In this beautiful guide she explores woodlands in a variety of interpretations, from tangled groves and ancient trees to fiery leaves and springtime orchards. With simple instructions and easy-to-follow demonstrations throughout, the book draws inspiration from forest poetry, birdsong and folklore. There’s practical advice on working outside, experimenting with mixing colours (especially greens), playing with water effects, using salt and granulation, mark-making and spattering with found objects such as leaves and twigs, creating texture with gesso and working with collage. Other techniques include working with oak gall ink and charcoal, and how to incorporate words, text and photo transfer. The book is illustrated throughout with stunning examples of Blockley’s colourful, expressive work, including a case study of her own woodland garden. Search Press Ltd Sea & Sky in Acrylics: Techniques & Inspiration

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisDave White introduces the simple but effective techniques that he uses to paint stunning, dramatic seascapes with beautiful and realistic skies. He demonstrates spattering, blending backgrounds, painting horizons, finger painting clouds and foam. There is expert advice on the anatomy of waves and how they rise and collapse, creating ripples, surf, foam and spray. Clear instructions show how to paint effective reflections and beaches to improve your seascapes. The sky section shows effective techniques for painting all types of cloud, with some innovative methods such as tipping up the surface to let dilute paint run, to create cirrus clouds. Dave's method of creating depth in sea, beach and sky using lines projected from the vanishing point will radically improve readers' seascapes. There is a section of moods and sunsets full of beautiful, dramatic examples. Finally three step by step projects show how to paint a beach panorama with a rolling wave, a spectacular sunset over a calm sea and waves crashing on rocks.Trade ReviewIt's difficult for many painters to achieve realistic looking skies and water. Dave demonstrates how to paint both so that you can refine your skills. Simple techniques that any can follow. Take a closer look at waves and cloud formations, I really enjoyed these two sections. There are three step-by-step projects and examples of finished work. Discover how to add a little drama to your acrylic paintings. * Karen Platt- yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *Few artists can resist the temptation to introduce a bit of drama when it comes to painting the sea, and Dave White is no exception. It is, after all, a bit boring if you just paint flat calm and there’s nothing like a good storm to get the juices flowing. Add a nice ripe sunset and you’ll be getting through your dark greens, rich blues and deep reds like there’s no tomorrow! It’s perhaps unfair to start a review like that as this is one of the most thorough and useful books on painting seascapes that I’ve seen in a long time. Dave White is more than sound on achieving that tricky balance between solidity and fluidity in breaking waves and I particularly like his trick of using gulls that skim the surface (as they do) to give scale. His clouds are similarly light, fluffy and ethereal without looking half-hearted or like clumps of cotton wool stuck onto a Cerulean wash. For all that, it’s the drama that’ll strike you on a quick flick through, but you shouldn’t let it put you off. The sea is dramatic and, as I hinted earlier, it should be. Some of the treatments here are a bit over the top for me but, equally, they might be just what you want. In terms of technique and presentation, though, this one’s hard to beat. * Artbookreview.net *January 2016 Painting the sea is one of the greatest challenges for the artist. Constantly in motion, it has far more substance than other types of water that simply flow, or are completely still. To freeze a moment in time while still maintaining that sense of fluidity is not an easy thing to do. Almost all books on painting the sea tend at some point to be a trifle dramatic, and this is no exception. Dave white includes night-time scenes, sunsets and the last rays breaking through backlit clouds, even a helicopter rescue. On waves, spray, translucency and the rather neat trick of including low flying gulls to provide scale, Dave is solidly sound. There’s plenty of variety demonstrations and good solid instruction. * The Artist *Living near the coast in Hampshire, Dave White finds constant inspiration from the sea and skies around him, and in his latest book, sea and sky in acrylics, he shares with us some of the essential elements off of capturing a subject that is constantly moving and changing. Using his preferred medium of acrylics he opens the book with a brief description of the materials you will need, then moves swiftly on to colour and the specific colours you will need to follow the demonstrations in this book, including colour mixes for sky, sea, rocks and beaches for example. The first part concentrates on the sea, describing the techniques to create the rising and falling waves, show wind direction, ripples splashes and reflections. The middle section looks at the sky; clouds, moods and sunsets; then the rest of the book is devoted to projects – a beach panorama, a sunset and waves crashing on the rocks – all with excellent step-by-step diagrams and clear photography. * The Leisure Painter *Table of ContentsIntroduction Materials Colour and opacity Techniques SEA: The splash zone A rising wave A falling wave Surf and ripples Reflections Beaches Wind direction SKY: Selecting a vanishing point Clouds Moods and Sunsets PROJECTS: Beachcomber The Heavens Declare Barton Corner

Book SynopsisMaster artist and best-selling author David Bellamy shares with you his techniques, ideas and approach to painting his beloved landscape throughout the year. A revised and expanded edition of David Bellamy's Winter Landscapes in Watercolour, David looks at each season in detail and explores the challenges and surprises they present to the landscape artist. Also covered are learning techniques for seasonal effects such as rendering hoar frost on trees; misty and atmospheric effects; injecting rogue colours to add excitement to your work; how to tackle a variety of tree branches for different species; depicting light branches against dark backgrounds; altering the composition to suit your needs, and so much more.Trade ReviewBuilth Wells artist releases new watercolour book. A highly regarded artist, writer and tutor has released a new book detailing his techniques and ideas for painting his beloved landscape throughout the year. David Bellamy, who lives in Builth Wells, has written Landscapes through the Seasons in Watercolour, published by Search Press. A revised and expanded edition of David Bellamy's Winter Landscapes in Watercolour, David looks at each season in detail and explores the challenges and surprises they present to the landscape artist. In the fully illustrated book, David explores, through painting, the beautiful landscapes across the UK including those in his own area in Powys. David said: "Many of my books include scenes of Powys, and my new book has quite a number.” "Of all the counties in Britain, Powys is probably the least well-known for its outstanding beauty, outside the Brecon Beacons national park boundaries, and it's a great privilege to live here and record its glorious scenery." Through Landscapes through the Seasons, David shares his techniques for creating seasonal effects, such as rendering hoar frost on trees, creating realistic looking foliage, limiting the colour palette to create mood and how to give your painting misty and atmospheric impact. David also lays out what the best materials to use are in a variety of different situations and the varying ways the artist can handle a paint brush to give a desired effect. A full-time artist and author, David has written over 15 books illustrated with his paintings, and eight DVDs on his techniques in watercolour have been produced by APV films. David paints mainly in watercolour, specialising chiefly in mountain, wild coast, Arctic, and desert scenery. He is also currently working on a book about the Middle East. David said: "My sketching adventures have led to encounters with polar bears and walrus, among other creatures in remote fjords, falling over a crocodile in East Africa, taking painting groups into the Himalayas and the Andes, and exploring deep into the Sahara Desert.” “Even though they smell a bit and make rather rude noises, the bull walrus is one of the most considerate models I have ever sketched. In Nepal, one student managed a superb watercolour sketch of Everest only to get it eaten by a yak as it was drying on a wall” “It has been a great privilege to meet so many wonderful people in so many of these wild locations. Powys has also given me many interesting moments, especially when sketching underground in excruciatingly challenging positions." Through his painting and writing, David also hopes to bring about greater awareness of the threats to the natural environment and is particularly active in conserving wild areas. David also occasionally runs painting courses at Caer Beris Manor Hotel in Builth Wells but has not been able to run any this year due to the pandemic. The events usually attract people from many parts of the world including Japan and the USA. Locally, David exhibits paintings at the Ardent Gallery in Brecon. -- Luke Williams * Brecon & Radnor Express *Here the popular artist and best-selling author David Bellamy looks at each season in detail and shares with us how to tackle landscapes when faced with their many challenges. Specific techniques are explained in detail, such as how to create musty effects or render hoar frost on trees, and there's useful advice on composition, making the most of your subject and portraying atmosphere in watercolour. The Moors in Summer, Winter Mountains, After the Spring Shower and a Late Autumn Waterfall are just some of the subjects included in this eminently practical book by a master artist. * Leisure Painter *The paintings were lovely, just looking at the artwork was a pleasure. I found the instructions good, the instructions and serial progress photos should make it possible to produce something satisfactory to even a first time watercolour painter. Overall pleased with this book -- Connie Kiernan * Amazon *The idea of a book about painting the seasons is not new, but rarely has it been handled so well, and with such relevance as here. It is perhaps such an obvious theme that subject matter often becomes second rather than first thought, and previous books have lacked focus as a result. The arrangement of this entrancing guide will come as no surprise, though the start point of summer perhaps points to an intended earlier publication date. The material for winter is adapted from the 2014 David Bellamy's Winter Landscapes in Watercolour, but is integrated nicely, pointing to the care that has gone into the writing and production. There are plenty of examples and demonstrations. David explains how shapes, light, colour and atmosphere all contribute to the look and feel both of the work itself and the ways in which it needs to be approached and presented in a painting. -- Henry Malt * Leisure Painter - January 2021 *This is a book that'll last you all year round. David demonstrates not just the broader vistas, but quiet corners and details such as trees, buildings, waterfalls, animals, trees and flowers. You'll discover how the shapes of natural subjects change with each turn of the season, and David provides examples for everything, as well as full demonstrations that show how images develop in their own individual ways. This is a thorough guide in the company of a popular and experienced teacher who makes working with watercolour a delight. * SAA *This is an expanded version of David’s Winter Landscapes which appeared in 2014. It’s therefore no surprise that this is the season that gets the greatest coverage. Overall, on a back-of-the-envelope calculation, about two-thirds is new material. For a ten quid paperback, that’s not exactly daylight robbery if you have the previous book (which, as one of David’s super-fans, you will). If this is all new to you, be assured that the integration is good and you won’t be able to see the joins. Search Press are very good at this kind of thing and the progress is seamless. The whole thing is sound and well executed, with the demonstrations and overall quality of work fully up to the standard you’d expect from David. So, anyway, this is as thorough a guide to painting outdoors at all times of the year and in all weathers as you could wish. At 96 pages, it’s practically concise, but there’s no wasted space and it feels a lot larger. David isn’t just a great painter, he’s a great distiller of information and the way it’s presented. Do you get the impression I’m telling you to buy this? Good. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Materials 8 Basic brush techniques 12 Summer 14 Lakeland Waterfall 20 Moor in Summer 30 Autumn 36 Late Autumn Waterfall 42 Winter 48 Winter Mountains 56 Farm in Snow 71 Spring 78 After the Spring Shower 82 Planning paintings 88 Further techniques 92 Index 96

They’ve got very good at this latterly and, rather than obvious joins where one book ends and another begins, the whole thing is now seamless. The material may not be new, but it’s still sound and the reproduction is as fresh as it ever was, so this isn’t resurrecting a corpse but bringing excellent material to a potential new audience at a very affordable price. As well as some technical pieces on things like perspective and composition, demonstrations from popular authors cover trees, water, snow, buildings and so on (and on). If you have other books by these authors, you’d need to check for duplication but, equally, there’s so much here, you probably won’t be getting too much cross-over. If you only have a small library and are on a budget into the bargain, you could do a great deal worse than invest in this. * Artbookreview.net *July 14 This new compilation offers a comprehensive guide to painting landscapes in watercolour, showing the results achievable with very different painting styles. You'll find techniques including wet-in-wet, dry brush and lost and found as well as hints and tips that will hep you master this challenging subject. -- The SAA * The SAA Catalogue 19/20 *August 2017 Sadly, this is going to be my last review of a new Terry Harrison book. His death left a huge hole in the world of art instruction and many readers are going to be asking where they will go now. Terry was one of the best explainers and his relaxed style of both painting and demonstrating made his results look, while easy, not too easy. You think, 'with a bit of effort, I could do that too' and the real secret is you can. Terry always gave a polished performance but there was never any sleight of hand, no secrets he kept to himself. Follow the instructions, maybe even use his own range of brushes (they really do what they promise) and the results will follow. He many be gone, but there's a substantial legacy of books and articles that we can refer to for many years to come. This new book was one he most wanted to write. Given his free choice of topic, it was the one he chose and I've been told he saw the proofs and was delighted by the result. Snow is one of the hardest things to part, harder even than water, which is all about reflections. Snow looks white, but isn't. It's blue, it's grey and it's every colour in between. It obscures familiar shapes but creates new ones and has a structure and perspective all of its own. All the techniques are here, along with exercises and demonstrations that cover tracks, trees, mountains, water, buildings and much else. There are even some well wrapped figures and one snowman! Snow is an impermanent thing, but Terry gives it the substance you'd expect. It's both ironic and typical of him that Terry chose to subtitle this 'the easy way'. As we all know, there is no quick or easy way to paint and it's a private joke between us and the author that there might be. This, though, is Terry saying 'trust me' and very gently showing you the way without leading. If it was mountaneering, he'd be holding the rope, but still letting you do the climb. He may be gone, but all the belays are still there. * The Artist *November 2017 Terry Harrison who sadly died earlier this year, has left a huge legacy to amateur painters though his teaching books and DVDs. Painting Watercolour Snow Scenes the Easy Way is the last book Terry wrote for Search Press and is certain to be every bit successful as those that have gone before. Dealing with that most difficult of subjects, snow, Terry shares his techniques on how to capture it in watercolour using clear and easy-to-follow instruction, and his own collection of brushes specifically designed for beginners to achieve results quickly. Book SynopsisRenowned watercolourist David Bellamy shares his passion for painting seas and shorelines in this inspiring and practical book. There is advice on finding subjects and painting the different moods of the sea; rocks, crags and cliffs; adding figures and animals into your artworks; as well as an in-depth look at the painting and sketching techniques required. David's extensive travels mean that seas and shorelines from all over the world appear in the paintings. Trade ReviewWonderfully informative with clear instruction. Helpful advice for a novice or more experienced painter -- Pam C Smith * Customer review *An informative book showing great techniques for painting seas, boats, shorelines & cliffs. I especially gained a lot from David’s use of other materials used to enhance a painting. Applying netting to paint a lobster pot is something I have enjoyed with acrylics, but, will use for Watercolours as well. His explanation of painting skies was eloquent and I will be experimenting with them all. He encourages playing with paint and techniques - it’s only paper after all! I also enjoy mixing paint on the paper and letting the paint do its thing. I would have liked David to mention more about which colours he uses in his examples. The 4 step by step painting are explained so well. His illustration of painting throughout the book are inspirational. I will certainly be recommending this book to fellow Artists. -- Margot Cornish * Customer review *Popular artist, tutor and Leisure Painter contributor, David Bellamy, inspires us to paint seas and shorelines in all their moods in his eagerly awaited book Seas & Shorelines in Watercolour. Both practical and inspiring, David gives advice on finding suitable subjects, composition, how to tackle specific coastal features from all over the world, and how to add figures and birds to your paintings. There's plenty of in-depth information about painting and sketching techniques throughout. * Leisure Painter, July 2019 *This is David’s best book in a long time and his Arctic trip seems to have rekindled his love of all things rugged. It tells the story of the littoral – the point where land and sea meet. Astonishingly, although there have been books on painting the sea and on coastal scenes, this moment of transition has largely passed the instructional book market by. It’s possible that this is because margins are always hard to define – they’re small and tend to vanish when you look at them. So, is this a book about nothing at all? Well, no, of course it isn’t. What David has done is to combine the two conventional approaches – sea and land – and show you how they inextricably interact. So, you get waves both crashing and lapping on cliffs and beaches, harbour villages clinging to rocky slopes that teeter down to the water’s edge, as well as boats, buildings, birds and people. There’s also a nicely complete narrative to the book’s construction. You don’t just get a series of unconnected exercises and demonstrations, but rather the story of how the coastline connects land to water and the margin to itself, creating a string of scenes and opportunities. It’s as thrilling as it is informative and the results are stunning. * Artbookreview.net *David Bellamy's Seas & Shorelines in Watercolour There are many guides to painting seas and coastlines. It sounds like a slim subject, David has managed to wring an extraordinary amount of detail out of it without stretching a point beyond its limits. There are waves and breakers, cliffs, rocks and beaches. There are also, however, buildings, boats, birds and people, which what makes this such a comprehensive work. It is worth adding that the execution is amongst David's finest, making this, in its own quiet way, one of his best books. It is packed with information, both technical and creative, as well as examples, ideas and demonstrations. The sheer variety of material is breathtaking and the quality of the work, as well as the instruction, is first class. * The Artist *This is a book about painting that often-neglected area where the sea and land meet. It's complex and presents many and varied challenges that offer all kinds of exciting, creative possibilities. The idea of the shoreline, and its existence, are obvious the moment you start to think about it, yet most books just allow it to sort of happen. No more. This is one of David's finest books and he takes every opportunity to demonstrate some virtuoso painting, as well as explain what he's doing and- most importantly- how he's doing it. You'll find waves, rocks, cliffs, boats, buildings, birds and people here. Gentle waves lap on sandy shores, heavy breakers pound beetling crags and all kinds of craft bob gently or fight the pull of currents. David paints in all weathers and conditions and he'll show you not just how to paint a boat that has all the correct dimensions, but how to place it in the water so that it sits naturally. He'll explain centres of interest, perspective and recessions, as well as how to create a sense of depth and give your work real impact. There's a mass of information here and it's hard to believe there are only 96 pages, but David is so clear that he can explain in a single page things that would take other artists a whole chapter. * Paint Magazine *Regular readers will know I believe watercolour painting translates well to silk painting. David Bellamy is a renowned watercolour artist, Seas & Shorelines is well written and superbly full of his paintings. He generously passes on hit tips and techniques to his readers. Monoprinting, is used to magically achieve a lobster pot, plus other tips to create texture. Step-by-step detail is given to create wave structure, from gentle surf to monstrous walls of water. I love the chapter on drawing boats, made to look so easy I want to paint one. There are charming little thumbnail sketches, paintings of dramatic cliffs and peaceful harbours. I particularly like a small painting called 'Puffin Secrets' in the Sea Bird section. There are several step by step exercises, easy to follow and an excellent tutorial for adopting a painting style. * International Journal of the Guild of Silk Painters *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Materials 8 Working with watercolours 12 Painting coastal features 20 Maidenhall point 40 A Day by the sea 46 Composition 52 Crail harbour 60 figures & birds 66 Lonely Cormorant 72 All at sea 78 Painting on holiday 86 Mykonos Harbour 90 Index 96

Prestel The Alps: In Panoramic Paintings

    14 in stock

Book SynopsisAs downhill skiing became popular in 20th-century Europe, resorts in the Austrian, German, French, and Swiss Alps commissioned paintings of their ski runs to turn into maps. The best of these paintings are now featured in this book showing the artists’ ability to combine technical virtuosity, geographic information, and creative flair. The undoubted master of panoramic map painting is H. C. Berann, and many examples of his works are shown in this beautiful volume, along with a select handful of artists from throughout Europe. Detailing scenes of the Alpine range from Slovenia to France, each of these images was created by hand from aerial photography, mostly shot by the artists on helicopter rides through the mountains. The paintings themselves cleverly combine multiple perspectives so that all trails, terrain, and mountain features are visible. In these exquisite reproductions, the paintings have been stripped of all references to the ski trails, allowing viewers to focus entirely on the beauty of the colours, composition, and detail. A joy to study and savour, these dramatic and vivid paintings recall a time when the human hand was the best means of translating the Alps’ towering beauty to the general public.

Book SynopsisArtists wishing to capture the excitement and power of the sea in their artwork will find this book invaluable. Judith Yates uses a mix of traditional and more experimental techniques to create her dynamic seascapes, all of which are explained in clear, step-by-step sequences, annotated examples and Judith's stunning artworks. With sections on colour, composition, and creating atmosphere, this book is a comprehensive approach to painting the tumultuous ocean with a mix of acrylics, watercolour and acrylic inks. Judith's varied, mixed media approach gives this book wide appeal to watercolour and acrylics artists looking to expand their creative horizons. This book demystifies all aspects of painting the sea, including details on the form and anatomy of a wave; bringing light, atmosphere and drama into the sky; and choosing colours to create a mood. It also provides a great source of inspiration to artists who are drawn to the sea as a subject for their own paintings.Trade ReviewLose yourself in the excitement and power of seascapes with Judith Yates' latest release Dynamic Seascapes. With sections on colour, composition, and creating atmosphere, this book is a comprehensive approach to painting the tumultuous ocean with a mix of acrylics, watercolour and acrylic inks. Judith uses a mix of traditional and more experimental techniques, and this combined with her mixed media approach means this is perfect for anyone looking to expand their creative horizons. * Crafts Beautiful * Social media gets a bad press. However, it was also responsible for the genesis of this book. The publishers of Leisure Painter and The Artist magazines put one of Judith's pictures on Twitter. I thought it looked interesting and decided to investigate further. It quickly became apparent that she is one of the best seascape artists I'd seen for a long time, so I suggested that Search Press might like to talk to her. And here, a couple of years later, we are. Water is one of the hardest subjects to paint. It's hardly ever static, has no real substance and no colour of its own, yet it presents in many different moods, almost all of them related to movement and surroundings. So, how do you represent that in a single image? Well, that's what the book is all about. The subtitle is "how to paint seas and skies with drama and energy" and it has that in spades. Working in watercolour, acrylic, ink and mixed media, Judith will show you how to capture all the forms and moods of the sea, from a calm evening estuary to storm-blown waves breaking on a rocky shore. Although water is the primary subject, Judith does not forget the shorelines, landscapes and of course skies that make up a complete seascape. She'll show you how light both affects the appearance of water and is affected by it through refraction and reflection. She'll also demonstrate ways of capturing the solid appearance of a breaking wave and how to create the sense of power and movement that are essential to giving your image a feeling of being anything but static and two-dimensional. There are plenty of examples, exercises and demonstrations as well as explanations of the way water behaves in just about every situation. The book is every bit as exciting as its subject. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net * Colourful and inspiring. This book is packed full of beautiful colour paintings using the artist's preferred water based paints and acrylics, each with a handy description explaining how the effects were achieved. There are chapters covering observation and materials followed by a very useful section on colour mixing and palettes to create mood and atmosphere. It describes how to first understand the sea with a section on capturing light through waves and how to paint the swell of the sea. There are some good ideas about using different brush and palette knife strokes and some clever tricks to give texture to your painting along with chapters on composition and foreground extras. There are also two detailed step-by-step paintings that you can follow. -- Lyla Horley * Amazon * In her new book, Dynamic Seascapes, Judith Yates demystifies all aspects of painting the sea and shows you how to start painting your own successful seascapes full of atmosphere and drama. Judith is a professional artist and runs painting workshops from her home studio as well as tutoring art holidays in the Dordogne so she understands many of the problems faced by artists trying to capture a volatile environment. A mixture of traditional and more experimental techniques are employed and clearly explained in step-by-step sequences, using a range of media, including acrylic inks. There's detailed information on how to capture form and anatomy of a wave, as well as ways to use colour and light to add drama to the scene. Step-by-step projects include a wild seascape and shimmering mist, which will inspire you to create dynamic seascapes of your own. * Leisure Painter * Most "how to" books I've come across tend to have step-by-step instructions, but don't necessarily explain why a particular technique is used. In this book however, Judith Yates goes into detail on the paints, surfaces and techniques, so you can learn the skills to paint your own seas as well. I've never been overly confident on mixing paints to get the exact colours I need, but Judith even includes a section on mixing for subtle tones, so you aren't left floundering. The two step-by-step projects break down what looks like a "that's beyond my skill level" painting into much easier steps, where it feels like I can actually end up with something that looks like a dynamic sea at the end! Overall I think this is a fantastic book, and it's also inspired me to try painting on different surfaces rather than just sticking with canvas. * Amazon * There's an old adage that you can never step in the same river twice. It could also be said that you can never actually see a wave. It is, after all, just a movement, albeit one given form by that least and most solid of substances: water. As a form, it's constantly changing and it's that change that makes it what it is. To paint a wave, therefore, requires the artist to freeze an infinitely small moment while also conveying the sense of motion and drama that a wave produces. Judith meets this seemingly impossible challenge head-on in watercolour and acrylic, explaining techniques both of creation and application, She considers drama, serenity, light and reflections as well as skies, buildings and landforms. This is an exciting and thoroughly practical guide to painting seascapes that covers all the moods of the sea and a huge variety of ways to depict them. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 My inspiration 8 Materials 14 Colour 24 Understanding the sea 32 Mark-making 40 Expression and dynamism 50 Wild seascape - Step-by-step project 70 Shimmering mist - Step-by-step project 84 Composition 96 Compositional basics 98, Point of view 100, Creating drama 104, Skies and light 110, Foreground: added elements 116, Texture, tricks and illusions 122 Creating mood and atmosphere 128 Elements of atmosphere 128, Stormy raging seas 130, Misty, ethereal atmosphere 132, Calm, shimmering waters 134, Dreamy atmosphere 136, Brooding mystery 138, Dreamy nostalgia 140 Afterword 142 Index 144

It has some amazing photographs that make the book interesting to look at and the paper is very good quality printing. One of my favourite parts is all of the ideas to use unusual materials that I’ve taken inspiration from in helping students I work with in a secondary school and in my own crafts at home. I highly recommend this book and look forward to getting more of Amanda’s published works. The book has very easy to follow steps and information on how to develop each medium into your work effectively. -- Linda-Gordon Campbell * Customer review *A brilliant book for a stitcher who wants to learn using mixed media, excellent descriptions of the materials and their uses, with a good step by step guide in pictures to follow. Very informative on how to sketch your ideas when on location and how to transfer them into stitch and varied materials. -- Lyn Rochester * Customer review *I'm one of those lucky people living by the sea and enjoy walking on the beach almost daily. I take thousands of photos on my walks, as the sea is never boring. This book is exactly what I was looking for to encourage me to venture into the world of textile art beyond just photography. From opening the first pages I was gripped by this book. Of course the photographs are two dimensional but the photographs in this book are almost tactile and i just had to stroke them. The use of acrylic paint on stitched fabric might be a total novelty to many stitches as it is to me so I'm looking forwards trying that technique soon. I've picked up lots of tips and I'm still on the first chapter! Never heard of CMC thickener and now I can't wait to try it. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to start or improve their artistic stitching and explore outside one's comfort zone. Amanda's instructions are clear and encouraging exploration from simple mark making, creating personalised sketchbooks to various sources of inspiration. She explains the basic principles of composition, use of colour and stitches without being prescriptive. She gives plenty of examples and ideas for exploration. And now for the exciting part of the book - the projects. There are four projects all explained step by step but leaving the reader with the freedom to create a very personal piece of textile art The possibilities are endless. Each project leads you through the stages of processes but gives you the freedom to explore and create an unique piece of work if one wishes so. I found the chapter on creating dynamism very interesting. Amanda explains how to achieve a sense of movement and I feel empowered with knowledge to try her techniques and explore textile art even further than I ever dared. -- Mariola Beata Smith * Customer review *A beautiful textile art book, full of information from where the author finds inspiration, what tools to use and basic techniques to stage by stage photographic and written instructions to create stunning projects. The illustrations are clear and useful for practical tasks. The book is inspirational to embroiders like myself or other kinds of textile artists. -- Pauline Pritchard * Customer review *This book more than lived up to the promise of the cover. Every image conjures up the taste of salt, the dampness of foam and the colours of the sea. This is a book for beginner and expert alike. She offers, not just a list of tools and materials needed to create such images, but the reasons for using each in differing circumstances. Many examples use found or recycled materials, extending the experience beyond the craft place. She shares the stages of her work from the sketch books she uses in the field to the building up of layers. With this multi-media approach, Amanda uses a mix of exercises and mark making to encourage experimenting with materials. There are projects described step by step, but Amanda also points out that working from your own experience, your own sketches or photographs, will produce more personal pieces with a greater sense of involvement. I can’t wait to put some of her ideas into practice and I am sure that I will refer to this book time and again. Amanda Hislop writes that she sets out to “create an atmospheric sense of place” in her artwork. She does not disappoint. -- Ann Williams * Customer review *If you like to paint and stitch, which many Silk Painters do, this is the book for you. Not into sewing, then the interpretation will capture your imagination. Amanda Hislop usese a restricted palette of blues, greys and ochres to create wonderful seascapes, working with sketchbooks from location visits. An extensive use of mark making, thumbnail sketches and moodboards leads to translating mark into stitch. This book is a lively interpretation of sea, shore, rocks and shells, taking note of mood and atmosphere. I have looked at this book many times and each time find something new that triggers ideas for a new painting. The colour palette certainly ensures the mind will consider new colours. Most of us love the sea, visiting it through another's eyes is exciting. -- Margaret Dunning * International Journal of the Guild of Silk Painters *The coast is a special place for many people, evoking memories of childhood vacations or time spent admiring its beauty. This latest entry in Search Press’ Stitched Textiles series explores one artist’s love affair with the seaside and how she creates pictures that express it in paint and thread. I always enjoy the books in this series, as I love the way that each book not only shows how to do it but gives an insight into an artist’s vision and methods of working. Everybody’s style is different, and a good primer will give the tools and understanding to do it yourself, but also see how the author does it. This is not a book about wearable, washable textiles but the sort of art you can hang on the wall so the list of materials includes things like different types of paper, many with a good wet strength. Reading through the lists of items Ms Hislop uses was fascinating, as it includes various types of wax, gauze and many other unusual things. Seeing them put through their paces to create art was quite an education, as was seeing the sketchbooks the artist makes of marks and patterns, and having a go at some of the exercises. There are chapters on her use of colour, composition rules, how she uses a sewing machine to free motion stitch and how to turn those sketch book marks into stitches. Other chapters look at dividing a page into sea, sky and shore and creating a series of pictures, working with texture and making the horizon your focal point. After all this learning it is time to have a go at some projects and there are four of these, interspersed with a look at how to get certain effects right. These include atmosphere, creating a sense of movement and items found on the shoreline. Each section has plenty of examples and the projects have the type of staged photographs Search Press do so well, and which give even a beginner a chance at making a decent fist of it. This is a very inspiring book that will give anybody many ideas to explore. If you cannot find a good range of embroidery and needlecraft materials locally try http://www.searchpress.com for a list of suppliers. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *The latest in this excellent Stitched Textiles series is Amanda’s first book showcasing her love of the sea as inspiration and packed with examples of her work. For anyone who loves the ever-changing moods of the sea and coastlines, then this is the book for you. Amanda shows us how to use a wide range of materials, including paints and papers, fabrics and threads, demonstrating how colour and texture can produce the effect we might wish to portray. Amanda enjoys depicting not just the sea and sky but the flotsam and jetsam of the seashore, including shells, pebbles, rocks and fossils. She guides us through the processes with four step-by-step projects, using a mixed-media approach, encouraging the reader to create their own satisfying interpretation of a favourite coastal area. Highly recommended. * East Kent Embroiderers' *Who doesn't love the sea? And the possibilities to create textile work from this natural wonder are endless. Amanda Hislop shares her wonderful techniques and inspiration in this latest Stitched Textiles publication from Search Press. Amanda's approach uses exercises to build up marks in a sketchbook and there are a few exercises to get you looking and starting to build up a set of references to use in your textile work. She guides you, even if you're not comfortable with drawing, and this section is a great help for loosening up! Composition is discussed in quite some detail to make you think about the balance between sea and sky, how much detail you want to show and takes you through basic principles to achieve a balanced picture. The book then goes on to talk about colour and how to approach the changes of light in a seascape. Developing the mark-making theme, Amanda guides us through doodling with your sewing machine to add line and texture to a textile piece. Again, there are exercises to walk you through the processes. As with the other books in this series, this book offers you the chance to follow four step-by-step projects to develop your skills before embarking on your own seascapes. Book SynopsisFor more than three decades, Wang Wusheng has been captivated by the beauty of Mount Huangshan, also known as the Yellow Mountains. Located in the southern part of the Anhui province in northern China, Mount Huangshan has often been described as the world''s most beautiful and enchanting mountain. Over the centuries this mountain with its 72 peaks has been the subject of Chinese landscape painters, whose singular works are so haunting it seems impossible that these mountains exist in nature. Inspired by the legacy of these paintings, Wang Wusheng has sought to portray this scenic wonder. As shown in the collection of 90 photographs in this extraordinary volume, here are mist-shrouded, granite peaks emerging from an ever-changing veil of clouds, sculptural craggy rocks on lofty cliffs, and weathered, oddly-shaped pine trees, depicted in all seasons and at various times of day. Wang Wusheng''s images are so exceptional that they look like paintings.AccompanTrade ReviewPraise for Celestial Realm: "A truly sublime photo book." - Business Week "Wang Wusheng's breathtaking photographs unlock the secret of traditional Chinese landscape painting." - Seattle Post-Intelligence "Each page is a revelation." - Parabol "Duotone photographs are the achingly beautiful stuff that dreams are made of. Book SynopsisAs inviting and sensual as a warm summer day, this opulent exhibition catalog offers a deep appreciation of Klimt's ornate, exquisitely detailed, and atmospheric landscape paintings. For the last twenty years of his career, Gustav Klimt devoted considerable energy to painting landscapes during his summer vacations-and these bucolic scenes became some of his most sought-after pictures. Filled with vibrant high-quality reproductions and featuring engaging essays by leading scholars in the field, this exhibition catalog situates Klimt's landscapes alongside fin-de-sie cle fashion, photography, and decorative arts of the Wiener Werksta tte in particular. Klimt's landscapes are examined within the context of his larger oeuvre and traces the evolution of his style: from one informed by the academic tradition, to his ornate "golden style" decorative approach influenced by the ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk, and then to a more painterly manner of working in pure color. The book also considers Klimt's relationship with his muse, fashion designer Emilie Flo ge; his deep engagement with the Viennese avant-garde; and the specific techniques he employed to achieve mesmerizing, harmonious works that literally shimmer with light and color.

Book SynopsisThe painter and collagist Wilfred Avery (1926 2016) tackled just two subjects in his career: landscape and the male body. A sixty-year investigation into both subjects developed out of his fascination with the unconscious mind as well as an exploration (and acceptance) of his own sexuality. By the end of his life - one led with a rare and intense creative focus - he had unified his two chosen subjects into one compelling whole. Untrained in any conventional sense and largely unrecognised, Wilfred's style evolved outside of any popular movement. He worked in self-imposed isolation from his creative contemporaries. Struggling to find his work a home in London's commercial art scene, he would remain adamant that he was making work for future audiences.

Pearl Lowe's gloriously decadent yet perfectly lived-in decorating style was featured in her bestselling interiors book Faded Glamour. Now Pearl is taking us to the coast, and in Faded Glamour by the Sea we get the first glimpse of her new home – a beautiful renovation project that she and her husband, musician Danny Goffey, have created in East Sussex. Built in the 1940s for an artist whose shell sculptures are still dotted round the garden, the house and adjacent cabins have been lovingly restored by Pearl. The house may have been a life-long dream for the couple, who have always loved the solace of water, but it has only been just over a year in the making, thanks to the inspiration Pearl has drawn from many friends who live in the area and also further afield. And so she takes us on a tour of their seaside homes. A pair of antique dealers whose love of all things French inspired them to set up their own brocante in Kent; an artist with a love of beach huts; an author who swapped London life for a clifftop house with his own writer’s hut. Add to this the Malibu beachfront home of stylist Rachel Ashwell, the hippy-chic style of supermodel Helena Christensen’s waterside retreat and the ‘punk noir Victorian’ vibe of the hotel created by friends from rock band The Libertines. In Faded Glamour by the Sea Pearl visits these properties, and as the owners tell their stories she explains how she found inspiration for this new chapter in her life.

Book SynopsisA fresh perspective on British landscape drawing in the Victorian and Modern eras. The attempts by artists of the Victorian and early Modern period to convey not merely the physical properties of a landscape but also its emotional and spiritual impact - landscape as 'places of the mind', as the critic Geoffrey Grigson put it - is the focus of this fascinating new study of British watercolours produced between 1850 and 1950. Drawing on the British Museum's impressive collection, this book explores artists' spiritual quests to capture the essence of landscape and convey a sense of place. Artists of the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries drew on earlier traditions but developed and extended the genre through their imaginative, personal responses to the artistic, cultural and social upheavals of the time.
