Book SynopsisTHE SUNDAY TIMES BESTELLERUtterly brilliant. We all need to read this book' CLAUDIA WINKLEMAN''Patrick's book is fascinating and sobering and makes a compelling argument for going back to basics' JOE LYCETTWe used to care a lot about our clothes. We didn't have many but those we had were important to us. We'd cherish them, repair them and pass them on. And making them provided fulfilling work for millions of skilled people locally. ?Today the average person has nearly five times as many clothes as they did just 50 years ago. Last year, 100 billion garments were produced worldwide, most made from oil, 30% of which were not even sold, and the equivalent of one bin lorry full of clothing is dumped in landfill or burned every single second. Our wardrobes are full to bursting with clothes we never wear so why do we keep buying more?In this passionate and revealing book about loving clothes but despairing of a broken global system Patrick Grant considers the crisis of consumption and quality in fashion, and how we might make ourselves happier by rediscovering the joy of living with fewer, better-quality things.Weaving in his personal journey through fashion, clothing and the other everyday objects in his life, this is a book that celebrates craftsmanship, making things with care, buying things with thought and valuing everything we own. It explains how rethinking our relationship with clothing could kickstart a thriving new local economy bringing prosperity and hope back to places in our country that have lost out to globalisation, offshore manufacturing and to the madness of price and quantity being the only things that matter.''Presents a new way of thinking about the things we buy'' KEITH BRYMER-JONES

Book SynopsisA book of natural wonders, practical guidance and life-changing empowerment, by the author of the word-of-mouth bestseller If Women Rose Rooted. 'To live an enchanted life is to pick up the pieces of our bruised and battered psyches, and to offer them the nourishment they long for. It is to be challenged, to be awakened, to be gripped and shaken to the core by the extraordinary which lies at the heart of the ordinary. Above all, to live an enchanted life is to fall in love with the world all over again.' The enchanted life has nothing to do with escapism or magical thinking: it is founded on a vivid sense of belonging to a rich and many-layered world. It is creative, intuitive, imaginative. It thrives on work that has heart and meaning. It loves wild things, but returns to an enchanted home and garden. It respects the instinctive knowledge, ethical living and playfulness, and relishes story and art. Taking the inspiration and wisdom that can be derived from myth, fairy tales and folk culture, this book offers a set of practical and grounded tools for reclaiming enchantment in our lives, giving us a greater sense of meaning and of belonging to the world.

Hawthorn Press On Mending: Stories of damage and repair
Book SynopsisThe artist Celia Pym lives in London and has been exploring damage and repair in textiles since 2007. Working with garments that belong to individuals as well as items in museum archives, she has broad experience with stories of damage, from moth holes to accidents with fire. Textile language crops up in the body: mending language works on the body as well as on garments. We describe the body as mending after illness or injury – ‘I’m on the mend,’ someone might say if they’re feeling better. You might hear a doctor or nurse describe a broken bone as ‘mending well’, or broken bones are often described as knitting back together as the break heals. Pym is interested in exploring the varied evidence of damage, and how repair draws attention to the places where garments and cloth wear down and grow thin. These personal tales document the intimate damage caused to clothing by everyday use and the parallels with the consequent wear and tear on the body. Mending work builds on what is left behind. It’s not replacing, or remaking, or cutting apart and putting back together, instead it is slow work that makes things better. It conjures an unhurried recovery or change. In textiles, the act of mending wear-and-tear, thinning cloth or accidental damage builds on what already exists, anchoring threads and yarn into the robust healthy fabric and filling in the holes or reinforcing the areas that are weak. ‘Darning is small acts of care,’ she says, ‘and paying close attention.’ Trade Review'Celia Pym sees touch as an act of tenderness, whether that’s mending clothes or caring for others. Mending clothes that once belonged to someone you loved can take on a different significance. “It used to sit on the skin of someone you loved, it’s like a diffused kind of touch,” says Celia. “Touch isn’t only through your hands – your skin is your biggest organ – and clothing will take on the shape and the smell of someone and become an evocative reminder of the owner.” In her book, Celia tells the story of ten special items she’s mended. One that really illustrates the connection of touch to memory: “I mended my mother’s childhood sweater that my brother also wore – it was so small I couldn’t imagine my mother ever wearing it, but I could picture struggling to hold my brother when he was one and I was three,” she recalls. “The tactility of the sweater really conjured up that memory.”' Katie Antoniou, The Simple Things; Pym has been exploring mending since 2007 and has extensive experience of repairing small holes at heels, elbows and inside pockets, as well as working on more dramatic damage, whether it be from water, animals or moths. For Pym, the greater the damage, the better. Pym studied sculpture at Harvard and has an MA in constructed textiles from the Royal College of Art. She was a finalist in the Woman's Hour Craft Prize (2017) and Loewe Craft Prize (2017). Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Nouveau Muse National de Monaco and the Textile Arts Centre, New York and the Curator's Cube in Tokyo.' Toast Magazine; 'Pym acknowledges that in the process of mending she is, in fact, mending more than just the garment. The process enables people to approach her for advice and also to talk candidly about the meaning implied in restoring a treasured piece of clothing. Sometimes, the garment will have been the property of a loved one who has died, so repairing it, she says, enables the relationship to continue. The act of mending artfully is a form of caring and memorialisation.' From sourcing and butchering to dry ageing and curing, it challenges everything we thought we knew about the subject and invites readers to see fish for what it really is - an amazing, complex source of protein that can and should be treated with exactly the same nose-to-tail reverence as meat. It features more than 60 recipes for dozens of fish species ranging from Smoked Marlin Ham Caesar Salad, Fish Cassoulet and Roast Fish Bone Marrow to - essentially - The Perfect Fish and Chips. Many of us would like to eat more fish but worry about the environmental impact and often end up cooking the same old salmon fillet on repeat. The Whole Fish Cookbook will soon have you embracing new types and will change the way you buy, cook and eat fish. There is so much more to a fish than just the fillet, and it is indeed true what they say about there being more than just a handful of fish in the sea. Trade Review'My cookbook of the year.' – Yotam Ottolenghi, chef and author 'A mind-blowing masterpiece from one of the most impressive chefs of a generation.' – Jamie Oliver, chef and author 'There’s no other chef in the world that I would rather have scale me with his knife, dry-age me, roast me, glaze me, rest me, slice me, serve me than this powerful spirit! Thank you Josh for paying attention and caring the way you do! You are a shining light!' – Matty Matheson, chef and author 'Here’s one of those rare books that teaches you the basics. An inspiring read, and something to return to again and again — these pages are sure to be worn down quick.' – Rene Redzepi, chef and author 'If you love cooking fish, this book will be a revelation. You'll learn about dry-ageing to concentrate flavour and using every part but the bubble from the fish's mouth!' – Rick Stein, chef and author 'Well that was a smack around the head! This book is a game changer! Josh has basically taken all the old ways of fish prep and cookery and thrown the bad ones out the window then turned what remains on its head. This book is such an eye opener for me personally and at the same time makes so much sense when Josh explains how he thinks about the world of seafood. This is a very, very special book and in many years to come, I will look back at this moment in time and say to myself, "Remember that time when Josh from Saint Peter brought that book out and we all had to rethink the way we prepared and cooked fish and seafood forever?" Thanks Josh and to all the team at Saint Peter for sharing this knowledge with us! – Nathan Outlaw, chef and author 'Equal parts comprehensive technical manual and a giant porthole into creativity, chef Niland's honest and pure approach to all things fish is inspiring. The Whole Fish Cookbook beautifully articulates the entire animal approach while methodically opening the reader's mind to how responsibility and innovation coexist.' – Grant Achatz, chef and author 'Josh Niland is a genius.' – Nigella Lawson, author 'To desire simplicity is a very complex exercise. Josh Niland is an inspiration to our profession. In The Whole Fish Cookbook he offers us a wealth of enjoyment and enthusiasm. In a compelling way, he shows us that with time and patience you can discover the real depth of flavour.' – Bo Bech, chef and author 'I have followed Josh for such a long time and adore him and his use of every part of a fish – what a trailblazer he is … this book is for home cooks as much as chefs and I applaud it.' – Maggie Beer, author 'Josh Niland's uncompromising discipline combined with his unique scale-to-tail, sustainable seafood philosophy has led to a revolution in the way we think, feel, prepare and eat seafood.' – Kylie Kwong, chef and author 'I have been racking my brain trying to think of an American restaurant that comes close to the inventiveness and deep consideration that seafood is afforded at Saint Peter, to no avail ... Saint Peter is proof that when it comes to the modern dedicated seafood restaurant, Australia does it best.' – Besha Rodell, The New York Times 'Josh Niland can coax deliciousness from fish eyeballs, swim bladders and even fish blood with confidence and elegance ... his endeavours, sometimes hauntingly visceral, other times plainly cheeky, [are] always beautiful and restrained. His approach is going to change the way the world thinks about cooking and eating seafood.' – Melanie Hansche, Food & Wine 'This is a book anyone who cares about the future sustainability of our food sources and loves fish has to own.' – Sudi Pigott, The Spectator 'I have been waiting for a book like this: a primer that breaks down the elements of fish cookery. Many of us wish we ate more fish, yet we strangely don't tend to cook it much. Niland, a young Australian chef, demystifies fish, from knowing when it is fresh, to butterflying a sardine. This is a cheffy volume, featuring extraordinary creations such as black fish pudding or a coral trout tail glazed to taste like a Christmas ham. What excited me most were the simple, methodical tips on techniques such as poaching or how to get a really crisp skin on a pan-cooked fillet (weight it down slightly).' – Bee Wilson, The Sunday Times 'This book has gained an underground following among cooks, professional and amateur. The idea is simple, that we should honour fish with the same care and attention that we do meat and "butcher" them accordingly. The results may well change western cooking.' – Tim Hayward, The Financial Times 'Will this become as influential as Nose to Tail Eating? The Australian chef Josh Niland takes the rule of wasting no part of the animal and applies it to fish. It's not a book for casual cooks – not all of us are ready for cod liver and parsley on toast or fish fat caramel slice – but there are recipes and techniques that will benefit fish lovers.' – Tony Turnbull, The Times I have followed Josh for such a long time and adore him and his use of every part of a fish – what a trailblazer he is … this book is for home cooks as much as chefs and I applaud it. * Maggie Beer *With The Whole Fish Cookbook, Josh Niland has revolutionised the way we think about, and treat, fish. Nose to tail cooking, when it comes to animals, has been commonplace since humans started eating meat. So why has it taken so long for us to treat fish in the same way? In this eye-opening book, Niland teaches us not only how to cure and preserve fish, just as we do meat (think moonfish belly bacon and swordfish prosciutto), but also explains how he uses every little bit of every fish in his pioneering restaurant and fish butchery in Sydney. From the eyeballs and swim bladders (which he makes crisps out of), throats (which he deep fries), sperm sacks (which he treats like sweetbreads), blood (which he turns into blood pudding), bones (which he pulverises to enhance stocks) to all the remaining scraps (which he turns into grams). Niland has cleverly devised uses for parts that are usually thrown away without a second thought, inspiring not only chefs, but also fishing industries around the world. * Yotam Ottolenghi, The Guardian *'John Lewis may have recently stopped selling fish kettles due to lack of demand, but don't let that be a deterrent. Seafood chef Josh Niland believes we should treat piscine cuisine with the same nose-to-tail reverence as meat.' * The Herald, Scotland *'This book has gained an underground following among cooks, professional and amateur. Oneworld Publications The Way Home: Tales from a life without
Book SynopsisAn honest, radical and moving account of life off the grid. It was 11pm when I checked my email for the last time and turned off my phone for what I hoped would be forever. No running water, no car, no electricity or any of the things it powers: the internet, phone, washing machine, radio or light bulb. Just a wooden cabin, on a smallholding, by the edge of a stand of spruce. In this upfront and lyrical account of a remarkable life without modern technology, Mark Boyle explores the hard won joys of building a home with his bare hands, learning to make fire, collecting water from the spring, foraging and fishing. What he finds is an elemental life, one governed by the rhythms of the sun and seasons, where life and death dance in a primal landscape of blood, wood, muck, water, and fire – much the same life we have lived for most of our time on earth. Revisiting it brings a deep insight into what it means to be human at a time when the boundaries between man and machine are blurring. *** ‘Boyle's memoir of his first year off-grid is fascinating… A poetic meditation on the almost-mystical benefits of falling in sync with nature.’ —New Statesman ‘A warts-and-all look at an extreme way of life, but one that, by the end of this engrossing book, makes the world around it seem dysfunctional.’ —Irish Independent, BOOK OF THE YEAR 2019 ‘A beautiful and thought-provoking story that will inspire you to live differently. Boyle’s anti-technology stance upsets many, making this a must-read.’ * Booklist *‘In a world more connected than ever before we have never been so disconnected. By shaking off technologies of modern man and stepping back in time, Boyle shows the hardships and beauty of living with the seasons. A thought-provoking read which encourages the reader to appreciate many of the things we take for granted and question the way we live in the modern world.’ -- Megan Hine, author of Mind of a Survivor‘The book is an intimate description of his struggles to go back to basics and draws the reader into the sinews of the experience… This book is not a polemic, nor is it a rant against the modern age and its technologies; rather it is an account of a life that is lived to the beat of a more ancient drum. It is a delight as it draws you into the author’s life, to its rhythms, its challenges and its rewards. After I had finished reading The Way Home I was lonesome for Boyle’s world; a sure sign of a great read.’ * Irish Independent *‘Beautifully written (with a pencil as opposed to a computer), The Way Home is a paean to a life largely forgotten by the majority of humanity, an existence which appears more wholesome, fulfilling and rewarding as Mark builds his cabin, brews his wine and lives off the land.’ * Fermanagh Telegraph *
