The History Press Ltd The Violence of Empire
Book SynopsisThe gruesome history of the Congo–Océan Railway, a forgotten chapter in the story of colonial AfricaTrade ReviewIf such a shockingly large number of people had been worked to death building a railroad in Europe or the United States, it would be as notorious as the worst deeds of Hitler or Stalin. J. P. Daughton puts this little-known tragedy on the record in a searing, unforgettable and necessary way’ -- Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold’s GhostMasterful ... What makes it so compelling is the divide it exposes between the intentions of colonial bureaucrats, some of whom genuinely seemed to think they were lifting Africans out of poverty, and the grim reality that they enabled. The application of “modern” government to conquered people could be almost as savage as plunder, Mr Daughton shows -- The EconomistMeticulously researched, vividly narrated and devastatingly compelling, The Violence of Empire provides a significant contribution to the mounting evidence that lays bare the self-deceiving lie at the heart of empire, that of the “civilising mission”. J. P. Daughton details the horrific abuse carried out by the colonial regime upon the African population during the construction of the Congo-Océan railroad, from forced labour to torture and murder, and finds evidence not just of African suffering but also African resistance’ -- Aminatta Forna, author of The Devil that Danced on the WaterDaughton tells this awful tale with great authority … As he so convincingly demonstrates, [the Congo-Océan’s] construction was a story of dreadful suffering that dragged on for many years and costs tens of thousands of African lives -- Barnaby Phillips, TLSIn this tour de force of historical research, J. P. Daughton tells the horrifying story of the Congo-Océan railroad, a massive, ill-conceived construction project whose French overseers doomed some 20,000 African workers to die. This story, revealing as it does France’s imperial hubris and callous disregard of human suffering, should have been told a long time ago. But it has been buried by bureaucrats, overlooked by historians and made invisible to those who chose not to see. We owe Daughton a great debt for bringing it to light and for masterfully adding a new chapter to the tragic history of Central Africa under European colonial rule -- Edward Berenson, author of The AccusationSailing with J. P. Daughton into the French empire’s heart of darkness is a visceral, haunting and memorable experience. The Violence of Empire will stand alongside Adam Hochschild’s King Leopold’s Ghost as a chilling testament to the crimes of European “civilisation” -- Marcus Rediker, author of The Slave Ship

Crecy Publishing The Blue Pullman Story Fully Revised and
Book SynopsisSince the original publication in 2005, a considerable amount of new material has been unearthed, both from official and private sources. This is all included in this revised and updated edition of the definitive history of these fascinating trains, which spans from their inception in the 1955 Modernisation Plan, through to their final demise in the scrap yards of South Wales two decades later. The development of the Blue Pullmans involved political and management decisions, the trials and tribulations of the actual design and the sometimes difficult involvement of outside design consultants, before their eventual entry into service on the London Midland and Western Regions. It was never a completely settled service. Staffing and labour relations issues, mechanical problems and an eventual concentration of all the sets on the Western Region put too many special trains in one place, whilst at the same time the Pullman brand and the willingness of the travelling public to pay supplementary

Fonthill Media Ltd BR Blue: Scenes from the British Rail Corporate
Book SynopsisThe British Rail corporate image and its Rail Blue livery was one of the longest-lived colour schemes carried by the trains of Britain in the forty-eight-year life of the nationalised railway network. Launched in 1965, after Beeching, the then new corporate image was an attempt by the BR design panel to raise the profile of the railway system countrywide and to sweep away the dull steam-era image as the swinging sixties got underway. By the mid-1970s, virtually all BR locomotives and multiple units were carrying Rail Blue livery, while most of the passenger coaches were in matching blue/grey. As the British Rail network was sectorised from the late 1980s in preparation for eventual privatisation, new bold, bright livery schemes for the fleet swept away the familiar, but by then somewhat jaded BR image. The BR blue era is now looked upon with affection as a golden age when the system was operated by an immense variety of locomotives and rolling stock, all now part of history in the same way that the steam era was viewed when the BR blue era ruled on Britain’s railways.Table of ContentsIntroduction; London Midland Region; Eastern Region; Southern Region; Western Region; Scottish Region; BR Blue Miscellany; Resurgence and Epilogue; Bibliography.

Crecy Publishing Scottish Railway Atlas Then and Now
Book SynopsisThis is the latest addition to our ever growing and highly successful portfolio of railway atlases. At its core is a set of maps contrasting, on opposite pages, the Scottish railway network in 1920 and the same areas today. This graphically illustrates how the system has contracted over the course of the last 100 years and allows comparison between these two eras to be easily made. However, there is so much more to this atlas than just the maps. For example, the Index of Stations has photographs of all those that are currently in use. For closed stations, each entry gives their OS Location, site status description and has a small map of the station. All stations in the Index have a chronology referring to the date of opening, closure dates for those no longer in use and any changes to their names that were made.Other sections of the Atlas contain information on British Railways Scottish Region Motive Power Depots with closure dates and locations, preserved railway lines, major structures on the network, signal boxes and a listing of the Scottish railways companies which became constituents of the LMS and the LNER. This excellent addition to our range of railway atlases will be very much welcomed by the many railway enthusiasts who have great interest in and affection for Scotland''s railways, their history and heritage.

Crecy Publishing British Rail Locomotives and Other Motive Power:
Book SynopsisA popular feature of our publishing programme for a number of years has been our fascimile reprints of selected titles from the famous Ian Allan Publishing abc series that first appeared in the 1940s. These modestly priced reprints are welcomed by both the enthusiasts who may have used them when they first came out and also by those not around at the time they were first published. They provide wonderful, nostalgic snapshots of a railway scene which has long since disappeared. The next reissue in the series - British Rail Locomotives and Other Motive Power: Combined Volume 1967. Two years before in 1965, there had been 3,000 steam locos on BR''s books. But such was the remorseless march of diesel and electric traction, by the end of 1967, this had shrunk to a mere 361; 307 of LMS origin, 2 ex LNER locos and only 52 out of the 999 BR Standard locos built. This is also the first of our abc reprints which uses the term ''British Rail'' in its title, that having been introduced in 1965. The focus of the 1967 abc Combined is therefore firmly on diesel and electric motive power with new locos being added all the time and almost all of the early Modernisation Plan types still in service. For generations of enthusiasts, these were the locos they grew up with and spotted so this volume will be one many can relate to more strongly than the rapidly fading age of steam.

Crecy Publishing Southern Way Special 19 Eastleigh Enginemen
Book SynopsisThe 2022 Southern Way Special Edition is the story of author Keith Dawe''s railway career which began in 1964 in the last years of Southern Region steam. Unlike many who joined the ranks of footplate crew, there was no railway tradition in his family. Keith was an academically bright student who gave up his schooling to follow the interest he always had in railways and the steam locomotive in particular. He joined the railway as a cleaner at Eastleigh shed when he was only 15, too young even to become a fireman. This memoir of those final years of steam at Eastleigh shed is packed with interesting and informative insights on those last years of SR steam, it is also an affectionate and well written recollection of a long gone era. Chapters deal with diverse topics, such as working both pick up goods trains and longer distance freight diagrams including the nightly services destined for Feltham yard in London. On the passenger side, among the topics covered are the workings through to Bournemouth and the boat trains which served Southampton Docks. The author also provides his personal assessment of the capabilities of many of the different steam classes on which he worked.Keith''s railway career was short lived as the steam railway he loved disappeared in 1967. He felt there was no future for him on the railway so in 1970 he left and returned to his studies. However, this memoir of his time at Eastleigh in those last years of steam is vivid and fascinating to read. All who are interested in SR steam and in that era of transition from steam to diesel and electric traction will thoroughly enjoy this latest Southern Way Special.

Crecy Publishing abc British Railways Locomotives Combined Volume
Book SynopsisA popular feature of our publishing programme for a number of years has been our facsimile reprints of selected titles from the famous Ian Allan Publishing abc series that first appeared in the 1940s. These modestly priced reprints are welcomed by both the enthusiasts who may have used them when they first came out and also by those not around at the time they were first published. They provide wonderful, nostalgic snapshots of a railway scene which has long since disappeared. The volume selected for reissue this Spring is abc British Railways Locomotives Combined Volume Summer 1959. This is in effect two books in one, abc British Railways Locomotives and the Locoshed Book. The abc lists all the locomotives which were in service at that time and the Locoshed book shows where those engines were allocated at the time the listings were compiled. The year covered in this volume is a particularly interesting one. By now, many of the new diesel classes conceived as a consequence of the BR modernisation plan of 1955, were coming into service though the steam locomotive was still supreme across most of the network, and indeed, new BR Standard steam locomotives were still under construction. As with all of these facsimile reprints, this volume provides a wonderful, nostalgic snapshot of a railway scene which has long since disappeared and will be enjoyed by enthusiasts of both steam and modern traction.

Sheldrake Press Logomotive: Railroad Graphics and the American
Book SynopsisIn Logomotive Ian Logan's photographs are assembled into chapters and picture essays recalling the great days of lines such as the Santa Fe, the Union Pacific, and the Kansas City Southern. Some of his journeys are presented as travelogues in which he meets the Fat Controller, gets to sound the horn, and wanders into freight yards to see the last generation of streamline locomotives rusting amid the weeds. Animal motifs, Native American allusions, advertising slogans, names of famous trains such as the Super Chief and the Wabash Cannonball provide the subject matter for other picture features.Trade ReviewIn these times, the commercial design agenda is generally set by things like automobiles, sneakers, and financial institutions. We see their logos, typographic trends, and color schemes everywhere—on billboards, atop stadiums, beaming at us from our flatscreens and smartphones. Decades ago, though, the public design space was largely the province of railroads, as shown in Logomotive: Railroad Graphics and the American Dream, a beautifully produced compendium of railroad design from Sheldrake Press, a London-based publisher. The authors are Ian Logan, a noted practitioner on the British and European design scene; and Jonathan Glancey, a veteran writer and correspondent who covers design and architecture. Award-winning British architect Norman Foster offers an eloquent and insightful Foreword. The authors bring a fresh and utterly British sense of surprise to a subject that, for readers of this magazine, is likely quite familiar. I got a kick out of Logan’s story about his first trip to the United States, in 1968, and his encounter with a famous name on the side of a boxcar. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing: the train was emblazoned with the name Rock Island. My uncle was the singer and songwriter Ewan MacColl, and I was brought up listening to folk, skiffle, and blues, so of course I knew Ronnie Donegan’s recording of the ‘Rock Island Line,’ but I hadn’t worked out that the Rock Island was a real, operational railroad.” The rest of the book chronicles similar revelations. Much of Logomotive is dedicated to exploring and showcasing the company logos and heralds that have enlivened the railroad scene since the late nineteenth century. You will see multiple iterations of all the classics—the Pennsylvania keystone, Santa Fe’s Warbonnet, MoPac’s buzzsaw, Seaboard’s red heart, B&O’s capitol silhouette—plus several obscure ones, accompanied by the authors’ sharp typographical and design analysis. One of the strengths of the book are the myriad visual contexts of the logos: on timetables and travel posters, along the flanks of diesels and freight cars and early streamliners, embedded into the walls and lintels of great stations, imprinted on matchbooks and ashtrays. It’s refreshing that not everything is presented in a pristine state. There is a poignancy to a weathered Western Pacific Feather River herald, riveted to the side of a tugboat funnel; or to an SP “Sunset” logo, struggling to be seen through the rust of an old freight car. As familiar as the subject might be, you can learn a lot from this book. I was fascinated by its take on designer Herbert Matter’s creation of the famous McGinnis-era New Haven logo, as well as Allan Fleming’s evolution of Canadian National’s superbly modernistic “CN,” first envisioned on a paper napkin. You’ll see the way New York Central’s oval transitioned from its early elegant serif font to the sans-serif sterility of the cigar band, or how Great Northern’s Rocky the mountain goat was updated. There were surprises, too, at least for me. I had never realized that the Cotton Belt logo of the 1880s derived from a cross-section of a cotton gin, and I was surprised to learn that design superstar Milton Glaser was responsible for Genesee & Wyoming’s versatile black-orange-yellow brand. The publisher has served its subject well, with a first-class horizontal treatment that includes sharp color printing, heavy paper, and a durable imprinted cover. Although the rather brief narrative is aimed at a general audience—some of the Brits’ observations are amusing, and a glossary at the end is as basic as can be—the book serves as an authoritative overview of the high tide of railroad design, written by professionals who really know their business. -- Kevin P. Crecy Publishing abc British Railways Locomotives 1954 Combined
Book SynopsisOur reprints of the famous Ian Allan Publishing abc series that ran from the 1940s through to the 1960s are always welcomed, not only by that generation of enthusiasts who used them when they first came out, but also by those who were not around at the time. They are wonderful, nostalgic snapshots of a railway scene which has long since disappeared. The latest addition to this series is that of the Combined Volume which was published in 1954. This was a very interesting period in the development of the BR steam locomotive fleet in the 1950s. There were many venerable pre-grouping classes still around and thousands of locomotives built or designed by the Big Four, but by 1954 all of the British Railways Standard classes were in production, including the unique Class 8 Pacific No 71000 Duke of Gloucester and the first of the 9Fs which entered service that year. This was a fascinating year and abc British Railway Locomotives Combined Volume 1954 is a very welcome addition to this series.

Crecy Publishing Edwardian Steam: A Locomotive Kaleidoscope
Book SynopsisOn the eve of WWI, there were 19,245 route miles of railway in Britain. Apart from some suburban electrification in a few major city areas, this vast network was worked entirely by steam locomotives. Each year several hundred locomotives were built while others were scrapped. The picture was therefore continually changing almost by the day, as between 1901 and 1914 a new build locomotive design or variant appeared somewhere, on average, at the rate of one every three weeks. The dramatic increase in the size of locomotives during this fairly short period was also unparalleled. It was goods rather than passenger traffic that earned most revenue for many railways. Railway engines consumed about 13 million tons of coal annually and as the pit head price of coal steadily increased, the railways sought ways to reduce their coal consumption and thereby maintain profitability, superheating being an important innovation in this respect at this time. This book closely examines all aspects of steam operations in this era, making use of largely overlooked published official statistics to present a detailed and fascinating picture of the time which has been described as the Golden Age of Britain''s railways

Crecy Publishing HST: The Train That Saved Britain's Railways
Book SynopsisIn 1976, the High Speed Train arrived on a British railway scene where trains were predominantly in three colours; blue and grey with a large patch of yellow at the front. On the new trains the yellow warning panel was now strikingly extended down the sides of the power cars, thus beginning a transformation both in terms of the trains themselves as well as in their liveries, from BR''s corporate years to the variety that we see today. HST The Train that Saved Britain''s Railways is a photographic tribute to a train widely credited with rescuing Britain''s railway system from further decline. Few items of rolling stock have stayed in front line service for so long, more than forty years, least of all on longer distance duties. The HST has achieved this whilst leading the move away from traditional patterns of operational practice utilising locomotives and coaches, towards one of fixed formations. This was something of a gamble and it has had its down sides, but is now accepted as the norm. The book focuses on the numerous liveries carried by the HST fleet, particularly since privatisation, rather than on their technical and operational achievements. This colourful celebration of these magnificent trains shows HSTs in action in a wide range of locations across the network from the lineside and at stations and depots. It is a celebration of a great British success story which will be relished by the legions of enthusiasts who admire them.

United Nations Trans-European railway high-speed: master plan
Book SynopsisThis publication is a continuation of the work undertaken in Phase 1, and extends its analysis to the following areas: Technical and legislative aspects, Socioeconomic analysis, Conditions for the establishment of national and international networks, and Financial and planning elements of HSR. The development of an HSR network in the TER region would significantly improve the competitiveness of rail, increasing the sustainability of the transport sectors in TER countries. Currently, there are few railway lines in some TER member States that allow high-speed operation. This creates a unique opportunity for developing HSR systems in individual TER member States while ensuring that this development is integrated across the wider TER region through adequate international connectivity. This study aims to provide decision-makers with the necessary tools to define what, if any, HSR networks should be developed in their respective states
