    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA practical guide to drawing and painting beautiful Islamic botanical patterns. The ancient art of Islamic pattern is steeped in tradition, with dazzling motifs inspired by geometry and nature. Islamic biomorphic patterns are the floral, organic and flowing designs that usually sit within a geometric frame and are sometimes referred to as Arabesque, Islimi or Rumi. These patterns can be found on anything from grand architectural monuments to illuminated manuscripts. In this practical guide, learn how to analyse 12 patterns from the Islamic world, such as Iznik pottery from Turkey and mosaics from Uzbekistan, and draw them with a combination of geometry and freehand technique. Then, discover how to paint these patterns in contemporary and traditional ways, and explore colour harmony with watercolour or gouache. Experienced artist Esra Alhamal also teaches you how to produce your own shell gold, prepare your paper, and outline with ink and a brush to create stunning Islamic art compositions. Following the historic way of learning from the masters, Esra starts each project by introducing and analysing a pattern sourced from historic ceramic tiles and illuminated manuscripts before showing you how to reproduce it with colourful step-by-step instructions. Soon you will have the knowledge to understand how these biomorphic patterns came to be and gain the skills to recreate designs and paint them beautifully.

Book SynopsisA rusting anti-aircraft fort in the North Sea. A German submarine base in France. A Flak tower in a Viennese park — more than 70 years after the end of World War II, its legacy can still be seen from Europe to Japan. World War II Abandoned Places explores more than 100 bunkers, pillboxes, submarine bases, forts and gun emplacements from the North Sea to Okinawa. Included are defensive structures, such as the Maginot Line on France’s eastern border with Germany, Germany’s own western and eastern border defences, and the Atlantic Wall, the German-built bunkers and pillboxes on the coast from Denmark down to Brittany. The book also includes both Hitler’s and Himmler’s Eastern Front bunkers in Poland. But beyond the military installations, the book explores the ruins of concentration camps, the empty village of Oradour-Sur-Glane, Hitler’s mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden and the dilapidated Nazi party rally grounds in Nuremberg, among other non-military places. With 150 outstanding colour photographs, World War II Abandoned Places is a brilliant pictorial examination of both the military and non-military legacy of the conflict.Table of ContentsIntroduction Book SynopsisBehind the Blue Door presents the decor of pioneering beauty-industry entrepreneur John Demsey’s six-story townhouse on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, an explosion of color, pattern, and art.“A riot of color, pattern, and art, beauty exec John Demsey’s six-story townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side bursts with exuberant life.”—Architectural Digest The muted, understated exterior of the townhouse on a tree-lined New York City street belies the sumptuous feast for the eyes that hits you upon opening its blue front door. Every room of its five main floors has its own saturated color scheme, filled with a David Hicks-inspired geometrically patterned rug, vibrant fabrics, new and vintage furniture, art and photographs covering walls, and sculptures and knickknacks topping tables and filling shelves. For the owner, John Demsey, the starting point was a pair of multicolored Louboutin boots, which inspired the palette of the living room rug. Working with interior decorator and friend Bibi Monnahan, he carefully chose and positioned each piece of furniture, work of art, and decorative object, and mounted his enormous photography collection. The result is a tour de force of maximalist design, now captured for all to see in Douglas Friedman’s luminous photographs and with Emmy Award-winning journalist Alina Cho as our eyewitness guide in a slipcased gift book featuring three gatefolds.

Intricately crafted in a rich variety of materials, including ivory, wood, ceramic, glass, jade, and agate, these tiny objects not only mark the evolution of familiar games into their modern forms, but also evoke the imperial palaces, military camps, and herders? tents in which they were played over many centuries. Some of the most beautiful are a famous group of rock-crystal chess pieces that were kept in a monastery church in northern Spain for more than 800 years. This book is a delight for the eyes and could tempt anyone to try this gorgeous art. Equipment is covered concisely and simply, including silk paints, clear outliner and habotai 8. Followed by sections on taking source photographs, how to capture movement, cropping, combining photographs, sense of scale and which areas to paint or stitch. The section of colour is really informative. The paragraph on understanding colour is probably something we're all aware of but a nudge to the mind increases our execution when painting. I love the 'Painting Without Resist' example, which is fully explained in eight photographs and includes lots of tips. This is followed by 'Lacework Trees' which is so beautiful. However, this is just one example of many; the seascapes are wonderful, and although machine embroidered, would give lots of tips and inspiration to painters. The wonders of this book are too numerous to mention and defy description. Perfectly written and illustrated, with gardens, woodland and seascapes. As I love trees and seascapes, this is a book I would love to own. -- Margaret Dunning * International Journal of the Guild of Silk Painters *This is a must-have instructional inspirational book for anyone interested in free-motion embroidery. Whether you fancy illustrating blooming gardens, tranquil woodlands or romantic seascapes, this book covers everything you need to recreate beautiful scenery using just two simple stitches. It even includes a showcase of Alison Holt's most exquisite machine embroideries. * Sew Magazine *Whatever type of sewing machine you have you can use it to make beautiful pictures. Just thread up your needle and put some fabric into a hoop and off you go. Well, there is a bit more to it than that which is where this book comes in… If you have the four books by this author on free-motion machine embroidery covering landscapes, seascapes, flowers and woodlands you won’t need this book as you already have it. If not, this new compendium volume contains all four in a revised format. I always love a craft with infinite possibilities but a minimum outlay of funds and which has scope for plenty of recycling and using up oddments, and this is one of them. A simple swing needle machine capable of straight lines and zigzag stitch is the main item, backed up with a supply of threads, plain cloth, paints, embroidery hoop and inspiration. The first part of the book tells you what you need to buy and how to prepare the cloth, use photographs, plan you work, choose threads and background colours and stitch. The rest of the book contains chapters on the themes contained in the earlier books so you can learn how to stitch flowers and foliage, create bosky woods, show the sea in all its moods and produce various landscape types. These pictures are beautiful, depicting very British scenes in the main (or at least northern temperate) and there are numerous exercises to try and several larger projects to work through. The projects all have plenty of staged photographs and this book is aimed at those who are new to this craft, while containing much material of use to those wanting to perfect their skills. Throughout are many of the author’s many pictures with captions explaining various points and lots of tips for better work. An excellent guide to free-motion machine embroidery that teaches most of what you need to know. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *This exciting title showcases textile artist Alison Holt's exquisite machine embroideries, whilst teaching the reader to 'paint' their surroundings using two simple stitches. There are stunning step-by-step projects so that the reader can put into practise their newly-acquire skills. * Craft Business *With two simple stitches, a straight stitch and a zig zag, the author Alison Holt demonstrates her talents beautifully. This book is just amazing and very pleasing to the eye. As a creative person, but not a good one I might add, I envy her talent. The projects in this book can not only be sewn, but also painted, so depending on your own preference, you can have a go at creating and even designing something with a stunning effect. You can also add organza, beads and ribbon to give definition to your chosen piece. The landscapes and seascapes are full of life, the colours vibrant and the subject is beautiful. The 10 projects are accompanied with instructions, techniques and ideas how to create the perfect picture. Of course for most of us this will take some practice, but I love this book, and even if I can achieve just one beautiful flower or a frothy wave then I would be happy. -- Tracy Shephard * Amazon *Issue March/April Alison Holt has been working with creative machine embroidery since the 1970s, 'painting' with thread in her unique style. Her forte is capturing natural landscapes in stitch - from coast to countryside - in realistic detail. Using two simple stitches (straight, zig-zag), Holt explains how to stitch portraits of your surroundings using free-motion embroidery, drawing on other techniques such as silk painting, colour mixing and working with photographs. She breaks the process down into clear stages, illustrated with helpful photographs and examples. An excellent investment for those interested in mastering pictorial machine embroidery. * Embroidery *Alison Holt is a graduate of Goldsmiths in London, where she studied fine art, textiles, and embroidery. She chose freehand machine embroidery as her medium and “started to explore her love of gardens and the countryside”. Alison has perfected the reproduction of nature to the point that her embroideries seem like photographs or paintings, until you look closer and realise the added layer of texture and dimension that the stitches provide. The technique she has developed to such success over the decades for her commissions, courses, lectures, workshops, and books also incorporates silk painting. “More textured areas, such as rough seas and windblown grasses, lend themselves to stitch, whereas smooth areas, such as distant sea and sky, are better represented by silk painting.” But you don’t have to be good at sketching or painting to give machine embroidered art a go. “Machine embroidery has a life of its own and some wonderful effects can be achieved without particular drawing skills.” The book shows you how to transfer a design to fabric, as well as how to use silk paints if you want to approach your work from that angle. In Machine Embroidered Art, Alison takes readers through each of the steps required to stitch a scene of natural beauty. She starts with a rundown of the materials and equipment you’ll need, most importantly a sewing machine – any machine will do, although one with the ability to do zigzag stitches is recommended. Threads, supplies for silk painting and a list of “other equipment” are given in detail, setting you up for early success. Alison works from photographs and always has a camera handy to shoot inspiring scenes. She then uses these and any sketches she may have done to create a design. She takes readers through the art basics of composition, balance, contrast, movement and more in the planning chapter, before moving on to light. Machine Embroidered Art is comprehensive in showing how Alison creates her works of textile art, and how you can do the same. Her skill and mastery of a sewing machine are evident. But it’s the pages and pages of incredibly lifelike landscapes and natural scenes that make it an inspiring read. It all started with his now-iconic collectible plates decoupaged with 19th-century artwork sourced from old and rare books, a process that credited him with elevating the decoupage technique into fine art. Over the past 25 years, the brand has expanded greatly to include home and general design gifts and products. Now, for the first time ever, comes the book John Derian fans have been waiting for. Culled from the thousands of images that have appeared in his biannual collections, here is an astoundingly beautiful assortment of nearly 300 full-bleed images in their original form. From intensely coloured flowers and birds to curious portraits, hand-drawn letters, and breathtaking landscapes, the best of John Derian is here. The result is an oversized object of desire, a work of art in and of itself, that brilliantly walks the line between commerce and art, and that is destined to become the gift book of the season.Trade Review“Thick, satisfying . . . gloriously oversize. . . . Book SynopsisHow Walt Disney and the Disney Studios wove the aesthetics of French decorative arts into the fairy-tale worlds of beloved animated films, from Cinderella to Beauty and the Beast and beyond Pink castles, talking sofas, and objects coming to life: what may sound like the fantasies of Hollywood dream-maker Walt Disney were in fact the figments of the colorful salons of Rococo Paris. Exploring the novel use of French motifs in Disney films and theme parks, this publication features forty works of eighteenth-century European design—from tapestries and furniture to Boulle clocks and Sèvres porcelain—alongside 150 Disney film stills, drawings, and other works on paper. The text connects these art forms through a shared dedication to craftsmanship and highlights references to European art in Disney films, including nods to Gothic Revival architecture in Cinderella (1950); bejeweled, medieval manuscripts in Sleeping Beauty (1959); and Rococo-inspired furnishings and objects brought to life in Beauty and the Beast (1991). Bridging fact and fantasy, this book draws remarkable new parallels between Disney’s magical creations and their artistic inspirations.Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art/Distributed by Yale University PressExhibition Schedule:The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (December 10, 2021–March 6, 2022)Wallace Collection, London (April 6–October 16, 2022)Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, CA (December 10, 2022–March 27, 2023)

Book SynopsisNow back in print, "the ultimate book-lover's gift book" (Los Angeles Times) In 1561-62 the master calligrapher Georg Bocskay (died 1575), imperial secretary to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I, created Mira calligraphiae monumenta (Model Book of Calligraphy) as a demonstration of his own preeminence among scribes. Some thirty years later, Ferdinand's grandson, the Emperor Rudolf II, commissioned Europe's last great manuscript illuminator, Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1600), to embellish the work. The resulting book is at once a treasury of extraordinary beauty and a landmark in the cultural debate between word and image. Bocskay assembled a vast selection of contemporary and historical scripts for a work that summarized all that had been learned about writing to date-a testament to the universal power of the written word. Hoefnagel, desiring to prove the superiority of his art over Bocskay's words, employed every resource of illusionism, color, and form to devise all manner of brilliant grotesques, from flowers, fruit, insects, and animals to monsters and masks.Trade Review“It’s back! Out of print for a decade, this gorgeously produced, slip-cased facsimile edition of an exquisite Renaissance manuscript unfurls a battle between brilliant advocates for the beauty of the written word (Hungarian scribe Georg Bocskay) and the painted image (Flemish illuminator Joris Hoefnagel). The small volume, with a bonus alphabet book tucked in at the end, is a sheer pleasure to hold in your hands.” ― Christopher Knight ― Los Angeles Times

The modern trends away from realism and the interest of the younger generation in psychedelic and art nouveau styles provides favourable ground for the Celtic art revival which the widespread interest in this new edition seems to indicate is possible. When this book first appeared, it was hailed as a ''veritable grammar of ornament''. Book SynopsisStep into a world of witchcraft both good and evil, where the iconic character of myth and legend is once more brought uniquely to life. From the first alleged witch to be hanged in Salem, and Goya’s depictions of witchcraft, to Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Hogwarts, and beyond, there is no shortage of inspiration, but also of recycled characterizations and central-casting stereotypes. Now, 30 of the world’s most talented fantasy and concept artists discover their own, personal manifestation of the witch. Starting with research, readers will witness the alchemy of details extracted from the seemingly mundane transformed the whole body of the witch, fantastical yet unnervingly believable at the same time. The design process goes on to cast spells not only on appearance, but also the environment, practices, and magical belongings of this one-of-a-kind witch. With the final design depicted as both a line drawing and in full color, the whole character and their world is defined. A summary of each witch details their background, behaviour, strengths, weaknesses and, of course, powers. The result is 320 pages encased in a beautifully finished hardback cover, the ultimate field guide to designing witches that transcend time, place, and even the most vivid imagination.
