St. Martin's Publishing Group The Great Prostate Hoax How Big Medicine Hijacked
Book SynopsisEvery year, more than a million men undergo painful needle biopsies for prostate cancer, and upward of 100,000 have radical prostatectomies, resulting in incontinence and impotence. But the shocking fact is that most of these men would never have died from this common form of cancer, which frequently grows so slowly that it never even leaves the prostate. How did we get to a point where so many unnecessary tests and surgeries are being done? In The Great Prostate Hoax, Richard J. Ablin exposes how a discovery he made in 1970, the prostate-specific antigen (PSA), was co-opted by the pharmaceutical industry into a multibillion-dollar business. He shows how his discovery of PSA was never meant to be used for screening prostate cancer, and yet nonetheless the test was patented and eventurally approved by the FDA in 1994. Now, doctors and victims are beginning to speak out about the harm of the test, and beginning to search for a true prostate cancer-specific marker.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology
Book SynopsisThe first edition of The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology introduced a completely new paradigm for detecting bladder cancer by urine cytology. This system concentrated on defining morphological characteristics of the most clinically significant form of bladder cancer, High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma. This new approach has been widely accepted throughout the world, and has become part of the daily practice of cytology. Considering that the first edition of The Paris System (TPS) introduced a new model of urinary cytodiagnosis, verification and expansion of initial material and data were anticipated. Based on evolving knowledge and readership requests, the group of highly experienced authors have created a new edition of TPS. This second edition includes areas and issues not originally covered. A new chapter on urine cytology of the upper tract, a rarely addressed topic, has been introduced. Furthermore, the issue of cellular degeneration is discussed in the criteria of all diagnostic categories. Examples of standardized reports are included in each chapter. Most importantly, a separate chapter presents data defining the risk of malignancy (ROM) for each diagnostic category to inform clinical management. New high quality images augment those of the first edition to better illustrate diagnostic clues and potential pitfalls. In addition to chapters on diagnostic criteria, current concepts of pathogenesis of bladder cancer, specimen adequacy and preparation, and ancillary tests are covered in separate chapters. A bonus to the volume is a comprehensive history of urine as the earliest diagnostic sample of human disease, richly illustrated with artworks from major museums. Written by internationally recognized authorities, this comprehensive and evidence-based guide to urine cytology is supported by the newest data confirming the original concept and significance of diagnostic criteria defining High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma. TPS is an essential tool for anyone who is practicing urinary cytology, including cytotechnologists, pathologists-in-training and practicing pathologists. This book should find a place in every cytology laboratory throughout the world. The Concept has been endorsed by the American Society of Cytopathology, and the International Academy of Cytology.Table of Contents

CRC Press Androgen Deficiency in The Adult Male Causes
Book SynopsisJust what is the andropause? Although acceptance of the andropause concept by the medical community is growing, it is still a hotly debated issue. But as a busy clinician you have patients to treat and you need information. So where can you find the information you need to understand, diagnose, and treat this condition? Androgen Deficiency in the Adult Male: Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment distills the knowledge acquired by author Dr. Malcolm Carruthers in his 25 years of research and clinical experience in diagnosing and treating the andropause into a comprehensive, detailed clinical resource.Dr. Carruthers documents the history of the search for testosterone treatment from antiquity to the awarding of the Nobel Prize to Adolf Butenandt and Leopold Ruzicka for synthesizing testosterone and patenting its production some 4,000 years later. He discusses the causes of androgen deficiency, the male menopause or andropause, and recent advances in its diagnosis. The text includes reviews of the literature in each section and a fund of bibliographic references gleaned from the author's years of research in this field. This combination of features makes Androgen Deficiency in the Adult Male: Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment an invaluable and practical clinical guide, a complete and detailed reference volume, and a cohesive and readable textbook.Table of ContentsHistory of Testosterone. Elsevier Health Sciences Crash Course Renal and Urinary System Updated
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewOverall this book covers the renal curriculum very well. There is an emphasis on theoretical knowledge but also some good practical clinical information present to aid the student on clinical placement. I found this book very easy to read and intuitive in the way each section follows. I would not change this formula. I think the current system of 'pull out' boxes works well and too many types of boxes may overcomplicate. For me the mix is very good. Dr Steve Riley, Senior Lecturer in Nephrology, Cardiff, July 2009 The book certainly covers the curriculum, no doubt. This is an impressive piece of work & if really done by a medical student then hats off to them. Well done. As noted above, it is readable & nicely laid out with good diagrams & figures. Paddy Gibson, Nephrologist, Department of Renal Medicine, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, EDINBURGH This is a very helpful book for revision of the complex renal and urinary systems. The book is full of diagrams, tables and flow charts which simplify learning of these difficult specialities. I feel that the basic sciences at the start of the book is more appropriate for the earlier years of medical school where I feel it would be useful for PBL cases, however, the book was also useful during my 4th year clinical attachment on the renal wards, where this book was a great revision tool. Steve Gilchrist, Medical Student, University of Edinburgh, Jun 2009 A great series! Clearly written, great diagrams, lots of questions, great for revision. Easy to dip into and out of! A great overview of the Renal System! A must have for all those in their clinical years and approaching finals! Sarah Edwards, Peninsula Medical School, 27th Feb 2009 The language used is very easy to understand. The content concentrates on breadth rather than depth is therefore useful for revision..the diagrams are very clear and concise, often explaining the concepts better than the texts. Also the little 'pointer' boxes attracted me to useful information. I particular liked the flow charts for diagnosis. The different ways of testing knowledge in the self assessment section is very useful. Overall the book is very useful for revision purposes with clear, easy to understand text and diagrams with a substantial clinical section. Fatima Rashid, University of Keele, July 2008 Never underestimate the importance of the kidney! At first glance, the renal system may not excite but this concise summary of a fairly complex system would make a useful addition to your collection of medical books. You will undoubtedly find yourself referring to this book time and again. It covers everything from the renin-angitoensin system to dialysis to prostate cancer. The book encompasses the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the renal and urinary systems in an easy to read format. Finally, as with all books in the Crash Course series, there is an extensive self-assessment section with MCQs and SAQs. Michael Wilson, University of Glasgow, Jul 2008 Crash Course is a simple concise summary of the basics of renal physiology and pharmacology. It provides an excellent basis for last minute revision for the renal compnent of the medical curriculum or BMedSci. This second edition responds to continual changes in practice: The chapters on urological cancers including prostate cancer, bladder cancer and renal cancer have important updates due to emergence of new evidence and changes in NICE, EAU and AUA guidelines. Substantial revisions to other sections such as paediatric urology, female urology, urinary stone disease, benign prostatic hyperplasia and uro-technology to meet standards of current best practice. Adds an extra chapter on the TNM classification of urological cancers.
