Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Cello
Book Synopsis''Strikingly original'' The Times''Absorbing'' Wall Street JournalJust as a cello's voice is divided across four strings, each with its own colour and character, this is a journey in four parts, in search of four players and their instruments...'In Cello, Kate Kennedy weaves together the lives of four remarkable cellists who suffered various forms of persecution, injury and misfortune. The Hungarian Jewish cellist and composer Pál Hermann managed to keep one step ahead of the Gestapo for much of the Second World War but was eventually captured and murdered. Lise Cristiani, the first female professional cello soloist, undertook an epic and ultimately fatal concert tour of Siberia in the 1850s, taking with her one of the world's greatest Stradivari cellos. Anita Lasker-Wallfisch was incarcerated in both Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen camps, only surviving because she was the cellist in the Auschwitz-Birkenau women's orchestra. Amedeo Baldovino of the Trieste Piano Trio was forced to jump from a burning ship with his Mara' Stradivari, losing the cello, and nearly losing his own life when the boat was shipwrecked off Buenos Aires.Counterpointing the themes raised by these extraordinary stories are a sequence of interludes that draw together the author's reflections on the nature and history of the cello, and her many interviews and encounters with contemporary cellists. Kate Kennedy's own relationship with the cello is a complicated one. As a teenager, she suffered an injury to her arm that imposed severe limitations on her career as a performer on the instrument that was her first love. She realised that, in order to understand what the cello meant to her, she needed to find out what the cello and, crucially, the absence of the cello had meant to some other cellists, past and present.Kate Kennedy has written an eloquent and multi-textured homage to this warmest of stringed instruments part quest narrative, part detective story, part philosophical meditation.

Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Violin Star 1, Student's book, with audio
Book SynopsisViolin Star offers beginner violinists a refreshing and inspirational choice of pieces to help build confidence and musical skills. The repertoire is imaginatively tailored to develop specific techniques through an exciting range of musical styles. The Student's books contain the solo violin parts, along with colourful illustrations, activities. Play-along tracks can be access via the download code in the book. The Accompaniment books include separate piano and violin accompaniments for every piece. Key features of the series: an approachable progression from beginner level to Grade 2, play-along tracks with each Student's book, which contain specially, created instrumental arrangements to convey style and mood, original compositions and arrangements by Edward Huws Jones. Edward Huws Jones is a composer, arranger and music educationalist. He studied at the University of York and the Royal Academy of Music, and went on to develop extensive experience as a string teacher. He has travelled widely to research fiddle-playing styles, and his original compositions are firmly established in educational repertoire.Trade ReviewViolin Star combines simple steps for learning with good fun. Throughout there are amusing, even topical, illustrations by Mark Beech. For every piece there are two colourful audio tracks, one with violin and one without. Huws Jones takes care not to allow any additional technical challenges to creep in too soon. Hardly any technical information is written out and explained, giving the teacher the opportunity to support the learning in whichever way is appropriate. The accompaniments deserve special mention, Huws Jones has reproduced the formula that works so well for his folk and world music collections; as well as a piano part, each piece comes with a violin part for the teacher which creates a satisfying accompaniment, giving the student an impressive idea of what the violin can do. They are so well planned and each new technical and music element is so carefully integrated,it is hard to see any reason to look elsewhere. In short, this series is set to become a classic. * Music Teacher *Table of ContentsBig Ben ; Little Ben ; Musette [J. S. Bach] ; Ready, Steady, Bow! ; Trick or Treat ; Fiddle Faddle [Trad. Oneworld Publications House of Music Raising the KannehMasons
Book SynopsisThe most talented musical family in the worldTrade Review‘Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason’s story offers a ray of sunshine. Her account of the daily struggle to manage the musical educations of her family’s seven talented children reaches a triumphant conclusion when second son, cellist Sheku, achieves worldwide fame in 2018, playing at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.’ * Financial Times, BOOKS OF THE YEAR *‘[Kadiatu’s] frank memoir reveals the eye-watering level of practical, emotional, intellectual and financial commitment required to raise seven outstanding classical musicians… Her beautiful, wise writing is its own music.’ * Daily Mail *‘Riveting, taking in prejudice as well as sacrifice. There are 4.30am starts, lost instruments, fractured wrists, all captured with vivid flourishes. A paean to camaraderie.’ * Observer *‘The story runs deeper… Kadie makes no secret of the sacrifices she’s had to make, whether physical (pregnancy never agreed with her), career (she gave up her job as an English lecturer 21 years ago), or financial.’ * Daily Express *‘An amazing, compelling, moving, unforgettable story...’ -- Lady Antonia Fraser‘The unique story of a unique family. Unique? Well I can’t think of any other family with seven children, all of whom are prodigiously talented musicians. Kadie gives a glorious account of how she and husband Stuart came to realise that from the earliest age their children communicated through music. She gives an honest account of the burdens as well as the joys, as she and Stuart knew they had a duty to fulfil, which imposed enormous financial strain on them. Now they can relish their children’s achievements — including Sheku’s performance at a royal wedding — and know all the sacrifice was worth it. Kadie combines this with a searing account of growing up as a mixed-race child in the Britain of the 70s. A deeply intimate and honest read on so many levels.’ * John Suchet *‘A memoir that both candidly portrays and fiercely protects [Kanneh-Mason’s] brood… The fortitude and determination of the parents leap from every page.’ * Guardian *‘The Kanneh-Masons are a unique family and the family’s matriarch, Kadiatu, has written a suitably unique and fascinating account of how day-to-day life works in an extraordinary household.’ -- Julian Lloyd Webber‘Having just spent time working with my friend Sheku at Abbey Road it’s wonderful to read about him and his terrific family. All the DNA that makes him one of the most important classical musicians – actually make that “all around” musicians – of his generation is captured so well in this loving book.’ -- Nile Rodgers‘This book is about hard work, determination and a triumph against the odds. It is truly inspirational!’ -- Paul Smith‘Eloquent and inspirational’ -- Surrey Life‘I was entranced by the inspirational memoir about an exceptional family of very young musicians who have already achieved phenomenal success… Beautifully written and hugely enjoyable, this book shows us what it takes to nurture children to fulfil their potential and offer their unique gifts to the world.’ * Bernardine Evaristo *‘An engaging and informative account of hard work and dedication, given context by [Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason’s] experiences of growing up with a Sierra Leonean father and a Welsh mother in 1970s–1980s Britain.’ * Herald *

She is told that it is an Italian instrument, named after its former Russian owner. Eager to discover all she can about its ancestry and the stories contained within its delicate wooden body, she sets out for Cremona, birthplace of the Italian violin. This is the beginning of a beguiling journey whose end she could never have anticipated.Making its way from dusty workshops, through Alpine forests, cool Venetian churches, glittering Florentine courts, and far-flung Russian flea markets, Lev''s Violin takes us from the heart of Italian culture to its very furthest reaches. Fox Chapel Publishing Violin Making, Second Edition Revised and
Book SynopsisUtilising fewer tools, this manual makes the violinmaking process easy for the everyday crafter. Using step-by-step instructions and hundreds of detailed drawings and colour photographs, the obscure language and unfamiliar techniques of instrument-making are given a populist overhaul in this newly revised and expanded resource. Requiring only basic tools and everyday woods, aspiring luthiers can begin each new project with full-size component cut-outs, which are included for each instrument piece. An inspiring full-colour gallery of violins made by other amateur crafters is also included. From cutting and shaping each piece to assembly and performance, the theory that only elite crafters can make wood instruments is debunked.Trade ReviewPacked with full-size patterns, step-by-step instructions - a nice departure from the usual use of photographs - you too can craft a wonderful instrument.I suspect that the book that Bruce Ossman has written, is the book he wishes he had available to him when he first fell in love with the violin while a student at Penn State University in the 1950s. It wasn't long before he self-taught himself to make his first instrument. As the sub-title of the book indicates, this book is not intended for the serious luthier making concert level instruments. Ossman's book is aimed at the average woodworker or motivated musician wishing to build a decent sounding, playable violin on his or her first attempt. The book begins with an overview of the entire 30-step building process utilizing many line drawings and sparse text. It's an excellent way to convey, to the novice builder, the violin in its deconstructed state and the logical sequence of steps necessary to pull it all together. This is followed by a gallery of color photos of the work of five makers, some amateurs and some professional. If one needs some inspiration before beginning a project, this section will provide it. The first chapter is devoted to the violin's anatomy and acoustics. Although there is enough literature on these topics alone to float a battleship, Ossman manages to cover the absolute bare-bone basics in just a few pages. The second chapter covers the materials which go into a violin as well as some of the preparatory steps necessary to build an instrument, including the fashioning of some simple tools like spool clamps, the body form and carving table. However, the discussion of tone woods, which one would expect in almost any other book on violin making, is almost non-existent here. The author's focus is definitely on construction. The heart of the book is chapter three, where Ossman takes the builder through the nuts and bolts of building a violin. He relies on a great many line drawings and straightforward text. Being so brief, there is no room for an in-depth discussions of why he opted for one method, approach, or material over any number of other options available to him. For example, the matter of finish is a topic about which countless books, articles, and scientific papers have been written, but Ossman simply instructs the builder to apply several coats of varnish with a sanding between coats. That's it. Still, he knows that if the reader follows his instructions, the end result will be a decent instrument, first time out. The appendix includes templates and full-sized plans, some of which are printed over two facing pages with the binding down the middle, but with registration marks so that when photocopied at full-size, they can be taped together. There is no instrument which is more steeped in mythology and lore than the violin, where grown men and women swear that the best instruments are made by the light of the August Moon, using 100 year old German spruce, harvested from the leeward sides of mountains and finished with shellac using some approximation of Stradivarius's mysterious recipe. Serious luthiers like these can discuss ad nauseum the merits of absolutely any aspect of the violin from the shape of the f-holes, to the types of strings used, to the glues employed, to the placement of the sound-post, and more. This is a different kind of book. For the first time builder, there is much to be said for Ossman's straightforward approach, where he has avoided many of the kinds of issues that more experienced builders delight in debating, but which might distract the novice from simply getting on with it.
