Book SynopsisAt 30, Laura Doyle, like millions of women, was miserable in her marriage, but she couldn''t put her finger on the cause. ''I was lonely and I was exhausted from trying to do everything myself. When I learned to stop controlling and criticising my husband and practised receiving graciously, something magical happened. The union I had always dreamed of appeared. The man who had wooed me was back,'' writes Doyle. In THE SURRENDERED WIFE, Laura Doyle presents a radical and controversial approach to relationships: women can enjoy great sex, harmony and the intimacy they crave when they stop controlling their partner. Surrendering, she says, is the simplest principle for a great marriage and thousands of women swear by it. Covering both the emotional and practical aspects of marriage, it teaches women valuable lessons including how to respect the man they married, how to resist the temptation to bicker and how to trust their man. But most importantly, it shows how you can fall in love with

This fascinating book explores those findings, and their implications for the sexual behaviour of our own species. It uses the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland' who has to run at full speed to stay where she is as a metaphor for a whole range of sexual behaviours. Ranging from his Stevenage childhood to present day America, from the borders of Europe to division in South Africa, Younge explores the issues that bind the powerful elite and the poor immigrant, the fundamentalist and the conservative. Book SynopsisKristen Ghodsee and Mitchell A. Orenstein blend empirical data with lived experiences to produce a robust picture of who won and who lost in post-communist transition, contextualizing the rise of populism in Eastern Europe. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, more than 400 million people suddenly found themselves in a new reality, a dramatic transition from state socialist and centrally planned workers'' states to liberal democracy (in most cases) and free markets. Thirty years later, postsocialist citizens remain sharply divided on the legacies of transition. Was it a success that produced great progress after a short recession, or a socio-economic catastrophe foisted on the East by Western capitalists? Taking Stock of Shock aims to uncover the truth using a unique, interdisciplinary investigation into the social consequences of transitionincluding the rise of authoritarian populism and xenophobia. Showing that economic, demographic, sociological, political scientific, and ethnographic research produce contradictory results based on different disciplinary methods and data, Kristen Ghodsee and Mitchell Orenstein triangulate the results. They find that both the J-curve model, which anticipates sustained growth after a sharp downturn, and the disaster capitalism perspective, which posits that neoliberalism led to devastating outcomes, have significant basis in fact. While substantial percentages of the populations across a variety of postsocialist countries enjoyed remarkable success, prosperity, and progress, many others suffered an unprecedented socio-economic catastrophe. Ghodsee and Orenstein conclude that the promise of transition still remains elusive for many and offer policy ideas for overcoming negative social and political consequences.Trade ReviewLaudable * Anders Åslund, Europe-Asia Studies *Ghodsee has teamed up with political scientist Mitchell Orenstein to present a comprehensive survey of all the evidence that things have gotten worse for Eastern Europe since 1989 * Helen Andrews, The American Conservative, The American Conservative *Taking Stock of Shock results from a massive interdisciplinary endeavor, and it is a timely and crucial contribution to the debate on postsocialism. Knocking down disciplinary walls, Ghodsee and Orenstein provide a uniquely broad insight into the post-socialist landscape. This is more than merely a scholarly achievement. Building a compelling new narrative is crucial to help break down the walls of inequality and precarity that limit the actual exercise of the freedoms post-socialist citizens nominally gained when the Berlin Wall fell. * Gabor Scheiring, Review of Democracy, Review of Democracy *Ghodsee and Orenstein have written a provocative book. Drawing on an impressive array of economic, demographic, public opinion, and ethnographic data, they critically analyze the emergence of stark inequalities that have generated tremendous hardships for many and enormous benefits for some. * Gail Kligman, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, UCLA *From a starting point of cacophony, where different disciplines and data seem to depict the post-Soviet transition as either a grand success or an absolute failure, Ghodsee and Orenstein seam together a convincing narrative where both achievements and disappointments can coexist. The book's focus on widening inequality allows reconciling these opposing views and providing crucial insights not only for scholars of transition countries but also for observers and policymakers in other regions * Maurizio Bussolo, Lead Economist, World Bank *The book presents many important pieces of evidence which, taken together, document the developments and the images of transformation that have led to the disillusionment of the majority of the population in the region today. It is therefore not only a valuable contribution to the transformation discussion across different academic fields but also has an appeal for general audiences. * Luboš Studený, Historie-Otázky-Problémy *Table of ContentsList of Tables List of Figures Acknowledgments Authors' Note on Terminology Introduction: Transition from Communism - Qualified Success or Utter Catastrophe? Book SynopsisTrade ReviewWe chose ESPP because we have a very diverse cohort some students with Economic and Maths A level whilst others do not, so teaching a traditional course was hard most students were bored whilst others were struggling to keep pace. We wanted a more up-to-date, data-driven syllabus that covered the topics students wanted to discuss (inequality, climate change, etc.). I have just have finished teaching the first cohort of nearly 500 students and they seem to be highly engaged. * Carlos Cortinhas, University of Exeter, UK *ESPP was a very successful text for non-Economics majors. They really appreciated how they could get a great introduction to economics that focused on the real world and data, and was meaningful to their own experience of the world. * Mark Dodd, University of Adelaide, Australia *Other economics textbooks teach you about individual tools. ESPP, on the other hand, teaches you how to address complex issues such as inequality and unemployment by simultaneously using all the tools in the toolbox. As a public policy student, this approach allowed me to evaluate current events and policy proposals through an economically comprehensive, rather than fragmented, lens. * Alaina Leggette, MPA student at Columbia University (SIPA) *ESPP is an outstanding resource for teaching economic principles to students who will not major in the field. It provides an accessible yet comprehensive introduction to the economic ideas that are essential for understanding politics and policy. * Matthew DiGiuseppe, Leiden University, Netherlands *I would recommend ESPP as an excellent resource for a wide range of courses teaching introductory economics with a focus on public policy. It takes some of the key material from The Economy and re-packages it for students who are not specialising in economics, and who want to see the subject in a wider context. I appreciate the increased focus on data, with links to Doing Economics. * Stephen Wright, Birkbeck, University of London, UK *We were warned by the course leader before the start that we would not see the world in the same way after studying the module and this proved to be the case. While tackling the deep issues of global inequality and market failures CORE also gave us quick insights into specialist areas and analytical tools so I was able in the exam to solve a pure strategy Nash equilibrium and answer questions on the use of monetary policy and explain models of welfare economics. I particularly liked the snapshots of great economics thinkers and interactive graphics which brought complex ideas to life. The course succeeded in refreshing and updating my thinking and gave me confidence to work in more depth within the economics field as a financial journalist. The dynamic approach makes a sound rejoinder to the critics of the subject as the "dismal science" and its teaching which shows exactly how it is as relevant today as it was during the formative years of Adam Smith or the crisis years of Keynes. * Simon Greaves, FT.com and Student in MSc PPE, Birkbeck, University of London *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisLaw and society is a rapidly growing field that turns the conventional view of law as mythical abstraction on its head. Kitty Calavita brilliantly brings to life the ways in which law is found not only in statutes and courtrooms but in our institutions and interactions, while inviting readers into conversations that introduce the field's dominant themes and most lively disagreements. Deftly interweaving scholarship with familiar examples, Calavita shows how scholars in the discipline are collectively engaged in a subversive exposé of law's public mythology. While surveying prominent issues and distinctive approaches to both law as it is written and actual legal practices, as well as the law's potential as a tool for social change, this volume provides a view of law that is more real but just as compelling as its mythic counterpart. With this second edition of Invitation to Law and Society, Calavita brings up to date what is arguably the leading introduction to this exciting, evolvin

Book SynopsisFor most of western history, all sex outside marriage was illegal, with the church and state punishing any dissent. Between 1600 and 1800, this entire world-view was shattered by revolutionary new ideas - that consenting adults have the freedom to do what they like with their own bodies, and morality cannot be imposed by force. This groundbreaking book shows that the creation of this modern culture of sex - broadcasted and debated in a rapidly expanding universe of public media - was a central part of the Enlightenment, and helped create a new model of western civilization whose principles of equality, privacy and individual freedom last to this day.Trade ReviewPath-breaking ... touching ... His fat tome, The Orgins of Sex, took 20 years of historical research and is garnering the kind of "magisterial" reviews that cast Dabhoiwala in the role of the younger, cuter, Simon Schama -- Helen Rumbelow * The Times *Faramerz Dabhoiwala's The Origins of Sex, an enthralling history of changing ideas about sexual freedom and desire from 1600 to 1800, interestingly blends progressivist and circular approaches. He shows us a Western world (mainly England) emerging from medieval sexual morality and enjoying 200 years of relative freedom, but he also shows it sliding back into repression and denial in the 19th century. The future remains a question mark... his book [is] inspiring as well as provocative -- Sarah Bakewell * The Independent *In The Origins of Sex, Faramerz Dabhoiwala does for the history of sexual attitudes what Lawrence Stone did for the history of sex and the family. Rigorously academic in his approach, Dabhoiwala focuses on intellectual and social currents to trace the grand sweep of sexual attitudes between 1600 and 1800. His aim "is not primarily to enter into the bedrooms and between the sheets of the past", but to examine sex as a public, rather than private, preoccupation. It needed a writer as erudite as Faramerz Dabhoiwala to knit together established theories of changes in the Enlightenment and weave in the primary sources to show how sex figures in the bigger picture. The book is packed with information and peppered with fascinating examples. It will delight students of social and sexual history, and anyone interested in the history of ideas -- Times Literary Supplement * Julie Peakman *

Book SynopsisExplanations of how identities are constructed are fundamental to contemporary debates in feminism and in cultural and social theory. Formations of Class & Gender demonstrates why class should be featured more prominently in theoretical accounts of gender, identity and power. Beverley Skeggs identifies the neglect of class, and shows how class and gender must be fused together to produce an accurate representation of power relations in modern society. The book questions how theoretical frameworks are generated for understanding how women live and produce themselves through social and cultural relations. It uses detailed ethnographic research to explain how 'real' women inhabit and occupy the social and cultural positions of class, femininity and sexuality. As a critical examination of cultural representation - informed by recent feminist theory and the work of Pierre Bourdieu - the book is an articulate demonstration of how to translate theory into prTrade ReviewThis book is brilliant. Formations of Class and Gender is a sophisticated and passionately written account of the classed and gendered identities of a small group of working-class white women who live in the north-west of England. It is ethnography at its best, having been built on long-term, thoughtful engagements in the field. When Beverly Skeggs met these women they were all students on a variety of ′caring′ courses at a further education college. More than eleven years later, the production of this text testifies to the quality of theoretical analysis which can be produced if only those who fund research or press for lists of publications were willing to acknowledge that leading edge work normally requires real time. The text is concerned with the production of cultural and social relations and is located within an analytical framework which draws on the work of Bourdieu... Overall the text is a robust piece of writing which I have already recommended as required reading to my research students. -- Gender and EducationSkegg′s Bourdieu-influenced account of British cultures of class provides a useful empirical corrective to the more grandiose theorizing within recent cultural studies, underscoring not just the economic but the cultural and attitudinal gulf between working-class individuals and the left/feminist intellectuals who claim to be their allies. For this reason alone, it should be required reading. -- International Journal of Cultural StudiesIn a discipline that boasts a high division of labour, this book goes a long way in dismantling the futile divide between class theory and feminism. It is an articulate and impassioned ethnography, fuelled by an anger of inequality but also an anger at those who are reluctant to challenge it. At a time when sociologists seem less concerned with the tangible and more interested in the abstract, Skeggs shows how these can be used productively together; theory becomes a means to an end rather than an end in itself... This book really deserves to be read and taken seriously. It is a good example of responsible research which seeks to bring out the pains and humour of working- class life and the ways in which people negotiate their environments... But the greatest achievement of this book is that it gives a voice to a group of women in the hope that they can ′...no longer be ignored, made invisible, deconstructed to irrelevance, dismissed as part of a redundant concept, or pathologized as just another "social problem"′ (168). Book SynopsisHein de Haas, PhD, is Professor of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He is a founding member and former director of the International Migration Institute (IMI) at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, and now directs the IMI at its current home at the University of Amsterdam. Dr. de Haas is also Professor in migration and development at Maastricht University /United Nations UniversityMERIT. His research focuses on the linkages between migration and broader processes of social transformation and development in origin and destination countries.Stephen Castles, DPhil, was Honorary Professor of Sociology at the University of Sydney, Australia, before retiring in 2017, and served as the first director of the International Migration Institute at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom. His research has focused on international migration dynamics, global governance, migration and development, and migration trends in Africa, Asia, and EuroTrade ReviewThe Age of Migration offers the most comprehensive guide to understanding global migration patterns, both historically and in the present day, and the latest edition only confirms this assessment. Drawing expertly on the latest theories and evidence, the authors illuminate the causes of international migration as well as the consequences for the societies that send and receive the resulting flows of people. Their critical assessment of the policies by which nations attempt to manage these flows is a must-read for policy makers and the public alike. * Douglas S. Massey, Princeton University, USA *At a time when migration has become profoundly integral to social, economic and political change across the global stage, The Age of Migration gives us an incisive, state-of-the-art, yet accessible account of migratory processes and their implications for increasingly interconnected and diversifying societies. Updated with recent statistics and expanded to include forms of mobility linked to education, marriage, retirement and temporary labour migration, the sixth edition confirms its longstanding place on the book shelves of scholars and students of global migrations. * Brenda Yeoh, National University of Singapore *For scholars and students alike, The Age of Migration remains the most comprehensive guide to global mobility. The authors bring clarity to this complex phenomenon by addressing key theories and debates, regional patterns and histories, and emergent developments. The sixth edition, simply outstanding, updates this essential resource with new sections on emigration and migration governance, among others. * Kristin Surak, SOAS, UK *The latest edition of The Age of Migration provides an expanded and detailed assessment of global migration patterns within a comparative context. It provides a sophisticated account of how these patterns speak back to and are informed by theories of migration. This will make a great addition to scholars and students of migration. * Vince Marotta, Deakin University, Australia *Theoretically sophisticated and empirically wide-ranging, The Age of Migration keeps on getting better with each edition. With new, revised and updated chapters this is essentially a new book. Whether as core or background reading, using this textbook in your migration course is a no-brainer. * Maarten Vink, Maastricht University, the Netherlands *Migration is a transformative force. At a time when it seems that everybody has an opinion on international migration, The Age of Migration remains the go-to reference to learn about international migration in many of its aspects – it reliably informs and solidly sobers a field of knowledge that is often riddled with prejudice. The sixth edition combines consistency of argument with exposition of data that broadens beyond an exclusive Western-centric perspective and is more expansive on a variety of theoretical lenses woven through the chapters through which learning about and understanding of international migration can be approached. The Age of Migration occupies a central place in migration studies. * Christina Oelgemoller, Loughborough University, UK *By now a classic text on international migration, this sixth edition of The Age of Migration is the best so far. Understanding cross-border mobility is one of the major challenges of the 21st century, and this volume sets the gold standard for studies of migration across both the Western and the non-Western world. A must read for students, scholars, and policymakers alike. * Gerasimos Tsourapas, University of Birmingham, UK *The authors have updated the fifth edition to produce this definitive text on migration. New sections ensure that the book offers a rigorous and critical analysis of migration covering migration theories, patterns of migration, gender and migration and much more besides. Consequently, it will be useful to students, researchers and policymakers alike. The book challenges popular myths about migration, including that it is a peculiarity to the modern age, offering robust evidence to dispel such misconceptions. I strongly recommend The Age of Migration. * Ruth McAreavey, Newcastle University, UK *Table of Contents1. Introduction 2. Categories of Migration 3. Theories of Migration 4. Book SynopsisAeron Davis takes a close look at the state of elites today. He argues that the Brexit vote and 2017 election outcome are signs of a deeper leadership crisis that has been developing over decades. The great transformations of the 1980s onwards have not only upended societies, they have reshaped elite rule itself. Too many leaders today, regardless of intent, are ignorant, precarious, rootless and self-serving. Although richer, they have lost coherence, influence and control. Increasingly, they are just reckless opportunists, getting what they can amid the chaos they have created. Their failings are not only damaging wider society, they are undermining the very foundations of the Establishment itself. The book, based on interviews with over 350 elite figures, asks: how did we end up producing the leaders that got us here and what can we do about it?Trade Review‘An indispensable addition to elite scholarship that was decades in the making and arrives not a minute too soon. As the West continues to quake in the face of “populist” furore, Aeron Davis’s deft analysis of his “barbarians inside the gate” shows an establishment torn asunder. Scholars and pundits trying to make sense of the establishment overthrow in the West will ignore Reckless opportunists at their own peril’.Janine R. Wedel, Professor in the Schar School of Policy and Government, George Mason University‘Aeron Davis has spent two decades talking to members of the financial, political, and media elites – and here he lines them all up to explain how they’ve created the debacle that is Brexit Britain.’Aditya Chakrabortty, Senior Economics Commentator, The Guardian‘Aeron Davis’s new book on the Establishment re-writes the rules of the genre. He is a rare thing, a critical outsider who has managed to gain extensive insider access. His close-up accounts offer fascinating new insights into the apparent dysfunction of modern politics.’Iain Dale, political commentator, publisher, LBC broadcaster‘Chaos often feels like the best word to describe the world my generation is inheriting. Reckless Opportunists shines a light on how the decay of the Establishment feeds that chaos. It’s terrifying but it also gives me hope that a different and better world is possible.’Joe Earle, author of The Econocracy‘Aeron Davis pulls back the curtain on the wizards of Oz who rule us. Book SynopsisZygmunt Bauman is known internationally as the sociologist of postmodernity and ‘liquid’ society. But he was also a serious photographer. This book presents a selection of his black-and-white photographs, together with a range of essays by colleagues, friends and family about his work with images. The book features a mixture of short pieces on individual photographs and longer essays addressing aspects of Bauman’s photography and the life and work of his wife, Janina. These include an essay of Bauman’s from 1989, in which he considers Monika Krajewska’s photographs of abandoned Jewish graveyards in Poland. Also reprinted is an essay by Bauman’s daughter Lydia, taken from the catalogue of an exhibition of the photographs in 2010, and an essay by Keith Tester about Bauman’s interest in film. Jack Palmer discusses the relationship between Bauman’s sociology and his photography, while Peter Beilharz, Janet Wolff, and Antony Bryant and Griselda Pollock offer personal reflections on some of Bauman’s photographs. The book concludes with an essay by Karl Dudman, one of the Baumans’ grandchildren, based on a series of photographs he took in the family home shortly after his grandfather’s death.Janina Bauman appears in a number of ways in the book. Some of the photographs are of her, and several of the short essays discuss her place in Zygmunt’s life and work. Izabela Wagner, biographer of Zygmunt Bauman, presents new material on Janina’s work in the Polish film industry in the post-war period.Table of ContentsIntroduction: the photographs of Zygmunt BaumanFigures, images, spaces: the place of photography Peter BeilharzPictures in words, words in pictures (2010) Lydia Bauman Michael Sfard Photograph essay Antony Bryant and Griselda Pollock Photograph essayThe war against forgetfulness (1989) Zygmunt Bauman Sofia Hepworth Photograph essay Lydia Bauman Photograph essay Praxis, time, seeing: thoughts on the relationship between Zygmunt Bauman’s sociology and his photography Jack Palmer Peter Beilharz Photograph essay Emi Sfard Photograph essayCaptured by Zygmunt Janet Wolff Anna Sfard Photograph essay Sian Supski Photograph essayJanina Bauman in Film Polski: window to the free world Izabela Wagner Hana Bauman-Lyons Photograph essay Janet Wolff Photograph essayBauman and Tester at the movies Peter Beilharz Bauman and Bergman: a short note (2014) Keith Tester Ben Hepworth Photograph essay Karl Dudman Photograph essayGazing sociologically, thinking photographically, deciphering gender Antony Bryant and Griselda Pollock Alex Bauman-Lyons Photograph essay Irena Bauman Photograph essaySmoke-filled rooms: photographs from the Bauman home Karl Dudman

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCIXOUS, IRIGARAY, KRISTEVATHE JOUISSANCE OF FRENCH FEMINISM This book is a poetic study of three French feminists, Luce Irigaray, Julia Kristeva and Hélène Cixous, the ''holy trinity'' of French feminism. Kelly Ives writes: ''I hope to convey some the inspiration and excitement that their work instils. For these three feminists/ philosophers/ speakers/ poets are extraordinarily enriching. Their writings are not dull, nor yet are they limited to having one or two things to say. Rather, they say a lot, about a lot. Sometimes they write things that are outrageous, at other times they are incredibly, searingly poignant. They annoy many feminists - their insistence on the body and biology, for instance, aggravates some theorists.'' EXTRACT FROM THE INTRODUCTION Hélène Cixous, Luce Irigaray and Julia Kristeva all have different modes of writing. There are times when they are writing in the sober, tones of a cultural critic, philosopher or psychoanalyst. They have strident feminist voices (Cixous and Irigaray more than Kristeva). They are personal reminiscence modes. They have a relaxed, informal mode in interviews. And, most powerful of all, they have lyrical modes. Thus, Cixous, the most ''poetic'' of the three, will break into a visionary, ultra-lyrical way of writing. Luce Irigaray, too, changes, less frequently than Hélène Cixous, from a critical to a lyrical form. Thus, in a piece such as "When Our Lips Speak Together", Irigaray will write poetic sentences such as ''Kiss me. Two lips kiss two lips, and openness is ours again.'' This is the kind of phrase which never appears in most cultural theorists outside of quotation marks. One doesn''t find Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan, Gilles Deleuze, Jean Baudrillard, Mikhail Bakhtin, Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes or Jean-Paul Sartre writing ''kiss me'' very often. What marks Hélène Cixous, Luce Irigaray and Julia Kristeva apart from many cultural theorists and philosophers, then, is this personal, confessional and poetic way of writing, where they directly address the reader as the other, the ''you'' in an intimate relationship. Derrida, Foucault, Baudrillard, and Jakobson are rarely, if ever, this personal. KELLY IVES has written widely on feminism, philosophy and art. Her previous books include Julia Kristeva and Hélène Cixous. The text has been revised and updated for this edition. Illustrated, with a revised text. European Writers Series. Book SynopsisA fascinating persuasive history of how sugar has shaped the world, from European colonies to our modern dietsIn this eye-opening study, Sidney Mintz shows how Europeans and Americans transformed sugar from a rare foreign luxury to a commonplace necessity of modern life, and how it changed the history of capitalism and industry. He discusses the production and consumption of sugar, and reveals how closely interwoven are sugar's origins as a slave crop grown in Europe's tropical colonies with is use first as an extravagant luxury for the aristocracy, then as a staple of the diet of the new industrial proletariat. Richly observed and well-written, this book is a must-read for anyone who cares to truly understand the lives of those at the end of the line. -- Elijah Anderson, author of Black in White SpaceLife Underground provides unique documentation of the lives of homeless people living in underground tunnels and other spaces beneath the streets of New York City. No other work studies in so much detail the lives of people who might be considered the worst off of the city's worst off. -- Thomas J. Main, author of Homelessness in New York City: Policymaking from Koch to de BlasioTerry Williams has once again written a beautiful ethnographic piece, offering us a profound sociological work on 'shelterless life' below and at the margins of one of the richest but also socially polarized cities in the world: New York. Book SynopsisIn an era of skyrocketing tuition and concern over whether college is “worth it,” this is an indispensable contribution to the dialogue assessing the state of American higher education. A powerful exposé of unmet obligations and misplaced priorities, it explains in detail why so many leave college with so little to show for it.Trade ReviewInstead of being a great equalizer, Paying for the Party argues, the American way of college rewards those who come not just academically but socially prepared, while treating working-class students more cruelly, and often leaving them adrift. -- Ross Douthat * New York Times *A striking new book… Although full of the comedies, rivalries and mini-dramas one might find in a high school movie or romcom, it is also a serious—and seriously depressing—study of American higher education. -- Matthew Reisz * Times Higher Education *Beautifully written, knitting together themes of social class, gender, sexuality, organizations, and education, the book is destined to be a classic…Its authors have cemented their status as experts on higher education. -- Amy J. Binder * Chronicle of Higher Education *Paying for the Party is well written and perversely hard to put down. Readers who did their own share of partying in college may cringe in rueful recognition. -- Mary Taylor Huber * Change *Focusing on the pathways leading to the college experience, the authors reveal an honest, if at times unflattering, look at the reality of the academic experience for women of both high and low socioeconomic status. Packed in with the data derived from the authors’ interviews is an intimate portrait of the study’s participants combined with researcher commentary that clarifies what the data represent: an unsettling picture of universities failing to lessen the disadvantages facing many of their students… This work will provide spectacular insights into gender and schooling and serve as a useful example of how to report ethnographic research. -- Rachel Wadham * Library Journal (starred review) *In typical frat parties, Armstrong and Hamilton see much that is wrong with college education today. Such parties allow daughters of the affluent to flaunt their social advantages while exposing the vulnerabilities of female students from less-privileged backgrounds. Unfortunately, the authors find such parties well established in the ‘party pathway’ through the university. Focusing on female students, the authors find from campus observations and interviews ample evidence that four years on the party pathway will open doors of power for the elite while stranding the wannabes with mountains of student-loan debt and few employment options for paying off that debt… A provocative exposé of socially polarizing trends in higher education—certain to spark debate. -- Bryce Christensen * Booklist *Armstrong and Hamilton report the results of their five‐year study of a group of young women who began in the same freshman dorm but ended up in very different situations. The constraints of social and economic class remained formidable, and moving into the professional class seemed virtually impossible, especially for those women who followed what the authors call ‘the party pathway.’ Women from more privileged backgrounds survived their partying through school due to their more substantial support systems at home. We also see how difficult the college adjustment was for less talented students and for women from modest backgrounds and small towns… The conclusions are sobering, if not depressing. Armstrong and Hamilton assail the university itself for a number of failures, including an ineffectual system of student advising; a plethora of meaningless majors and courses designed to attract full‐paying students, many of whom have no intention of actually pursuing such a career; and its continuing support for the fraternity/sorority system, which the authors contend undermines the very academic mission of the university. Athletics take some major blame, as well. The authors also discovered that some of the women who transferred to regional campuses performed better and were happier. * Kirkus Reviews *Armstrong and Hamilton pepper the book with student interviews, and ultimately suggest substantial changes to university structure for creating an egalitarian, merit-based environment. The extensive research and approachable writing style make this book useful to any audience interested in learning more about social differences within the education system. * Publishers Weekly *With astute observations and insights, Paying for the Party sheds new light on the lived experiences of contemporary students. It is a very important piece of scholarship that will inform the national discourse on the current state of U.S. higher education. -- Richard Arum, author of Academically AdriftBy focusing on the lives of young women who spent freshman year living on a ‘party floor,’ Armstrong and Hamilton help us understand critical issues facing American higher education, including the out-sized role of sororities and fraternities and how the values of affluent students coincide with the interests of universities to empower the ‘party pathway.’ Richly observed and vividly narrated, this is an important ethnography of American campus life. -- Steven Brint, University of California, RiversideIn this bold book, Armstrong and Hamilton capture the strikingly different pathways women undergraduates can take through public universities—‘party,’ ‘professional,’ or ‘mobility’—and show how the dominant campus culture indulges the upper-middle class and limits the prospect of the upwardly mobile. The authors show the complex connections between parental resources, sociability, educational outcome, post-graduation lives, and the importance of the right brand of shoes. This book illuminates the realities of the college experience today, when an adult life without crushing debt is fast becoming the privilege of the few. -- Michèle Lamont, author of How Professors ThinkPaying for the Party is very provocative and should be read by every dean of students on every residential campus. At a time when women are making rapid progress in educational attainment compared to men, Armstrong and Hamilton show how young women’s academics, social lives, and labor-market opportunities get aligned in college—and what happens when they do not. -- Mitchell Stevens, author of Creating a Class

Book SynopsisIncorporating theoretical and quantitative history, this book examines a specific model of historical change and, more generally, investigates the utility of the dynamical systems approach in historical applications. It is of interest to practitioners of economic history, historical sociology, complexity studies, and demography.Trade Review"This book is an audacious and ambitious attempt to promote the viewpoint that historical progression runs according to certain regular patterns... I am fascinated by this book, particularly by the theoretical framework which is laid out in the introductory and concluding chapters... [T]he main strength of the book lies in its scope, reminiscent of the broad perspectives of classical economists. It is the type of scholarship which proves that historical narrative can be fascinating."--Harry Kitsikopoulos, EH.net "Those who are interested in grand social theories will want to read and reflect. I suspect that there will be many who then will rebut."--Brian J. L. Berry, American Journal of Sociology "Turchin and Nefedov have set a very ambitious task for themselves... [T]hey should be applauded for producing a work of very broad historical sweep and reminding us that developing general laws--or more plausibly, general tendencies--of historical dynamics remains a tantalizing proposition."--David S. Jacks, Australian Economic History Review "[T]he standard of historical scholarship is excellent and opens the floor to interesting challenges for further empirical explorations."--Laura Panza, Economic RecordTable of ContentsTable of Units and Currencies ix Chapter 1: Introduction: The Theoretical Background 1 1.1 Development of Ideas about Demographic Cycles 1 1.2 A Synthetic Theory of Secular Cycles 6 1.3 Variations and Extensions 21 1.4 Empirical Approaches 29 Chapter 2: Medieval England: The Plantagenet Cycle (1150-1485) 35 2.1 Overview of the Cycle 35 2.2 The Expansion Phase (1150-1260) 47 2.3 Stagflation (1260-1315) 49 2.4 Crisis (1315-1400) 58 2.5 Depression (1400-1485) 69 2.6 Conclusion 77 Chapter 3: Early Modern England: The Tudor-Stuart Cycle (1485-1730) 81 3.1 Overview of the Cycle 81 3.2 Expansion (1485-1580) 87 3.3 Stagflation (1580-1640) 91 3.4 Crisis (1640-60) 97 3.5 Depression (1660-1730) 101 3.6 Conclusion 107 Appendix to Chapter 3 108 Chapter 4: Medieval France: The Capetian Cycle (1150-1450) 111 4.1 Overview of the Cycle 111 4.2 Expansion (1150-1250) 115 4.3 Stagflation (1250-1315) 117 4.4 Crisis (1315-65) 121 4.5 Depression (1365-1450) 129 4.6 Conclusion: "A Near Perfect Multi-secular Cycle" 141 Chapter 5: Early Modern France: The Valois Cycle (1450-1660) 143 5.1 Overview 143 5.2 Expansion (1450-1520) 147 5.3 Stagflation (1520-70) 149 5.4 Crisis (1570-1600) 153 5.5 A Case Study: The Norman Nobility 156 5.6 Depression (1600-1660) 169 5.7 Conclusion 174 Chapter 6: Rome: The Republican Cycle (350-30 BCE) 176 6.1 Overview of the Cycle 176 6.2 An Unusually Long Expansion (350-180 BCE) 185 6.3 Stagflation (180-130 BCE) 189 6.4 The Late Republican Crisis (130-30 BCE) 201 6.5 The End of the Disintegrative Trend 205 6.6 Conclusion 208 Chapter 7: Rome: The Principate Cycle (30 BCE-285 CE) 211 7.1 Overview of the Cycle 211 7.2 Expansion (27 BCE-96 CE) 224 7.3 Stagflation (96-165 CE) 229 7.4 Crisis (165-97 CE) 233 7.5 Depression (197-285 CE) 236 7.6 Conclusion 238 Chapter 8: Russia: The Muscovy Cycle (1460-1620) 240 8.1 The Fifteenth-Century Crisis 240 8.2 Expansion (1460-1530) 241 8.3 Stagflation (1530-65) 244 8.4 Crisis (1565-1615) 252 8.5 Conclusion 258 Chapter 9: Russia: The Romanov Cycle (1620-1922) 261 9.1 Expansion (1620-1800) 261 9.2 Stagflation (1800-1905) 274 9.3 Crisis (1905-22) 287 9.4 Conclusion 299 Chapter 10: General Conclusions 303 10.1 Population Numbers 303 10.2 Elite Dynamics 304 10.3 The State 306 10.4 Sociopolitical Instability 307 10.5 Are There General Laws of Historical Dynamics? 311 Acknowledgments 315 References Cited 317 Index 341

Book SynopsisThis book provides an introduction to the role of diversity in complex adaptive systems. A complex system--such as an economy or a tropical ecosystem--consists of interacting adaptive entities that produce dynamic patterns and structures. Diversity plays a different role in a complex system than it does in an equilibrium system, where it often merely produces variation around the mean for performance measures. In complex adaptive systems, diversity makes fundamental contributions to system performance. Scott Page gives a concise primer on how diversity happens, how it is maintained, and how it affects complex systems. He explains how diversity underpins system level robustness, allowing for multiple responses to external shocks and internal adaptations; how it provides the seeds for large events by creating outliers that fuel tipping points; and how it drives novelty and innovation. Page looks at the different kinds of diversity--variations within and across types, and Trade Review"Scott Page effectively illustrates the multiplicity of results from diverse aspects of complex systems. While all too many social scientists have tried to focus on making analysis simple, Page points out that this overlooks the great variety of relevant material in our social worlds. I am looking forward to having my students read it in my graduate seminar and encourage others to do so as well."—Elinor Ostrom, winner of the Nobel Prize in economics"At once clear and precise, Page not only makes a persuasive case for the advantages of diversity in biological, ecological, and social systems alike, but also provides the reader with the analytical tools necessary to engage real-world debates in a rational, even quantitative manner. The result is a valuable primer on a difficult and important subject."—Duncan J. Watts, author of Small Worlds: The Dynamics of Networks between Order and Randomness"Scott Page has performed a remarkable work of synthesis. The concepts of diversity and its implications for performance and growth are common to many fields, especially biology and economics. Page has drawn these illustrations together and shown the common elements and how each field illuminates others."—Kenneth J. Arrow, winner of the Nobel Prize in economics"Page engagingly seduces readers into rather deep ideas in complex systems, including sophisticated mathematical formulas, by using a relaxed style with lots of examples. Yet the treatment is rigorous."—Simon A. Levin, Princeton University"One of the book's many strengths is that it draws upon insights from seemingly disconnected areas of research and shows how they can be viewed within a common framework. Page's style is lively and conversational, making challenging subject matter quite readable, but without any sacrifice of rigor. He manages to convey both the excitement and difficulty of analyzing complex systems and the role of diversity within them."—Rajiv Sethi, Barnard College, Columbia UniversityTable of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Prelude: The Meaning of Diversity 1 Chapter 1: On Diversity and Complexity 16 Chapter 2: Measuring Diversity 54 Chapter 3: The Creation and Evolution of Diversity 79 Chapter 4: Constraints on Diversity 127 Chapter 5: Variation in Complex Systems 148 Chapter 6: Diversity's Inescapable Benefits I: Averaging 167 Chapter 7: Diversity's Inescapable Benefits II: Diminishing Returns to Types 183 Chapter 8: Diversity's Impact in Complex Systems 196 Chapter 9: Parting Thoughts 249 Bibliography 257 Notes 271 Index 281

Book SynopsisTakes readers into the intriguing world of machine gambling, an increasingly popular and absorbing form of play that blurs the line between human and machine, compulsion and control, risk and reward.Trade ReviewWinner of the 2013 Sharon Stephens First Book Prize, American Ethnological Society Honorable Mention for the 2013 Gregory Bateson Prize, The Society for Cultural Anthropology The Atlantic Editors' "The Best Book I Read This Year" for 2013, chosen by senior editor Alexis C. Madrigal "Natasha Dow Schull, an anthropologist at MIT, has written a timely book. Ms Schull has spent two decades studying the boom in casino gambling: the layout of its properties, the addicts and problem gamblers who account for roughly half its revenue in some places, and the engineering that goes into its most sophisticated products. Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas reads like a combination of Scientific American's number puzzles and the 'blue Book' of Alcoholics Anonymous."--Christopher Caldwell, Financial Times "Addiction by Design is a nonfiction page-turner. A richly detailed account of the particulars of video gaming addiction, worth reading for the excellence of the ethnographic narrative alone, it is also an empirically rigorous examination of users, designers, and objects that deepens practical and philosophical questions about the capacities of players interacting with machines designed to entrance them."--Laura Noren, PublicBooks "Schull adds greatly to the scholarly literature on problem gambling with this well-written book... Applying an anthropological perspective, the author focuses especially on the Las Vegas gambling industry, seeing many of today's avid machine gamblers as less preoccupied with winning than with maintaining themselves in the game, playing for as long as possible, and entering into a trance-like state of being, totally enmeshed psychologically into gaming and totally removed from the ordinary obligations of everyday life... The book offers a most compelling and vivid picture of this world."--Choice "If books can be tools, Addiction by Design is one of the foundational artifacts for understanding the digital age--a lever, perhaps, to pry ourselves from the grasp of the coercive loops that now surround us."--Alexis Madrigal, The Atlantic "Natasha Schull's Addiction By Design is fascinating, absorbing, and at times, a bit frightening... Schull's work will have wide relevance to many audiences, including those interested in technology studies, media studies, software studies, game studies, values-in-design, and the psychology and sociology of addiction and other technologically mediated behavioral disorders."--Hansen Hsu, Social Studies of Science "Original, ambitious, and written with elegant lucidity, Addiction by Design presents us with a narrative that is as compulsive as the behavior it describes. The book repositions debates in the field of gambling and will surely become a classic text in studies of society and technology."--Gerda Reith, American Journal of Sociology "Based on fifteen years of ethnographic work, Addiction by Design is an ambitious and thought-provoking book that challenges the neoliberal ethos currently governing the way in which governments and professionals think about gambling addiction."--Kah-Wee Lee, Technology and Culture "A handbook on regaining our proper orientation to the world. Schull's book offers a grim warning about the ways others can deliberately cut us off from natural and supernatural joys."--Leah Libresco, CommonwealTable of ContentsAcknowledgments vii Note on Informant Anonymity xiii Introduction: Mapping the Machine Zone 1 Part One: Design 1. Those of us who remain occupy one of the most tenuous positions in an extraordinarily tenuous industry. That seems to be what attracted the attention of Phillipa K. Chong, a sociology professor at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. . . . Chong offers rare insight."---Ron Charles, Washington Post Book Club"Phillipa Chong’s precise, insightful and fascinating book focuses on journalist critics of fiction who write with an eye to newsworthiness as well as literary value, rather than academics."---Robert Eaglestone, Times Higher Education"[An] exploration of how books get reviewed, what the consequences are, and whether any of it means anything at all. . . . Chong works diligently through the review process. . . . Useful reading for book critics and journalists who cover books." * Kirkus Reviews *"Inside the Critics’ Circle allows academics the opportunity to reflect on how they enact their own roles as reviewers and provides valuable contributions to the sociology of culture, economic sociology, and the sociology of knowledge. . . . Sociologists who study cultural fields and valuation will refer to and cite this book for years to come."---Hannah Wohl, American Journal of Sociology"[A] deep dive into the inner workings of journalistic book criticism in ‘the Anglophone publishing field,’ and a must-read for critics and editors alike. . . . Impressively, Chong has managed in this study through substantial empirical data to draw a clear, detailed, and nuanced picture of a rather tricky profession."---Dana Hansen, Hamilton Review of Books"Inside the Critics' Circle is an interesting inside look at the current state of (fiction) book reviewing in the United States, specifically as perceived by (presumably) significant actors in the field."---M.A. Orthofer, The Complete Review"I perceived a book review — still perceive it, most days — as an avocation that’s as much private as it is public. . . . This public-private feeling is a common one, according to Phillipa K. Chong’s academic but engaging analysis of book reviewing, Inside the Critics’ Circle. An assistant professor of sociology at McMaster University, Chong endeavored to put some scientific rigor around the motivations of fiction reviewers by interviewing 40 of them, a random sample drawn from more than 1,000 bylines that had appeared in one of three major (but unnamed) national newspapers. What she uncovered is a lack of sense of purpose that’s distinct from criticism in other disciplines."---Mark Athitakis, On the Seawall"An insightful account of inner workings of writing and publishing book reviews. . . . Chong has the knack of presenting . . . ideas in an interesting manner with her sharp wit and clarity of thoughts."---Mohammad Farhan, The Hindu"Inside the Critics’ Circle is first-rate academic research. . . . Ya-Wen Lei traces the contours of this techno-developmental regime and its resulting form of techno-state capitalism, telling the stories of those whose lives have been transformed—for better and worse—by China’s rapid rise to economic and technological dominance.Drawing on groundbreaking fieldwork and a wealth of in-depth interviews with managers, business owners, workers, software engineers, and local government officials, Lei describes the vastly unequal values assigned to economic sectors deemed “high-end” versus “low-end,” and the massive expansion of tech

These basic human behaviours come into play in all types of relationships, including those between businesses and customers. Selfish, Scared and Stupid: Stop fighting human nature and increase your performance, engagement and influence, demystifies these behaviours and examines the psychology behind why even the best ideas sometimes fail. This book helps businesses design their organisations for reality rather than perfection, and also offers strategies to head off unprecedented levels of disengagement within, and outside, the business. Based on extensive research, and written with clarity, grace, and wit, The Rise of Viagra chronicles an incredible intertwining of bodies, pleasures, marketing savvy, and the undying quest for the medical fix. -- Steven Epstein, author of Impure Science: AIDS, Activism, and the Politics of KnowledgeA fine piece of contemporary history. The Rise of Viagra paints a thoughtful portrait, letting the reader decide whether the Viagra phenomenon is ultimately to be celebrated or rued. -- Katharine Greider, author of The Big Fix: How the Pharmaceutical Industry Rips Off American ConsumersMeika Loes book tells the story of Viagra with skill and verve. She brings to that tale a sharp eye, a fine ear, and just the right degree of irony. -- Daniel Callahan, author of What Price Better Health: Hazards of the Research ImperativeThe book is not a polemic but a deep and thoughtful examination of derivative problems not anticipated by Viagras aggressive marketers. It is especially effective when placing the campaign to promote Viagra (a trade name) in the greater context of the medicalization of modern health care. * Choice *Meika Loe's core argument is that the unprecedented success of Viagra in America is not the result of an exciting scientific breakthrough bringing relief to the desperate or the dying. Rather, commercial interests have created a socially desirable but medically limited product-ironically, by denying the fundamentally social nature of sex. . . . Authored by an internationally renowned and experienced group of authors in the Department of Sociology at the University of Essex, this is a truly international criminology text that delves into areas that other texts may only reference. It includes substantive chapters on the following topics:â Histories of crime;â Theoretical approaches to crime and the issue of social change;â Victims and victimisation;â Crime, emotion and social psychology;â Drugs, alcohol, health and crime;â Criminal justice and the sociology of punishment; â Green criminology;â Crime and the media;â Terrorism, state crime and human Trade Review"The British have always done critical criminology well and this is by far one of the best introductions to critical criminology available. One of the strengths of this text and what distinguishes it from many market competitors is that the authors are scholars of international distinction who do groundbreaking research and don’t just report on it. They know their field and this allows them to avoid some of tropes and clichés encountered in other textbooks. And if you are looking for an introduction to criminology that avoids a lot of the parochialism of other texts, this is the one to read, with each new edition increasingly global in scale and ambition."John Scott, Professor, School of Justice, Faculty of Law, Queensland University of Technology, Australia "Criminology: A Sociological Introduction continues to be one of the most accessible, engaging and stimulating Criminology textbooks on the market. Now in its fourth edition, this book takes students through the most important socio-criminological issues of our time and is a resource that they will return to throughout their degree studies." Yvonne Jewkes, Professor of Criminology, Department of Social & Policy Sciences, University of Bath, UK"Like a Nebbiolo wine with well-balanced tannins, Criminology: A Sociological Introduction continues to age well; but like a nouveau, this latest edition is exuberant, fresh, vibrant and zesty!
