Book Synopsis One of the most influential sportsmen of the late 20th century, Johnny F. Bassett''s marketing wizardry belied his impact on professional hockey and football. A Canadian showman with a Barnumesque flair for spectacle, Bassett challenged the orthodoxy of sports, building sporting utopias in the fatally flawed World Football League, World Hockey Association, and United States Football League. He catered to the common fan, demanded fair treatment of athletes, and forced the sporting establishment to change the way it did business, often to his own detriment. Drawing on archival research and interviews with Bassett''s contemporaries, this comprehensive biography chronicles his life in and around professional sports: his quixotic attempt to compete with the Maple Leafs; his stunning coup in signing three members of the reigning Super Bowl champions for his WFL team; his battles with the Canadian government over American football; his audacious marketing of hockey in Alabama; Table of ContentsAcknowledgments viiiPreface 1Introduction 3One—Young Bassett and the Show Business of Sports 7Two—Show Business Leads to Sports Business 15Three—Battle for the Hockey Heart and Soul of Toronto 27Four—No Defense, No Discipline, No More Toronto 36Five—No, Canada: The WFL Northmen and Canadian Anti-Americanism 45Six—Bassett Becomes a Political Football 57Seven—The Best of a Bad League 76Eight—Too Good for the WFL, Not Enough for the NFL 89Nine—Selling Hockey in Alabama 103Ten—Emancipation of the Canadian Juniors 119Eleven—Tennis, the USFL and the Bandits 131Twelve—Bandit-Ball 152Thirteen—The Model USFL Franchise 165Fourteen—The Death of the USFL and Bassett 179Fifteen—Conclusion 197Chapter Notes 207Bibliography 223Index 231

Book Synopsis The Cleveland Barons should never have existed. Born when the National Hockey League''s California Golden Seals--another team that should never have existed--were transplanted to Cleveland in 1976 and greeted with apathy by the dwindling number of hockey fans in northeastern Ohio, the Barons were an embarrassment to the city and to the NHL. The only thing the team had going for them was the state-of-the-art arena they played in, which was all but empty for nearly every game they played. This book chronicles the Barons'' two regrettable seasons--a case study in what happens when an ill-conceived professional sports team created in an expansion splurge is moved, in an effort to save it, to a city that doesn''t really want it.Table of Contents Introduction 1. This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us 2. Go East, Young Golden Seals 3. Becoming the Barons 4. Where's the Red Carpet? 5. Hockey for the Holidays 6. Buddy, Can You Spare a Payroll? 7. Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch 8. Who Wants to Buy a Slightly Used Hockey Team? 9. A Second Chance 10. New Faces, New Season, Same Script 11. One Shining Moment 12. Just Teasing 13. Look Out Below! 14. The Survey Says… Epilogue Chapter Notes Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisSam Quek is mainly known for her starring role in the 2016 Olympic gold medal winning hockey team. This was the first time a British ladies team had won gold, but what is much less known is that Sam's rise to the top of her spot was far from easy. Sam missed out on being part of Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics but competed for England at the 2013 EuroHockey tournament and 2014 Commonwealth Games, which she won silver medals. She won the gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics after the GB hockey team beat the Netherlands on penalties. How Sam overcame the bitter disappointment of being overlooked for the two previous Olympics and ensured that she wouldn't miss out again are revealed here for the first time. She also tells of her tough childhood and her battle to reach the heights that she has. She then went on to further fame by appearing in 'I'm a Celebrity' where she proved to be hugely popular with the viewing public, eventually finishing fourth. Sam now presents a variety of sports for TV, including men and women's football, NFL and hockey. She has been signed up to be the main presenter for the women's World Hockey Championships in 2018, held in August. She is hugely popular on social media with thousands of followers on twitter and instagram. Sam also has some very strong views on how women are portrayed in sport and their treatment by both coaches and the media. 2 in stock

Book SynopsisWhen Great Britain failed to qualify for the women's hockey competition at the 2004 Athens Olympics, the sport was at its lowest point. Sliding down the world rankings, in-fighting and discord within the squad, no funding and very little prospect of a bright future. Three players - Crista Cullen, Helen Richardson and Kate Walsh - were junior members of that team, and would have been forgiven for walking away at that point. Fast forward 12 years and the same three players were at the heart of the greatest moment in Great Britain women's hockey, standing on the podium in Rio de Janeiro with Olympic gold medals proudly hanging around their necks. During those intervening years, the team had undergone a transformation. It was no easy journey, but a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows, triumphs and disasters - with casualties along the way. The History Makers is more than an account of a famous victory. It is the story of how a team changed its culture and its attitude and transformed a sport barely worth a mention in the press into the provider of an Olympic moment that gripped the nation.

Book SynopsisSeoul Glow tells the story of the Great Britain men's hockey team who won gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Little to the team's knowledge, the final caught the British public's imagination as they beat rivals West Germany in the gold-medal match. After Sean Kerly's semi-final heroics and Imran Sherwani's double in the final, BBC commentator Barry Davies uttered the now infamous line: 'Where were the Germans? But, frankly, who cares?' Victory, for a team of amateurs, who had either quit their jobs or taken holiday to play in Seoul, propelled the team to celebratory heights on their return to British shores; it was GB's first hockey gold in the post-war era and followed an eight-year plan for a major title. The story also reveals how the team was inspirationally led by the late Roger Self, the manager who gelled his players into Olympic title holders.

Book SynopsisWinner of the NASSS Outstanding Book Award Hockey and multiculturalism are often noted as defining features of Canadian culture; yet, rarely are we forced to question the relationship and tensions between these two social constructs. This book examines the growing significance of hockey in Canada’s South Asian communities. The Hockey Night in Canada Punjabi broadcast serves as an entry point for a broader consideration of South Asian experiences in hockey culture based on field work and interviews conducted with hockey players, parents, and coaches in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. This book seeks to inject more “color” into hockey’s historically white dominated narratives and representations by returning hockey culture to its multicultural roots. It encourages alternative and multiple narratives about hockey and cultural citizenship by asking which citizens are able to contribute to the webs of meaning that form the nation’s cultural fabric.Trade Review"Changing on the Fly will force a rethinking of race, hockey, and the politics of citizenship in the social margins. In this pioneering text, Szto’s rich intertextuality highlights the competing and contradictory nature of race and representation in sport. There is nothing else like it." -- Stanley Thangaraj * author of Desi Hoop Dreams *"Changing on the Fly offers an original, powerful analysis of the hockey rink and the racial, national, gendered, and political landscape. Szto's ability to build on existing scholarship all while carving out new areas of analysis and her centering of South Asian Canadians' voices will change the ways we talk about sport, about hockey and about the (South) Asian Diaspora. Stzo is a force who will shape discussions in sports studies for decades to come. The future of sports studies is in good hands with Stzo leading the way." -- David Leonard * author of Playing While White: Privilege and Power on and off the Field *"A groundbreaking book. Courtney Szto’s insightful study of hockey’s growing significance in Canadian South Asian communities, as well as challenges faced by racialized Canadians when they play the game, makes an important contribution to the analysis of contemporary Canadian society." -- Richard Gruneau * Simon Fraser University *"This is a desperately-needed intervention from our most influential scholar of race and hockey through both a systematic and nuanced analysis of how multiculturalism and racism shape Canada and its beloved sport, and a powerful account of how those dynamics are experienced." -- Nathan Kalman-Lamb * author of Game Misconduct: Injury, Fandom, and the Business of Sport *"Interview: Dr. Courtney Szto, author of "Changing on the Fly: Hockey Through the Voices of South Asian Canadians" https://www.burnitalldownpod.com/episodes/interview-dr-courtney-szto-author-of-changing-on-the-fly-hockey-through-the-voices-of-south-asian-canadians * Burn It All Down podcast *"Changing on the Fly interrogates the culture of hockey honestly, and from a place of love, offering a critique that is meant to change the nature of the sport so that everyone — not just white, straight Canadian men and boys — can truly have a place in it." * The Tyee *"The groundbreaking work of Courtney Szto in Changing on the Fly captures the multiple ways that the Canadian national pastime of ice hockey constitutes an important site to examine the essential izing and shifting realms of race and belonging....[A] call to action and a demand to think about race critically in relation to sport and the nation. Changing on the Fly destabilizes the normative investments in sport and the nation while articulating forms of citizenship that can be liberating. With the increasing discussion and silence around race in professional sports, this book is vital to understanding the expansive infrastructure that secures whiteness and excludes communities of color." * Sociology of Sport Journal *Table of ContentsContents Dedication - iii List of Acronyms - vii Acknowledgements - 1 Introduction - 2 Complicating Canadian Culture - 7 Research Methods - 13 Overview of the Book - 17 Chapter 1 Myth Busting: Hockey, multiculturalism, and Canada - 21 Myth #1: Hockey is Canada - 21 Who or what are we integrating? - 26 Myth #2: Canada is a multicultural haven - 31 Whiteness in Canadian hockey - 38 Citizenship - 41 South Asians in Canada - 44 The Space of Surrey - 48 Chapter 2 Narratives from the Screen: Media and cultural citizenship - 53 Hockey Night in Punjabi - 55 Ethnic (Sports) Media - 59 Breaking Barriers - 62 Co-Authoring One’s Existence - 63 Limits of Ethnic Media - 71 Chapter 3 White Spaces, Different Faces: Policing membership at the rink and in the nation - 78 Who belongs in a space?
