Book SynopsisOne doctor’s surprising answer to the epidemic of chronic disease and essential reading for everyone concerned with the health of the next generation ..[T]he further we move away from nature the sicker we become, and it is our children who pay the heaviest price for what modern civilization is doing to our environment and our bodies. This book will make the reader think. I warmly recommend it! Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, author of Gut and Psychology Syndrome Over the past fifty years, rates of autoimmunity and chronic disease have exploded. While some attribute this rise to increased awareness and diagnosis, Thomas Cowan, MD, argues for a direct causal relationship to a corresponding increase in the number of vaccines children typically receive. Dr. Cowan looks at emerging evidence that certain childhood illnesses are actually protective of disease later in life; examines the role of fever, the gut and cellular fluid in immune health; argues that vaccination is an ineffective (and harmful) attempt to shortcut a complex immune response; and asserts that the medical establishment has engaged in an authoritarian argument that robs parents of informed consent. His ultimate question, from the point of view of a doctor who has decades of experience treating countless children is: What are we really doing to children when we vaccinate them? Dr. Cowan intelligently educates us on the complicated and beautiful workings of our immune system, clearly explains how and why its malfunction is harming us, and elucidates why our precious children are so vulnerable to these diseases. Lindy Woodard, MD, Pediatric AlternativesTrade Review“Dr. Tom Cowan has created an entertaining, compelling, and readily accessible book explaining the risks involved in today’s overaggressive vaccination campaign. I particularly appreciate his emphasis on the risks to autoimmune disease inherent in antibody induction through vaccines. This book is a great addition to the growing body of literature revealing why vaccination is not the best strategy for protection against infectious diseases.”—Stephanie Seneff, senior research scientist, MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory“I would like to thank Dr. Tom Cowan for writing this book! Humanity seems to have forgotten that human body is part of nature; the further we move away from nature the sicker we become, and it is our children who pay the heaviest price for what modern civilization is doing to our environment and our bodies. This book will make the reader think. I warmly recommend it!”—Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, author of Gut and Psychology Syndrome“Dr. Cowan does a great job explaining in clear and common-sense terms that the practice and the rationale of vaccination is deeply flawed, and, astoundingly, is not evidence-based but rather fear-based. The vaccine paradigm is upheld by the consensus, but the consensus in not based on a free and unbiased reading of all the evidence, rather only on a small part of it, while much is ignored. Dr. Cowan contributes greatly to a much-needed correction of this misleading and misled consensus.”—Philip Incao, MD, advisor, Physicians for Informed Consent“Tom Cowan’s Vaccines, Autoimmunity, and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness is both brilliant and beautifully simple. He shares facts not taught in medical school, that reflect ancient wisdom, common sense, and trust in the intelligence of life itself. Understanding the role of childhood illnesses such as chickenpox and measles is critical to our survival as a species. Tom does an outstanding job of connecting the dots and giving reason to what is often misunderstood!”—Cilla Whatcott, producer of the film Real Immunity; author of There is a Choice“As a pediatrician for thirty-five years, I have seen the enormous rise in autoimmune diseases like asthma, allergies, eczema, and autism. We no longer need to scratch our heads wondering why, because the reasons are clear. In Vaccines, Autoimmunity, and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness, Dr. Cowan intelligently educates us on the complicated and beautiful workings of our immune system, clearly explains how and why its malfunction is harming us, and elucidates why our precious children are so vulnerable to these diseases. Most importantly, perhaps, Dr. Cowan charts the clear, concise path to healing, offering a better, healthier life for us, our children, and the planet.”—Lindy Woodard, MD, Pediatric Alternatives“We westerners must wake up to the fact that vaccination is driving our modern epidemics of autism, dementia, autoimmunity, and allergies. In Vaccines, Autoimmunity, and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness, Dr. Thomas Cowan whistle-blows on Big Pharma and the medical profession. Quite rightly, too. Human misery aside, these diseases are debilitatingly expensive. Autism usually results in care for life. “The arguments Dr. Cowan makes are not only biologically plausible, but are based in good science. He states what, for many, is the obvious: we must learn to live within the laws of nature, not fight against them as if they were some evil force. Evolution has the answers! We have lived with microorganisms for millions of years, and many confer significant survival benefits. Cowan details this with devastating logic. Childhood infections such as chickenpox and measles are desirable; they program the immune system in such a way as to protect us from disease later in life. “This book gives parents the intellectual ammunition they need to fight back against the pro-vaccine medical establishment. They clearly need such. I have seen parents driven by fear into vaccinating their children entirely against their parental instincts. By not vaccinating, Cowan shows us how children can be protected from allergy, autoimmunity, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, asthma, and autism. This book is essential reading for all concerned with the health of the next generation.”—Dr. Sarah Myhill, author of Sustainable Medicine and Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalitis“Thomas Cowan, MD, is a gifted physician and scientist. He is also a man of integrity who sticks his neck out for the truth. In addition he has the talent for making complex and urgent topics easy to read and understand for the intelligent layperson. He has accomplished this with his book, Human Heart, Cosmic Heart, the best book out there on holistically healing cardiovascular diseases. Now he has done it again with Vaccines, Autoimmunity, and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness. “Vaccination has been a controversial topic for decades with informed parents around the world having to struggle with regulatory authorities and doctors over the necessity and effectiveness of vaccination to prevent childhood diseases. Now Dr. Cowan comes out with a powerful book giving a clear scientific voice to the intuition of many parents regarding the dangers of vaccination. Tamper with our immune system through one-sided interventions, and pay a tragic price. “This book is a global wake-up call to defend, against those who would destroy it, the awesome wisdom of the human body to wage its own battle against the myriad diseases that seek to overcome our internal defense system. This book will have a profound, beneficial impact on human health around the world in the years and decades to come. It is a courageous and pioneering work worthy of admiration and support.”—Nicanor Perlas, recipient, Right Livelihood Award

Cambridge University Press Computer Age Statistical Inference Algorithms
Book SynopsisComputing power has revolutionized the theory and practice of statistical inference. This book delivers a concentrated course in modern statistical thinking by tracking the revolution from classical theories to the large-scale prediction algorithms of today. Anyone who applies statistical methods to data will benefit from this landmark text.Trade Review'How and why is computational statistics taking over the world? In this serious work of synthesis that is also fun to read, Efron and Hastie, two pioneers in the integration of parametric and nonparametric statistical ideas, give their take on the unreasonable effectiveness of statistics and machine learning in the context of a series of clear, historically informed examples.' Andrew Gelman, Columbia University, New York'This unusual book describes the nature of statistics by displaying multiple examples of the way the field has evolved over the past sixty years, as it has adapted to the rapid increase in available computing power. The authors' perspective is summarized nicely when they say, 'very roughly speaking, algorithms are what statisticians do, while inference says why they do them'. The book explains this 'why'; that is, it explains the purpose and progress of statistical research through a close look at many major methods, methods the authors themselves have advanced and studied at great length. Both enjoyable and enlightening, Computer Age Statistical Inference is written especially for those who want to hear the big ideas, and see them instantiated through the essential mathematics that defines statistical analysis. It makes a great supplement to the traditional curricula for beginning graduate students.' Rob Kass, Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania'This is a terrific book. It gives a clear, accessible, and entertaining account of the interplay between theory and methodological development that has driven statistics in the computer age. The authors succeed brilliantly in locating contemporary algorithmic methodologies for analysis of 'big data' within the framework of established statistical theory.' Alastair Young, Imperial College London'This is a guided tour of modern statistics that emphasizes the conceptual and computational advances of the last century. Authored by two masters of the field, it offers just the right mix of mathematical analysis and insightful commentary.' Hal Varian, Google'Efron and Hastie guide us through the maze of breakthrough statistical methodologies following the computing evolution: why they were developed, their properties, and how they are used. Highlighting their origins, the book helps us understand each method's roles in inference and/or prediction. The inference-prediction distinction maintained throughout the book is a welcome and important novelty in the landscape of statistics books.' Galit Shmueli, National Tsing Hua University'A masterful guide to how the inferential bases of classical statistics can provide a principled disciplinary frame for the data science of the twenty-first century.' Stephen Stigler, University of Chicago, and author of Seven Pillars of Statistical Wisdom'Computer Age Statistical Inference offers a refreshing view of modern statistics. Algorithmics are put on equal footing with intuition, properties, and the abstract arguments behind them. The methods covered are indispensable to practicing statistical analysts in today's big data and big computing landscape.' Robert Gramacy, University of Chicago Booth School of Business'Every aspiring data scientist should carefully study this book, use it as a reference, and carry it with them everywhere. The presentation through the two-and-a-half-century history of statistical inference provides insight into the development of the discipline, putting data science in its historical place.' Mark Girolami, Imperial College London'Efron and Hastie are two immensely talented and accomplished scholars who have managed to brilliantly weave the fiber of 250 years of statistical inference into the more recent historical mechanization of computing. This book provides the reader with a mid-level overview of the last 60-some years by detailing the nuances of a statistical community that, historically, has been self-segregated into camps of Bayes, frequentist, and Fisher yet in more recent years has been unified by advances in computing. What is left to be explored is the emergence of, and role that, big data theory will have in bridging the gap between data science and statistical methodology. Whatever the outcome, the authors provide a vision of high-speed computing having tremendous potential to enable the contributions of statistical inference toward methodologies that address both global and societal issues.' Rebecca Doerge, Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania'In this book, two masters of modern statistics give an insightful tour of the intertwined worlds of statistics and computation. Through a series of important topics, Efron and Hastie illuminate how modern methods for predicting and understanding data are rooted in both statistical and computational thinking. They show how the rise of computational power has transformed traditional methods and questions, and how it has pointed us to new ways of thinking about statistics.' David Blei, Columbia University, New York'Absolutely brilliant. This beautifully written compendium reviews many big statistical ideas, including the authors' own. A must for anyone engaged creatively in statistics and the data sciences, for repeated use. Efron and Hastie demonstrate the ever-growing power of statistical reasoning, past, present, and future.' Carl Morris, Harvard University, Massachusetts'Computer Age Statistical Inference gives a lucid guide to modern statistical inference for estimation, hypothesis testing, and prediction. The book seamlessly integrates statistical thinking with computational thinking, while covering a broad range of powerful algorithms for learning from data. It is extraordinarily rare and valuable to have such a unified treatment of classical (and classic) statistical ideas and recent 'big data' and machine learning ideas. Accessible real-world examples and insightful remarks can be found throughout the book.' Joseph K. Blitzstein, Harvard University, Massachusetts'Among other things, it is an attempt to characterize the current state of statistics by identifying important tools in the context of their historical development. It also offers an enlightening series of illustrations of the interplay between computation and inference … This is an attractive book that invites browsing by anyone interested in statistics and its future directions.' Bill Satzer, Mathematical Association of America Reviews'My take on Computer Age Statistical Inference is that experienced statisticians will find it helpful to have such a compact summary of twentieth-century statistics, even if they occasionally disagree with the book's emphasis; students beginning the study of statistics will value the book as a guide to statistical inference that may offset the dangerously mind-numbing experience offered by most introductory statistics textbooks; and the rest of us non-experts interested in the details will enjoy hundreds of hours of pleasurable reading.' Joseph Rickert, RStudio (www.rstudio.com)'Efron and Hastie (both, Stanford Univ.) have superbly crafted a central text/reference book that presents a broad overview of modern statistics. The work examines major developments in computation from the late-20th and early-21st centuries, ranging from electronic computations to 'big data' analysis. Focusing primarily on the last six decades, the text thoroughly documents the progression within the discipline of statistics … This text is highly recommended for graduate libraries.' D. J. Oxford University Press Inc Pandemics
Book SynopsisThe 2014 Ebola epidemic demonstrated the power of pandemics and their ability not only to destroy lives locally but also to capture the imagination and terrify the world. Christian W. McMillen provides a concise yet comprehensive account of pandemics throughout human history, illustrating how pandemic disease has shaped history and, at the same time, social behavior has influenced pandemic disease. Extremely interesting from a medical standpoint, the study of pandemics also provides unexpected, broader insights into culture and politics. This Very Short Introduction describes history''s major pandemics - plague, tuberculosis, malaria, smallpox, cholera, influenza, and HIV/AIDS - highlighting how each disease''s biological characteristics affected its pandemic development. McMillen discusses state responses to pandemics, such as quarantine, isolation, travel restrictions, and other forms of social control, and pays special attention to the rise of public health and the explosion of medical research in the wake of pandemics, especially as the germ theory of disease emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Today, medicine is able to control all of these diseases, yet some of them are still devastating in much of the developing world. By assessing the relationship between poverty and disease and the geography of epidemics, McMillen offers an outspoken and thought-provoking point of view on the necessity for global governments to learn from past experiences and proactively cooperate to prevent any future epidemic.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1: Plague Chapter 2: Smallpox Chapter 3: Malaria Chapter 4: Cholera Chapter 5: Tuberculosis Chapter 6: Influenza Chapter 7: HIV/AIDS References Further Reading Index

Steven Johnson is one of today''s most exciting writers about popular culture, urban living and new technology. In The Ghost Map he tells the story of the terrifying cholera epidemic that engulfed London in 1854, and the two unlikely heroes - anesthetist Doctor John Snow and affable clergyman Reverend Henry Whitehead - who defeated the disease through a combination of local knowledge, scientific research and map-making. In telling their extraordinary story, Steven Johnson also explores a whole world of ideas and connections, from urban terror to microbes, ecosystems to the Great Stink, cultural phenomena to street life. Cambridge University Press Statistical Hypothesis Testing in Context Volume
Book SynopsisFay and Brittain present statistical hypothesis testing and compatible confidence intervals, focusing on application and proper interpretation. The emphasis is on equipping applied statisticians with enough tools - and advice on choosing among them - to find reasonable methods for almost any problem and enough theory to tackle new problems by modifying existing methods. After covering the basic mathematical theory and scientific principles, tests and confidence intervals are developed for specific types of data. Essential methods for applications are covered, such as general procedures for creating tests (e.g., likelihood ratio, bootstrap, permutation, testing from models), adjustments for multiple testing, clustering, stratification, causality, censoring, missing data, group sequential tests, and non-inferiority tests. New methods developed by the authors are included throughout, such as melded confidence intervals for comparing two samples and confidence intervals associated with WilTrade Review'A necessary book for the applied statistician seeking to understand the theoretical underpinnings of statistical methods and for graduate students knowledgeable about statistical theory but lacking experience in application. The book is chock full of challenging examples that point to the complexities of choice of method. A particularly valuable feature of the book is the authors' description of competing methods coupled with their clarity in explaining and justifying why they prefer one method over others. Fay and Brittain should sit on every statistician's bookshelf.' Janet Wittes, WCG Statistics Collaborative'Good statistical hypothesis testing and confidence interval construction involves mathematical aspects of finding a good test given a probability model and scientific aspects of determining the appropriateness of a probability model for answering a scientific question. This book provides a lucid discussion of both these mathematical and scientific aspects with compelling scientific examples. I most highly recommend this book.' Dylan Small, University of Pennsylvania'Congratulations to Fay and Brittain for this wonderful reference book that does what its somewhat unusual title suggests: puts hypothesis testing in the context of science. The vast coverage of topics, extensive bibliography and notes, and easy to understand explanations make 'Statistical Hypothesis Testing in Context: Reproducibility, Inference, and Science' an indispensable tool in the arsenal of any applied or theoretical statistician or biostatistician. I enthusiastically recommend buying the book!' Michael A. Proschan, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious DiseasesTable of Contents1. Introduction; 2. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Getting to Zero: A Doctor and a Diplomat on the
Book SynopsisIn 2014, a 28-year old British doctor found himself co-running the Ebola isolation unit in Sierra Leone’s main hospital after the doctor in charge had been killed by the virus. Completely overwhelmed and wrapped in stifling protective suits, he and his team took it in turns to provide care to patients while removing dead bodies from the ward. Against all odds he battled to keep the hospital open, as the queue of sick and dying patients grew every day. Only a few miles down the road the Irish Ambassador and Head of Irish Aid worked relentlessly to rapidly scale up the international response. At a time when entire districts had been quarantined, she travelled around the country, and met with UN agencies, the President and senior ministers so as to be better placed in alerting the world to the catastrophe unfolding in front of her. In this blow-by-blow account, Walsh and Johnson expose the often shocking shortcomings of the humanitarian response to the outbreak, both locally and internationally, and call our attention to the immense courage of those who put their lives on the line every day to contain the disease. Theirs is the definitive account of the fight against an epidemic that shook the world.Trade ReviewGetting to Zero is a compelling read, full of compassion, grief, ingenuity and stories of courage and unstinting commitment of local nurses, cleaners and others who remain unsung heroes of Ebola. But it is also full of tales of denial, extraordinary lapses in leadership and awkward truths that will make uncomfortable reading for many, locally and internationally. * Guardian *Written in an honest and engaging tone, their experience behind the scenes of the outbreak is illuminating and highlights important lessons for the management of future outbreaks, and the operational errors that increased the number of lives lost in the west African outbreak of 2014–16. * Lancet *Hundreds of reports have been written on the 2014 epidemic – the most widespread Ebola outbreak since the virus was discovered – but none is nearly as insightful, compassionate or unsparing as this. * Irish Times *A brave, bold, yet humble account from the frontlines of the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone. This is vital reading to help us all do better next time. * David Miliband, President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee *Courage in extreme clinical danger, courage to challenge obstructive bureaucracy, courage to make tough decisions and the courage to endure. This is the courage that Sinead Walsh and Oliver Johnson displayed in Sierra Leone. Their compelling book is essential reading for all who care about global health. * Eldryd Parry, founder of the Tropical Health and Education Trust *A captivating and brutally honest account of the Ebola epidemic from two brave, committed individuals who unexpectedly found themselves at its epicentre. The authors pull no punches, and leave us asking: will these lessons be learned, or will the world once again forget and move on? * Jeremy Farrar, Director of the Wellcome Trust *This powerful book asks important questions about aid and development and offers insights that everyone working in global health should absorb – as well as being a personal and very moving account of an epidemic that killed thousands. * Lord Nigel Crisp, Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Global Health *Walsh and Johnson represent the best of international intervention. This book reveals the complexities and level of cooperation that made “getting to zero” possible. Offers excellent insight into those trying times. * O.B. Sisay, Director of the Situation Room at the National Ebola Response Centre, Sierra Leone *An extraordinary account from the thick of the battle against Ebola. This is history’s first draft, and a powerful example of persistent and pragmatic leadership. Mandatory reading for anyone concerned with global health in the broadest sense. * Paul Farmer, Harvard Medical School, and co-founder of Partners in Health *Takes us behind the scenes to the harrowing frontlines of the Ebola epidemic – highlighting a set of lessons that an inter-connected world would ignore at our peril. A compelling read. * Samantha Power, former US Ambassador to the UN *A detailed, up-close-and-personal perspective on the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone, important for all who want to understand what it is to confront a terrible health threat. * Tom Frieden, President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives, and former Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention *Johnson and Walsh provide a frank, beautifully written, and essential guide to the lessons learned from the heart of the outbreak. Their first-hand experiences in battling this terrible disease will take your breath away. A must read. * Tulip Mazumdar, Global Health Correspondent for BBC News *Table of ContentsMaps Preface 1. For more than 40 years, the PRECEDE-PROCEED model, developed in the early 1970s by Lawrence W. Green and first published as a text in 1980 with Marshall W. Kreuter, Sigrid G. Deeds, and Kay B. Partridge, has been effectively applied worldwide to address a broad range of health issues: risk factors like tobacco and lack of exercise, social determinants of health such as lack of access to transportation and safe housing, and major disease challenges like heart disease and guinea worm disease. In Health Program Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation, Green and his team of senior editors and chapter authors combine their expertise to offer a high-level guide to public health programming. This guide aligns with foundational public health competencies required by increasingly rigorous certification and accreditation standards. Oxford University Press Inc The Triumph of Doubt
Book SynopsisOpioids. Concussions. Obesity. Climate change. America is a country of everyday crises -- big, long-spanning problems that persist, mostly unregulated, despite their toll on the country''s health and vitality. And for every case of government inaction on one of these issues, there is a set of familiar, doubtful refrains: The science is unclear. The data is inconclusive. Regulation is unjustified. It''s a slippery slope. Is it?The Triumph of Doubt traces the ascendance of science-for-hire in American life and government, from its origins in the tobacco industry in the 1950s to its current manifestations across government, public policy, and even professional sports. Well-heeled American corporations have long had a financial stake in undermining scientific consensus and manufacturing uncertainty; in The Triumph of Doubt, former Obama and Clinton official David Michaels details how bad science becomes public policy -- and where it''s happening today. Amid fraught conversations of alternative facts and truth decay, The Triumph of Doubt wields its unprecedented access to shine a light on the machinations and scope of manipulated science in American society. It is an urgent, revelatory work, one that promises to reorient conversations around science and the public good for the foreseeable future.Trade Review[Michaels] documents not only a shocking disregard for human welfare on the part of big business, but also a co-ordinated effort to compromise the culture of knowledge itself. * Times Literary Supplement *...chock full of good examples that were clearly researched (averaging over 30 references per chapter) and supplemented with Michaels' personal experiences. In 2020, that crisis came to pass, with the outcomes more devastating and consequential than anyone dared to imagine. Oxford University Press The Struggle for Health
Book SynopsisThe first edition of The Struggle for Health was published in 1985 and was widely acclaimed by those seeking a broader and deeper political understanding of ill health, beyond the medical model of care. It was a revolutionary book, charting new ways of understanding and tackling the causes of ill health, and suggesting strategies to enable health for all. This second edition includes health problems that have emerged since the 1980s, notably HIV/AIDs, COVID-19, and other epidemics, and the increase in non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It examines some of the health impacts of globalization, specifically on the food and pharmaceutical value chains, and considers the consequences of climate change on the health of populations. However, this edition does not depart from the core message of the original book: Health for All can only be achieved through a more equitable distribution of wealth, resources, and power. The Struggle for Health, Second EditioTrade ReviewThis book presents an accessible, comprehensive, and revealing analysis of the political economy of health. It provides a much-needed discussion of the alternatives to the pure capitalist approach to achieving equity in health outcomes. It provides hopeful solutions for the provision of comprehensive primary health care based on local needs. * Doody's Book Review *For years, attendees at global health conferences saw Sanders rise to ask, politely, pointed questions that many felt unable to ask. How had technology and metrics gained such prominence while engagement with communities and their local conditions and priorities were too often discounted? Sanders is now gone. But in this book, and in the work of People's Health Movement to which he devoted his final years, can be found the critical analyses, courage, and facts needed to stand up and speak truth to power. * Mary T Bassett, The Perspectives *Table of Contents1: Snapshots of (ill)health around the world 2: Global disease patterns 3: Health, population and inequality 4: The medical contribution 5: Health policies and health care in the context of neoliberal globalization 6: The commercialization of health care: Medicine, business and the state 7: Changing medicine, changing society

Oxford University Press Steering Against Superbugs The Global Governance
Book SynopsisAMR is arguably one of the most severe long-term threats to human, animal, and environmental health. There is momentum for global political action around novel and emerging disease threats and Steering Against Superbugs contributes with original and insightful research to inform ongoing and future debates.Trade ReviewThis volume collects together key insights from across social sciences on AMR governance. AMR is now the third-leading underlying cause of death globally, which is why a global approach and global governance is necessary. Through a global perspective, the case studies in this volume highlight both successes and challenges of local, regional, and global governance for AMR. As we work together across the world to tackle the 'silent' AMR pandemic, I strongly recommend this book for all in the global and public health and policy sphere to help galvanise action to address the insidious and complex health emergency of AMR. * Professor Dame Sally Davies, UK Special Envoy on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) *Steering Against Superbugs comprehensively unpacks the root social drivers of antimicrobial resistance and masterfully situates these drivers in their cultural, historical and political contexts. Rubin, Baekkeskov, and Munkholm have brought together some of the world's leading thinkers in this field and have pro¬vided us with some of the best ideas yet to tackle this intensifying global health challenge that already kills more than 1.2 million people each year. * Professor Steven J. Hoffman, Director of the Global Strategy Lab and the WHO Collaborating Centre on Global Governance of Antimicrobial Resistance, York University, Canada *This exciting volume achieves what many have been waiting for: a compen¬dium of social science approaches to antimicrobial resistance. With a focus on governance, the authors demonstrate the strengths of different disciplines by providing evidence at multiple scales of the ways in which antibiotics, and drug resistance, is-and can be-governed. From clinics, to bednets, to global policy spaces, the book introduces the reader to detailed case studies that enlighten and awaken interest in the multiple dimensions that make up the complex challenge of antimicrobial resistance globally. * Professor Clare Chandler, Anthropology of Antimicrobial Resistance lead and founding Director, AMR Centre, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. *Microbes, humans, One Health, and the interplay between them through AMR. This book introduces the reader to the conceptual issues of AMR, and then steers her through governance challenges, One Health aspects, global awareness, advocacy and regulatory matters. This is essential reading, not just for those working in this critical field but also for policy- makers, healthcare leaders, One Health professionals, and the wider community-providing an armament of knowledge, insight, and perspectives in the fight against AMR. * Professor & Head Sujith J Chandy, Department of Pharmacology & Clinical Pharmacology, Christian Medical College Vellore, India *Table of Contents1: Steering against Superbugs: Research agenda and four perspectives for global governance Part I: Framing and conceptualizing AMR 2: Pills and Politics - a historical analysis of international antibiotic regulation since 1945 3: Global eradicationism and AMR 4: Conceptualizing AMR as a creeping disaster in terms of pace and space Part II: Coordination and leadership in AMR governance 5: Combatting AMR in the EU - governmental dimensions 6: Contested governance of collective action against AMR in the EU 7: What would it take to move the global AMR agenda forward in the Global South? Oxford University Press, USA Epidemiologic Methods in Physical Activity Studies
Book SynopsisPhysical activity clearly is associated with decreased risk of many chronic diseases, as well as with longer life. Utilizing modern epidemiologic methods, studies of physical activity and health have been conducted since the 1940s. However physical inactivity did not gain widespread acknowledgement as a major risk factor for poor health until 1992, when the American Heart Association recognized it as a risk factor for heart disease, on par with risk factors such as smoking. This text includes chapters describing the associations between physical activity and major diseases. With a major emphasis on the methods underpinning studies that can be conducted to elucidate these associations, this book is an important guide for those performing the informative epidemiologic studies needed to reduce the increasing number of people diagnosed with chronic disease due to inactivity.Trade ReviewA thorough and thought-provoking overview of the rapidly evolving field of physical activity and inactivity measurement and of data analytic techniques... an excellent companion for physical activity researchers and students alike. * American Journal of Epidemiology *Table of ContentsCONTENTS; CONTRIBUTORS; EPIDEMIOLOGIC METHODS, I-MIN LEE, RALPH S. Oxford University Press Inc The Triumph of Doubt Dark Money and the Science
Book SynopsisWell-heeled American corporations have long had a financial stake in undermining scientific consensus and manufacturing uncertainty. In The Triumph of Doubt, former Obama and Clinton official David Michaels details how corrupt science becomes public policy -- and where it''s happening today. Opioids. Concussions. Obesity. Climate Change.America is a country of everyday crises -- big, long-spanning problems that persist despite their toll on the country''s health. And for every case of government inaction on one of these issues, there is a set of familiar, doubtful refrains: The science is unclear. The data are inconclusive. Regulation is unjustified. It''s a slippery slope. Is it?The Triumph of Doubt traces the ascendance of science-for-hire in American life and government, from its origins in the tobacco industry in the 1950s to its current manifestations across government, public policy, and even professional sports. I think any scientist who wants to bridge the realm of research, policy, politics and ethics would benefit from reading this book. * JULIE POLLOCK, Chemistry World *It is so refreshing to read David Michaels' The Triumph of Doubt. He has the facts researched, vetted and thoroughly cited, and is not afraid to lay blame, call people liars and companies frauds. * San Francisco Review of Books *David Michaels opens our eyes to the methods corporations employ that bend the facts of science in order to make a profit. * Chemistry World *David Michaels is that rare combination: the fearless expert. He not only knows where the bodies are buried, he knows who buried them. The Triumph of Doubt and its predecessor, Doubt Is Their Product, are timely, readable, and essential guides for anyone seeking to understand how the corruption of science is damaging the health of everyone from football players and factory workers to soda drinkers and truck drivers-in short, anyone with a pulse. * Dan Fagin, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Toms River *David Michaels lays bare the dark money and the corporate science racket that kept the lethalities of tobacco, asbestos, lead, silica, pesticides, and scores of other life- and health-destroying products on the market and in the workplace, escaping the reach of the law. He names names of people and companies fronted by their so-called 'product defense' business and its corporate attorney enablers; delays, obfuscation, falsehood, and retaliation against ethical whistleblowers are the coins of their insidious realms. This book is written to get you angry enough to want to learn how to defend yourselves, your communities, and our vulnerable planet. Let it grip you toward detection and defiance." * Ralph Nader *As a society, it's vital we properly debate issues using data and research. The Triumph of Doubt, David Michaels's wonderfully deep dive into the well-funded war on scientific consensus and certainty, makes the stakes clear: our planet. Read this." * Adam Savage, Mythbusters *No one has done more to expose the deep corruption in American safety regulation that harms us all-and especially our kids. After spending seven years as America's chief safety regulator, David Michaels offers a beautifully crafted argument for how much more we need to do. Required-if frightening-reading for anyone who cares about a clean and safe environment for America and the world." * Lawrence Lessig, author of Fidelity and Constraint *A page-turner-one you'll wish was fiction. From hired guns to dark money, The Triumph of Doubt unravels corporations' playbook for deceiving the public through misinformation.^ * Mona Hanna-Attisha, author of What the Eyes Don't See *The Triumph of Doubt is an industry-by-industry account of how corporations manipulate science and scientists to promote profits, not public health. Nothing less than democracy is at stake here, and we all should be responding right away to David Michaels' call for action. * Marion Nestle, author of Unsavory Truth *It takes real courage to speak out against entrenched corporate interests and big industry. I saw that courage firsthand when I worked alongside Dr. Michaels in the Obama administration to protect workers at construction sites from cancer-causing silica dust. The Triumph of Doubt doesn't just tell the story of how we overcame the falsehoods of industry-funded studies, it shines a disinfecting light on the ways corporations obscure the truth and downplay risk to pump up their bottom line. This is a must-read." * Tom Perez, former U.S. Labor Secretary *A compelling and necessary work for anyone interested in the truth and those who seek to bury it. Michaels details the methods used by those in power to hide the truth-and the moral bankruptcy at work when they do so." * Demaurice Smith, National Football League Players Association Executive Director *As a third-generation coal miner from a family who has suffered the deadly consequences of Black Lung, I know firsthand that worker safety should never be politicized. David Michaels's book is a must-read for business, labor and the scientific community." * Richard Trumka, AFL-CIO President *David Michaels provides well-written evidence in his book about how corporations that produce dangerous products-tobacco, big oil, chemicals, pharmaceuticals-use 'product defense' science to sow doubt about the hazards hidden in their products to consumers. His evidence highlights the important role unbiased government scientists play in protecting the public health of Americans and our environment from exposure to toxic materials and from corporate deceit. * Senator Tom Udall *From the pharmaceutical industry's role in the opioid crisis to the Koch brothers' climate denial apparatus, Michaels examines big industry's jarring history of manufacturing false scientific doubt in the name of profit. This is an important book that will serve as a tool in exposing corporate deceit. * Senator Sheldon Whitehouse *Whether it's the tobacco industry, the pharmaceutical industry, or the fossil fuel industry, vested interests have repeatedly sought to attack and discredit scientific findings that have revealed the public endangerment by their products. David Michaels should know-he's been fighting the good fight for more than a decade to expose the bad actors and bring them to justice. Read this book to learn what we're up against and how to fight back. * Michael E. Mann, author of The Madhouse Effect *Poisoning the well of public debate is the ultimate act of cynicism. As David Michaels makes breathtakingly clear, one industry after another has lied and manipulated in order to make more money, and the rest of us have borne the terrible costs." * Bill McKibben, author of Falter *While the truth can be inconvenient, corporations and government leaders cannot continue to manufacture alternative narratives that place their interests and profits above our humanity; this culture, if left unchallenged, will result in our doom. The Triumph of Doubt reminds us that there can only be one truth." * Bennet Omalu, author of Truth Doesn't Have a Side *Few people have done more to document disinformation about science than David Michaels. His new book is an important addition to the growing literature on doubt, disinformation, and deception. * Naomi Oreskes, author of Merchants of Doubt *In the NFL, team doctors answer to the organization; players joke that it's like Dracula running the blood bank. It's a microcosm of what David Michaels brilliantly illuminates in The Triumph of Doubt: When corporations manipulate science and launch marketing campaigns to sow doubt, they ensure human suffering. Michaels's work is vital reading for everyone to understand these industry tactics. * Chris Borland, former NFL player *Scientist, public servant, and passionate advocate for health and safety, Michaels has written an absorbing sequel to his path-breaking work on manufactured doubt. He documents how powerful corporations have turned 'product defense' into a new political strategy, using dark money to pummel good science and keep dangerous products on the market. A must-read in the fight to restore public trust in regulatory science." * Sheila Jasanoff, Harvard Kennedy School *Driven by scientific interest, The Triumph of Doubt is a measured but passionate argument for protecting the public from harmful substances via federal oversight." * Foreword Reviews *[An] excoriating account of the corporate denial industry... It is a brave and important book, raising the alarm about the systemic corruption of science. * Felicity Lawrence, Nature *A tour de force that examines how frequently, and easily, science has been manipulated to discredit expertise and accountability on issues ranging from obesity and concussions to opioids and climate change. * Science *David Michaels shows that Big Tobacco's well-known denial tactics have not faded into history, but instead have become an integral part of corporate America's standard business practices. * Undark Magazine *A no-holds barred page-turner. In a series of case studies, it names names and describes how powerful players prioritize a requirement of absolute proof over precaution when it comes to exposures' impacts on human health. * Union of Concerned Scientists *[Michaels'] book is a timely, must read indictment of product defense 'science.'" * Pittsburgh Post-Gazette *David Michaels opens our eyes to the methods corporations employ that bend the facts of science in order to make a profit. * Chemistry World *[A] close look at how powerful corporations fund junk science and misinformation campaigns in order to obscure evidence and undercut regulatory efforts." * Vox *The Triumph of Doubt is a carefully researched review of corporate-funded strategies and practices that undermine public health policies of all kinds. And while it sometimes makes one's blood boil, it is still a gripping read. * New Solutions *[An] excoriating account of the corporate denial industry.... Oxford University Press Inc The Principles and Practice of Disease
Book SynopsisThe Balmis Expedition from Spain to the New World in 1806, launched off the heels of Jenner''s publication on vaccinia vaccine a few years previously, was likely the world''s first eradication initiative. The mission was to eradicate the deadly smallpox from the Americas and beyond. That goal, over a century and half later conceptualized and implemented under the guidance of the World Health Organization (WHO), was eventually realized. The core content of this textbook is designed to reflect the teaching elements of an intensive, one-week eradication course given first to graduate students at the School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in Baltimore, United States, during the summer of 2012. The faculty of four consisted of the two editors of this textbook; Dr. Ciro de Quadros, former smallpox eradicator in Ethiopia and architect of the original polio eradication strategies; and Dr. D.A. Henderson, former head of the global smallpox eradication initiative, WHO. All four of us spent a full week together lecturing and mentoring JHU graduate students. In 2014, under the direction of Dr. Breman, the course was expanded and provided to graduate students at the Milken Institute School of Public Health, George Washington University. The materials in this textbook reflect the discussions in that course, especially with regards to what the co-editors believe to be the most practical, field relevant experiences and definitions. Given the rapidly changing medical and development world, this textbook highlights essential issues for success, illustrated by disease-specific case studies.

Oxford University Press Computational Molecular Evolution
Book SynopsisThe field of molecular evolution has experienced explosive growth in recent years due to the rapid accumulation of genetic sequence data, continuous improvements to computer hardware and software, and the development of sophisticated analytical methods. The increasing availability of large genomic data sets requires powerful statistical methods to analyse and interpret them, generating both computational and conceptual challenges for the field.Computational Molecular Evolution provides an up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of modern statistical and computational methods used in molecular evolutionary analysis, such as maximum likelihood and Bayesian statistics. Yang describes the models, methods and algorithms that are most useful for analysing the ever-increasing supply of molecular sequence data, with a view to furthering our understanding of the evolution of genes and genomes. The book emphasizes essential concepts rather than mathematical proofs. It includes detailed derivationsTrade ReviewWhat sets this books apart is the authority and thoughtfulness with which it is written, the thorough coverage of the relevant literature, and the great care that has been taken in the computational examples to compare different methods on the same set of data, and to present the results clearly. It will be an invaluable resource both for new graduate students and established researchers. It will be a major source for insight and enormously helpful for anyone who wants to understand molecular phylogenies. * The Quarterly Review of Biology *Table of ContentsPREFACE ; APPENDIXES ; REFERENCE
