Profile Books Ltd Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe struggle to perform well is universal, but nowhere is this drive to do better more important than in medicine. In his new book, Atul Gawande explores how doctors strive to close the gap between best intentions and best performance in the face of obstacles that sometimes seem insurmountable. His vivid stories take us to battlefield surgical tents in Iraq, to a polio outbreak in India and to malpractice courtrooms around the country. He discusses the ethical dilemmas of doctors' participation in lethal injections, examines the influence of money on modern medicine and recounts the astoundingly contentious history of hand-washing. Finally, he gives a brutally honest insight into life as a practising surgeon. Unflinching but compassionate, Gawande's investigation into medical professionals and their progression from good to great provides a detailed blueprint for success that can be used by everyone.Trade ReviewI found I had been gripping the book so hard that my fingers hurt ... it calls to mind one of the great classics of medical literature, Mikhail Bulgakov's A Country Doctor's Notebook. Few modern authors can stand that comparison, but Gawande can. * Sunday Times *A fascinating study. * Irish Tatler *This wise and often profound book should be an inspiration to doctors all over the world * Sunday Times *His book is riveting: packed with insights, its luminous prose lifting effortlessly off the page ... It is essential reading for doctors and should be handed out with the antibiotics to all users of the NHS. It has already been described as a modern masterpiece - and so it is. * Independent *It seems unfair that a surgeon should be able to write so beautifully ... Better is perfect bedside reading - although it might keep you awake - for doctors as well as patients ... All will learn something of value from this infinitely wise and humane surgeon * Daily Mail *

  • Handbook of Surgical Procedures

Book SynopsisIn this compilation, the authors begin with a focus on the indications for surgery in hepatocarcinoma and how to perform a liver resection. Long-term outcomes and different theories on the causes of recurrence after resection are also discussed. Most patients with hepatocarcinoma have underlying chronic liver disease and are thus at high risk for development of postoperative complications, which can sometimes be fatal. The authors propose that we may be able to prolong the overall survival of patients by using laparoscopic liver resection as a powerful local therapy, which can be applied repeatedly with minimal deterioration of liver function.Bronchoscopy has become an important procedure for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, particularly in the context of lung cancer. As such, the medical and surgical advances in bronchoscopy are described herein.Post-operative pancreatic fistula is one of the most dreaded complications in any pancreatic operation given its associated morbidity and mortality. This collection examines how the amylase-rich fluid can cause inflammation, become infected, or cause serious bleeding from neighboring vasculature. The authors go on to discuss cystic fibrosis, the most common life-threatening autosomal recessive disorder affecting Caucasians. The indications of endoscopic sinus surgery in cystic fibrosis patients are discussed, drawing from personal experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cystic fibrosis-related sinus disorders.Following this, the origins of functional sinus surgery as it relates to the evolution of functional endoscopic sinus surgery and minimally invasive sinus technique are discussed. The rationale for our departure from Messerklingers functional concepts is also analyzed.Additionally, endoscopic sinus surgery complications should be distinguished in minor and major based on the treatment they need and the permanent sequelae they can cause. Over the years, the incidence of complications in endoscopic surgery has gone from 8% for the major and 21% for the minor to a percentage of 0 -1.5% and 1.1 - 20.8%, respectively.Sphenoid sinus is very close to important and vulnerable structures of the skull base and therefore a delayed diagnosis and treatment can be lethal. Thus, the authors provide a review of classification of transsphenoidal skull base approaches and show the main transnasal corridors to the sphenoid sinus based on the anatomical sphenoidal target and extension of pathology.Lastly, a synopsis of the pathophysiology of post-craniotomy temporomandibular dysfunction and a practical approach to its evaluation and treatment is provided. Several surgical procedures can be used to perform craniotomy, such as the classical pterional, pre-temporal and other fronto-temporal approaches. However, they are all based on the dissection of the temporal muscle, which can lead to a variety of negative side effects.

Book SynopsisThe thyroid gland is located in the neck deep to the platysma. This is a broad sheet of muscle that crosses over the clavicle to cover the antero-lateral neck. Its anterior fibres interlace with the opposite side, finding an attachment to the mandible and the dermis of the lower part of the face. The platymsa covers the sternocleidomastoid and the strap muscles of the neck: sternothyroid, sternohyoid and omohyoid. In order to maximize aesthetics after thyroidectomy, surgeons use a transverse collar incision through the skin and platysma. This book discusses the surgical procedures taken during a thyroidectomy, and also explores the potential complications involved. Postoperative outcomes are also discussed.

Book SynopsisThe first edition laid out the foundation with laparoscopic and robotic surgery utilizing the Da Vinci SI platform. Since then, many new advances in equipment and surgical techniques are becoming more popular. This second edition expands upon laparoscopic and endoscopic techniques and robotic surgery with the use of the new Da Vinci XI platform. This book bridges the gap between the practicing community of surgeons and the surgical innovators and provides a foundation for all classic and new techniques in minimally invasive colorectal surgery. By enhancing the surgical toolbox, the surgeon is able to progress from the novice to the master. Rather than describing the entire operative procedure by an individual author, this book compares operative steps of various technical difficulties throughout different chapters, thereby allowing the surgeon to tailor surgery to patient and surgeon`s own comfort level and experience. Chapters are written by a myriad of renowned experts in the field and discuss the major advances in advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic, robotic, and transanal minimally invasive surgical techniques. Great emphasis is placed on transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME), which is dramatically changing the surgical approach to rectal resections. The second edition of Advanced Techniques in Minimally Invasive and Robotic Colorectal Surgery serves as a valuable resource to general surgeons, colon and rectal surgeons, minimally invasive surgeons, as well as residents and fellows.Table of Contents
