Batsford Ltd My 60 Memorable Games: chess tactics, chess
Book Synopsis‘Still seen as the classic games collection’ – English Chess Federation 'It is a work of genius' – The Compulsive Reader One of the most important chess books ever written, reissued in celebration of a chess genius, Bobby Fischer. The American takes the reader through 60 of his games, describing his thoughts, the intricacies behind his and his opponent's strategies, the tactical justification of moves and the psychological battle in each one. You'll find beautifully simple positional play by out-of-this-world combinations that are just breathtaking. Fischer played nearly all of these games as a grandmaster so they are at the very highest level, but his lucid commentary makes every move and idea both accessible and understandable, meaning that every player will learn huge amounts from this book. It is an essential for each chess enthusiast, competitor and professional alike. The controversial alterations that were made to Bobby Fischer's words in the last edition have been omitted in this book, so only the author's own words are expressed, giving a true insight into one of the most gifted, troubled and controversial minds of the 20th century.Trade Review‘Still seen as the classic games collection’ English Chess Federation 'It is a work of genius... There are masterpieces here aplenty, undoubtedly, they will give pleasure to all who love chess.' The Compulsive Reader 'What is very attractive about the book – apart from the fact that Fischer was such an extraordinary player and analyst – is the honesty of his comments.' New In Chess 100 Endgames You Must Know: Vital Lessons for
Book SynopsisNew (4th) and improved edition of an all-time classic. The good news about endgames is: there are relatively few endings you should know by heart. Once you know these endings, that's it. Your knowledge never goes out of date! The bad news is that, all the same, the endgame technique of most players is deficient. Modern time-controls make matters worse: there is simply not enough time to delve deep into the position. Jesus de la Vila debunks the myth that endgame theory is complex and he teaches you to steer the game into a position you are familiar with. This book contains only those endgames that: show up most frequently are easy to learn contain ideas that are useful in more difficult positions. Your performance will improve dramatically because this book brings you: simple rules detailed and lively explanations many diagrams clear summaries of the most important themes dozens of tests.Trade Review"If you really have no patience for endgames, at least read Jesus de la Villa's '100 Endgames You Must Know'." -- Gary Walters Chess "The greatest strength of the book: breaking things down into well-worded chunks of easily digestible information." March Towers Chess Reviews "There's not much to say about it - you just have to buy it and read it! De la Villa does a truly wonderful job of explaining useful endgames in a calm measured manner that is clear enough for any strength of player to understand while still being interesting for stronger players. If you've never read an endgame book before, this is the one you should start with." -- Matthew Sadler, Grandmaster, former British Champion "Former Women World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk said she had really enjoyed De la Villa's '100 Endgames You Must Know' and had made flashcards out of the 100 positions. One side of the card had the position, the solution was written out on the reverse, and she quizzed herself until she knew all 100." -- Elisabeth Vicary USCF Online "Though Nunn's comments are clear and to the point, I found De la Villa's discussions easier to digest." -- Ted Greiner, British Correspondence Chess Association, Comparing '100 Endgames' with John Nunn's 'Understanding Endgames' "De la Villa does the job quite well. He emphasizes the practical and prefers understanding to memorization." -- John Donaldson, International Master jeremysilman.com "A clear exposition of the most important endgames, with exercises to test your knowledge." British Chess Magazine "The instructional explanations, the many diagrams, and the pleasant presentation make this endgame book an interesting publication for club players with a rating from 1600." Max Euwe Centre, Amsterdam "An excellent book to enhance your endgame skills." -- Johan Hut Gooi-en Eemlander Daily Newspaper "Every clubplayer should study this splendid book." -- B.H. Wilders Nederlands Dagblad "The layout and explanation both stand out for their clarity." CHESS Magazine "I like it a lot. Thames & Hudson Ltd Chess and other Games Pieces from Islamic Lands
Book SynopsisAmong the many treasures of The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, are hundreds of games pieces dating from the seventh to the nineteenth century CE. Intricately crafted in a rich variety of materials, including ivory, wood, ceramic, glass, jade, and agate, these tiny objects not only mark the evolution of familiar games into their modern forms, but also evoke the imperial palaces, military camps, and herders? tents in which they were played over many centuries. Some of the most beautiful are a famous group of rock-crystal chess pieces that were kept in a monastery church in northern Spain for more than 800 years. They are presented here alongside other spectacular examples, some of which have never before appeared in a publication, including both early figural chess pieces that originated in India and the Sasanian empire and the more abstract forms that later became popular throughout the Islamic world. Other games pieces, such as dice and pachisi sets and an important medieval Arabic treatise on chess, complete the collection. This volume provides the definitive catalogue of this outstanding group of games pieces, some of which scientific testing has dated with precision for the first time, and includes more than 300 striking images.Trade Review'Stunning' - Arab WeeklyTable of ContentsForeword by Sheikh Nasser Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah; Acknowledgments; Introduction; Part One: Early Development of Chess and Backgammon Pieces • Essay: Chess and Backgammon in the Iranian World; Catalogue Section A: Figural Chessmen • Part Two: Abstract Chessmen, Backgammon and Other Games Pieces • Essay: Nishapur and Early Islamic Games Pieces; Catalogue Sections: B) Ivory and Bone; C) Wood and Jet; D) Ceramic; E) Stone; F) Rock Crystal and Other Hardstones; G) Glass; H) Other Games and Related Items • Part Three: Chessmen and Other Games Pieces in Museum and Private Collections

Everyman Chess Opening Repertoire: The English Defence
Book SynopsisThe English Defence (1 d4 e6 2 c4 b6) is a dynamic, counter-attacking line, initially investigated by English grandmasters. Black aims to set White difficult problems to solve at the very earliest stage of the game. Black’s play is provocative – aiming to lure White into establishing a big pawn centre. This is a risky strategy as White falls behind in development and Black switfly becomes very active. However, if White’s response is more circumspect then Black can often manoeuvre into favourable structures reminiscent of positions arising from the Nimzo-Indian Defence, the Queen’s Indian Defence or even the Dutch. José González provides an excellent analysis of this complex opening and carves out a powerful repertoire for Black covering all lines after 1 d4. It is possible for White to avoid the "English battle" by playing either 2 Nf3 or even 2 e4 (a rare move for 1 d4 players but seen occasionally). Gonzalez champions an aggressive variant of the Dutch against 2 Nf3 and outlines a simple but effective French Defence repertoire to counter 2 e4. * A complete repertoire for Black to counter 1 d4. * The question and answer approach provides an excellent study method.

Book SynopsisJohn Healy''s The Grass Arena describes with unflinching honesty his experiences of addiction, his escape through learning to play chess in prison, and his ongoing search for peace of mind. This Penguin Classics edition includes an afterword by Colin MacCabe. In his searing autobiography Healy describes his fifteen years living rough in London without state aid, when begging carried an automatic three-year prison sentence and vagrant alcoholics prowled the parks and streets in search of drink or prey. When not united in their common aim of acquiring alcohol, winos sometimes murdered one another over prostitutes or a bottle, or the begging of money. Few modern writers have managed to match Healy''s power to refine from the brutal destructive condition of the chronic alcoholic a story so compelling it is beyond comparison.John Healy (b. 1943) was born into an impoverished, Irish immigrant family, in the slums of Kentish Town, North London.
