John Blake Publishing Ltd Talking With Psychopaths and Savages: Beyond
Book Synopsis'I wrapped duct tape around her mouth and her nose and watched her suffocate to death . . . then I went back to work' - former Colonel David Russell Williams of the Royal Canadian Air Force, 2010Sunday Times-bestselling author Christopher Berry-Dee is back with a companion volume that delves even deeper into the savage world of psychopaths and their hideous crimes. This time, however, he combines sections on killers whom he has known, interviewed or corresponded with, with studies of psychopathic serial killers from the past, including Peter Kürten, the 'Düsseldorf Monster', John Christie, responsible for the killings at 10 Rillington Place; and Neville Heath, a ladykiller in every sense of the word. The result is a chilling narrative that sets the forensic examination of killers and their crimes within the context of murder in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, an examination of the evil mind set against the insoluble problem of identifying psychopaths who kill. This is not a book for the squeamish, but it is undeniably fascinating in its portrayal of just what one human being will do to others - while all too often moving among us unnoticed and unhindered. If their crimes seem as incomprehensible as they are horrific, it is undeniably true that the world's most savage killers may be much closer than we think . . .

Penguin Books Ltd The Anatomy of Violence
Book SynopsisAre some criminals born, not made? What causes violence and how can we treat it? An Anatomy of Violence introduces readers to new ways of looking at these age-old questions. Drawing on the latest scientific research, Adrian Raine explains what it reveals about the brains of murderers, psychopaths and serial killers. Anti-social behaviour is complex, he argues, and based on the interaction between genetics and the biological and social environment in which a person is raised. But the latest statistical evidence between certain types of biological and early behavioural warning signs is also very strong. These are among the thorny issues we can no longer ignore and this book is an important milestone in our growing understanding of criminal behaviour.Trade ReviewFascinating ... Has profound implications ... It is remarkable that most of the work Raine outlines remains largely unknown to the wider public ... I commend his intelllectual courage -- Jenni Russell * Sunday Times *Raine's book is a masterpiece. John Blake Publishing Ltd Talking with Female Serial Killers - A chilling
Book SynopsisChristopher Berry-Dee, criminologist and bestselling author of books about the serial killers Aileen Wuornos and Joanne Dennehy, turns his uncompromising gaze upon women who not only kill, but kill repeatedly. Because female murderers, and especially serial murderers, are so rare compared with their male counterparts, this new study will surprise as well as shock, particularly in the cases of women like Beverley Allitt, who kill children, and Janie Lou Gibbs, who killed her three sons and a grandson, as well as her husband. Here too are women who kill under the influence of their male partners, such as Myra Hindley and Rosemary West, and whose lack of remorse for their actions is nothing short of chilling. But the author also turns his forensic gaze on female killers who were themselves victims, like Aileen Wuornos, whose killing spree, for which she was executed, can be traced directly to her treatment at the hands of men. Christopher Berry-Dee has no equal as the author of hard-hitting studies of the killers who often walk among us undetected for many years, and who in so many cases seem to be acting entirely against their natures.

Prometheus Books Predators: Who They Are and How to Stop Them
Book SynopsisMost of us only half-listen to the public service announcements about safety in the home. We lock our doors at night, but do little else to change habits that may make us the next victims of the dangerous individuals who are always on the watch for their next opportunity. This updated paperback edition takes readers through the mindset of predatory criminals - their motives, various plans of attack, and way of thinking - and then teaches simple lifestyle techniques that will help reduce the risk of becoming victimized. Featuring a new chapter on how the Internet and social media has radically changed how some predators operate, criminal behavior specialists Greg Cooper and Mike King provide expert analysis based on real-life cases, in addition to moving insights from victims and criminals themselves. The authors make the point that the people who commit these crimes aren't much different from the predators of the wild, preying on the weak and unsuspecting. What makes these individuals more dangerous than their instinctive wildlife counterparts, however, is that they consciously choose to inflict their will on the more vulnerable members of their own species. To protect our loved ones and ourselves requires that we truly educate ourselves about the predators who live in our society and then take appropriate action. This excellent, in-depth study will help readers lead safer lives.Trade Review""In an absolutely riveting manner, criminal behavior specialists Cooper and King delve into the mind-sets of predatory criminals and suggest simple lifestyle techniques to help reduce the risk of victimization....while readers may get knots in their stomachs, they are bound to find information that will help them live safer lives. Highly recommended for all libraries." LIBRARY JOURNAL“This is a landmark book. It is powerful and compelling as well as practical. [The authors] draw on an extensive background in profiling to dissect the world of the predator and show us how to stop them. Deserves a place on everyone's bookshelf. It is a must read." Oneworld Publications Murder in the Name of Honour: The True Story of
Book SynopsisMurder in the Name of Honour is Rana Husseini’s hard-hitting and controversial examination of honour crimes. Common in many traditional societies around the world, as well as in migrant communities in Europe and the USA, they involve a ‘punishment’—often death or disfigurement—carried out by a relative to restore the family’s honour. Breaking through the conspiracy of silence surrounding this crime, one writer above all others has been instrumental in bringing it to the world’s attention: Rana Husseini.Trade Reviewed off as a suicide, her elder brother subsequently confessed that she was killed because she was determined to marry a neighbourhood boy despite her family's disapproval. He told the media that he killed her “to safeguard the honour of our family.” These are among the latest in the series of gruesome murders in the name of honour that have been reported from various parts of the country in recent months. Will such so-called “honour killings” stop if the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 is amended to prohibit marriages within the same gotra? Unlikely. That may be the most publicised of the demands and threats issued by the Khap Mahapanchayat — a congregation of caste Panchayats from Jat strongholds in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan — in Kurukshetra on April 13, and subsequently elsewhere. But it was not the only one. They have also reportedly called for a ban on marriages within the same village and contiguous villages, as well as de-recognition of temple weddings uniting runaway couples. Landmark judgment The mythical gotra factor may have come to the fore because the Kurukshetra gathering was clearly triggered by the recent landmark judgment delivered by District and Sessions Judge Vani Gopal Sharma in Karnal (Haryana) in the case of Manoj and Babli Banwala, a young couple belonging to the same caste and gotra, who were murdered in 2007 because they dared to marry each other. But, as scholar and activist Jagmati Sangwan has pointed out, not all honour killings even within Haryana involve same- gotra couples. According to her, the majority of the marriages condemned by Khap Panchayats are of couples who do not share a gotra. Besides, even in a small state like Haryana, there are apparently areas and castes that permit intra-village and intra- gotra marriages, and do not have caste or Khap Panchayats. So the self-styled Khap Mahapanchayat cannot legitimately claim to represent all Hindu communities in Haryana, let alone the rest of India. Most victims of “honour killings” reported from various parts of the country are young people who choose to love or marry outside their caste, sub-caste or religion. Not surprisingly, the socially and economically dominant castes are usually responsible for acts of reprisal against inter-caste relationships. The bottom line is that, even today, many young lovers are punished — often with death — for having the temerity to fall in love across boundaries of caste or religion. Many caste groups, communities and families in several parts of the country still seem violently opposed to the right of young adults to choose a life partner (even though courts have upheld citizens' right to select their significant other, including a same-sex partner). In the name of preserving “social order” and saving the “honour” of t * The Hindu *"What Husseini has done and continues to do in order to save the lives of innocent women who may be murdered by their families in so-called honor killings is truly commendable." * Multicultural Review *

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewWe have clearly not learned the lessons of past financial debacles, a central one being that crime has played a significant role in them. Unlike traditional economic and legal analyses, this volume starts from the (correct) premise that criminal offending was a central phenomenon in the meltdown. Its contents provide diverse and penetrating analyses of how fraud occurred and how it might best be prevented. This work provides an excellent foundation for further academic research and needs to be on the desk of every legislator dealing with financial regulation. -- Henry N. In this book, leading criminologists put this right by explaining impunity for the crimes of financial capitalism. It is rich with insight on how Wall Street games regulation. When Goldman Sachs takes fat fees to help Greece conceal its debt, is fraud involved? Are millions of unemployed Greeks victims of fraud? Are we all? Book SynopsisTrade ReviewIn an unusually vigorous interrogation of philosophy and the social sciences, Lisa Guenther addresses one of humanity’s greatest inhumanities and its perversely long, extensive history in America. Guenther offers a compelling critique of solitary confinement, in the course of which she pushes phenomenology beyond its classical limits, revealing our inherent inter-subjectivity, our need for both interaction and anonymity, and the moral imperative that America end this cruel and barbaric form of punishment. Duke University Press Bruno
Book SynopsisBruno is the story of a Brazilian navy corporal turned drug dealer, who after being imprisoned became the leader of one of Brazil's biggest criminal factions, the Comando Vermelho. Bruno's story provides insights into the Brazilian drug trade, prison life, and explains the epidemic of violence in Rio's favelas.Trade Review“This particular account is interesting and engaging…” -- Ed Hart * Sounds and Colours *"The real contribution of Bruno [is]... the private reflections that we gain from a single informant who is intelligent, critical, and painfully idealistic. It is this personal voice, rather than the empirical data, that makes Bruno truly special, and a necessary supplement for scholars interested not only in drug trafficking and prisons, but in the relationship between crime and self-reflection as well." -- Samuel E. Novacich * Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology *“In telling the story of Bruno, sociologist Robert Gay succeeds in demystifying not only gangs and the drug trade but also an entire country. This is a carefully crafted study of a criminal career embedded in a society that for generations has denied citizenship to large numbers of its population…. This is an important book that skilfully utilises ethnographic interviews to tell the story of one man in the trenches of the global war against drugs.” -- Dick Hobbs * Times Higher Education *"This gripping book is a superb entry point into the maze of Brazilian prisons and, hopefully, a spur to more systematic historical research into the country’s current dilemmas with prisons, drugs, and gangs." -- Paul Gootenberg * Hispanic American Historical Review *"From the haunting cover to the emotional ending Bruno: Conversations with a Brazilian Drug Dealer shapes up to be a gripping read for anyone interested in the shady underworld of drug gang culture. . . . Bruno is a fascinating account that will serve as a useful testament of life in the Brazilian underworld which will be of immense value to students of cultural studies and Latin American history for years to come. In that sense, Bruno is strictly not the sensationalised bestseller that the story has the potential to be, but something infinitely more valuable." -- Jay Kerr * Latin American Review of Books *"Robert Gay has written an intimate, eye-opening book that opens a window into the politics of prisons and drug prohibition in Brazil." -- Kevin Lewis O'Neill * Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute *"Stirring. . . . Gay offers a finely grained ethnographic account of an individual whose life is embedded in a complex world of drug trafficking complicities." -- Robert Gay * Latin American Research Review *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Introduction 1 1. New York University Press Covered in Ink
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewCovered in Inkprovides a detailed and gendered look at the lives of heavily tattooed women and how their choices to cover their bodies in ink represents both group belonging, yet a life that is still on the periphery of society, especially so for women who are expected to be pretty and sexy, not covered in large 'unfeminine' tattoos. * Metapsychology *Covered in Ink is an excellent addition to the growing body of serious literature on tattooing. Based on extensive ethnographic research and personal experience, the author focuses on issues of central interest including beauty, presentation of self, gender roles, deviance, public interaction, and discrimination. The book is written in an engaging style and offers a uniquely interesting feminist take on an increasingly popular mode of body alteration. -- Clinton Sanders, author of Customizing the Body: The Art and Culture of TattooingIn this book, Beverly Yuen Thompson serves up a sophisticated sociology of the skin. From street interactions and family perceptions to legal constraints and workplace dynamics, she shows how the world of tattooing interweaves time and again with issues of gender and the body. As vivid as its subject matter, this book is itself a batch of beautiful ink. -- Jeff Ferrell, author of Empire of Scrounge: Inside the Urban Underground of Dumpster Diving, Trash Picking, anThompson brings up a number of insightful points regarding self-expression, femininity, and the way in which heavily tattooed women navigate a society that is gradually becoming more accepting. * Utne Reader *Table of ContentsContents Acknowledgments vii Introduction: Becoming Covered 1 1.
