So often Africa is depicted simplistically as an arid red landscape of famines and safaris, uniquely plagued by poverty and strife. In this funny and insightful book, Dipo Faloyin offers a much-needed corrective. He examines each country's colonial heritage, and explores a wide range of subjects, from chronicling urban life in Lagos and the lively West African rivalry over who makes the best Jollof rice, to the story of democracy in seven dictatorships and the dangers of stereotypes in popular culture.By turns intimate and political, Africa Is Not A Country brings the story of the continent towards reality, celebrating the energy and fabric of its different cultures and communities in a way that has never been done before.'Hilarious, ferocious, generous and convincing. 20 in stock

Book Synopsis"Latinx" (pronounced "La-teen-ex") is the gender-neutral term that covers the largest racial minority in the United States, and the poorest but fastest-growing American group, whose political empowerment is altering the balance of forces in a growing number of states. In this groundbreaking discussion, Ed Morales explains how Latinx political identities are tied to a long Latin American history of mestizaje, translatable as "mixedness" or "hybridity", and that this border thinking is both a key to understanding Latinx cultures and a challenge to America's infamously black-white racial regime.Trade ReviewIn a volume that offers once an survey of histories and contemporary trends of Latinx identity in the United States and a gesture toward a radical political potential predicated on such identity, Morales argues that "the Latinx view of race, inherited from nation-building ideologies that lionized race-mixing in Latin America, poses narratives that challenge and resist" the black-white binary which dominates Anglo-American thinking. -- Spencer Dew * Religious Studies Review; June 2019 *

  • You Are Not Alone: a new way to grieve

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC You Are Not Alone: a new way to grieve

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisNEW STATESMAN, THE TIMES AND EXPRESS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2023 ‘Full of sense, heart and hope . . . the friend you need when you’re grieving’ PHILIPPA PERRY ‘This book is a game-changer. Read it before you need to’ DR KATHRYN MANNIX ‘It’s honest and warm and funny (in all the right places)’ JULIA SAMUEL When Cariad Lloyd was just fifteen, she became the person-whose-dad-had-died; a mess of emotions and questions. She turned to the Five Stages of Grief model for guidance, but found its framework of loss was hard to reconcile with her messy and non-linear experience of grief. In this wise and witty book, Cariad shares her grief road map – a collection of years of profound insights from experts and guests featured on her podcast, Griefcast – to remind us that you cannot do grief wrong. The flexibility of the map acknowledges that no two experiences of grief are the same and assists us in building a life around our grief. So, welcome to the club. We know you didn’t ask to be here. But you will be okay. Because you are not alone. ‘A blackly funny, honest, thought-provoking and compassionate book’ THE TIMES ‘Feels like a warm bath . . . Lloyd's chatty writing style is familiar and funny’ NEW STATESMAN ‘A moving and funny meditation on loss’ OBSERVER Trade ReviewGrief: it is unpredictable and funny and sad, and You Are Not Alone captures this beautifully ... It is a blackly funny, honest, thought-provoking and compassionate book that will be of comfort to all who know loss ... Her chapter on modern mourning is fascinating .... There is useful advice on how to talk to someone who is grieving .... Lloyd encourages us to consider our own death in a chapter that is confronting and important. Most of us don't want to think about it, but doing so could make life much easier for our loved ones ... As the chapters progress, we see her teenage irritation and anger soften into a longing to have known him better. I teared up reading the list of questions she has for him ... This is a book with great heart. As cliched as it might sound, you do feel less alone after reading it ... This book helps to break the silence around something we all experience. ''We live, we die. That's it. Isn't it strange and normal? Isn't it awful and ordinary?'' Exactly. * The Times *This book is a game-changer, a grief companion for our time . . . Practical, kind, honest, generous. Read it before you need to. You can thank me later -- Dr Kathryn Mannix, author of WITH THE END IN MINDWe do not talk enough about grief. Often, it is a lonely path. Cariad Lloyd has made it her life's work to make us feel less alone, like we belong to a club, like our grief is both collective and individual, that there is no right way to remember those no longer with us, and that there is great comfort in talking about grief and death. Told with humanity, humour and honesty, this is a book for all of us, because we will all experience grief at some point in our lives, and this book will make us feel less alone -- Dr Nikesh ShuklaStunning . . . This is a necessary book for all of us, those new to grief, the old hands, or the simply curious to understand. Even though it is about death, it’s a guide book to life -- Aisling BeaIt is the secret desire of many artists to make themselves useful and Cariad has achieved just that. A wise, warm and important book -- Robert WebbA pick-and-mix of insight into loss, filled with wit, warmth and wisdom -- Alan DaviesI love this book. It’s honest and warm and funny (in all the right places), and connects us to our most vulnerable and robust selves. Everyone should read it -- Julia SamuelThe most helpful book that I have ever read about grief…A book that you should read before grief takes over your life…I couldn’t recommend this book highly enough. Keep one with you at all times. At some point you, or someone you love, is going to need it -- Fi GloverThis book is a must for the grieving, the soon to be grieving, for those who want to be with others in their grief and, well, EVERYONE, especially all mental health professionals. Full of sense, heart and hope. A book that will hold you… Like the friend you need when you’re grieving -- Philippa PerryCariad has managed to write a book about the saddest thing in the world, that isn’t sad. Genuinely uplifting, a book that releases a tight valve in all of us -- Dawn O’PorterReading You Are Not Alone felt like slaking a thirst. Gentle, compassionate and wise, it normalises and honours the true, messy scope of grief. It’s the kind of book you want to press into the hands of every grieving person, whether their loss is fresh or longstanding. I loved it -- Katherine MayThe thing about being in the white-heat of grief is that you feel so alone, that nobody else understands, nothing can help. You’re drowning in your snotty grief-soup, unable to find a flotation device. But “You Are Not Alone” now. Cariad is here. She knows you. She knows Grief. She has water-wings in your size. None of us will escape grief. Obviously. So, all of us must read this book. Obviously -- Greg WiseThis is the book that the 14-year-old me needed when my brother died, but it’s also the book I really need now, aged 41 . . . Cariad is an extraordinary writer; generous, curious, honest and deeply empathic. Her book is urgent and necessary, like a friend offering wisdom and unconditional love during the darkest of times. It will be a huge support for people of all ages as they encounter their own journey through grief -- Robert DiamentA book which manages to move, soothe and somehow still raise the spirits -- Geoff NorcottCariad Lloyd has changed the way we speak about grief -- Sara PascoeI want everyone I know to read this book. And everyone I don’t know -- Stevie MartinI wish this book had been around when I was younger. This really is an essential guide to the universal yet completely individual shape that grief takes. It will be a source of genuine comfort and solace for anyone. In fact, everyone should read this -- Felix WhiteKind, wise, and punctuated with perfectly timed comic relief . . . Cariad Lloyd offers us the space to cry, to laugh, and – when we’re ready – to remember . . . Cariad Lloyd finds the perfect words and ways to sit with us even as we sit with our grief, and hold our hands as we heal -- Tara FlynnCariad has such a unique talent for that gentle line between comfort, humour and mind-blowing revelations around grief – and this book is one of the best I’ve read on the subject . . . I want to recommend this book to everyone – because all of our lives will be touched by grief if they haven’t already, and this is the book that will make sense of that in a world that seems senseless -- Poorna BellBeautiful, honest, moving and funny, this book is a vital read for anyone who has been been in, or close to, grief . . . You'll cry, you’ll laugh, you’ll learn . . . Headline Publishing Group The Little Book of Floriography: The Secret

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisRevealing a world of secret messages contained within a single petal.Floriography – the language of flowers – is the ancient art of encoding hidden messages in the type, colour and arrangement of plants, allowing individuals to express emotions and sentiments that they may not be able to articulate through words.Featuring 100 of the most popular and available blooms from around the world, this beautifully illustrated gift book gives the botanical name for each plant, a description of its significance and place in folklore, and the story behind its meaning. It also reveals how floral symbolism has been used over the centuries in literature and art, from Hamlet's Ophelia handing out rosemary 'for remembrance' and pansies 'for thoughts', to Oscar Wilde urging his friends to wear green carnations as a subtle code for homosexuality. The idea that flowers have secret meanings would have been well understood by contemporary audiences – and we are seeing a revival of the practice today. From mimosa – which signifies chastity because its leaves close when touched – to the varied messages encoded within different colours of geraniums, Floriography offers a creative way to convey feelings and can add an extra layer of beauty and significance to a gift of flowers. The flowers in Kate Middleton's wedding bouquet signified love, happiness, gallantry and fidelity. If someone sends you a bouquet of hydrangea and lobelia, beware: they stand for heartlessness and malevolence.Table of ContentsThe Story of Floriography - The fascinating history of the language of flora • Friendship, Love and Romance - Flowers to make your relationships blossom • Health, Wealth and Happiness - Plants for positive energy • Daily Blooms - Flowers for different days of the year • Poison Ivy - A playful guide to the malignant meanings of plants • Botanicals in Art and Literature - From Shakespeare to the pre-Raphaelites, how poets, artist and novelists have said it with flowers.

  • Honour and the Sword: The Culture of Duelling

Signal Books Ltd Honour and the Sword: The Culture of Duelling

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe popularity of the musical, Hamilton, featuring the death of Alexander Hamilton in a duel with Aaron Burr, then Vice President of the United States, has revived interest in duelling, but also aroused incredulity that such events could ever have occurred. Where did the custom originate, and why did it spread so quickly all over Europe and the Americas? Duelling was once commonplace. Prime ministers and poets, artists and journalists, and even some ladies went out to the 'field of honour'. Casanova fought with a Polish nobleman in Warsaw, the Duke of Wellington duelled with an English earl in Hyde Park and the Russian poet Pushkin died in a duel in St Petersburg. There were many enigmas associated with the phenomenon. As well as displaying skills with the sword or the pistol, a duellist had to silence problems of conscience. Could duelling be squared with the commandment against killing one's neighbour? Did the fact that both parties were inspired by a gentlemanly code of Honour make the duel superior to a vulgar brawl? The moral justification of duelling intrigued thinkers and intellectuals. Dr Johnson returned to the issue several times, while Rousseau was baffled by the question. Duels added drama to mediocre novels or plays, but featured in the theatre of Shakespeare and later in the work of such masters as Walter Scott, Conrad, Chekhov and Pirandello. Duelling has been too long regarded as an embarrassing sideline in western culture, but for centuries it was an integral part of history. Joseph Farrell attempts to clarify what the duel actually was and why men ever behaved that way. Exploring the social and cultural forces that encouraged what now seems an extraordinary anachronism, he traces the international evolution of the duel - and its many representations in literature and art - from Renaissance Italy to the whole of Europe, including Britain, and onto the US.Trade Review'This splendid book, rich in examples of courage and folly, provokes thought. Read it once for pleasure. Then ponder its significance in our time of false news and slanderous speech.'--The Scotsman

Book SynopsisBY THE SUNDAY TIMES NO.1 BESTSELLING AUTHORThe perfect gift for anyone who has ever wondered about the unpredictable origins and etymologies of our Christmas customs! For something that happens every year of our lives, we really don''t know much about Christmas. We don''t know that the date we celebrate was chosen by a madman, or that Christmas, etymologically speaking, means Go away, Christ. We''re oblivious to the fact that the advent calendar was actually invented by a Munich housewife to stop her children pestering her for a Christmas countdown. And we would never have guessed that the invention of crackers was merely a way of popularising sweet wrappers. Luckily, like a gift from Santa himself, Mark Forsyth is here to unwrap this fundamentally funny gallimaufry of traditions and oddities, making it all finally make sense - in his wonderfully entertaining wordy way.''Witty and revelatory. Vintage Publishing Haunted Air

Book SynopsisA collection of anonymous Hallowe'en Photographs from America, c.1875 - 1955The roots of Hallowe'en lie in the ancient pre-Christian Celtic festival of Samhain, a feast to mark the death of the old year and the birth of the new. It was believed that on this night the veil separating the worlds of the living and the dead grew thin and ruptured, allowing spirits to pass through and walk unseen but not unheard amongst men. The advent of Christianity saw the pagan festival subsumed in All Souls' Day, when across Europe the dead were mourned and venerated. Children and the poor, often masked or in outlandish costume, wandered the night begging 'soul cakes' in exchange for prayers, and fires burned to keep malevolent phantoms at bay.The photographs in Haunted Air provide an extraordinary glimpse into the traditions of this macabre festival from ages past, and form an important document of photographic history. These are the pictures of the dead: family portraits, mementos of the treasured, now unrecognisable, other. Torn from album pages, sold piecemeal for pennies and scattered, abandoned to melancholy chance and the hands of strangers.

Book SynopsisChristmas is the favourite time of the year for many of us, with present exchanges, food & drink and socialising with friends & family at the top of the agenda. But what are the true origins and meaning of this seemingly inexhaustible celebration? Although most of our current customs only go back a few hundred years – Father Christmas as we know him dressed in red and white much less – there has been a festival at this time in the year for thousands of years. Although these days it is taken to mean the commemoration of the birth of Jesus, the date of December 25 was that of the winter solstice in Roman times, and other cultures have celebrated the darkest winter night for millennia. This book looks at all aspects of what the festive period means for people all over the world, beginning with a history of Christmas that looks at Yule, Nativity and Christmas as well as pagan celebrations. The embodiment of Christmas, Father Christmas, has a whole chapter, and this jolly character we know and love has a long history, not to mention a big bag of presents! But wait – there's myrrh(!): quotes, jokes, sayings and words of wisdom and fun from around the world, as well as fun facts about how, where, when and why we celebrate – and we look at curious customs from around the world.SAMPLE FACT: The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, has been tracking Santa's journey around the world since 1958.Table of ContentsC-history-mas: Most of the current traditions come from the 19th century, but there's been a celebration at the end of the year for as long as history has been reported. Vintage Publishing A Tudor Christmas

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisChristmas in Tudor times was a period of feasting, revelry and merrymaking ‘to drive the cold winter away’. A carnival atmosphere presided at court, with a twelve-day-long festival of entertainments, pageants, theatre productions and ‘disguisings’, when even the king and queen dressed up in costume to fool their courtiers. Throughout the festive season, all ranks of subjects were freed for a short time from everyday cares to indulge in eating, drinking, dancing and game-playing.We might assume that our modern Christmas owes much to the Victorians. In fact, as Alison Weir and Siobhan Clarke reveal in this fascinating book, many of our favourite Christmas traditions date back much further. Carol-singing, present-giving, mulled wine and mince pies were all just as popular in Tudor times, and even Father Christmas and roast turkey dinners have their origins in this period. The festival was so beloved by English people that Christmas traditions survived remarkably unchanged in this age of tumultuous religious upheaval.Beautifully illustrated with original line drawings throughout, this enchanting compendium will fascinate anyone with an interest in Tudor life – and anyone who loves Christmas.Trade Review[A] jewel of a book. -- Tracy Borman * BBC History Magazine, **Books of the Year** *My favourite fireside read on the run-up to Yule… From food and festivities to religion and the origins of customs, this book has it all * Northern Soul, *Christmas Gift Guide 2023* *

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Whatever Happened to Tradition

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe West feels lost. Brexit, Trump, the coronavirus: we hurtle from one crisis to another, lacking definition, terrified that our best days are behind us. The central argument of this book is that we can only face the future with hope if we have a proper sense of tradition political, social and religious. We ignore our past at our peril. The problem, argues Tim Stanley, is that the Western tradition is anti-tradition, that we have a habit of discarding old ways and old knowledge, leaving us uncertain how to act or, even, of who we really are.In this wide-ranging book, we see how tradition can be both beautiful and useful, from the deserts of Australia to the court of nineteenth-century Japan. Some of the concepts defended here are highly controversial in the modern West: authority, nostalgia, rejection of self and the hunt for spiritual transcendence. We''ll even meet a tribe who dress up their dead relatives and invite them to tea. Stanley illustrateTrade ReviewThis is a rich and reflective book, based on wide reading and personal experience. * Literary Review *Whatever Happened to Tradition? is stuffed with marvellous vignettes… the reader is left feeling grateful for the abundance of knowledge and the ebullient conviction with which it is shared. -- Allison Pearson * Telegraph *The writer he most resembles is Roger Scruton… Since Scruton died last year, there is a vacancy for a political philosopher who will defend the traditions of this nation with all his heart and all his considerable brain. I suspect we may have found his successor. -- Allison Pearson * Telegraph *This book is brilliant. It's really radical in a way that all the other stuff that says it's radical is not. It really gives you an idea that there is something else outside this airless bubble of the self we are stuck in today. I find that kind of inspiring. -- Adam Curtis, filmmakerHe persuasively presents tradition as rooting us in the world and in society, and as subtly adaptable. -- Jane O’Grady * The Daily Telegraph *Roger Scruton’s death deprived public discourse of its most intelligent and cogent defender of tradition, but Tim Stanley’s Whatever Happened to Tradition? steps bravely into the breach. * Church Times *Tim Stanley suggests in his engaging way that fidelity to the past determines future happiness — for our civilisation, not just our souls. -- Christopher Howse * The Spectator *The book is warmly recommended...it is full of fascinating fact and anecdotes...it is such a refreshing challenge to the sad and lazy assumptions of our age. * faith.org.uk *Table of ContentsIntroduction PART ONE 1 Defining Tradition 2 The West’s War on Tradition 3 The Invention of Tradition 4 The Uses of Nostalgia PART TWO 5 Hurrah for the Old 6 Tradition and Identity 7 Tradition and Order 8 Tradition and Freedom 9 Tradition and Equality 10 Tradition and Faith Conclusion Notes Acknowledgements Index

    Duke University Press The Hundreds

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn The Hundreds Lauren Berlant and Kathleen Stewart speculate on writing, affect, politics, and attention to processes of world-making. The experiment of the one hundred word constraint—each piece is one hundred or multiples of one hundred words long—amplifies the resonance of things that are happening in atmospheres, rhythms of encounter, and scenes that shift the social and conceptual ground. What''s an encounter with anything once it''s seen as an incitement to composition? What''s a concept or a theory if they''re no longer seen as a truth effect, but a training in absorption, attention, and framing? The Hundreds includes four indexes in whichAndrew Causey, Susan Lepselter, Fred Moten, and Stephen Muecke each respondwith their own compositional, conceptual, and formal staging of the worlds of the book.Trade Review"In Berlant and Stewart’s hands, affect theory provides a way of understanding the sensations and resignations of the present, the normalized exhaustion that comes with life in the new economy. It is a way of framing uniquely modern questions." -- Hua Hsu * The New Yorker *"The seemingly arbitrary parameters Berlant and Stewart put in place act out an illuminating thought experiment for the reader. . . . A haunting and thought-provoking read that asks readers to slow down and take stock of what is in front of them." -- Julia Shiota * Ploughshares *"A roving adventure in critical prose. . . . Berlant and Stewart eschew a literary focal point for a broadly questioning spirit. . . . The point is not to 'track thing into their secret lairs,' or to place them in the 'so-called big picture,' rather, it is to look again, and encourage the reader look again too." -- Michael Caines * TLS *"The Hundreds is playful and loose, it roams and discovers, only to drift elsewhere, but it works: it grounds theory, makes it real." -- Casey Dawson and Christopher Schaberg * Los Angeles Review of Books *"The Hundreds focalizes an intrinsic desire to explore the world’s simplicities as the foundation for the potentiality of the extraordinary. Berlant and Stewart show that, indeed, ordinary life is ordinary and transformative, containing so many possibilities for thinking about who we are in the world, really." -- Matt Morgenstern * Cleveland Review of Books *"The Hundreds, by cultural theorist Lauren Berlant and anthropologist Kathleen Stewart, is at once a bold thought experiment and a radical exploration of reflexive ethnographic writing. . . . The Hundreds is a must read for scholars interested in affect as another register of human experience that exists alongside the psychological and phenomenological." -- Asha L. Abeyasekera * Feminism & Psychology *"As compositions, the hundreds illuminate and obscure, defamiliarize and refamiliarize, reflect and refract (tip of the cap to Volosinov 1973) both their authors and the cultural artifacts that appear in them, and offer a way of archiving cultural moments in ways that acknowledge, even foreground, their affective power." -- Seth Kahn * Anthropological Quarterly *"A speculative and seductive book. . . . The Hundreds asks us to pay attention to the capacious and crucial smallness of our everyday, to slow down and dial in to the richness and frustrations of ordinary encounters as a grounding and creative political practice." -- Elisabeth R. Penguin Books Ltd Sorry for Your Trouble: The Irish Way of Death

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Irish do death differently.Funeral attendance is a solemn duty - but it can also be a big day out, requiring sophisticated crowd control, creative parking solutions and a high-end sound system. Despite having the same basic end-of-life infrastructure as other Western countries, Irish culture handles death with a unique blend of dignified ritual and warm sociability. In Sorry for Your Trouble, Ann Marie Hourihane holds up a mirror to the Irish way of death: the funny bits, the sad bits, and the hard-to-explain bits that tell us so much about who we are. She follows the last weeks of a woman's life in hospice; she witnesses an embalming; she attends inquests; she talks to people working to prevent suicide; she follows the team of specialists working to locate the remains of people 'disappeared' by the IRA; and she visits some of Ireland's most contested graves. She also explores the strange and sometimes surprising histories of Irish death practices, from the traditional wake and ritual lamentations to the busy commerce between anatomists and bodysnatchers. And she goes to funerals, of ordinary and extraordinary people all over the country - including that of her own father. 'I had joined a club,' she writes, 'the club of people who have lost someone very close to them.' And then, with her family, she sets about planning a funeral in the middle of a pandemic.Sorry for Your Trouble sheds fresh, wise and witty light on a key pillar of Irish culture: a vast but strangely underexplored subject. Rich, sparkling and eye-opening, it is one of the best books ever written about Irish life.___________________________'A beautiful, insightful reflection on a very, very peculiar country's approach to the oddest experience of them all' RYAN TUBRIDY'Hugely moving and illuminating. In Sorry for Your Trouble she explores perhaps the most distinctive aspect of its culture with compassion, erudition, wit and a wonderful precision of feeling and expression. This is, paradoxically, an endlessly vivid reflection, not just on Irish life, but on life itself. • Belgium - Culture Smart!: The Essential Guide to

Kuperard Belgium - Culture Smart!: The Essential Guide to

Book SynopsisDon't just see the sights—get to know the people. Belgium has somehow acquired the reputation of being Europe's most boring country—a reputation that is entirely undeserved. But perhaps this bland image is a smokescreen, the conventional exterior hiding a subversive sense of humor, a surreal imagination, and a deep-rooted disdain for authority. Or perhaps it is a camouflage, a way in which Belgium, still overrun—however peacefully—by foreigners, can keep a few of its secrets to itself. Two main factors seem to determine the values Belgians hold and the ways they approach life: the effects of the linguistic divide, and the country's long history of exposure to other cultures through trade, war, and occupation—its experience of being simultaneously very small and very strategically placed. Culture Smart! Belgium will help you navigate these swirling waters. It is for anyone who wants to understand Belgian society and encounter it with sensitivity and poise. We trace the land's turbulent history and look at how the past has shaped the collective and personal values of today's Belgians. We look at the Belgian people at work, at play, and at home, and offer tips to help you get along with the people you will meet, on both sides of the divide, and navigate the new situations that you are likely to encounter. Kuperard Cambodia - Culture Smart!: The Essential Guide to

Book SynopsisDon't just see the sights-get to know the people. Say "Cambodia," and two associations often come to mind: the lost glories of Angkor, and the horrors of the Khmer Rouge. Any understanding of Cambodia today, however, must embrace these opposites, as well as the changing attitudes within the country caused by something of a demographic revolution-today, close to seventy percent of Cambodians are under thirty. In the past, Cambodia was the center of the Khmer empire. For six hundred years it ruled much of what is now Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand from its capital at Angkor. The ruins of the Khmer palaces, temples, and cities testify to its power, wealth, high culture, and engineering prowess, while their subsequent abandonment and long obscurity provide a sobering example of civilization's fragility. Today, Cambodia is negotiating its rich and complex past with the challenges of modernity in a globalized world. Culture Smart! Cambodia is for all those who want to do more than just scratch the surface of this fascinating country. Thoroughly updated, this new edition will enrich your understanding of the land and its people. It explains the key values, attitudes, customs, and traditions that you need to be aware of and provides practical tips and vital information on how to make the most of your time in Cambodia.
