Book SynopsisThe world is facing dramatic geopolitical, environmental, and technological shifts. Venture Meets Mission argues that if Business, Government, and Society come together, rebuild trust, and collaborate, we have a generational opportunity to address societal challenges—climate change, cybersecurity, disease outbreaks, food insecurity, and education. The book explains, with hope and passion, how our existing entrepreneurial ecosystem, with the ideals of democracy, can be the foundation for a new mission-driven capitalism. The good news is the components of this problem-solving ecosystem already exist. The authors explain what is required to join people, purpose, and profit together for world-changing impact—starting with rebuilding trust among Business, Government, and Society. The authors draw on their leadership experience with Silicon Valley innovation, venture capital, and work at the highest levels of the federal government. The book tells engaging stories of successful entrepreneurs, with diverse perspectives and intersectional experiences, who combine mission and venture to solve critical societal problems. This book seeks to inspire a generation of students, young professionals, and entrepreneurial executives to pursue mission-driven ventures that can make the world a better place. Venture Meets Mission also explains why and how forward-thinking government officials and policymakers can harness private sector entrepreneurship and innovation to solve society's problems.Trade Review"The authors make a compelling case that the biggest challenges we face (climate change, national security, shared prosperity, etc.) will only be solved with a renewed partnership between government and entrepreneurs. Venture Meets Mission is filled with uplifting examples (e.g. NASA and SpaceX joining forces to regain U.S. leadership in space). The book inspires us to make these success stories the norm rather than the exception."—Eric Schmidt, Former CEO, Google"Brilliantly explains why we need to write new recipes to solve the problems of an increasingly complex world—and guides us on a search to find the key ingredients of empathy, innovation, public service, and entrepreneurship."—José Andrés, Chef, Humanitarian, and Founder of World Central Kitchen"Venture Meets Mission provides an aspirational roadmap for young professionals who want to make a meaningful difference in the world by building careers that balance purpose and profit"—Indra Nooyi, Former CEO, PepsiCo"As a former tech entrepreneur, and Governor, I've always believed in the power of venture-driven innovation, (coupled with the scale of government), to drive positive change. The book will rekindle for many a sense of progress, and even of hope."—Deborah Spar,Senior Associate Dean of Harvard Business School, Business in Global Society (BiGS)"Venture Meets Mission highlights one of the key superpowers of democracies: mission-driven entrepreneurship. This book is perfect for anyone who wants to make a difference and solve the most pressing problems of our time."—US Representative Ro Khanna, United States Representative from California's 17th District"The authors of Venture Meets Mission provide an inspiring roadmap for how we can rebuild trust among society, business, and government. It's the only way to address the big critical problems like climate change, food insecurity, and education. Venture capitalists can collaborate with government and other actors to bring amazing solutions to market in education, climate, agriculture and other critical sectors."—Maya Chorengel, Co-Managing Partner, The Rise Fund, TPG"Venture Meets Mission brings to life two powerful ideas: how to infuse a business with an inspiring mission and how working with the government can businesses profitably achieve their mission. Book SynopsisPublic–Private Partnerships (PPPs) promise much and present an exciting policy option.Trade Review‘. . . the volume is a timely, comprehensive, and valuable addition to the literature, which deserves to be widely read.’ -- Richard Allen, Governance‘. . . the Handbook informs, engages, questions, criticises and educates.’ -- Business Line‘As politicians across the world have loudly debated how best to shrink the size of government, clever entrepreneurs have pushed off in a very different direction: creating complex partnerships between government and the private sector, which have pushed government more deeply into the private sector and pulled private partnerships more deeply into the core of government. In this important new book, the editors have pulled together a fascinating collection of papers that examines how these partnerships are transforming the provision of services and, in fact, the very nature of governance itself.’ -- Donald F. Book SynopsisJoint Venture Strategies: Design, Bargaining, and the Law is a thoughtful approach to negotiating workable joint ventures. Significant detail is devoted to performing appropriate preparatory activities to improve the range of terms that could be considered in forging contractual agreements. The book sets realistic expectations for firms who might cooperate with partners by delineating the pitfalls of venturing and anticipating the posturing of potential parties with the objective of creating synergistic returns for all. Company examples inform their explanations of how to structure controls and share the benefits of working with partners. Special detail is devoted to the needs of venture capital and private equity investors. The book is necessary homework to be read before courting attractive opportunities through joint ventures.'- Kathryn Rudie Harrigan, Columbia Business School, USAlthough they have the potential to create synergies, joint ventures by their nature contain inherent risk. Therefore, each partner in a joint venture needs to incentivize each other in order to maximize its own payoff. Extensive pre-contractual and post-contractual bargaining is essential. This book provides successful bargaining strategies from the point of view of each partner company.Using a game theoretical framework to analyze joint venture strategy, it describes practical and legal issues that arise when creating synergies and incentive bargaining in a joint venture. With a particular focus on intellectual property law, including analysis based on many real cases, the book covers issues relating to creating synergies, corporate law issues of conflicts of interest, and antitrust law issues relating to cooperation between independent companies.Theoretically new and practically useful, Joint Venture Strategies will appeal to academics and practicing lawyers. From a corporate perspective, this book is essential for successful joint venture planning and strategy.Trade Review‘Joint Venture Strategies: Design, Bargaining, and the Law is a thoughtful approach to negotiating workable joint ventures. Book SynopsisBusiness Networks and Strategic Alliances in China addresses how knowledge transfer and innovation are interwoven within complex networks and how social capital contributes to the acquisition of crucial resources and business success in multi-type enterprises in China. The book explains how China's remarkable global economic impact in recent years has developed from foreign investment and that the dominant vehicle for economic development has been the International Joint Venture (IJV) between Chinese manufacturers and overseas enterprises. Strict guidelines on FDI mean that foreign firms have been obliged to form relationships with Chinese organizations. The authors illustrate that as a direct result, the quality and nature of the relations, networks, and alliances forged is crucial for the success of Chinese businesses.A sophisticated empirical, theoretical, comparative and historical guide to understanding the nature of business networks in China is provided by this work. As such, it makes a distinct contribution to the furtherance of evidence-based management theory and practice and will strongly appeal to those with an interest in management, international business and Asian studies.Trade Review'. . . the book can serve as a valuable reference for both novice scholars and experts with an intimate understanding of the business network literature who are interested in the dynamics of China's integration with the global economy.' -- Laixiang Sun, The China QuarterlyTable of ContentsContents: PART I: KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER 1. Book SynopsisPublic-Private Partnerships (PPPs) promise much and present an exciting policy option. Yet as this Handbook reveals there is still much debate about the meaning of partnership, and the degree to which potential advantages are in fact being delivered. In this timely Handbook, leading scholars from around the world explore the challenges presented by infrastructure PPPs, and contemplate what lies ahead as governments balance the need to provide innovative new infrastructure against the requirement for good public governance. This Handbook builds on a range of exciting theoretical lenses that span several disciplinary boundaries. It presents innovative insights and informed perspectives from an international base of empirical evidence. This essential Handbook will prove an invaluable reference work for academics, advanced post-graduate students and commentators of PPPs, as well as professionals, infrastructure regulators and government policy advisors.Trade Review‘. . . the volume is a timely, comprehensive, and valuable addition to the literature, which deserves to be widely read.’ -- Richard Allen, Governance‘. . . the Handbook informs, engages, questions, criticises and educates.’ -- Business Line‘As politicians across the world have loudly debated how best to shrink the size of government, clever entrepreneurs have pushed off in a very different direction: creating complex partnerships between government and the private sector, which have pushed government more deeply into the private sector and pulled private partnerships more deeply into the core of government. In this important new book, the editors have pulled together a fascinating collection of papers that examines how these partnerships are transforming the provision of services and, in fact, the very nature of governance itself.’ -- Donald F. Taylor & Francis Ltd Evolving Partnerships: A Guide to Working with

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisBy bringing together their respective competencies and resources for the greater good, governments, business, civil society and multilateral agencies have been seeking innovative ways to work together to respond to the myriad global challenges of our time: the impact of climate change; human security; the prevention, care and treatment of HIV/AIDS and other major diseases; the generation of new investment, entrepreneurship and employment; and financing for development. The appetite for such partnerships appears strong. Over 90% of corporate executives responding to a World Economic Forum survey felt that future partnerships between business, government and civil society would play either a major role or some role in addressing key development challenges. This trend will only be increased by the Western financial crisis and the retreat of the state from many areas of societal concern. In the last 15 years, many new partnerships have been formed, and many new people exposed to partnership ways of working. There have been remarkable successes, but also a range of concerns about effectiveness and accountability. Partnerships can work, but can they work better? Many practitioners are now asking how they can achieve a greater scale of impact to match the magnitude of the social and environmental challenges we face. When considering how to equip their organization or programme with the necessary skills to engage with companies in new ways, many leaders of NGOs or UN agencies hire staff from the private sector. Although such staff exchanges are important, it is not sufficient to rely on private-sector staff to develop and implement strategic forms of engagement. Rather, engaging business for social change is a specialism in itself. This book seeks to distil some of the author's 15 years of experience and key learnings on the advanced strategic planning of partnerships for people who work within civil society or public-sector organizations and who already partner with companies. Much of the research focus to date has been on operational issues, rather than on the strategic challenge of evolving partnerships to achieve a greater scale of impact. Rather than helping the reader with moving on from partnerships, this guidebook is intended to help with moving up to a greater scale of impact. The author identifies three generations in the evolution of cross-sector partnering and draws insights from the latest biological evolutionary theory on how complex systems can sustain themselves over time, translating this into a method for understanding and assessing partnering practice. Evolving Partnerships provides a rich and accessible mix of commentary, boxes for clarification, and 11 exercises to help the reader evolve partnering to achieve a wider level of impact – a level that responds to the scale, depth and urgency of the challenges we face today. Written by one of the world's leading authorities on partnerships and a key architect of global partnerships, including the Marine Stewardship Council, Evolving Partnerships will be essential reading for all those involved in cross-sectoral partnerships.Trade ReviewPartnerships can work, but can they work better? This accessible guidebook distils the author's key learnings on the advanced strategic planning of cross-sectoral partnerships. This guide gives valuable insights on lessons learned and outlines viable approaches to achieve greater effectiveness and impact. It is especially timely ahead of Rio +20 as governments are eager to experiment with fresh approaches to bring about much-needed change. - Georg Kell, Executive Director, United Nations Global Compact || The desire to 'give back to society' is growing among fledging and established industrial houses/corporations in India. However, most Indian companies who wish to be more responsible, lack the knowledge, trained manpower or the dedication to carry out community development programmes. In his excellent and useful guide, "Evolving Partnerships: A Guide to Working with Business for Greater Social Change", Jem Bendell says, "The appetite for partnerships appears strong. Over 90% of corporate executives responding to a World Economic Forum survey felt that future 'partnerships between business, government, and civil society would play either a major role or some role in addressing key development challenges'." Evolving Partnerships is a much needed guide to helping businesses and civil society work their way to successful partnerships. It holds the hands of the practitioners and takes them through the various stages of creating meaningful partnerships to bring about greater social change. This is a very useful guide for business houses in India and, more particularly, public sector units who need to secure NGO cooperation to implement their CSR agenda. Seeking partnerships is only part of the issue; more important is setting them up and making them effective and functional. Jem Bendell, with his vast experience in the area, has put together an excellent book which could serve as a bible for those involved in creating workable solutions through business/civil society cooperation. This is a must read publication. - 'indiacsr', 5 January 2012 - Suresh Kr Pramar, Executive Director, Centre for Training & Research in Responsible Business, NoidaTable of ContentsForeword Professor Malcolm McIntosh, Asia Pacific Centre for Sustainable Enterprise, Griffith University Introduction 1. Book SynopsisItaly’s officially joining the China-led Belt and Road Initiative sparked a fierce debate. By analysing five fields of cooperation, the volume sheds light on whether the bilateral agreement has brought about an intensification of bilateral collaboration as wished by the Italian government at the time and whether the concerns around it have materialised.
