book emphasizes the normal ageing changes before considering possible effects of ageing on body systems, using as its framework Roper, Logan and Tierney's activities of living. Although problems associated with ageing are identified, nursing assessment and interventions are considered which can help reduce the impact these changes have on a person's functional ability. Special Features: Explores current theories of ageing Makes use of reflective points and points of practice Looks at key topics of maintaining a safe environment and communication Discusses error theory, free radical theory and the immune theory Ahighly accessible text which encourages holistic patient-centred care Trade Review"In order to provide quality and effective care, it is important that we are knowledgeable about the needs of this group and this book provides a good grounding in this area." (International Journal of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing, 1 November 2011) "The value of this book lies in the skilful way in which the authors have meshed normal and disordered physiology of ageing with Roper's models of living and nursing." Hodder & Stoughton True Age: Cutting Edge Research to Help Turn Back
Book SynopsisResearch suggests that only 10-30% of our lifespan is determined by our genetics. This means that the vast majority of how we age is directly related to choices we make everyday - how and what we eat, exercise and sleep quality, to name a few. And what if there were strategies to slow down, or even reverse, the ageing process? In True Age, Dr Morgan Levine gives us an insight into the cutting-edge developments in the science of aging and longevity and teaches us that through understanding our biological age, we can monitor and even control the process of ageing.True Age explores:- The concept of biological age and the methods now available to determine your own.- Types of foods likely to decrease our biological age - and which will age you prematurely.- What types of exercise are most effective for turning back the clock.- How much sleep we need and what other lifestyle patterns are most likely to help slow and reverse ageing.True Age will equip you with the tools you need to develop personal regimes, diets and routines specifically tailored to keep you looking - and feeling - as young as possible. Nova Science Publishers Inc Human Security: Social Support for the Health of
Book SynopsisAs an objective of human security, it is important to understand the social system and to make more appropriate policies for people based on the bio-psycho-social viewpoint of health advocated by the World Health Organization (WHO). For countries with increasingly large populations of older adults, aging-related disorders cause many social handicaps. A comprehensive approach for integrating not only medical, but also psychosocial and spiritual viewpoints is needed for better health policy planning.During a risky situation such as a major disaster, which can critically affect peoples lives, people should utilize their brains more fully in order to survive; i.e., to understand the situation around them, to make a proper judgment call, and to choose their behaviors. All of these approaches are associated with brain functions. Understanding the situation primarily requires the posterior part of the brain, especially the parietal lobe.Briefly, the occipital, temporal, parietal, and frontal lobes are related to visual, auditory, other sensory, and motor functions, respectively. Each lobe has primary and secondary areas: The former is associated with primary function, whereas the latter is related to association functions, which add meaning to the primary information. In particular, visual and auditory information should be fully integrated to understand the situation and make a judgment call, which is the function of the parietal lobe.Human Security: Social Support for the Health of an Aging Population Based on Geriatric Behavioral Neurology is meant to help readers understand the bio-psycho-social viewpoint and bioethics of social support for elderly people. The second aim is to understand the social support system and Quality of Life (QOL) for handicapped and elderly people. Especially, the long-term care insurance system for elderly people in Japan, which is a well-organized system to support well-being in the elderly, needs to be understood. Also, dementia is one of the important age-related disorders that can affect not only patients themselves, but also their families, community residents, and society. The third objective is to understand dementia and dementing diseases, not only from a medical perspective, but in terms of psychosocial and spiritual aspects. Following the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, various cases of weakness due to the disaster were analyzed. Most of them were previously assessed as a borderline condition between healthy and dementia. Therefore, it is important to routinely screen community residents for security. All risky situations such as a disaster should be treated internationally. The author recalls that one student told them that the Indonesian government faces difficulties in preparing for a disaster with a unified language. Indeed, more than 700 regional languages are spoken in Indonesias numerous islands. However, disasters do not select a language. The author is certain that there are some lessons from their history that have not been recorded in a common language. It is important to establish a network based not only on local culture and language, but also a global proposal based on a common language. The author hopes that young scientists in the next generation will have an integrated perspective and will apply science to human security worldwide.
