    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDr. Moshe Schein has previously compiled two books of surgical aphorisms and quotations the first book Aphorisms & Quotations for the Surgeon, with its 1500 quotations, and the slimmer A Companion to Aphorisms & Quotations for the Surgeon. Since their publication, both books have become steady bestsellers. Surgeons use the books to decorate their lectures or manuscripts with relevant smart or entertaining entries; some like to quote from the books during teaching rounds or conferences; many simply enjoy them for their collective and eternal surgical wisdom and wit. Now, as Moshe is drifting towards retirement, here is the last in the trilogy of this international bestselling series The Little Book of Aphorisms & Quotations for the Surgeon. The quotes collected within this little book have been gathered since the publication of the last two books in the series. As before, these aphorisms and quotations are retrieved from multiple sources: journals, books, lectures and, more and more, gathered from surgical friends around the world. The decision to include any entry is based on personal taste. Some would question the wisdom or accuracy of individual entries; others may not get the humor or may object to political incorrectness.

Profile Books Ltd Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe struggle to perform well is universal, but nowhere is this drive to do better more important than in medicine. In his new book, Atul Gawande explores how doctors strive to close the gap between best intentions and best performance in the face of obstacles that sometimes seem insurmountable. His vivid stories take us to battlefield surgical tents in Iraq, to a polio outbreak in India and to malpractice courtrooms around the country. He discusses the ethical dilemmas of doctors' participation in lethal injections, examines the influence of money on modern medicine and recounts the astoundingly contentious history of hand-washing. Finally, he gives a brutally honest insight into life as a practising surgeon. Unflinching but compassionate, Gawande's investigation into medical professionals and their progression from good to great provides a detailed blueprint for success that can be used by everyone.Trade ReviewI found I had been gripping the book so hard that my fingers hurt ... it calls to mind one of the great classics of medical literature, Mikhail Bulgakov's A Country Doctor's Notebook. Few modern authors can stand that comparison, but Gawande can. * Sunday Times *A fascinating study. * Irish Tatler *This wise and often profound book should be an inspiration to doctors all over the world * Sunday Times *His book is riveting: packed with insights, its luminous prose lifting effortlessly off the page ... It is essential reading for doctors and should be handed out with the antibiotics to all users of the NHS. It has already been described as a modern masterpiece - and so it is. * Independent *It seems unfair that a surgeon should be able to write so beautifully ... Better is perfect bedside reading - although it might keep you awake - for doctors as well as patients ... All will learn something of value from this infinitely wise and humane surgeon * Daily Mail *

Book SynopsisThe prevalence of obesity is increasing day-by-day and is the epidemic of the 21st century. In a recent analysis by WHO, it was found that 1.9 billion people aged 18 years or more were overweight, out of which 600 million were obese. The world obesity population has doubled over the last two decades. Obesity is associated with many diseases. Some of them are diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, asthma, degenerative bone disease, obstructive sleep apnea, which cause debilitating problems in the obese and add to the cost of health care. Increased body mass index (BMI), abdominal fat and weight gain are important risk factors associated with the development of type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). About 90% of people with T2DM are obese. Bariatric surgery is now a well-established procedure for treating morbid obesity and its associated comorbidities. Sleeve gastrectomy is becoming the most popular procedure to date owing to its technical simplicity and less malnutrition. This book reviews surgical techniques, clinical outcomes and potential complications of sleeve gastrectomy.

  • Handbook of Surgical Procedures

Nova Science Publishers Inc Handbook of Surgical Procedures

Book SynopsisIn this compilation, the authors begin with a focus on the indications for surgery in hepatocarcinoma and how to perform a liver resection. Long-term outcomes and different theories on the causes of recurrence after resection are also discussed. Most patients with hepatocarcinoma have underlying chronic liver disease and are thus at high risk for development of postoperative complications, which can sometimes be fatal. The authors propose that we may be able to prolong the overall survival of patients by using laparoscopic liver resection as a powerful local therapy, which can be applied repeatedly with minimal deterioration of liver function.Bronchoscopy has become an important procedure for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, particularly in the context of lung cancer. As such, the medical and surgical advances in bronchoscopy are described herein.Post-operative pancreatic fistula is one of the most dreaded complications in any pancreatic operation given its associated morbidity and mortality. This collection examines how the amylase-rich fluid can cause inflammation, become infected, or cause serious bleeding from neighboring vasculature. The authors go on to discuss cystic fibrosis, the most common life-threatening autosomal recessive disorder affecting Caucasians. The indications of endoscopic sinus surgery in cystic fibrosis patients are discussed, drawing from personal experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cystic fibrosis-related sinus disorders.Following this, the origins of functional sinus surgery as it relates to the evolution of functional endoscopic sinus surgery and minimally invasive sinus technique are discussed. The rationale for our departure from Messerklingers functional concepts is also analyzed.Additionally, endoscopic sinus surgery complications should be distinguished in minor and major based on the treatment they need and the permanent sequelae they can cause. Over the years, the incidence of complications in endoscopic surgery has gone from 8% for the major and 21% for the minor to a percentage of 0 -1.5% and 1.1 - 20.8%, respectively.Sphenoid sinus is very close to important and vulnerable structures of the skull base and therefore a delayed diagnosis and treatment can be lethal. Thus, the authors provide a review of classification of transsphenoidal skull base approaches and show the main transnasal corridors to the sphenoid sinus based on the anatomical sphenoidal target and extension of pathology.Lastly, a synopsis of the pathophysiology of post-craniotomy temporomandibular dysfunction and a practical approach to its evaluation and treatment is provided. Several surgical procedures can be used to perform craniotomy, such as the classical pterional, pre-temporal and other fronto-temporal approaches. However, they are all based on the dissection of the temporal muscle, which can lead to a variety of negative side effects.

Book SynopsisCancer surgery of the mouth and throat can involve major incision wounds, tracheotomy, or necessitate the breaking of bones. Recognizing the benefits and success of robotic surgery in other areas of medicine, the authors present its use in head and neck surgery, resulting in less surgery, less deformity, and faster rehabilitation. In this new book, the authors describe the preoperative aspects of Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS), including patient evaluation, instrumentation and set-up, moving on to diagnostic endoscopic and surgical techniques for tonsillectomy, laryngectomy, tongue base and glottic resection, and speech and swallowing considerations. They conclude with an examination of the potential for TORS in skull-base surgery, its future application and, importantly, telesurgery via the Internet. Book SynopsisEndoscopic techniques have revolutionized many surgical specialties and allowed the gradual development of new, minimally invasive procedures. Otology is no exception. The aim of Endoscopic Ear Surgery is to explore the role of endoscopy in the evolution of otologic surgery, and to introduce the surgeon to basic and advanced endoscopic ear surgery techniques. Rich with color images, the book also serves as an atlas of temporal bone anatomy and pathologic processes as seen through an ear endoscope. Key features include: Principles of endoscopic ear surgery Evolving concepts of middle ear physiology and ventilation routes Basic and advanced endoscopic ear surgery techniques Endoscopic lateral skull base surgery Endoscope-assisted office procedures Endoscopic Ear Surgery is primarily intended for otolaryngologists who perform ear surgery and would like to acquire or fine tune their endoscopic ear surgery skills. It is also helpful to otolaryngology residents during their otology block. This book is valuable to anyone performing ear procedures in the operating room or in the office.Trade Review"The art of this book is to (very convincingly) demonstrate applications and indications for endoscopic ear surgery and to consider future developments. ... The content is of course superbly illustrated and the layout does make "cherry picking" one's favourite topics easy. The description of the instrumentation and operating room set up I found thought provoking and, as a result, I detect the "Wind of Change" locally. ...Three chapters on CSOM will surely have the greatest relevance for our readers and there is excellent coverage of retraction pockets, sinus tympani cholesteatoma and the "Second Look" managed endoscopically. Later chapters range from "Office based" minor surgery to posterior fossa surgery. The latter is a lengthy chapter and the photography is superbly reproduced. ...This is an excellent book, tackling something a bit "different" and which should influence clinical practice." --Liam M Flood, FRCS, FRCSI, The Journal of Laryngology & Otology (2014)Table of ContentsForeword by John H. Book SynopsisTissue is frequently damaged or lost in injury and disease. There has been an increasing interest in stem cell applications and tissue engineering approaches in surgical practice to deal with damaged or lost tissue. Tissue engineering is an exciting strategy being explored to deal with damaged or lost tissue. It is the science of generating tissue using molecular and cellular techniques, combined with material engineering principles, to replace tissue. This could be in the form of cells with or without matrices. Although there have been developments in almost all surgical disciplines, the greatest advances are being made in orthopaedics, especially in cartilage repair. This is due to many factors including the familiarity with bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells and cartilage being a relatively simpler tissue to engineer. Unfortunately significant hurdles remain to be overcome in many areas before tissue engineering becomes more routinely used in clinical practice.

Book SynopsisSilicone prosthesis-based breast augmentation has shown year-on-year increases in popularity in both the USA and UK, but as surgical and implant technologies improve, adverse capsular contracture (ACC) has become a key determinant of outcome. ACC is the term given to the abnormal soft tissue reaction to a foreign body leading to constrictive fibrosis. Constrictive fibrosis refers to the poorly understood phenomenon by which the capsule that normally envelops an implant shrinks in size. The formation of a capsule around any foreign material entering the body is a normal response of the organism, which is not normally pathological in nature. This book discusses this adverse capsule and its role in breast augmentation.
