Book SynopsisThe great Norse Myths are among the most dramatic and unforgettable stories in all human history. These fascinating, fantastical tales have inspired centuries of art, culture and literature, including the storytelling of Tolkien, Neil Gaiman, George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones, Wagner's Ring Cycle and Marvel Comics. The Norse Myths takes us on a thrilling journey through the Norse cosmos, from the creation of the world to Ragnarok, the final world-destroying conflict; via the Nine Worlds, and the exploits of the mighty gods and goddesses - mystical Odin, malicious Loki, mighty Thor and more - and their quarrel with the giants. Bringing to life the magical world of monsters and mythical creatures, The Norse Myths also introduces the adventures of humankind: folk heroes and tricksters; Sigmund's great battle in the Volsung Saga; the exploits of Kings and Princes; Viking exploration and settlement of new lands including Iceland, Greenland, America; and Viking life in the Mediterranean and the East. As well as a treasure trove of these epic stories of heroism and cruelty, squabbles and seductions, The Norse Myths is a comprehensive study of their origins, survival and interpretations - as academically important as it is exhilarating.

Hackett Publishing Co, Inc The Saga of the Volsungs: With the Saga of Ragnar
Book SynopsisFrom the translator of the bestselling Poetic Edda (Hackett, 2015) comes a gripping new rendering of two of the greatest sagas of Old Norse literature. Together the two sagas recount the story of seven generations of a single legendary heroic family and comprise our best source of traditional lore about its members—including, among others, the dragon-slayer Sigurd, Brynhild the Valkyrie, and the Viking chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok.Trade Review"This is a wonderfully supple and idiomatic modern translation of the most important account of the legendary Sigurd the Dragon-Slayer and his family in Old Norse-Icelandic literature. Crawford's version is vivid, clear, and exciting, tracing the intrigues, killings, battles, and magic that shape the lives of Sigurd's kindred. Coupled with it is the brilliant sequel, the Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok. Rarely translated into English before, the saga tells of Sigurd's daughter and her husband, the unparalleled Viking king and hero, Ragnar, who is also a dragon-slayer. Lively and fresh, with gripping dialogue and intense scenes of action, the saga has long deserved to be better known. In Jackson Crawford it has found the perfect translator." —Carolyne Larrington, Professor of Medieval European Literature, University of Oxford"A clear, idiomatic English style that also retains the feel of the original is no easy feat, and Crawford succeeds admirably. . . . This translation should serve well those who teach the sagas, their students, and any interested readers, particularly at such a reasonable price." —Adam Oberlin, Princeton University, in The Medieval Review"This is only the second English translation of these two sagas to be published in one volume. . . . The overall aim of the book seems to be the entirely commendable one of inspiring beginners, in which it will no doubt be wholly successful. . . . Crawford's translation of both sagas reads fluently and engagingly. Reading this book has been, for me, an enjoyable and stimulating experience, as it undoubtedly will be for the audience for which it is aimed." —Rory McTurk, Leeds University, in Saga-Book"The book is a gift, especially to beginning readers of the northern mythological literature. It makes its two texts approachable through the use of easy to read contemporary language. It also provides useful tools for the reader to get an overview of the stories through its explanatory matter. The book has a straightforward introduction that provides a nutshell of the sagas, a cast of characters, historical information about the origin of the tales, a brief outline of the chapters, a pronunciation guide, and there is an excellent and useful Glossary of Names and Terms at the end of the book. Crawford also includes notes throughout the text, including recommendations to see relevant passages of his translation of The Poetic Edda: Stories of the Norse Gods and Heroes. . . . I have read the William Morris translation (1870) a few times throughout the scattered years and I wanted to see what a contemporary translation would look like. I wasn’t disappointed. I hope and expect that the Crawford translation will introduce many new readers to the pleasures of its two pieces of world literature." —Phillip Fitzsimmons, in Mythlore

Inner Traditions Bear and Company Runic Book of Days: A Guide to Living the Annual
Book SynopsisA step-by-step guide to working with the runes throughout the year. The Old Norse runes, known as the Elder Futhark, have long joined forces with the cycles of the seasons to offer powerful initiations, guidance, and wisdom. Aligning the sacred festivals, plantings, and harvests of ancient runic calendars with our modern 12-month calendar, Kelley Harrell reveals how the runes can once again offer initiations as well as instruct us on the holy days and creative rhythms of today. Drawing on her more than 25 years of shamanic practice and runic study, Harrell offers a step-by-step primer to work with the runes throughout the year. She explains how the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark follow a seasonal progression in which each stave rules the calendar for a half-month. She explores the meaning of each rune in detail and presents structured runic devotionals for each half-month, interwoven with guidance on how to make the best use of the life force available during each season, as well as runic initiation rituals for the 8 pagan Sabbats, or holy days, such as the Summer Solstice (Litha) and Beltane (May Day).By moving through Nature’s cycle with the runes, each year becomes a reliable and trackable process of personalized growth and spiritual connection. Progressing through the teachings of each stave while honoring the seasons, Harrell’s year with the runes becomes an initiation into a direct relationship with powers of Nature. Trade Review“In her book Runic Book of Days, S. Kelley Harrell has created a path of personal revelation and initiation through the intrinsic powers of the Elder Futhark. Her unique vision offers you a truly fresh way to approach the oracular nature of the runes while providing a way to use their magic to enhance your life. It is a journey through time and nature that can transform you!” * Evelyn C. Rysdyk, author of The Norse Shaman *"Drawing from old runic sources and modern shamanic practices, as well as over two decades of experience, Harrell aligns the classic agricultural calendars of Old Europe as expressed through the runes with our modern Gregorian variety, showing just how universal the wheel of the year can feel when properly attuned and actively experiences. Each rune (and its half-month) is examined and treated as an initiating force with depth and intuitive analysis. Looking to expand your experience of meditation with the Futhark ever-further, or perhaps needing a way to augment your Coven’s calendar with a more heathen feel? This little gem might be for you." * The Witches' Almanac *Table of ContentsForeword by Nigel Pennick Acknowledgments Introduction PART 1 Engaging the Runes 1 History and Origin of the Runes 2 The Runes Tools and Strategies for Rune Work 3 The Staves The Symbolism of the Elder Futhark 4 The Runic Calendar Structure and Sacred Rites PART 2 Living the Runes 5 June 29-July 14 -- Fehu Manifesting the Sacred Self 6 July 14-July 29 -- Uruz Greeting Shadow 7 July 29-August 13 -- Thurisaz and Lammas Finding Personal Divinity 8 August 13-August 29 -- Ansuz Speaking Your Personal Truth 9 August 29-September 13 -- Raidho Telling Your Story 10 September 13-September 28 -- Kenaz and Mabon Meeting the Personal Metaphor 11 September 28-October 13 -- Gebo Giving and Growing 12 October 13-October 28 -- Wunjo Allowing Joy 13 October 28-November 13 -- Hagalaz and Samhain Facing Fear, Finding Faith 14 November 13-November 28 --Nauthiz Embracing Need 15 November 28-December 13 -- Isa Excavating Hidden Life Force 16 December 13-December 28 -- Jera and Yule Finding Tools That Work 17 December 28-January 13 -- Eihwaz Navigating the Personal Path 18 January 13-January 28 -- PerthroConfronting Your Wyrd 19 January 28-February 12 --Algiz and Imbolc Embodying Power 20 February 12-February 27 -- Sowilo Remembering Infinite Divinity 21 February 27-March 14 -- Tiwaz Holding Space 22 March 14-March 30 -- Berkano and Ostara Healing Dues 23 March 30-April 14 -- Ehwaz Meeting Allies 24 April 14-April 29 -- Mannaz Finding Your Tribe 25 April 29-May 14 -- Laguz and Beltane Staying in Flow 26 May 14-May 29 -- Ingwaz Feeding New Consciousness 27 May 29-June 14 -- Othala Being the Present 28 June 14-June 29 -- Dagaz and Midsummer Befriending the Tension of Change 29 Continuing the Cycle Suggested Reading and Resources Notes Glossary Index

Book SynopsisAn in-depth guide to Loki, the Norse trickster god, and Sigyn, the goddess of loyalty; includes instruction on rituals, devotionals, and offeringsTrade ReviewThis is an interesting examination of a controversial figure. Svendsen's prose is familiar, easy to understand, and occasionally hilarious. Moving between solid scholarship and personal experience with ease, this book provides readers with a modern sense of both Loki and Sigyn. Patricia Lafayllve, author of A Practical Heathen's Guide to Asatru. Wait, was I not just sitting in a drinking hall listening to an excited Lokean drinking Jagermeister and telling stories while standing on a table? It certainly feels that way after reading Loki and Sigyn! I laughed, I cried, I found insightful commentary and a good mix of scholarship and gnosis. I also found the main stories - yes, they're very important (and funny)! But there were also lessons about bad decisions, accountability, love, devotion, and compassion as well. Oh, and let's not forget all the lessons on how to honor that fiery boi and his wife (there were plenty of those - don't forget the candy!). 10 out of 10 would recommend (and I don't even usually bother with the guy). Inner Traditions Bear and Company The Return of Odin: The Modern Renaissance of
Book SynopsisA controversial examination of the influence and presence of the Norse god Odin in contemporary history and culture Exploring the influence of the Norse god Odin in the modern world, Richard Rudgley reveals Odin’s central role in the pagan revival and how this has fueled a wide range of cultural movements and phenomena. Rudgley argues that it is Odin and not Jesus Christ who has the single most important spiritual influence in modern Western civilization. He analyzes the Odin archetype--first revealed by Carl Jung’s essay on Wotan--in the context of pagan religious history and explains the ancient idea of the Web--a cosmic field of energies that encompasses time, space, and the hidden potentials of humanity—the pagan equivalent to the Tao of Eastern tradition. The author examines the importance of the concept of wyrd, which corresponds to “fate” or “destiny”. He examines how the concept of subterranean and mythic realms, such as the Hollow Earth, Thule, and Agartha, and mysterious energies like Vril were manifested in both occult and profane ways and investigates key occult figures like Madame Blavatsky, Guido von List, and Karl Wiligut. Rudgley provides pagan analyses of Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings and documents the impact the Odin archetype has had on nationalist and fascist groups in America and Europe. Examining pagan groups in Europe and America that use the Norse template, Rudgley reveals true paganism as holistic and intimately connected with the forces at work in the life of the planet. Showing how this “green” paganism can be beneficial for dealing with the adverse consequences of globalization and the ongoing ecological crisis, he explains how, when repressed, the Odin archetype is responsible for regressive tendencies--a reflection of the unprecedented chaos of Ragnarok--but if embraced, the Odin archetype makes it possible for like-minded traditions to work together in the service of life.Trade Review“In this fascinating work, Richard Rudgley provides a gripping and enlightening guidebook to the ‘lost continent of the European imagination’ as well as a necessary warning about the dangers of letting the ‘Odinic experiment’ get out of hand.” * Gary Lachman, author of Lost Knowledge of the Imagination *“Richard Rudgley understands the god Odin, who goes wherever knowledge is to be found no matter the danger involved. Thus, we find Rudgley delving into many areas of infamy in The Return of Odin because that is where the search leads. Tales of dwarfs and frost giants, of treasure and magic, and of Asgard, home to the gods: Odin the all-father, highest and oldest of the Aesir; his mighty son Thor, whose hammer Mjollnir makes the mountain giants tremble; Loki, wily and handsome, reliably unreliable in his lusts; and Freya, more beautiful than the sun or the moon, who spurns those who seek to control her. Liverpool University Press The Norns in Old Norse Mythology
Book SynopsisThe nornir or norns were a group of female supernatural beings closely related to ideas about fate in Old Norse tradition. Karen Bek-Pedersen provides a thorough understanding of the role played by norns and other beings like them in the relevant sources. Although they are well known, even to people who have only a superficial knowledge of Old Norse mythology, this is the first detailed discussion of the norns to be published amongst the literature dealing with Old Norse beliefs. Surprisingly little has been written specifically about the norns. Although often mentioned in scholarship treating Old Norse culture, the norns are all too often dealt with in overly superficial ways. The research presented in this book goes much deeper in order to properly understand the nature and role of the norns in the Old Norse world view. The conclusions reached by the author overturn a number of stereotypical conceptions that have long dominated our understanding of these beings. The book has a natural focus on Old Norse culture and is especially relevant to those interested in or studying Old Norse culture and tradition. However, comparative material from Celtic, Anglo-Saxon and Classical traditions is also employed and the book is therefore of interest also to those with a broader interest in European mythologies.Trade Review'With The Norns in Old Norse Mythology, Karen Bek-Pedersen offers a very detailed book about nornir as well as other supernatural female figures in Old Norse mythology. It is a high quality piece of research, especially as regards its detailed and accurate close readings of the text sources, which will satisfy both interested beginners and specialised scholars.' Collective Ink Pagan Portals - Loki: Trickster and Transformer
Book SynopsisLoki Laufeyjarson is the famous trickster of Norse Mythology, who brings its pages to life with conflict, humor, and excitement. Far from being just a villain or a prankster, Loki is a god who brings necessary change into the world, transcends boundaries, and shines light on hidden truth. In this book, you will be introduced to Loki and the many masks he wears: whether he appears as the bringer of enlightenment, the traveling companion of the gods, or the ender of worlds. This is also an accessible guide to building a devotional practice with the trickster, where you will learn new ways to honor this often misunderstood deity. Open the door to Loki's mysteries, and prepare to laugh, be challenged, and potentially change your life. 'Pagan Portals - Loki is a bold and necessary look at the Trickster God of the Norse. The author deftly weaves together academic material and personal experience to give the reader a guide not only to better understand this often maligned deity but also to connect directly to him. An unflinching appraisal that offers a great deal of insight into Loki.' Morgan Daimler author of Pagan - Portals Odin and Pagan Portals - Thor.

Book SynopsisExpanding on the radically inclusive practices presented in The Way of Fire and Ice, this next-step book teaches you how to tap into the forces of the Nordic cosmos.Trade Review'Spinning Wyrd carefully and consciously helps readers deepen their practice amid challenging times. With the premise of Radical Heathenry, this inclusive book widens the view of Norse Paganism by looking at the often hard-to-grasp Wyrd, amongst other significant concepts. Informed by extensive research, well-developed modern practices, and a commitment to social justice, this book prepares readers for whatever is fated to happen next.' Irisanya Moon, author of Pagan Portals: The Norns: Weavers of Fate & Magick. 'This book is a journey of exploration through the cosmos as seen with Norse pagan eyes. Ryan Smith invites the reader to encounter the living forces and beings that move through and animate all the nine worlds and to seek wisdom and relationship with each. But perhaps this book's most powerful offering is its insightful framework for understanding our own souls and our interactions with the forces that shape our fates. It's a compass that Norse-centered animists, polytheists, and pagans can turn to for guidance along the path.' Morpheus Ravenna, author and artist. 'Spinning Wyrd is the perfect follow up to The Way of Fire & Ice, taking readers further into the ideas of radical Heathenry in ways that are both thought provoking and practical. Those seeking a Heathenry that is open and diverse, strongly rooted in history but meant for today, and which seeks to connect practitioners not only to Gods but also to the many powers around us understood through animism will appreciate the way this book balances so many potentially conflicting things to form a cohesive whole. I loved the way Smith tackles potentially difficult topics like ecstatic practice with ease, explaining both why engaging with the more esoteric side of Heathenry is important and providing a guide for anyone to do so.' Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Flight of the Vikings
Book SynopsisWhen the full might of Nazi Germany descended without warning upon neutral Norway in April 1940, many brave Norwegians wanted to escape to Britain to join the fight against the occupation of their country. The most natural route to freedom was to take to the cruel North Sea in small boats, following in the ancient traditions of their Viking ancestors. Facing perils of betrayal by collaborators and pursuit by the Gestapo, these brave Norwegians were in flight, but they were absolutely determined to return as avengers of Nazi oppression. For the first time, the stories of these remarkable escapes have been woven together into a single comprehensive Viking saga, set in the social and military context of the Nazi occupation. Extensive research has revealed many new boats and dramatic escapes, with at least 360 boats carrying over 4,000 fugitives now known to have crossed to the Allies. The onward progress of the avenging escapers is followed into the renowned Kompani Linge commandos, the

Cambridge University Press Gods and Humans in Medieval Scandinavia
Book SynopsisThe coming of Christianity to Northern Europe resulted in profound cultural changes. In the course of a few generations, new answers were given to fundamental existential questions and older notions were invalidated. Jonas Wellendorf''s study, the first monograph in English on this subject, explores the medieval Scandinavian reception and re-interpretation of pre-Christian Scandinavian religion. This original work draws on a range of primary sources ranging from Prose Edda and Saxo Grammaticus'' History of the Danes to less well known literary works including the Saga of Barlaam and the Hauksbók manuscript (c.1300). By providing an in-depth analysis of often overlooked mythological materials, along with translations of all textual passages, Wellendorf delivers an accessible work that sheds new light on the ways in which the old gods were integrated into the Christian worldview of medieval Scandinavia.Trade Review'… useful and interesting work relevant for researchers …' Luke John Murphy, Speculum: A Journal of Medieval StudiesTable of Contents1. Retying the bonds; 2. The hierarchy of disbeliefs in antipagan polemics; 3. Universalist aspirations in Hauksbók; 4. The Byzantine Gods of Saxo Grammaticus; 5.
