Books by H P Lovecraft

H. P. Lovecraft stands as one of the most influential voices in twentieth‑century horror, weaving tales that merge cosmic dread with meticulous imagination. His fiction conjures shadowed New England streets, forbidden tomes, and ancient entities whose existence challenges human understanding, defining a distinct atmosphere of unease that continues to shape modern speculative writing.

This collection showcases Lovecraft's mastery of language and mood, capturing both the grandeur and fragility of the human mind when faced with the unknown. Ideal for readers drawn to gothic ambience, philosophical terror, and the origins of the Cthulhu Mythos, it offers a gateway into a universe where knowledge itself can be perilous.

Book Synopsis''Loathsomeness waits and dreams in the deep, and decay spreads over the tottering cities of men. A time will come - but I must not and cannot think!'' H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) was a reclusive scribbler of horror stories for the American pulp magazines that specialized in Gothic and science fiction in the interwar years. He often published in Weird Tales and has since become the key figure in the slippery genre of ''weird fiction''. Lovecraft developed an extraordinary vision of feeble men driven to the edge of sanity by glimpses of malign beings that have survived from human prehistory or by malevolent extra-terrestrial visitations. The ornate language of his stories builds towards grotesque moments of revelation, quite unlike any other writer. This new selection brings together nine of his classic tales, focusing on the ''Cthulhu Mythos'', a cycle of stories that develops the mythology of the Old Ones, the monstrous creatures who predate human life on earth. It includes the Introduction from Lovecraft''s critical essay, ''Supernatural Horror in Literature'', in which he gave his own important definition of ''weird fiction''. In a fascinating contextual introduction, Roger Luckhurst gives Lovecraft the attention he deserves as a writer who used pulp fiction to explore a remarkable philosophy that shockingly dethrones the mastery of man.Trade ReviewThis book is a testament to Lovecraft's enduring ability to thrill us while simultaneously scaring us stupid, and as such it is very highly recommended. * Ian White, Starburst *Table of ContentsIntroduction Select Bibliography A Chronology of H. Book SynopsisHoward Phillips Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island on August 20, 1890. His father, a traveling salesman, suffered a nervous breakdown three years later and was hospitalised until his death in 1898, from a form of syphilis. Lovecraft's family experienced financial difficulties after the death of his grandfather in 1904, and the shame of this deeply affected the young writer. His relationship with his mother was severely troubled, and she was also hospitalised after a nervous breakdown in 1919. After a brief marriage and a period living in Brooklyn where he first began publishing his stories in the magazine Weird Tales, Lovecraft returned to Providence where he continued to write stories, and supported himself through ghost-writing. He continued to be plagued by money problems, and died in relative poverty on March 15, 1937. His numerous stories, novellas and poem were never collected and properly published during his lifetime.Trade ReviewThe twentieth century horror story's dark and baroque prince -- Stephen KingDark, weird tales about tentacled beasts, ancient artifacts that ooze unidentifiable slime and baby-eating cultists eager to bring about the end of the world * New York Times *Lovecraft found a voice that was profoundly his own -- and brought horror into the 20th century. Book SynopsisWritten in 1928, H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu defined the ancient gods as dark creatures who came from the stars and ruled the world before mankind. When these ancient ones awaken, humanity is plagued by a nightmare of terrors etched upon an epic backdrop. The author’s concept deeply redefined the horror story with this thrilling, dense mystery that spawned a virtual genre. The artist Gary Gianni and designer Marcelo Anciano both felt that Lovecraft’s short story presented an opportunity to visually expand the Cthulhu Mythos and push the boundaries of illustrated books. Intense and fast-paced, the tale enabled them to explore graphic storytelling and illustrate the text in a unique way. It was a personal project for Gianni, who drew upon his decades of experience in illustrating numerous books and graphic novels. The Call of Cthulhu, as illustrated by Gary Gianni, is a fusion of cinematic design, the graphic novel and illustrated books. Over a hundred finished pencil drawings with color pieces enhance and bring to life the work of two visionaries—Lovecraft and Gianni—in an extraordinary feat of storytelling and art.

Book SynopsisWeird and Horrific Stories (2021) collects some of H. P. Lovecraft’s finest early work. Although his reputation as one of the world’s greatest writers of horror and weird fiction remains undisputed, much of his writing was published in such pulp literary magazines as Argosy, the United Amateur, and Weird Tales, making it difficult to find proper collections. Weird and Horrific Stories attempts to bridge this gap for modern readers, bringing them face to face with some of Lovecraft’s most terrifying creations.“The Alchemist,” originally written in 1908 and published in 1916, is the story of Count Antoine, whose ancestors were cursed after killing a fearsome dark wizard named Michel Mauvais. Every generation since has seen the death of its male members at the age of thirty-two, an age fast approaching for Antoine. Lonely and terrified, he sets out to put an end to the cycle of death and suffering. “Dagon,” which appeared in The Vagrant in 1919, is a story told by a morphine-addicted man who survived a terrible shipwreck during the First World War. In “The Cats of Ulthar,” published in 1920, an unnamed narrator recounts the legal history of the town of Ulthar, which once was the home to a sadistic couple known for their obsession with torturing and killing housecats. Weird and Horrific Stories collects over thirty stories written at the height of Lovecraft’s career. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of H. P. Lovecraft’s Weird and Horrific Stories is a classic work of American horror reimagined for modern readers.

Book SynopsisDevoured by the Lovecraftian community and general readers alike, Leslie S. Klinger’s best-selling The New Annotated H.P. Lovecraft, Volumes I and II were hailed as classics of the genre. Now Klinger returns with the ideal annotated primer not only for Lovecraft devotees eager for a more portable version but also students, literature-lovers and curious newcomers looking for a scare. In “Dagon”, one of Lovecraft’s earliest stories, the terrifying idea of an unknown being at the bottom of the ocean is introduced for the first time; in “The Call of Cthulhu”, the horror spreads beyond the sea. The iconic “Rats in the Walls” relates a journey into the depths of a haunted house and mind, while “The Outsider” is a twisted tale that will make the reader question everything. A necessity for any library, The Call of Cthulhu and Other Stories is an indispensable companion for anyone looking to experience a master at the height of his craft. A paperback original.Trade Review" Praise for The New Annotated H.P. Lovecraft, Volumes I and II: Norton’s new volume must surely be the definitive collection. It is meticulously and imaginatively edited, beautifully illustrated and immaculately produced, with a thought-stirring introduction by the graphic novel writer Alan Moore." -- New Statesman"Perfect for anyone who enjoys exploring the outer regions of the imagination—and guaranteed to give you the shivers on a cold winter’s night." -- Sarah Vine - Daily Mail"Klinger’s depth of knowledge about the world Lovecraft inhabited, and his ability to tease out shades of Lovecraft’s personal experiences in the stories, make this volume the most exciting and definitive collection of Lovecraft’s work out there." -- Danielle Trussoni - The New York Times Book Review"Annotator Les Klinger is the man you want to have by your side, as you explore the Lovecraftian Darkness." -- Neil Gaiman
