Quiller Publishing Ltd The Training Spiral: Traditional Methods
Book SynopsisThe “Scales of Training,” “Training Scale,” and “Training Pyramid” are familiar terms to riders. Around the globe and across disciplines, equestrians hear reference to them or study them as a part of their equestrian education. Dressage rider and trainer Sue Grice grew up with these concepts, too, and like many, found them to be not only fairly boring, but also confusing when it came to actually implementing them as part of daily training. In the course of her work with other riders, she came to realize that although many seemed to know about the Scales of Training in theory, few actually applied them in practice. Grice determined that this was because there was really no clear framework or methodology for implementing the system in a progressive manner. So Grice conceived a new approach based on the standard but with a focus on a better rate of success. Success could be achieved when the rider was engaged with the system and understood how to continually adhere to it, even as advances (or falters) might occur. For over 30 years she has continued to develop and apply her ideas, and now she has finally brought them together to share with the world in this book. Here readers find a detailed plan for applying what Grice calls the “Training Spiral.” She does not try to rewrite what history has shown to work in the development of the riding horse, but instead simply provides a fresh framework that enables riders and trainers to: - Apply the classical elements of the Training Scale in a more progressive and logical manner, and, - Employ them systematically within daily training as well as over a longer period of time. Grice provides clear explanations of how to use each of the six elements (Rhythm, Suppleness, Contact, Impulsion, Straightness, and Collection), how the elements are to be used in order, and what can go wrong if they are applied in the wrong order. Clear examples are given at all levels of training, and detailed case studies demonstrate how the Training Spiral can succeed where traditional systems have failed. The spiral structure provides a means of applying the Scales of Training in practice that is not just logical but also extremely easy to follow. The clarity of Grice's approach also helps horses understand what is being asked of them, leading to a happier relationship between horses and riders, and training that progresses more quickly and easily overall. The Training Spiral is an invaluable and immensely practical guide for trainers and riders at all levels, from novice to advanced.Trade ReviewThis is an insightful book and Sue is a feeling rider that trains all horses to improvement. I am one of several trainers she works with and I just love how she improves the ordinary horses as well as the well bred superstars. She is always thoughtful and kind with her training methods; this book expresses her inner thoughts - Pammy Hutton

John Blake Publishing Ltd Six Feet Above: Jumping to the top
Book SynopsisThis is the fascinating story of Swedish equestrian and Olympic medallist Peder Fredricson and his winding road to success. As a five-year-old he was riding on free rein in the Swedish forests and from then on everything was about horses. He worked as a groom for the best equestrians in the world, lived on next to nothing and rode for a while with a buzzard on his arm. He was a skilled rider but not very interested in competing. When he finally was persuaded to compete in the big equestrian eventing and showjumping competitions, he realised that talent was not enough - he had to rethink completely. He created a structure, both for everyday life and for competitions, and the outcome was almost immediate. After only a few years, he was one of the best showjumpers in the world. Much has changed since his unconventional childhood, but his attitude remains the same - interaction with the horses is what is most important. His mental focus has been his secret weapon in the major competitions.Today, Peder Fredricson is one of the top showjumpers on the planet with four Olympic medals to his credit. In 2021 he was ranked the world number one rider.

Quiller Publishing Ltd Rider Biomechanics: An Illustrated Guide: How to
Book SynopsisRider Biomechanics begins by explaining fascia — the 'cinderella of body tissues'. Until recently, this was ignored by science, consigned to its apparent role as the body's packing material. However, research shows that, in reality, this biological fabric links muscles into functional chains, rather like strings of sausages. Recent research has shown that the horse's fascial system is remarkably similar to our own, with equivalent 'lines of pull' that affect posture, movement, stability and mobility. Inevitably, the problems inherent in sitting and riding well are magnified when there is imbalance within and between the fascial 'guy-ropes' of rider and/or horse. We should realise that imbalance in either partner can send the other 'out of true', whilst the 'equipoise' of one partner helps the other to regain that poise. By working through this book, you will learn to access and rebalance your own fascial net to significantly improve your stability, skill and 'feel'. Practical exercises, enhanced with copious photographs and diagrams, show how to balance your front and back, left and right — yielding skills that simultaneously address the equivalent imbalances in your horse. Mary explains how effective force transmission within the fascial system enables riders to push their hands forward, taking away the temptation to pull on the reins. Later chapters show how twists and distortions in both human and horse can be addressed through accessing the fascial lines that wrap diagonally around the body. Lastly, a look at the core of both partners shows just how profound their connection can be.Trade ReviewIf there is one equestrian author who single-handedly changed how we looked at riding it has to be Mary Wanless. Rider Biomechanics is an incredibly detailed book, beautifully illustrated with colourful diagrams and photographs which show the influence of the body, including the front and back lines as well as the influence the arms and spinal position has on the rider's ability to help or hinder the horse. This is such a long way away from the instructions of old where we were merely told to have a straight line from the horse's mouth to our elbows. I am sure there must be many a horse who, with a rider who is aware of what their body is doing, must think 'thank goodness for Mary Wanless!'. -- Jacqui BroderickMary Wanless – who's extremely well-known for her previous books dedicated to rider position (Ride With Your Mind) – has put more of her knowledge and training onto the pages or Rider Biomechanics... In some ways, she tells us, it can rather like the skin on a string of sausages – the fascia that is the fabric of our body, that is then the link into muscle and functional chains. 'Lines of pull'. Where the horse is concerned, these lines of pull are what we as riders, need to be aware of... Sounds simple here, but whether you tip forward, tip back, round your back or hollow it, draw your leg upwards, forwards or too far back, there is a complete explanation and reasoning behind it, through it and then working towards correcting it.With disciplined training – we can all edge towards riding and looking as it we're sitting elegantly, not doing a lot! -- Wendy Parsons * Essex Rider *Mary teaches a centred, balanced approach to riding that's light years away from the 'heels down, head up' approach that many of us learnt as children. In her book, she concentrates on using the fascial system and core muscles to build a deeply balanced riding position that's in tune with the way the horse moves.Table of ContentsForewordAcknowledgementsIntroductionPART 1: THE FASCIAL NET AND FEELChapter 1 - FasciaChapter 2 - FeelPART 2: FRONT, BACK AND SIDES - THE OUTER SLEEVEChapter 3 - The Rider's Front and Back LinesChapter 4 - The Horse's Superficial Front and Back Lines and Riding ImplicationsChapter 5 - The Lateral Lines in Rider and Horse - the Intermediate and Outer Stability SystemsPART 3: FUNCTIONAL LINES AND ARM LINES - PUSHING THE HANDS FORWARDChapter 6: The Functional LinesChapter 7: The Arm LinesPART 4: TWISTS, TURNS AND THE REAL DEAL OF THE COREChapter 8: The Spiral LinesChapter 9: The Deep Front LineConclusion - Riding as a Long-term ProjectGlossaryInternet ConnectivityIndex

Quiller Publishing Ltd The Balanced Horse: The Aids by Feel, Not Force
Book SynopsisThis book is about developing that 'perfect understanding'. Whether you practice dressage, hack, event or show, the improvement of your horse through an understanding of 'his' language, should allow him greater ability and confidence in all your work together. The aim of The Balanced Horse is to confirm in people's minds what they should be doing for each request, and what they must avoid. The author abhors the use of force and gadgetry in the schooling of horses and believes classical riding is the best way forward for all the disciplines.Trade ReviewSylvia Loch has written much about the art of dressage and the Iberian breeds. Indeed her book The Royal Horse of Europe is perhaps the most definitive work on the Iberian horse. The Balanced Horse is another well written book from the Loch stable. It is a book about communication – communication between horse and rider using a clear dialogue of subtle, almost invisible aids of the seat, leg and hand. But the author has used her communication skills one step further to convey this knowledge to the reader in, as Carl Hester says in his foreword, 'a user-friendly way that will help any rider at any level'. This is a book, not only for the rider, but riding teachers and judges would also benefit from the advice it contains. -- Patrick PrintIn her new book, The Balanced Horse, author Sylvia Loch...confirms what equestrians should be doing and what they should avoid when it comes to each and every request they give their horse. Intended for those seeking the elusive art of riding versus competing, this valuable resource will help equestrians develop a better relationship with their horses.Renown in the classical world for her teaching, this book continues the marvellous work Sylvia has done bringing her love for the Iberian breeds and her steadfast belief that the language of the aids should be more thoroughly understood...to all who are prepared to take the time it really does take to produce a horse which can be ridden in the lightest and most harmonious way. -- Wendy ParsonsTable of ContentsTitle Page Dedication Illustration Credits Epigraph Foreword by Carl Hester MBE Why I Wrote this Book Acknowledgements Introduction 1. Here, Tobias Capwell continues his history of jousting seen through surviving artefacts in the collection of the Royal Armouries. He reveals how the jousts and tournaments of the Renaissance transported knightly combat into a kind of performance art, with demonstrations of aristocratic skill and nerve, of superhuman strength and superlative horsemanship and of cutting-edge equipment.

Trafalgar Square Stable Core Training
Book SynopsisWhen horsewoman and certified personal trainer Joyce Kramer discovered that the riders most committed to fitness were not reaping the benefits of their improved athleticism on horseback, she abandoned the standard protocol for developing strength, endurance, and stability. Her background in the study of movement and holding patterns enabled her to develop her own unique approach to physical training capable of improving riding function and performance in such dramatic ways, it can bring out what she calls the inner elite rider in everyone.Using phenomenal hand-drawn imagery and engaging photographs of her own students at work, Kramer begins her book by clarifying the four most important ingredients to riding in harmony with an equine partner, as well as the aspects that nurture a sense of feel in the rider:- Alignment- Centering- Grounding- Positive TensionThe second part of the book focuses on rider position, deconstructing the body's sections and again using imagery to enable readers to connect all their parts into one cohesive, breathing, supple whole. An optimal position allows the horse to carry the rider comfortably and efficiently, promoting performance to the very best of his ability. Finally, Kramer takes the reader on a journey to the deep core, which she has identified as key not only to limiting extraneous movement of the exterior body visible to others, but also to the energy exchange at the most exciting level of connection with a horse. Bones, internal organs, and spinal stabilizers are engaged on the ground and in the saddle, using sound cues, proprioceptive props, and imagery, with mind-blowing results. With hundreds of images, tips, and exercises that can be modified according to age and ability, and an excitingly fresh perspective, this book can be the key to any rider reaching the next level in the saddlewhether that means excelling in a whole new division of competition, or recovering or rebuilding after time away from the sport. Every page is full of fun, engaging answers to your riding questions, ideas for clearing your stumbling blocks, and the endless promise of pursuing an activity you love in the company of your horse.

Quiller Publishing Ltd Dressage Solutions: A Rider's Guide
Book SynopsisFollowing the highly acclaimed Kottas on Dressage, this book offers advice on the correct way to introduce work on the paces, exercises and movements, together with in-depth analysis of common problems and the ways to correct them. The author makes the points that many errors, so easily attributed to the horse, are rooted in faulty posture or aiding on the rider's part, and emphasises throughout the importance of focusing on these issues at all stages of training. Constant emphasis is also placed on the need to be mindful of the horse's mental and physical ability to copy with what is being asked of him — there are reminders throughout that, often, the best way to achieve progress is to take a step back and ensure the building blocks are in place that will facilitate the next step forward. The need to consider various aspects of conformation is also stressed — not all horses are perfect specimens, and the overall training of any horse will be enhanced if due consideration is given to individual considerations. Dressage Solutions takes the reader through many stages of training, from ensuring that the basic paces are correct, through introducing the lateral exercises, developing the canter, rein-back, piaffe and passage, to a final chapter that explains some of the long-established movements of the High School. This is a journey that will provide much food for thought, and a great deal of invaluable advice, for all riders who have progress and their horse's well-being at heart.Trade ReviewThis book is quite amazing! It is full of superb photographs and illustrations and is so obviously a product of a lifetime of experience and expertise, written and presented in such an easy-to-read way...Even if you don't compete in dressage competitions, there are many pages in this book which are relevant to just riding, showing or flatwork for jumping. This book will be inspirational to all classicists and those aspiring to the art...The book is set out in a very clear, concise way. As the title suggests it deals with problems often encountered at most stages of training, in most cases giving a blueprint of how things should be; how they can go wrong; followed by solution.Simple, clear, and unfussy, Dressage Solutions is the reference I'll be turning to for advice in tackling all those little (or not-so-little) training quandaries.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction 1. Pan Macmillan Stable Lass: Tales from a Yorkshire Racing Yard
Book Synopsis'Poignant and compelling, an equine Bridget Jones.' – Racing PostBeing a stable lass is probably one of the hardest jobs in the country, and yet for Gemma Hogg it is the most rewarding. She works in the beautiful Yorkshire market town of Middleham and if her colleagues are occasionally challenging, then the horses are downright astonishing. Now, in Stable Lass, she takes us into the closed world of a top racing yard, from the elation of having several winners in one day to the almost indescribable grief of losing a horse. Like most stable lads and lasses, Gemma arrived in her yard as a teenager fresh out of racing college and had to cope with living away from home for the first time, as well as adapting to the brutal long hours, backbreaking work and often treacherous weather. She describes falling in love with Polo Venture, the first racehorse in her care, the pure exhilaration of riding him on Middleham Gallops for the first time and what happens when a horse takes against you, from the growling gelding Valiant Warrior to the potentially lethal Broadway Boy. She brings to life the characters around the yard, from straight-talking boss Micky Hammond to the jockeys starving themselves to make weight, the wealthy owners and the other stable lads and lasses who come from a range of different places and backgrounds. Stable Lass by Gemma Hogg is a unique look into the world of horse racing filled with heart-warming stories and amazing thoroughbreds – some loveable, some cantankerous, all impressive.Trade ReviewVividly funny, shockingly frank, deeply passionate, movingly sensitive - and that’s just about the horses! Trafalgar Square For the Love of the Horse: Looking Back, Looking
Book SynopsisOver 30 years ago, renowned horseman and popular storyteller Mark Rashid's first book, Considering the Horse, was published. In it he shared his experiences with horses and people, subtly delivering practical lessons in horsemanship and life in a conversational style that resonated with audiences around the world. Now Rashid considers all that has happened in the years that have passed since that first book was published—the transformative moments and impactful individuals who have helped shape his philosophies and methods since then. With his distinctive voice, he shepherds readers through topics of relevance in the equestrian industry while telling more of his life story, resulting in an engaging memoir-style read that remains rich in nuggets of wisdom that you can put right to work in your daily interactions with horses. In For the Love of the Horse, Rashid explores: - Ways he tried to find his own way of being with horses without actually knowing what he was looking for. - How the art of aikido, and the teachers he had, changed his ideas about life and relationships outside the dojo. - How it feels to be soft (and how it feels to not be), and how Rashid learned to stay true to the principles of softness as he understood them, regardless of the situation. - How he broke out of the pattern of assigning human emotions and comprehension to horses. - The impact neuroscientist Dr. Steve Peters had on Rashid's understanding of the horse's behaviors and responses and how they correlate to what is actually going on in the horse's brain. - The power of observation and learning how to be still, even in the midst of activity. - The difference between trying to connect with the horse versus allowing the horse to connect with you. - How over time Rashid has shifted from trying techniques that alter a horse's behavior, to adjusting his own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in order to help the horse feel safer. In his familiar way, Rashid takes readers on a journey that rewards with both adventure and education, finding new inroads in our attempts to become better company and fairer caregivers to horses. With his thoughtful lifetime of study leading by example, we are all encouraged to consider how far horsemanship has come and how bright its future might be.
