Elsevier Health Sciences Emergency Ultrasound Made Easy
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThis is a small, soft-backed, pocket book of just over 160 pages. Its aim is to provide a quick entry into the subject and act as an aide memoir for those faced with assessing a patient with ultrasound in an acute situation. Simple drawings are used to show probe position and example ultrasound images are provided. These images are taken from the type of relatively cheap portable ultrasound machine that is likely to be present in the emergency department. There are useful tips and handy hints on how to answer the binary question posed. Importantly, the book tells the reader what ultrasound can and cannot tell you in each scenario, and goes onto say what to do next. The book has well-structured headings enabling easy reference. It has a friendly style and is not in the least intimidating. I would encourage radiologists to make sure that those using ultrasound in this way are taught appropriate skills and know their limitations. This book is a good place for them to start. I like the final quote given, "a fool with a stethoscope will still be a fool with an ultrasound". I strongly urge each practitioner to buy a copy. Clinical Radiology Journal This is a very succinct, well-illustrated book, which is sharply clinically focused, and would be of considerable use to those who work in the emergency department and have an interest in adding diagnostic ultrasound to their clinical skills. Medical Journal of New Zealand This text provides an excellent introduction to most of the emergency applications for bedside ultrasound. It provides a practical, focused look at the role of bedside ultrasound for non-radiologists. Anaesthesia and Intensive Care In spite of the disappearance of white coats from British hospital wards, there remains a role for the pocket-sized book. This one achieves what the title claims. Having assumed that the reader has no practical experience of ultrasound scanning, it provides a concise and clear approach to emergency ultrasonography for the non-radiologist. The authors stress its roles and limitations, principally by stating in a didactic manner the questions it can or cannot answer. Although a multiauthor book, the editors have set out each chapter in the same way, supported by excellent drawings and ultrasound images. For the enthusiastic accident and emergency doctor or surgical resident with access to an appropriate ultrasound machine, this book should be invaluable. British Journal of Surgery

Chicago Review Press Wild Rescues: A Paramedic's Extreme Adventures in
Book SynopsisWild Rescues is a fast-paced, firsthand glimpse into the exciting lives of paramedics who work with the National Park Service: a unique brand of park rangers who respond to medical and traumatic emergencies in some of the most isolated and rugged parts of America. In 2014, Kevin Grange left his job as a paramedic in Los Angeles to work in a response area with 2.2 million acres: Yellowstone National Park. Seeking a break from city life and urban EMS, he wanted to experience pure nature, fulfill his dream of working for the National Park Service, and take a crash-course in wilderness medicine. Between calls, Grange reflects upon the democratic ideal of the National Park mission, the beauty of the land, and the many threats facing it. With visitation rising, budgets shrinking, and people loving our parks to death, he realized that—along with the health of his patients—he was also fighting for the life of “America’s Best Idea.”Trade Review"There are thousands of ways to die in the Great Outdoors, but an elite group of park rangers and paramedics mind the gap. One of them has finally brought us their riveting stories of rescue in this quick and interesting book full of drama and real-life heroism." Ben Montgomery, author of Grandma Gatewood's Walk" Wild Rescues is a book you want to read, not be featured in. But if you did have the bad luck to be the subject of one of these entertaining and occasionally scary stories, you'd be eternally grateful for Kevin Grange and his fellow Rangers. A paramedic with more than a decade of experience rescuing people, Grange talks of tumbles, heart attacks, freak storms, wild animals, and suicides in the National Parks with the steady voice of one who's seen it all, and then some. Whatever the emergency, specially trained National Park Rangers respond again and again in his pages, risking their necks to save lives. Written with a deep appreciation of the Wild and the awesome beauty of our National Parks, Wild Rescues lives up to its title. Armchair travelers will thrill to the hair-raising rescues, and seasoned trekkers will be reminded of the inherent dangers of their pastime. All will be grateful that people like Grange are on the job." Jim DeFelice, bestselling author of American Sniper"Kevin Grange details nearly everything that possibly could go wrong in a national park and yet still manages to make you more excited than ever to hit the trail." Conor Knighton, New York Times bestselling author of Leave Only Footprints: My Acadia-to-Zion Journey Through Every National Park"Writing at the intersection of medicine and adventure, Grange gives us a fascinating glimpse into rescues that would scare the pants off most of us. He writes with empathy, intelligence, humor and humanity. A captivating memoir. I couldn't put it down." Kate Siber, correspondent for Outside magazine and author of National Parks of the USA"National parks bring together visitors accustomed to more controlled circumstances with heat, cold, cliffs, whitewater, wild animals, and thin air that challenges aging hearts. Anyone who suffers misfortune under these conditions can only hope that Kevin Grange is on duty. This man loves his job." Jordan Fisher Smith, author of Engineering Eden and Nature Noir"This is one helluva book. Grange somehow manages to combine the madness of life on an ambulance with the serenity and awe of America's most beautiful places. Rangers, medics, tourists, adventurers (Alex Honnold makes a brief appearance), the fauna of Yellowstoneit's all here. And you should be too. Wild Rescues is unlike anything you've read." Kevin Hazzard, author of A Thousand Naked Strangers"This book shares experiences, insights, learning from an experienced paramedic and wilderness rescue provider who tells it like it is about the challenges of patient care in remote environments, and the sometimes complex decisions that need to be made when 911 is not at your beck and call. There is honesty in the descriptions of team dynamics and the lives of those dedicated to serving others. And those who appreciate our national parks will take renewed pride at the dedication of those who care for those lands and those who visit them, the NPS rangers, who wear many hatsrescuer, resource caretaker, firefighter, visitor welcome, law enforcerall to preserve this great American idea, our national parks." American Psychiatric Association Publishing Clinical Manual of Emergency Psychiatry
Book SynopsisThe second edition of Clinical Manual of Emergency Psychiatry is designed to help medical students, residents, and clinical faculty chart an appropriate course of treatment in a setting where an incorrect assessment can have life-or-death implications. Arranged by chief complaint rather than by psychiatric diagnosis, each chapter combines the fresh insights of an accomplished psychiatry trainee with the more seasoned viewpoint of a senior practitioner in the field, providing a richly integrated perspective on the challenges and rewards of caring for patients in the psychiatric emergency department. This newly revised edition presents current approaches to evaluation, treatment, and management of patients in crisis, including up-to-date guidelines on use of pharmacotherapy in the emergency setting; suicide risk assessment; evaluation of patients with abnormal mood, psychosis, acute anxiety, agitation, cognitive impairment, and/or substance-related emergencies; and care of children and adolescents. The editors have created an accessible text with many useful features: • A chapter devoted to effective strategies for teaching, mentoring, and supervision of trainees in the psychiatry emergency service.• Chapters focused on assessment of risk for violence in patients, determination of the need for seclusion or restraint, and navigation of the legal and ethical issues that arise in the emergency setting.• Clinical vignettes that contextualize the information provided, allowing readers to envision applicable clinical scenarios and thereby internalize important concepts more quickly• Constructive "take-home" points at the end of each chapter that summarize key information and caution against common clinical errors.• References and suggested readings to help readers pursue a deeper understanding of concepts and repair any gaps in knowledge. Emergency psychiatry is one of the most stressful and challenging areas of practice for the psychiatric clinician. The guidelines and strategies outlined in Clinical Manual of Emergency Psychiatry, Second Edition, will help psychiatric trainees and educators alike to make sense of the complex clinical situations they encounter and guide them to advance their skills as clinicians and educators.Table of ContentsContributorsForewordPrefaceAcknowledgmentsChapter 1. Elsevier Science Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging Inside Out
Book SynopsisSuitable for both graduate students and engineers in medical ultrasound research, this book provides a unified description of the physical principles of ultrasound imaging, signal processing, systems and measurements. It also includes over 1,000 references.Trade ReviewIn 2014, ten years after publishing the first edition of this book, Dr. Thomas L. Szabo has updated the text and produced this second edition. The printed version is approximately one-third thicker and comes with a new cover image; there is also an e-book version available. A lot of different items in ultrasound imaging are explained, starting with an introduction of imaging modalities, basic ultrasound wave propagation and interactions aspects with materials, as well as technological aspects as transducer models and various beam forming methods or clinical applications for ultrasound imaging and therapy. The MATLAB-files (query) from the first edition are still available to download. These files complement the explanations in the text and are useful for practical lessons in underpinning the theory with examples of various beamplots, Fourier transforms or for deepening the self-study. In this second edition, most chapters were revised and topics that have been published or introduced into clinical practice within the last decade were added. To comply with the technological developments in this field, two new chapters were introduced. The first one covers modern therapeutic applications, e.g., sonothrombolysis, transcranial or cosmetic ultrasound, while the second covers the topic of elastographic methods like acoustic radiation force impulse, strain or shear Imaging. The main strength of this book is its inclusion of an introduction and state-of-the-art review of physics and signal processing techniques used in ultrasound imaging and therapy in a single volume. The same topics can be found in different chapters as well, but including an explanation from another point of view that helps to clarify the complexity involved and understanding of the topics. Unfortunately, this new printed edition is available with black-and-white images only, while in the digital e-book, colored images are available. This is a disadvantage, as images like modern Doppler images or velocity scales are less useful to the reader when printed in black-and-white. However, the publishers have recognized this drawback and have made full-color images available for download from the book’s website. The book is now 17 chapters long and, for both physicists and physicians, is a rich source of information regarding basic physics and signal processing methods, covering a broad range of topics in medical ultrasound. It is an essential book to have on your tablet or bookshelf.
