Book SynopsisFormer Principal of London Seminary, Philip Eveson, shows the unchanging relevance of the book of Chronicles for us today. In today's world, when Old Testament books like Chronicles are denied as being historically inaccurate, Eveson constantly shows us that the opposite is true. Throughout the commentary, he not only argues that it is free from historical error, but Godbreathed, and therefore able to make us wise for salvation. Far from being irrelevant to the modern reader, Eveson brings helpful, insightful application from the Biblical narrative. Eveson's commentary is split over two volumes: Volume one containing 1 Chronicles and Volume two containing2 Chronicles. However, he reminds us that 1 and 2 Chronicles are one undivided book and they should be read as such. The genealogical line that the chronicler wrote of all looked to the Messiah. In reading Chronicles,so should we. The commentary is appropriate for all Christians who desire to see their Lord in all the scriptures. Ev

Book SynopsisAn indispensable guide for exploring the literary, historical, and theological issues behind the Old Testament.Trade Review'A Survey of the Old Testament by Andrew E. Hill and John H. Walton is a meticulously crafted survey written with remarkable clarity, containing insightful commentary, vibrant images of archaeological discoveries and historical contexts, invaluable tables, stimulating questions, and scholarly rigor examining the rich tapestry of the literary, historical, and theological aspects of the Old Testament. It is an exceptional introduction and essential companion for students, scholars, and individuals eager to embark on a meaningful journey through the Old Testament that breathes life into the ancient world and sheds light on its enduring cultural and theological significance.' * Kyung Baek, vice president of academic affairs and director of biblical and theological studies, Pacific Life Bible College *'A wonderful introduction, both textual and visual, to the Old Testament as Holy Scripture that is rooted in the realities of ancient time and space. Highly recommended!' * Iain Provan, retired, Marshall Sheppard Professor of Biblical Studies, Regent College *'Combining attention to historical backgrounds, literary features, and theological themes with a nuanced treatment of critical issues and hundreds of images that bring the world of the Old Testament to life, Survey of the Old Testament has been my go-to textbook for introductory classes. The fourth edition points readers to a wealth of recent resources for further learning and offers updated discussions of key issues, which will make it a preferred text for the next generation of students.' * Brittany Kim, adjunct professor at North Park Theological Seminary and coauthor of Understanding Old Testament Theology *'Hill and Walton are tour guides on an adventure through the Old Testament with years of experience living with the text. They not only help students navigate the facts and figures, themes, and theology of the Old Testament but also invite students to explore and appreciate the riches of ancient Israel's history and culture. This is not merely a textbook. It is a veritable encyclopedia of Old Testament studies!' * Kyle Greenwood, associated faculty of Old Testament, Denver Seminary *'Hill and Walton ask good questions for the beginning student as they turn its pages and seek to understand it as Christian Scripture. The strength of the volume lies in its exploration of key themes, presented as they arise in each biblical book, and also as they intersect with the larger canonical storyline. This provides a unified approach to the Christian canon and a deeper awareness of how the Old Testament fits into the Christian Bible. The work is also supported by a treasury of visuals, such as maps and photographs of landscapes and artifacts, which help bring the biblical world to life.' * George Athas, director of research, Moore Theological College *'Hill and Walton's introduction to the Old Testament addresses key questions and content in meaningful ways. Vivid pictures, archaeological artifacts, and colorful maps make this journey an enjoyable one, whether you are a student or an interested reader!' * Beth Stovell, professor of Old Testament and chair of general theological studies, Ambrose University *'Hill and Walton's standard evangelical introduction to the Old Testament has only gotten better with its fourth edition. Expect the same authoritative content, updated to reflect the latest scholarship, but in a tighter and cleaner layout that is visually appealing and creates a more compact textbook for a new generation of readers.' * Kevin L. Anderson, professor of Bible and theology, Asbury University *'Hill and Walton's Survey of the Old Testament has been a trusted textbook for many years, including in my own training as an Old Testament specialist. This new version retains the best features of its predecessors while continuing to provide the latest content in a user-friendly way. Highly recommended!' * Jerry Hwang, affiliate research professor, Singapore Bible College *'How rare to find a new edition that's shorter and more focused. Hill and Walton lightly update their standard college textbook and tighten the spotlight on the key message of each Old Testament book. An attractive starting point for budding explorers.' * Andrew Malone, lecturer in biblical studies, Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia *'I'm always pointing my students to Walton and Hill's A Survey of the Old Testament. But I also find myself going back to this book again and again because it keeps yielding fresh insight on key topics in every Old Testament book. If you want to engage seriously and faithfully with God's Word, this comprehensive text will serve you and your students brilliantly.' * Dan Y-W. Wu, lecturer in Old Testament, Moore Theological College *'It is a joy to commend this updated edition of Hill and Walton's classic textbook to a new generation of Old Testament students. Readers will gain insights about the overall purpose and message of each Old Testament book, as well as the most significant issues in the secondary literature--such as historicity, archaeology, and other major interpretive trends. All the while, conservative and critical positions are summarized from an evangelical perspective. Students, pastors, and scholars would do well to keep this book on their short stack of key resources on the Old Testament.' * Ian Vaillancourt, professor of Old Testament and Hebrew, Heritage Theological Seminary and author of The Dawning of Redemption *'John Walton and Andrew Hill are two of the very best Old Testament scholars of my generation. I am so thankful they have updated their bestselling and influential textbook, A Survey of the Old Testament, for the next generation of students. I enthusiastically recommend it.' * Tremper Longman III, distinguished scholar and professor emeritus of biblical studies, Westmont College *'Students and instructors alike will enthusiastically welcome the latest edition of this trusted textbook. Updated chapters helpfully synthesize the contents of the biblical books in the form of major themes, enabling students to readily grasp what each book is about and to connect its message with the Christian faith. What's more, like its previous editions, the book boasts an attractive and engaging layout with an abundance of color graphics. Students will profit immensely from this accessible and insightful introduction to the Hebrew Bible, resulting in a greater enjoyment of and appreciation for the Old Testament as Christian Scripture.' * Benjamin J. Noonan, associate professor of Old Testament and Hebrew, Columbia International University *'This is a well-written and finely illustrated survey of the Old Testament. It is readable for college students, and both students and professors can rely on it for evenhanded treatment of difficult topics in Old Testament studies. This new updated edition is welcome.' * Richard Averbeck, professor emeritus of Old Testament and Semitic Languages, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School *'This new edition of A Survey of the Old Testament will continue the usefulness of this work that has been so widely used previously. With its evenhanded yet basically traditional approach, it can be recommended to all who look for a trustworthy handbook to read alongside the Bible itself.' * John Oswalt, visiting distinguished professor of Old Testament, Asbury Theological Seminary *'With deep awareness of the historical context and literary form, Hill and Walton provide guidance on both the content of the Old Testament and how to read it well. With this fourth edition, they have provided a new generation of readers with invaluable assistance in understanding and applying its riches.' * David Firth, tutor in Old Testament, Trinity College Bristol *'With good reason, A Survey of the Old Testament has been a leading textbook on the Hebrew Scriptures in colleges and seminaries around the world. Summary treatments, enhanced by stunning pictures, color maps, and helpful charts, enable students to learn the biblical material with an appreciation for its literary quality, theological message, and cultural setting. Now in its fourth edition, this remains a classroom standard that will surely benefit a new generation of learners.' * L. Book SynopsisMany of us know and love the stories and characters of the Old Testament such as Joseph, Moses and Jonah. But how do we view its importance in relation to New Testament teaching and our 21st century experiences? This accessible yet powerful addition to the Pocket Guide series draw together the threads of Scripture to help us understand the power of God’s word when viewed in its completeness. Trade Review...If the world is still here in a hundred years' time, these thrilling pages will still be looked upon as a treasure trove among God's faithful people. -- Richard Bewes (OBE (1939 – 2019), formerly of All Souls Church, Langham Place, London, England)...it is a huge privilege to commend the author of the Pocket Guide you now hold in your hand- although, quite frankly, his work speaks for itself so well that it does not need me to approve it. -- D. A. Carson (Emeritus Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois)In nearly every conceivable way this little book is outstanding to the point that I can hardly believe so much useful content is concentrated into so few pages. If your typical book is coffee, Loving the Old Testament is espresso. It's clearly written, interesting, supported by meticulous and creative scholarship, not infrequently humorous, reverent and pious (in the best sense), and very practically applicable especially to a local church context. Furthermore, if you know anything about biblical studies from the last 100 years, you'll know that Moyter's is essentially the evangelical Gandalf. If you're a pastor, I'd encourage you to buy a couple dozen copies and keep them on your free book table or stocked in your bookstore. -- Timothy Raymond- Credo MagazineNow 90, Alec Motyer retains all his old clarity, warmth and charm as he shares his infectious affection for, and insight into, Jesus's Bible. This is a first-rate get-you-started book. -- J. I. Packer ((1926–2020), Board of Governors’ Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, Canada)A Christian's Pocket Guide to Loving the Old Testament, and Alec Motyer's recent volume Preaching? prove that faithful believers 'will still bear fruit in old age-they will stay fresh and green.' (Ps. 92:14) Why? Because they will continue proclaiming, 'The Lord is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.' (Ps. 92:15) -- Tim Keller ((1950 – 2023) Redeemer City to City)Motyer is that rare scholar who can write plainly, say something quotable in a few words, and write sympathetically to ordinary folk. Who might benefit from this little book? My ninth-grade Bible students last year would have been much helped. This year's kids will thank me. It would make a nice study for a Sunday school class. Even the minister who has preached and taught through the Old Testament will enjoy the read and learn something, too. -- New HorizonsA welcome volume that will be useful for teachers trying to convince their students about the value of the Old Testament or for intelligent lay persons to learn from a seasoned pastor-theologian why they should love the Old Testament. -- Themelios Journal

  • Questioning God

    Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Questioning God

Book SynopsisMany today may see the relationship between God and humanity as one of passive submission and thus unquestioning. Two outstanding Dominicans, Timothy Radcliffe and Lukasz Popko. suggest otherwise. Questioning God explores Biblical conversations with God and there is no genuine conversation without true questions. Our God question us, from the first conversation of God and humanity in the Bible, where God asks Adam, ''Where are you?'', to the Risen Lord''s questioning Peter on the beach: ''Do you love me more than these others?'' But humanity questions God too, as in the audacious questioning of Jesus by the Samaritan woman at the well. In this process of mutual questioning, humanity is drawn ever deeper into the life of God, the eternal conversation of the Trinity. Insights into these transformative conversations are helpful as the Church questions how to be faithful to God in this uncertain time. Fr Popko offers a fresh translation and insights of Biblical s

Book Synopsis Dale Ralph Davis plunges right into the middle of King David’s hard times with a study that is resonant for our lives. King David’s faith brought him through the muddy parts of life. Will we find that depression is our final response to a hard path? Will faith carry us across? Find the encouragement that Psalms 13–24 hold for the Scripture–filled life. Trade ReviewThank you Dr. Davis, for "yielding to the temptation" to continue what you began with Psalm 1-12. -- Albert N. Martin (Served as pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, Montville, New Jersey for over forty years and taught Pastoral Theology at the Trinity Ministerial Academy )Sharp, personal and funny illustrations, a vital, earnest and readable style, deep, nourishing, practical application built on a foundation of passionately thorough biblical, theological and linguistic scholarship. -- Colin Buchanan (Christian Children's Recording artist and author, Sydney, Australia)Dale Ralph Davis has provided another faithful, lively and refreshing set of expositions. All Christians will benefit from this book and I hope it is read widely. -- Sam Allberry (Immanuel Church Nashville; author, ‘What God Has To Say About Our Bodies’)Always fresh, always insightful. Dale Ralph Davis shows you what's there and leaves you wondering why you didn't see it before! -- Colin S. Smith (Senior Pastor, The Orchard, Arlington Heights, Illinois and President, Unlocking the Bible)Awesome scholarship... together with a passion for hearing and passing on in a thoroughly down-to-earth style what God is saying to His church today. -- Michael Wilcock (Formerly Director of Pastoral Studies at Trinity College, Bristol & Vicar of St Nicholas, Durham)... another excellent book on a part of the Old Testament by Dale Ralph Davis... he has an easy, almost conversational style, in which he exegetes the text and deals with the translation of key words without getting bogged down. Five star! -- Grace MagazineDale Ralph Davis is among the finest expositors of the Old Testament alive today. His style is unique and his content infectious. A pastor at heart, his insights are always governed by an absolute loyalty to the text, a belief that the Bible was written for today as much as yesterday, and a desire to encourage his readers to fall in love with Scripture and to trust it. These expositions of Psalms 13-24 tantalizingly suggest there may be further volumes given the enormous success of the first set (Ps. 1-12). What a treasure that would be! In the meantime, these expositions are pure gold. -- Derek W. H. ThomasTrue worship is, as Dale Ralph Davis puts it in this brilliantly helpful book on Psalms 13-24, 'from the top down'. So the same has to be true of our devotional reading of God's word. Our true comfort, our deep encouragement to persevere, our solid growth in trust amidst the mayhem of life all start with God as he has spoken in his word. It's this capacity to draw fresh devotional truths from the deep well of the biblical text that is the author's great gift. Here is a fellow-traveller who is realistic and properly grounded on the same planet that the rest of us occupy, refreshing us along God's way with God's revealed and written truth. So the author's profound understanding of what the text of the Psalms means leads to profound help with what the Psalms really do mean for you. Dale Ralph Davis has these two things the right way round. This book is an absolute gem! -- Dominic Smart

But is this the whole message of Ecclesiastes? With imagination and clarity Derek Kidner introduces this Old Testament book which speaks so powerfully to our generation. His love of Hebrew poetry and his understanding of the biblical mind shine through in his careful passage-by-passage exposition. The Bible Speaks Today series covers every book of the Old and New Testaments, as well as Bible themes that run through the whole of Scripture. These revised editions are updated with contemporary language and Bible translations to help you to follow and to teach the Bible in today's world.

Book SynopsisThe place of the Law and its relationship to religious observance and faith is a contested topic in the study of both the Old and New Testament. In Law and Religion, members of the Erhardt Seminar group provide an insight into the debate, probing key topics and offering new contributions to the subject. Their essays are grouped into three sections, focussing in turn on the Law''s place in Israelite religion, in the Jesus tradition, and in Paul and the Apostolic tradition. Thus, the foundation of the connection between law and religion in ancient Israel is explored, along with the decisive influence of the Deuteronomic reform and the radical new understanding now emerging of the later development in Judaism of the New Testament Period. So, also, the contemporary challenge to the conventional picture of Jesus and the Law is addressed, the attitude of Paul is shown in new light, and post-Pauline developments are examined. Readers will find in this symposium a refreshing breadth of opinionTrade Review'This is a most important collection which will be significant for biblical ethics as well as for the narrower questions of law, and deserves to be widely known' - Expository Times 'These essays. touch on three areas which are in the centre of scholarly debate at present, and together make a useful contribution to all three' - Morna D. Hooker, in Epworth Review 'It can be said that none of these thirteen papers is second rate, many are lively and original, and all are highly informative.' - P.S. Cameron, in Scottish Journal of Theology 'New light is shed especially on the Jewish context of Jesus' ministry, but there is valuable work on the Old Testament, Qumran, John, Paul and Luke-Acts. A theme common to most of the book is the varied ways in which law might be understood, and the need to suspect simple interpretations. Of interest to graduate students and specialists, but also useful to ministers, undergraduates and intelligent college students.' - Walter Houston, in Theological Book ReviewTable of ContentsAbbreviations Introduction Part I. Book SynopsisLatest addition to this comprehensive and approachable commentary series for general readers.Trade ReviewGoldingay’s magnum opus is nearly complete with the publication of Jeremiah for Everyone, while Lamentations and Ezekiel for Everyone will be available in April 2016, followed by Daniel and the Twelve for Everyone in June 2016. Goldingay offers an introduction which sets the Book of Jeremiah in its Old Testament context at the time of the Babylonian Exile (587 BC). Jeremiah’s ministry lasted over 40 years. His warnings fell on deaf ears as the disaster was so long coming that Jeremiah lost credibility as a prophet. The Book of Jeremiah contains many stories from the life of the prophet and the kings of that time, along with a record of his prophecies, prayers, sermons and laments. Chapters 1-25 are mostly prophecies, chapters 26-45 are narratives, and chapters 46-51 contain prophecies about the surrounding nations. Chapter 52 is a resume of the story, repeating 2 Kings 25. As in each of these volumes, Goldingay gives his own translation followed by a contemporary story then a comment on the text. Passages are elucidated by Goldingay’s thorough knowledge of the text and historical settings. A glossary at the back covers terms such as Assyrians, Ephraimites, Persians, Torah, remnant, Second Temple, exile, Zion. Jeremiah’s 52 chapters are presented in 58 portions, which could be read daily over a two month period or spread out over a year. This volume is a very accessible introduction to this complex but compelling prophet. -- Jill Firth * Blog: patheos *Thought-provoking and edifying points. * Churchman Journal’s Spring 2017 *

Book Synopsis30 Old Testament Passages with Deeper Meaning invites everyday Bible readers to discover the greater depth in familiar verses. Michael Williams brings years of experience in explaining how often-overlooked cultural, linguistic, historical, and theological clues in ordinary biblical texts reveal deeper meaning for those who are made aware of them.Trade Review'An illuminating exploration of 30 remarkable Old Testament texts by a master teacher. Each chapter provides an entry point into not only a single verse's meaning, but to larger dimensions of the worldview and culture reflected in the Hebrew scriptures. The book is accessible to all, and will also inspire teachers who seek to translate insights from advanced theological study for wide audiences.' * John D. Witvliet, Calvin Institute of Christian Worship *'I love finding new treasures in Scripture, further enhancing seemingly familiar and ordinary verses. By uncovering some of the word plays and allusions original readers would notice, Michael Williams shares some of these gems with us, reinvigorating our time in Scripture with the sparkle of God's glory.' * Aimee Byrd, author of The Sexual Reformation and Recovering from Biblical Manhood and Womanhood *'I thoroughly enjoyed reading Old Testament Passages with Deeper Meaning. Michael Williams brings out the 'hidden depths' of thirty Old Testament passages by careful attention to context and the details of the passage. He is not discovering some secret meaning, but rather brings out the surprising dimensions of the passage he is so skillfully reading. Written in an accessible and winsome style, I recommend this book for all lovers of the Bible.' * Tremper Longman III, PhD, Distinguished Scholar and Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies, Westmont College *'Michael Williams is a highly perceptive reader of the Bible and his insights into it are sharp and penetrating. But he wears his rich learning lightly and writes so clearly so that we can readily absorb his fine teaching. This book is a gift.' * Cornelius Plantinga, Author of Under the Wings of God *'Michael Williams masters technical Old Testament scholarship and makes it accessible to the ordinary layperson. He understands how Old Testament passages point to Christ and apply to believers today. His deeper meanings are neither allegorical nor idiosyncratic but highlight what the original authors intended with the words they chose. He reinforces his interpretations with memorable puns himself. This book could be used in the classroom or for devotions but will enjoyably inform many other readers as well. Countless thanks to Williams for these valuable insights!' * Craig L. Blomberg, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of New Testament, Denver Seminary *'Michael Williams writes a gem of a book showing how 'ordinary' Old Testament moments have more to teach us than we might suspect. He shines a light on thirty passages, taking a closer look at their contexts. Historical insights joined with close attention to the details of the text bring these passages to life in new ways. 30 Old Testament Passages is as engaging as it is accessible. I highly recommend it.' * Jeannine K. Brown, Bethel Seminary, Saint Paul, Minnesota *'My good friend and brother in Christ, and Associate Editor of the NIV Study Bible has produced a most interesting book, which I enthusiastically endorse. His approach sheds further light on the meaning of the Scripture passages he considers. In his approach he employs comparative literature, inclusios; commentaries' Hebrew grammar, syntax, and lexicography; etymologies; paranomasia; archaeology; ancient Near Eastern texts and contexts; and other literary and textual features. Much of the material in this book could be subsumed under the general rubric of Bible backgrounds. The author's goal is not to surface a meaning different from traditional understandings but a deeper meaning, thus what I call enhancing the meaning. It is my great pleasure to highly recommend this work of careful scholarship. The treatment of these selected passages is balanced, thorough and well reasoned. The author provides examples of how to enhance the semantic range of the texts he discusses. My heartfelt appreciation and congratulations go to Michael Williams.' * Kenneth L. Barker, General Editor, NIV Study Bible *'What does the Church and our World need more than ever? I would propose that the Church needs deeper discipleship from understanding the Bible and living in light of God's Word. Michael Williams is a gifted Bible scholar and teacher who has a passion for all believers to understand the faithfulness of God through all generations by seeing how even one verse in Scripture can help a person see the bigger picture of God's grace. Through short, but penetrating studies of 30 Old Testament texts, we are given a tour of the Old Testament to see the wider frame for understanding the scope of God's care for us. Beyond personal edification, the material is already set up through key questions at the end of each chapter to be the basis for preaching and teaching series as well as for small group studies. While original languages are referenced, Michael Williams with clarity and compassion makes sure that all readers gain confidence in trusting that the God who makes His promises known has kept those promises through all generations. Enjoy this journey!' * Jul Medenblik, President of Calvin Theological Seminary *

Book SynopsisIs God worthy of worship only because He blesses us? How should we respond to God when suffering comes into our lives? At the heart of the book of Job is a question about the character of God - and about how we should respond to Him. In this most recent title of the extensive Focus on the Bible series, Richard Belcher expertly deals with the difficult themes of this practical book, showing how it is still acutely applicable to the lives of believers.Trade ReviewThis very readable commentary combines scholarly insight with pastoral compassion as it addresses the question of how we should respond to God when suffering comes into our lives. Throughout the commentary, he shows how the message of the book of Job points to Christ the righteous sufferer. His summary statements are golden. -- Jim Newheiser (Director of the Christian Counseling Program and Associate Professor of Counseling and Practical Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte, North Carolina)Belcher takes a new direction amongst Job commentaries. He is no ivory tower academic, theorising about suffering, or playing with the book's theology. Weaving in the story of little baby Pierce, this is a scholarly and reliable commentary with a real human touch. -- Jared Hood (Old Testament Lecturer, Presbyterian Theological College, Melbourne)

Each chapter begins with Davis’ own translation of the Psalm from the Hebrew, before delving into his exposition. Peppered with sports anecdotes and references to military history, this book follows in the same vein as The Way of the Righteous in the Muck of Life: Psalms 1–12; Slogging Along in the Paths of Righteousness: Psalms 13–24; and In the Presence of my Enemies: Psalms 25–37. For those who enjoyed Davis’ previous works, this will not disappoint. For those who are unfamiliar with his writings, allow this book to direct your eyes to the God of the psalmist and find your exceeding joy in him.Trade ReviewAll of God’s Word is food for our souls and Dr. Davis is not afraid to give it to us. In ‘My Exceeding Joy’, this beloved expositor continues to show us in the Psalms how the Word is made fresh through the work and personality of an unashamed and approved workman. -- Brent Sadler (Army Chaplain, 7th Special Forces Group, Florida)This expository pilgrimage through the Psalms continues to delight, instruct, refresh and nourish our hearts. Above all else, Dr Davis’s own delight in God, evident on every page, leads us to his altar and displays his love and glory in ways that make us stop and pray and praise. -- David Gibson (Minister, Trinity Church, Aberdeen)Dale Ralph Davis belongs to the rarest tribe of commentators: clearly communicating biblical truth with simultaneous theological depth and engaging devotional impact. The genuine love for Yahweh which oozes from these pages—not overly demonstrative but irresistibly contagious—enables readers to share both that same love and the Exceeding Joy it produces. -- Mike Biggs (Senior Pastor, Christ the King Presbyterian Church, Norman, Oklahoma)

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Joel & Obadiah: Disaster And Deliverance

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisDisaster and Deliverance, these two words sum up something of the message of both Joel and Obadiah. In Joel, the prophet begins by announcing a disaster in terms of a locust invasion, which has affected Judah. This, however, is but the pretext for warning of an even greater disaster on the horizon for Judah. Nevertheless, the prophet holds out the prospect of deliverance. In the case of Obadiah, the focus is on Edom. Edom's pride and longstanding hostility against the people of God has led her to be party to an attack upon them, and as a result, she is threatened with disaster. The people of God, meanwhile, are assured of better things at the hand of the LORD.These two prophets and their message of disaster and deliverance will both challenge and reassure all who have ears to hear.Trade ReviewThis concise commentary is an accessible and lucid treatment of the books of Joel and Obadiah. Particularly helpful is Jones's appeal to the underlying Hebrew, cited in transliteration, especially when an important textual detail is not transparent in English translation. Also informative is the reference to other Old Testament texts and ancient Near Eastern culture for clarifying background. This commentary is a highly readable introduction to the books of Joel and Obadiah and accomplishes its purposes to explain the message of these books for popular audiences. It is especially suited for pastors, Bible study groups, or anyone who is interested in learning more about these compelling prophetic books and their relevance to readers today. -- Hannah Clardy, The Expository TimesIwan Rhys Jones' concise commentary is clear, well-grounded in careful attention to the text and also very readable. It will provide considerable help to those who want to get to grips with the message of these prophets, and will be welcomed by preachers conscious of the dearth of good material on both books. -- David McKay (Professor of Systematic Theology, Ethics and Apologetics, Reformed Theological College, Belfast, Northern Ireland)Writing in an accessible and succinct style, Jones introduces us to grand theological themes that run throughout the prophetic writing of Joel and Obadiah. His ear is attuned to the linguistic and literary features found in both books, and he explains them in a way that will benefit both the pastor and the layperson. As with many commentaries in this series, Jones's treatment is fitting for both sermon preparation and small group Bible study. -- Scott Redd (President and Associate Professor of Old Testament, Reformed Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C.)This commentary on Joel and Obadiah is very readable; it instantly engaged me with these sections of God's Word that I have never looked at in depth. The book clearly and carefully explains the context and meaning of each passage, and no knowledge of Hebrew is assumed. There are helpful little illustrations that fit well with the British context, as well as application questions at the end of each chapter, which arc also helpful and thought-provoking, prompting deeper engagement with the text. I enjoyed reading this commentary because the author takes time to stop and wonder at things we often take for granted. Overall I recommend this book without hesitation - it is worth adding to your shelf when preaching through Joel or Obadiah, or if you simply want to explore the message of these books further. -- Pete Killingly, Evangelicals NowSometimes it is difficult to understand the writings of the Old Testament, especially those writings that come from the minor prophets. It is sometimes even more difficult to see their relevance to people today. It is for this reason Rhys-Jones' work on Joel and Obadiah is such a welcome contribution. It provides meaningful material for historical background and theological interpretation along with a clear message of the application and relevance of these prophets to the 21st century church. -- T. J. Betts (Associate Professor of Old Testament Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky.)

Book SynopsisAn analysis of metaphor in the legal texts of the Old Testament using the tools of cognitive and cultural linguistics. The Old Testament is rich in metaphor. Metaphorical expressions appear not only in places where you might expect them, like the poetic verses, but also in the legal texts. They appear in the preambles to collections of laws, in their final summaries, in general considerations on compliance with and violation of the law, in texts concerning the meaning of the law, and those dealing with topics now reserved for legal theory and legal philosophy. These metaphorical expressions reveal how the authors of the relevant Torah/Law texts understood their function in society and what the society of the time preferred in the law. Anchored in cognitive and cultural linguistics, The Torah/Law Is a Journey investigates Hebrew metaphorical expressions concerning the key Old Testament concept of Torah/Law. Ivana Procházková identifies Hebrew conceptual metaphors and explicates the metaphorical expressions. She also uses cognitive linguistic analysis to look at modern translations of selected metaphorical expressions into Czech and English. Procházková closes with an analysis of the metaphors used in the Council of Europe publication Compass: Manual for Human Rights Education with Young People to conceptualize human rights.Trade Review"It is a benefit to those interested in the intersection between cognitive linguistics and biblical studies, and especially to those who are intrigued by 'the Torah/Law is a journey' metaphor." * The Catholic Biblical Quarterly *Table of ContentsIntroductionChapter 1.
