Book SynopsisDraw Yourself Calm welcomes readers into the mindful practice of slow drawing with 25 beautiful patterns inspired by nature. A practical and effective book for increasing creativity while reducing stress. With all the stimulation and stress of daily life, we each need to find ways of slowing down. Drawing simple, repetitive shapes relaxes the brain: attention flows away from sources of stress and centres on the act of putting pen to paper. The book is organized into three sections. The introduction covers slow drawing and mindfulness, and how to weave slow drawing into everyday life. Chapter 1 dives into slow drawing warm-ups and exercises aimed at helping readers notice what they see, feel, and hear while they draw. Chapter 2 takes the reader through 25 elegant and inspiring patterns of all kinds. These patterns can be approached in any order, and readers can choose how best to fit slow drawing into their lives, whether through daily or weekly drawing. Amy Maricle offers a playful, no-right-or-wrong approach that empowers readers to slow draw in a way that is creative, but not pressure-filled. This book offers a space for readers to nurture themselves creatively and spiritually by providing all the tools and inspiration needed to develop a slow drawing practice.Trade ReviewThe antidote or at least the reprieve from the daily stresses of life. I’m loving this book. It’s beautifully designed and printed. Really nice quality. The instruction is clear and I find it very accessible for me. It’s a tool of both great simplicity and complexity together and as I create, I decide where I want to go with each pattern. Do I just need some calming time with guidance and no decisions? Then I can follow the pattern prompt. Do I want to dig further to see what arises in and for me? Amy guides you along, opening up our ideas, and gently questioning. I don’t always know what I need until I begin with some slow drawing time but Amy has you covered in this book. Benefits I have found beyond my gratefully received calm are also improved focus, openness, dropping the idea of perfection, observation, time for free thinking and flow, and respite from the many challenges of each day. Taking the time in this practice really calms my (chronically ill) central nervous system making it an important asset in my health needs. What a bonus. The pricing is great. Affordable and yet of higher value than the cost! If there was something I didn’t like about the book I would include it but I’ve not found it yet! Definitely recommend. -- Jenny Malone * Amazon Customer Review *I was lucky enough to be given a copy of this book and I'm so grateful as it's been a revelation. The basic idea is to slow down the act of drawing so it becomes a mindful exercise. This allows you to experience the pen moving across the page, to watch each shape being formed. It takes some getting used to but once you concentrate on the act of drawing, rather than producing a drawing, you forget about perfection and instead enjoy what you are producing. The patterns provided in the book are just a stepping stone, or gentle hand holding, there is just so much scope for where you can go with this material. I have never found doodling particularly meditative as I have to keep on reminding myself how to draw the patterns but with this book it doesn't matter. That's both the joy and the drive behind this wonderful book. If you don't think you are artistic I would almost guarantee you'll love the images you produce following the guidance in this book, I certainly did and I've only just scratched the surface of what's on offer. -- Christine Jones * Amazon Customer Review *Just back from holiday, unpacking and usual yucky catch-up stuff, this was waiting on the mat. I couldn’t resist a quick flick through - oh my word! It’s beautifully printed, a delight to hold, intuitive and accessible, jam packed with advice, tips and design ideas. Amy truly is the master of her craft and shares her wealth of knowledge in this affordable book. Do yourself a favour - buy it and ‘draw yourself calm’ - my money says you won’t regret it. * Amazon Customer Review *For someone that gets quite stressed at work this is an absolute dream of a book, I wasn’t to sure to begin with but found myself immersed into a world of slow drawing… I actually couldn’t wait to get home to switch off and enjoy a bit of me time with my pencil and pad.. easy to follow exercises and for someone that is not an experienced drawer. I would highly recommend -- Juliet Naybur * Amazon Customer Review *An interesting book - a book designed to teach you how to relax while being creative - taking the stress away from drawing. It starts with mindfulness exercises - creative meditation, allowing your body and mind to flow on the page. If like me you get a bit stressed and tight when drawing this book will help set you free. Have a go. -- Barbara Marjoram * Amazon Customer Review *With all the stress of life, we each need to find ways of slowing down. Drawing simple, repetitive shapes relaxes the brain; attention flows from sources of stress to centre on putting pen to paper. This practical book aims to increase creativity while reducing stress. * Machine Knitting Monthly *I was really excited to receive this particular book 'Draw yourself calm by Amy Maricle' because it encourages everyone to get creative, you don't need any prior experience. I often speak with people in store who want to try something creative but don't feel confident enough and worry that what they create won't be 'good enough'. This particular style of art is a great place to start. Though this book is called 'Draw yourself calm' it is not about drawing detailed pictures, it is instead encouraging you to take part in what the author calls 'Slow drawing' which I would say is like mark making, similar to doodling or Zen tangling in a way. Mark Making is one of the most basic forms of art, which we are encouraged to do from a very young age, as soon as our little hands can hold a pencil, we begin the journey. Unfortunately, a lot of us as we get older forget that mark making can be fun, and as this book points out, therapeutic, and so we don't do it enough. It is something that all ages can do and enjoy. I love that this book is encouraging us to get back into it in a new mindful way. Another great thing about the activities included in this book is that they require a limited number of materials, so even those on a tight budget can have a go at them. If you have a pen and some scraps of paper you can give them a go. If you want to take your artwork up a notch then you could choose to invest in some of the recommended art materials detailed in the book. The author, Amy Maricle, is a qualified art therapist who is keen to promote mindfulness throughout the book so it has some great information on how taking part in the activities will help you de-stress and keep calm. There is a combination of full step-by-step activities and some guided suggested patterns to have a go at. There are plenty of photos and example pieces to inspire you too. At the end of the book, the author even gives you some tips and ideas on what you could do with your finished 'Slow Drawings' artwork which I think is fantastic. If you are totally new to art but want to give it a go, especially drawing of any kind, then I would recommend this book as a great starting point. You can take the skills you learn from it and progress on to more detailed drawings from these great basic skills. If you are looking for a book that will reignite your creative spark then again I think this book would be good. It takes you right back to basics and gets you to open up your mind and be free with your mark making which is essentially the start of all art. -- Kerri-Ann Betty * Betty's Books *Table of ContentsMeet Amy 8 Introduction 10: What is Slow Drawing? 12; Tools and Materials 14; Weaving Slow Drawing into Your Day 16 Slow Drawing Warm-Ups 18: Intention-setting Visualisation 20; Drawing with Curiosity 22; Questions for Reflection 24; Looking for Inspiration in Natures 25 Slow Drawing Patterns 28: Slowing Down and Tuning In Through the Senses: Fan Pattern 30; Asking ‘What If...?’ Cobble Pattern 34; Be an Art Explorer: Twist Pattern 38; Where is Your Edge? • The Art of Sumi-e: Beautiful Ink Painting Using

Search Press Ltd The Art of Sumi-e: Beautiful Ink Painting Using

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this beautiful book, Naomi Okamoto passes on her experience and knowledge of Sumi-e – traditional Japanese ink painting that uses only ink, white space and simple brushstrokes to capture the essence of an object, person, animal or scene. With her deep understanding of both the technical and spiritual aspects of this ancient art, she guides the reader expertly through the materials required and the techniques involved, successfully conveying as she does so the cultural and historical background to this exquisite artform. There are numerous ink paintings and simple exercises throughout, making this book ideal for anyone wishing to acquire the skills associated with Sumi-e, as well as an understanding of the philosophy behind it.Trade ReviewArtist and educator Okamoto’s guide explores sumi-e, a type of Japanese ink drawing done exclusively with brushes and ink washes that combines calligraphic lines and blank space in subtle drawings and paintings. In this quiet, restrained art form related to Zen Buddhism, reality is conveyed through suggestion and simplification rather than through detail or precision. Numbered, sequenced drawings guide the reader’s hand in projects presented step-by-step. Lots of written description accompanies these designs for a gentle introduction to the technique. Materials, special techniques, composition, and color are discussed. Subject matter includes still life, landscapes, figures, flowers, and animals. VERDICT Artistically inclined readers hoping to try something different will find many possibilities in this volume. * Library Journal USA *August 2015 The Art of Sumi-e by artist Naomi Okamoto, describes the traditional painting technique that uses only ink, white space and simple brushstrokes. It aims to capture the essence of its subject based on spiritual processes within the artist: simplifying what is in front of you then using your won intuitive expression. There's plenty of good advice on the materials and supports you will need to get you started. The author then describes how to use the ink and brush, showing clearly how to adjust the pressure to make the marks you want, and inviting you to copy originals to familiarise yourself with the techniques. Themed exercises follow, including still life, landscapes and figures before moving on to colour in Japanese ink painting, flowers animals and landscapes. The book closes with ideas of motifs for cards and stationery plus that all-important seal to personalise your work. The book makes an ideal introduction to the art of Sumi-e with a systematic approach and simple exercises and is well illustrated throughout. * Leisure Painter, The *July 2015 Sumi-E is what we generally regard as the classic Japanese art of ink painting that uses a simple medium, the white of the paper, and carefully crafted and placed brushstrokes to create an image. The essence of it is just that, the essence of the subject, which is usually a natural form. This is a complete guide that includes advice on materials – particularly the specialised brushes and papers – as well as instruction in the basics of painting with ink, both black and colour. From here, a series of exercises gets you practising with shapes – a fish with a single stroke for instance. Naomi also includes the philosophical aspects of Japanese painting, which is as much a state of mind as a technical exercise. In the foregoing example, for instance, it is she, not the imagined fish, that feels the touch of the water. It’s a hard concept to convey, but she does it rather well. As your skills and confidence (and you need to be confident to achieve the single-stroke structure) develop, you’ll move on to flowers, animals, landscapes and even figures. These last are perhaps the most rewarding as they turn the whole idea of figurative work on its head, with less becoming more and detail only barely hinted at. This is as comprehensive a guide as you could wish to a fascinating and absorbing art form. * Artbookreview.net *

  • Drawing and Painting Animals with Expression

Search Press Ltd Drawing and Painting Animals with Expression

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisMarjolein Kruijt's deep and abiding love of animals is obvious in this book, which will teach you the technical aspects of drawing domestic and wild animals, such as different breeds of dog and cat, and long and short fur. In addition, it will help you to capture their inner nature. Trade ReviewArtist Kruijt approaches animals with admiration, pulling inspiration from their ability to be always “in the moment.” The value of working from observation, whether outdoors on location, in zoos, at home with your pet, or in a museum with taxidermied specimens, is emphasized. Photography is discussed as a reference tool, but readers are cautioned to be interpretive and sparing with its use. Early chapters discuss animal anatomy and behavior, accompanied by lots of successful sketches and paintings. The final section is full of step-by-step demonstrations. Tips, such as animal-specific color palettes, are provided throughout. VERDICT Animal lovers of all artistic skill levels will want to check out this guide. * Library Journal USA *Issue 10 - July 17 We've all heard that famouns showbiz saying 'Never work with children or animals'. But Marjolein Kruijt owers her livelihood to the latter, and begins her book to the 'inspiring beauty' of creatures great and small. Split into easy-to-use chapters, she includes a list of useful materials, as well as a comparison of sources of inspiration ranging from the excitement of location based sketching, to using photography for reference. The text is punchy, with each spread dominated by photography, sketches and artwork relating to different aspects of animal portraiture. Much of the focus is on personality, with whole chapters dedicated to cats and dogs, as well as a more general wildlife section. But there are also plenty of useful tips on general topics such as colour, texture, composition and anatomy. With 13 years experience, Marjolein also weaves in a few tales animal painting exploits. And to prove she practices what she preaches, the book concludes with walkthroughs of some of her favourite pieces. A great guide for any animal loving painter. * Paint & Draw *Apr-17 This remarkably comprehensive guide is not for the beginner. Animas have a variety of facial expressions and getting them right is as important as it is in painting a human portrait. As well as form and perspective, the set of the face can make the difference between a successful and unsuccesful result. The variety here is astonishing. From domestic to wild animals and even birds. Most of the illustration is by example and there are few lessons and demonstrations, though there is a lot of discussion of different species and breeds. Media, it should be noted, are mainly pastels and oils, which may affect your decision on its relevance to you. The thoroughness and variety may outweigh this though. * The Artist *Feb 2017 Marjolein Kruijt's latest book looks at that most difficult of subjects capturing often unwilling subjects on paper. Although not for the absolute beginner because of inherent difficulty of the subject, Marjolein shows us how to draw both domestic and animals, with subtleties that help you capture their personalities. Using a variety of media, including pencil and charcoal, ink, pastel, oil and watercolour, Marjolein covers basic materials and techniques, how to make sketches of animals, use photographs as inspiration as well as how to create your own style. There's information on specific areas, such as including space and background, anatomy and coat, fur and feathers and drawing at the zoo, as well as step-by-step projects for you to work on. * The Leisure Painter *Bring your animal portraits to vibrant life with this book of tips. Whatever your medium there are ways to add more character and realism, and this book is full of ideas. It is not for the beginner but for those who are either artists who want to start depicting animals or for those who want to add that extra spark. The book starts with an overview of what materials are around and hints on what to buy and why, then moves on to where you are going to work. This section weighs up the pros and cons of working outdoors, from live animals, stuffed or photographs. The rest of the book deals with a variety of animals and how best to depict what makes them special and unique. There is a chapter each for cats and dogs, then a third covering zoo and wild animals and birds. Most of each chapter is filled with inspiring paintings and drawings each with a caption explaining what has been done to achieve the look. This is followed by a piece on backgrounds, drawing fur, feathers and anatomy and how to capture characteristics when sketching. The final chapter contains demonstrations, which are staged projects showing how to bring together what you have learned. Each has a number of good sized captioned photographs so you can build up your work bit by bit, plus a list of what you need. Instead of giving the exact colors there is a looser list elsewhere in the book to refer back to. There are six projects done in a variety of media depicting three dogs, two cats and a rabbit. This is a handsomely produced book that will appeal to the intermediate and up artist which falls down in one area; it has truly tiny print. * myshelf.com *This book tackles the skilful area of painting and drawing of achieving expression and character. It deals solely with animals and is ideal for any animal lover and painter. Capture what distinguishes one pet or wild animal from another. Instructions include using various mediums. If your animal paintings or drawings look wrong, this is the book for you as the tips will perfect your techniques and help you portray realistic yet natural-looking animals. I would not call myself an animal painter, but this book had me wanting to be one - from the freedom of the sketches, to step-by-step detailed drawings, this book is very inspiring. Cats, birds, horses, dogs, lizards, elephants and more there is so much to learn from this book. 33 pages of cats, 23 of dogs and 25 of wildlife with superb illustrations of the artist's work. There are 6 step-by-step demonstrations using watercolours, pastels and oils, depicting dogs, cats and a rabbit. A short guide to using basic shapes means that this book is good for confident beginners and those who need to learn more about progressing their work to the next level. A superb book that is great value for money and one you will use for a long time. * YarnsandFabrics.co.uk *There are two things that need to be said about this from the outset. First, it’s not a book for the beginner and second, most of the illustrations are in pastel or oil. Neither of these counts against it, of course, but they do define its market. There is a lot more to what is in fact a comprehensive guide – just about every species and many breeds are here, from domestic to wild animals and even birds. As becomes clear, expression is as important with animals as with people and this is much more than anthropomorphism – there are no cute portraits here. It is perhaps as important as form, structure and perspective, aspects at which Marjolein Kruijt is equally adept. Most of the illustration is by example and the few lessons are at the end of the book. The bulk of the text discusses the structure and form of both the subject and the resulting painting. Although there is a very useful introduction to materials and media, Marjolein tends to assume that you will know about methods of application. If you do, you’ll be thankful not to find 50% of the book taken up with things you don’t need to be told. If you don’t, well, to be honest, capturing character in such detail is probably not the skill you most need to learn. Think of it as a masterclass. This is a serious book that takes its subject and its readership seriously and is all the better for that. * www.artbookreview.net *This book is stunning. I love the mix of completed paintings and initial dynamic sketches. From showing beginners how to do quick sketches with simple shapes to the tricks of mastering difficult shadows on white or black fur, this book is an inspiration. Step by step tutorials in watercolours, pastels and oils are all clear and easy to follow. Although I don't use these mediums myself, the mastery of them is amazing and I want to try pastels now! An absolute must have for anyone thinking of drawing or painting fur and feathers, for both beginners and artists. Could not put the book down for two hours! Amazed at the size of the book. Value for money. * Jules Hollinshead *Absolute must for an aspiring animal artist! Beautiful visuals show the different ways in which you can structure your pieces and use a variety of materials to create a masterpiece. Step-by-step tutorials help aid your understanding of the sections at the end. As there are only a few step-by-step tutorials I think this would be best for a more experienced artist as this book I feel is aimed for you to develop you're work further by considering composition, background and tone rather than the basics of just drawing an animal. Would definitely recommend to people interested in refining their work. * Lynda Colley *Table of ContentsThe artist 9 Materials 11 Workshop equipment 13 Charcoal and pencil 13 Ink 14 Pastel 15 Oil 17 Watercolour 19 On location 21 Where can you draw animals? 22 Why work from observation? 23 Which materials? 24 Basic techniques of drawing 25 Stuffed animals 30 Using photographs as inspiration 34 Your own style 37 Cats 38 Inspiration 40 Using space and backgrounds 46 Anatomy and coat 53 Capturing characteristics in your sketches 60 Dogs 62 Inspiration 64 Using space and backgrounds 70 Anatomy and coat 76 Capturing characteristics in your sketches 82 Wildlife 86 Inspiration 88 Using space and backgrounds 94 Anatomy, fur and feathers 100 Drawing at the zoo and on your travels 104 Demonstrations 112 Borzoi in oil 114 Collies in pastel 118 Maine Coon in watercolour 122 Norwegian Forest cat in pastel 126 Rabbit in oil 132 Dog in oil 136 Biography 143

Book SynopsisThe third and final volume of All Over Coffee presents some of the most beloved and never-before-collected pieces from the weekly series. Originally published in the San Francisco Chronicle, this timeless work, which includes collaborations with many prize-winning authors, is now collected for the first time into a new gorgeous hardcover edition."[Paul] Madonna, Bayview-based artist, illustrator, writer and award-winning author, is renowned for his long-running city-inspired comic strip series ‘All Over Coffee.’ Once described by Madonna as ‘a comic strip without the comic,’ the series paired intricate sketches of The City—a street corner, a view of Alcatraz or a deserted alleyway—with poignant, poetic text. The infusion of art and literature challenged typical comic strip conventions, attracting a regional cult following and setting Madonna on a path of artistic discovery. The third and final installment [of the series], You Know Exactly, launched this month."—San Francisco Examiner"All Over Coffee was in many ways a gift to the city. It immortalized the San Francisco that locals see every day; not the one most commonly depicted in movies and on TV. Because of its grounding in familiar corners, sidewalks and liquor stores, Madonna's art can also ask viewers to explore their own psyche, or to suspend their disbelief, or to go on a journey with him they weren't expecting. And sometimes, just sometimes, it'll be so close to home, you'll think he's made a personal visit."—KQED Arts & Culture"[A]n impressive coffee-table style volume, You Know Exactly, the Third Collection of All Over Coffee is an inherently fascinating book to browse through."—Midwest Book ReviewYou Know Exactly enigmatically melds art, story, and travel to capture the profundity reflected outside and resting deep within the soul. With original writings plus collaborations with award-winning writers including Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Cheryl Strayed, Andrew Sean Greer, Robert Olen Butler, Kristen Tracy, Daniel Handler (otherwise known as Lemony Snicket), and more, artist and writer Paul Madonna pairs words with exquisitely rendered cityscapes to create a poignant, thought-provoking showpiece. Each page offers something unique: short stories, poems, fleeting thoughts, and one-liners displayed alongside pen and ink drawings that travel from San Francisco to New York, from Paris to Tokyo. The effect coalesces into a mesmerizing work that you’ll want to return to again and again.Trade ReviewPraise for previous works by Paul Madonna:"Paul Madonna is a pen master. His work is difficult to categorize but that he was MAD magazine's first art intern may help explain his ability to capture human experience in its odd fullness."—Boston Globe"Miraculously exquisite. . . dreamy and surprisingly emotional."—Salon"When his international images are paired with his sparse, poetic words, the effect is haunting. Though Madonna travels the globe, it's not the famous sites or wonders that catch his attention. . . and the experience of being in his world is mesmerizing."—Oprah.com"A deeply satisfying, ruminative meditation on life seen through the eyes of appealing, but imperfect, characters. . . highly recommended."—Foreword Reviews"About detail, willful eccentricity, an almost rococo approach to line, and a steadfast devotion to art for its own sake, beauty as its own reward. Paul Madonna's work gives itself fully to all of these notions."—Dave Eggers"Madonna captures snapshots in time as he explores the relationship between image and text. . . that's so gorgeously rendered in Madonna's precise yet fluid pen-and-ink style, it feels like it could be anywhere and everywhere."—Publishers Weekly"Explores the nature of the creative process and is a blend of artistic media, with more than 100 ink-on-paper illustrations of locations in China, Japan and Thailand interspersed throughout the novel."—Shelf Awareness"Almost any book is sure to please the bookish, but a book that can pique the interest of bibliophiles is as precious as a padparadscha sapphire. Here are some such gems. . . Artist and author Paul Madonna pens a mystery novel full of unexpected plot twists and lively characters accompanied by more than 100 strikingly rendered drawings that bring this novel to life. This tale of love, murder, books, and art is presented in a three-volume box set."—Publishers Weekly, Holiday Gift Guide (Illustrated Books)"Blown away by Paul Madonna's new book Come to Light. [Madonna] blends a mystery novel with his usual stunning artwork--highly recommended."—Mike Krieger, co-founder and former CTO of Instagram

Book SynopsisBeasley’s Vaqueros presents the life and work of South Texas artist Ricardo M. Beasley. Between roughly 1940 and 1980, Beasley produced dozens of pen-and-ink drawings of working vaqueros, the Tejano cowboys of South Texas. His vibrant, action-packed scenes capture the dangers as well as the joys of working with cattle, horses, and an often unforgiving landscape of cactus and mesquite. In addition to a selection of Beasley’s work, historian AndrÉs Tijerina has collected and translated an extensive interview with the artist and several of his poems. Despite having lived much of his life after World War II, Beasley’s art and words capture a world in which people and events from decades before his time are just as immediate—perhaps even more so—than events of the present day. More than just a testament to the talents of a singular, self-taught artist, Beasley’s Vaqueros is a record of vaquero life in South Texas that spans the centuries.

  • Chinese Brush Painting through the Seasons

Search Press Ltd Chinese Brush Painting through the Seasons

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisChinese brush painting is a traditional style of painting that has evolved over many centuries. Artists use ink and colour pigments to paint onto rice paper or silk. An important characteristic of this kind of painting is holding and directing the brush in the right way to produce strokes that are delicate and refined. The four co-authors of this book – Sun Chenggang, Ning Xiangying, Ning Jialu and Miao Hongbo – are particularly gifted proponents of this style, which has connections with traditional calligraphy. Chinese brush painting typically includes themes such as birds, plants and flowers, landscapes, fruit and vegetables and fish. This book explores these themes through the four seasons, with the peony depicted in spring, the lotus flower in summer, the vegetable harvest in autumn and the bamboo bud in winter. Many of the subjects are symbolic and have connotations of good fortune, auspiciousness, good health, a long life, a good harvest, a flourishing family, wealth – even immortality! Explained in the introduction to each project, the symbolism is followed by clear, step-by-step instructions and illustrations. There is a short section at the beginning of the book describing tools, materials and techniques to help readers achieve the almost ethereal beauty and delicacy of this style of painting.Trade ReviewIt’s been a long time since there was a book on Chinese painting, but they were once all the rage. This one has been worth the wait and is about as authentic as you can get, being adapted from a series of Chinese originals. For all that, the approach is accessible for the Western reader and, although the introduction to materials contains some terms that may not be familiar, more obtainable alternatives are suggested. Interestingly, where colour is used, the authors prefer gouache as being more like the heavier pigment used in China itself. Previous, more Western-based books have used transparent watercolour. The book consists of a series of simple demonstrations and, of course, simplification is very much to the fore. As a result, although each project is covered in no more than three or four pages, there is no sense of foreshortening and the number of steps is perfectly adequate. Chinese art involves working quickly and there simply isn’t that much to do – there’s no room for fiddling when you’re contending with a large, soft brush. This is a welcome return to the world of Chinese painting which, even if you don’t want to pursue it in much depth, offers palate-cleansing simplification that can only refresh your own work. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *The centuries-old art of Chinese brush painting is clearly explained in this new book from Search Press. The book explores traditional themes such as birds, plants, flowers, landscapes, fruit, vegetables and fish, through the four seasons. Using ink and colour pigments to paint onto rice paper or silk there are plenty of projects to work through including the peony depicted in spring, the lotus flower in summer, vegetable harvest in autumn and the bamboo bud in winter. Each demonstration includes an introduction to the symbolism involved plus clear step-by-step instructions. * Leisure Painter, February 2023 *The Chinese style of painting has always been popular in the West for its simplicity and elegant use of form and colour. Guides have ranged from comprehensive, which explain the philosophy and mindset behind the work, to those which emulate the style, while retaining more familiar ways of working. Despite being based on a series of Chinese publications, this falls more into the latter category than the former. The lessons are straightforward and thoroughly practical. Working methods are easy to pick up and materials have been adapted for what you will find available. The demonstrations are short, but the simplicity of the work lends itself well to no more than half a dozen steps. Subjects include trees, flowers and animals. This is a worthwhile addition to the fairly considerable library of books available and will suit those who want to gain experience of this thoroughly rewarding way of working. * The Artist, March 2023 *There are few craft books that showcase an art form as delicate and beautiful as Chinese Brush Painting Through the Seasons. Authors Sun Chenggang, Ning Xiangying, Ning Jialu and Miao Hongbo talk you through a season each, via 30 gorgeous projects that spotlight the spectacular variety of nature. * Crafts Beautiful, March 2023 *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Tools and materials 8 Basic skills 12 Spring 14 A Fortune in Bloom 16, Loquats 19, Bringers of Spring 24, Good Ripe Fruit 26, Orchid Portrait 29, Rest in the Plantain Shade 32, Wisteria in Purple 35 Summer 38 Green Leaves, Morning Glory 40, Wishes for Prosperity 43, Lotuses in Summer 46, Reflecting on the Lotus 49, Grapes 52, Lotus Fan 55, Begonia 58, Landscape 61 Autumn 64 Full of Autumn Light 66, Heavensent Seeds 69, Autumn Harmony 72, Double Blessings 75, Festival Feast 78, Crab in the Plantain Shade 81, Garden Bounty 84, Clear Spring, Shaded Scales 87 Winter 90 Blossom in the Bitter Cold 92, Camellia 95, Sweet Flag, Sweet Cherry 98, Good Wishes and Long Life 101, Farmhouse Flavour 104, Goose in the Reeds 107, Good Fruit for a Good Life 110

Book SynopsisBauhaus artist Friedl Dicker-Brandeis The work of Friedl Dicker-Brandeis (1898–1944) occupies a key position in the broader history of the Austrian avant-garde while also deepening our understanding of modernism. Her work covers an impressive range of media and genres in the visual and applied arts. Influenced by her studies at Vienna’s Kunstgewerbeschule (which later became the University of Applied Arts Vienna), the Itten Private School, and the Bauhaus in Weimar, she worked as a painter, stage designer, architect, designer in Vienna and Berlin, in exile, and as a deportee. This book explores the heterogeneity of Dicker’s work, reconstructs her artistic strategies and references to aesthetic and political discourses from the 1920s to the 1940s, and documents for the first time her works in the collection of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Portrait of her work and collection catalog, dedicated to the artist, designer, and architect Friedl Dicker-Brandeis Essays by Julie M. Johnson, Robin Rehm, Daniela Stöppel, and others To accompany an exhibition in Vienna and Zurich; awarded as one of the most beautiful books in Austria in 2022

  • Hanna Nagel

    De Gruyter Hanna Nagel

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHanna Nagel’s focus as an artist was on drawing and graphic prints. Like no other woman artist of her time, she examined the relationship between men and women as well as the problematic balancing act between professional work and motherhood. Her work following her studies in Karlsruhe was at first characterized by objective precision. With her move to Berlin, she, however, distanced herself from the stringent drawing style of Neue Sachlichkeit. The oft-biographical works executed with a brush and pen in Indian ink are formally more complex and painterly, whereby the impression of these so-called "Dunkle Blätter" (Dark Works) corresponds to the narratively and symbolically charged topics chosen. The focus of the exhibition and catalogue is on the works of the 1920s and the early 1930s.

  • Becoming CoBrA: Anfänge einer europäischen

De Gruyter Becoming CoBrA: Anfänge einer europäischen

Book SynopsisCoBrA is one of the most important artist groups of Art Informel. The name is derived from the first letters of the three capital cities of Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam — the centers from which the CoBrA artists took action. Little is still known here in Germany about the concrete origins of the art movement. The exhibition and catalogue of the same name attempts a broad examination of the group’s origins: with the focus on the reconstruction of the movement prior to its official establishment in November 1948. It aims to present a representative cross-section of the movement that includes the largest possible number of artists as well as the greatest possible concentration of forms of expression and topics characteristic of the movement. Roughly fifty paintings, thirty sculptural works, fifty graphic reproductions and photographs as well as individual ceramics and textiles from international collections are presented.
