Scion Publishing Ltd The GP Consultation Reimagined: A tale of two
Book SynopsisA new and creative way of thinking about the consultation in primary care, for both trainees and practising GPs The book features a unique Two Houses model to help the reader move away from completing a series of tasks to focusing on the two key objectives at the heart of every consultation: Working out what matters (The House of Discovery) Deciding with the patient what to do about it (The House of Decision) Using the rich metaphors contained within these houses, the book explores common pitfalls that can beset those who are learning the craft of consulting in primary care, and encourages the reader to fill their toolbox with the skills needed to develop their own patient-centred consultation style. The GP Consultation Reimagined is based on the author's experience of teaching communication skills over 10 years as a GP Training Programme Director. This is supported by the use of summary key points and reference to further reading; excellent prompts for reflection are liberally used and a whole chapter on case studies brings the text to life. The patient perspective is always present and recognition of the knowledge they have of their condition(s). The importance of using knowledge comes through strongly, not only through a dedicated chapter but threaded through the book, for example the reference to evidence underpinning self management practice. The author highlights the importance of not throwing out initiatives that work for the sake of something new. Rutgers University Press Practice Under Pressure Primary Care Physicians
Book SynopsisThrough ninety-five in-depth interviews with primary care physicians (PCPs) working in different settings, as well as medical students and residents, Practice Under Pressure provides rich insight into the everyday lives of generalist physicians in the early twenty-first centuryùtheir work, stresses, hopes, expectations, and values.Trade Review"Practice Under Pressure could not be more timely. Timothy Hoff has written a concise, compelling examination of the work of primary care based on integration of qualitative data and published quantitative findings. Hoff interviewed 88 PCPs, residents, and students, as well as 2 nonphysician leaders. The book's power emanates from these narratives." * Journal of the American Medical Association *"In this timely book, Timothy Hoff presents a survey of ninety primary care physicians. They speak their minds—and hearts. Hoff explains how, in a generation, our family doctors gave up hospital practice and found themselves boxed into fifteen minutes of face time with patients in the office: the business model that favors technology over talking and thinking. Primary care, which we need more of, cannot compete with the higher prestige and earnings of specialties like surgery and radiology. This book will help everyone—professionals, the public, and politicians—to grasp the nettle. Meanwhile the US healthcare system hardly deserves a passing grade." * ForeWord Reviews *"Sociologist Timothy Hoff takes us to the heart and soul of the primary care crisis in America. Through personal stories, he reveals the daily frustrations and the deep compassion of these dedicated physicians." -- Bruce Bagley, M.D. * former president, American Academy of Family Physicians *"The erosion of primary medical care is of increasing concern for the organization of our health care system, for patients, and for issues of access and cost. In this book, Timothy Hoff looks at this issue through the perspectives of primary care physicians and provides useful information for understanding significant changes in medical care and future challenges." -- David Mechanic * Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research, Rutgers University *"This is the best book on primary care to come along in years. Hoff's recommendations for improvement are grounded in the everyday experience of primary care providers and what they and others will need to make such improvements reality." -- Stephen M. American Psychological Association A Systemic Approach to Behavioral Healthcare
Book SynopsisThis book provides clinicians, consultants, and healthcare administrators with a roadmap to establishing a systemic, patient-centered, family-oriented behavioral health service that is integrated into a healthcare setting. Healthcare that goes beyond biomedical issues to address our whole biopsychosocial selves, produces better outcomes for patients and families. Integrating behavioral health into medical settings requires an understanding of the interplay of multiple systemic layers in American healthcare. The existing literature on integration largely fails to address the 'big picture' of integrated services and systems, including operations, clinical processes, and financial sustainability elements.A Systemic Approach to Behavioral Healthcare Integrationsummarizes the literature on the impact of integrating behavioral health care into medical settings, on the role of families in health maintenance and chronic disease management, and on team scieTable of ContentsForeword Preface Acknowledgements Prologue Introduction: Why a Systemic Lens Is Critical for Integrated Care Part 1: Overview: The Systemic Evolution of Integrated Care Chapter 1: Models of Integrated Care and Beyond Chapter 2: The Rise of Integrated Clinical Approaches Chapter 3: Healthcare Reform and Emerging Models of Research Part II: Overview: Systemic Integrated Care Implementation Chapter 4: Healthcare Education, Financing, and Equity Chapter 5: Organization and Practice Level Integration Chapter 6: Shifting Practice Behaviors of Clinicials, Staff, and Administrators Part III: Overview: A Systemic Lens for Integrated Clinical Services Chapter 7: Clinical Theory, Strategies, and Research Chapter 8: The Developing Evidence Base for Systemic Interventions Chapter 9: Adult Healthcare Chapter 10: Pediatrics Chapter 11: Women’s Health Chapter 12: Conclusion: Envisioning an Integrated Healthcare Home Epilogue References Index About the Authors

University of Toronto Press The Newborn A Practical Guide
Book SynopsisConvinced that there is a need for a book in paediatrics that is neither a classical text nor a handbook, but a guide in the management of paediatric problems, the authors have compiled this book for the use of general practitioners, interns, and students. In it they present an orderly investigation of situations which may confront the doctor, stressing the urgency of early diagnosis for which specific treatment is available. Major problems are discussed, and although no attempt has been made to describe all neonatal disease, some of the rarer entities are included, since early recognition is important for successful management. The book beings with “Care of the Full-Term Baby,” and then discusses the major problems of new-borns. A chapter on “Congenital Abnormalities” reviews the main disabilities that can be prevented or treated during the first month of life. Some chapters include definitions of terminology; some present physiological, aetiological, a

Nova Science Publishers Inc Advances in Polymers for Biomedical Applications
Book SynopsisPolymers have generated considerable interest in a large number of technologically important fields such as human healthcare systems. Polymers represent a very important domain of materials and have become an integral part of day to day human life. Polymers exist in nature; they have been and continue to be an integral part of the universe. This book is intended for scientists and researchers to use in their research or in their professional practice in polymer chemistry and its biomedical applications. Multiple biological, synthetic and hybrid polymers are used for multiple medical applications. A wide range of different polymers are available, and they have the advantage to be tunable in physical, chemical and biological properties and in a wide range to match the requirements of specific applications. This book gives a brief overview about the introduction and developments of polymers for different applications. The biomedical polymers comprise not only bulk materials, but also coatings and pharmaceutical nano-carriers for drugs. The surface modification of the inorganic nanoparticles with a physically or chemically end-tethered polymer chain has been employed to overcome the problems associated with the polymers. Chemically attached polymer chains not only stabilize the inorganic nanoparticles, but also lead to photosensitivity, bioactivity, biocompatibility and pharmacological properties in the composites. Polymer encapsulated silica nanocomposites (mesoporous) have potential applications in different fields, such as optics, bio-catalysis, microelectronics bone tissue engineering, coatings cosmetics, inks, agriculture, drug release systems, diagnoses, enzyme imaging, temperature-responsive materials, and thermosensitive vehicles for cellular imaging. Polymer grafted nanosized particles are known to have excellent properties such as good dispersion ability in solvents and polymer matrices. Polymer-based controlled drug delivery systems have some specific advantages, such as improved efficiency and reduced toxicity. The incorporation of a thermoresponsive polymer layer often enhances protein absorption and specific biomolecular tagging through hydrogen bonding. As a result, the nanocomposite gets cleared from the body at a faster rate (blood residence becomes low). This book is composed of fourteen edited chapters; it is intended for scientists and researchers to use in their research or in their professional practice in polymer chemistry and its biomedical applications.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Investigating Patient Safety
Book SynopsisThe book opens with a summary on the main theories representative of human error, such as: "Bad Apples Theory", "Normal Accident Theories" and "High Reliability Organizations Theory". Following this, the authors define mistakes in the diagnostic process, identifying their major causes and suggesting several principles for optimal, bias-free diagnoses. Evidence is presented which supports the idea that the Common Assessment Framework is a total quality management tool that public organizations can use for free for their self-assessment, aiming to improving their administrative capacity and services without having to ask for support from external sources. An analytical exploration of patient advocacy related to patient safety and the concept of a "Theory-Practice-Ethics gap" is presented, reinforcing the importance of their synonymous relationship for trustworthy healthcare practices. The concluding chapter proposes that inline fluid warming devices must employ the safest technology to ensure patients are not exposed to additional risks during the active warming of infused fluids.Table of ContentsPreface; The Error as a Parameter of Healthcare Quality; Pursuing Patient Safety through Researching and Reducing Diagnostic Errors and Applying a Systematic Approach to Diagnosis; The Implementation of the Common Assessment Framework in Public Healthcare Organizations: Improving Patient Safety through Improvement of Organizational Performance; Patient Safety without Patient Advocacy Is Improbable, as They Are Synonymous: Is There a Theory-Practice-Ethics Gap?; Air Embolism and Hypothermia Associated with Intravenous Fluid Therapy: Risk Management Considerations; Index.

Especially useful for trainee GPs such as myself, but equally useful to fall back on for experienced GPs in busy clinics. Definitely recommend.' Amazon reviewer THE BEST handbook for new UCPs/ACPs ‘Having spent hundreds of pounds on books recently to support my move into face to face, Out of Hours care as an Urgent Care Practitioner (I’m a trainee Advanced Nurse Practitioner). I found most books missed the mark and didn’t give me the concise or relevant information I needed. This is not a detailed or in depth learning book, so make sure you have your basic consultation and assessment skills. However, it acts as a fantastic, small, handy, quick reference guide. Firstly, I identify the probable diagnosis, find the relevant chapter and then I check the presentation detail matches the symptoms of the patient. Then I follow the management plan. It even gives medication ideas, even though you need to follow your local policy. It also points out red flag symptoms and highlights when a patient ought to be referred to another service. An EXTREMELY helpful book, that fills a large gap in the market. Well done Dr Bupal, you’ve given me immense confidence in my new role and I’m very thankful for your publication. Thank you.'
