Book SynopsisAn unapologetic guide to the first year of motherhood, Enough About the Baby is a newborn book for women who recognize the necessity of self-careeven if sometimes the rest of the world does not. Superheroes don't have babies; real and imperfect non-superhumans do. When we come to terms with this, the result is a happier and less traumatizing start to motherhood. Becky Vieira, the mom behind the popular Instagram account @wittyotter, provides actionable advice for new parents on what to expect after pregnancy and how to successfully navigate the frustrations and challenges that come with having a baby. Vieira draws on her own experiences and interviews with moms and experts to get to the bottom of the toughest and most taboo topicsfrom managing nosey in-laws and an anxious partner to surviving the first postpartum poop and when to seek out treatment for postpartum depression. This book is filled with hacks, tips, and tricks that only the most seasonedand enlightenedmom knows. (Ever hTrade Review“It's not just the baby who goes through tons of changes in that first year. If you've been pregnant, given birth and are adjusting to new motherhood at home, Becky Vieira offers the raw, unvarnished truth that is often glossed over by those who just want to focus on the magic of being a new parent. No topic is too taboo, and Vieira covers everything from getting past that first postpartum poop to dealing with unsolicited advice from relatives.”—Good Housekeeping "Vieira’s candor about her struggles as a new mother and the input from experts results in a volume that’s at once practical and deeply personal. This is a must for new and mothers-to-be."—Publishers Weekly “Becky Vieira has been an enduring and beloved voice in the postpartum community advocating for women through her personal experiences, precise observations, and unequivocal humor. Her new book, Enough About the Baby, is a solid reference for new moms who are navigating this challenging time in their lives, and who seek comfort from those with shared experiences and the wisdom to accept the ups and downs as part of this spectacular journey of motherhood. Perhaps the most important message Vieira teaches the reader is: ‘It’s okay to be selfish. It’s okay for this journey to also be about you. In fact, you and your baby will actually thrive if you do.’”—Karen Kleiman, author of Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts “Becky shatters the crippling silence surrounding the truth about motherhood. Finally, someone is honestly telling new mums what they need to know, not what we think they want to hear. We’re all tragically vulnerable to the darker aspects of this journey, and no amount of privilege can stop the crippling depression, anxiety, and loneliness that many mothers face. One of the biggest problems is that people shy away from talking about this, and mums don’t know what to expect or how to find help. Finally, we have a book that blows the lid off topics many have considered taboo—and now this important conversation can begin. Becky is a vocal advocate for maternal mental health and provides readers with what we all need: information, resources, support, and compassion. This is a book I wish I had as a new mum, and it gives me hope that future mothers won’t suffer like some of us did.”—Anna Paquin, Academy Award–winning actress and mom of twins “Enough About the Baby brilliantly combines humor and compassion to present the authentic reality of the first year of motherhood. Becky passionately advocates for moms, empowering us to value our health and welfare just as much as our baby’s—and it’s about time someone stepped up to do this! This isn’t just helpful information for expecting and new moms, it’s essential reading.”—Laura Benanti, Tony Award–winning actress, author, and mom of two “Becky Vieira is the brutally honest mom friend that EVERY new mom needs in her corner. That friend who won't sugarcoat things. Her book is full of useful information, personal insights, and Becky’s unique brand of humor. Enough About the Baby is absolutely going to be my new go-to baby shower gift.”—Tara Clark, author of Modern Mom Probs “Gone are the days of flowery, intrusive, peppered-with-toxic-positivity baby advice. We’ve entered a new era in this society of ours, ladies—the era of compassionate truth, which Becky Vieira so eloquently and artistically delivers in a brilliant roadmap for new moms. By blending her own experience, good and bad, with the brutally honest truth of what motherhood is really like in the first year, Vieira leaves no stone unturned when it comes to what to expect when you’re expecting and the candid details of what bringing baby home truly means for mama, and hits the nail on the head by reminding us that it’s enough about the baby—let's make sure mom is getting what she needs to survive this new world.”—Michelle Dempsey-Multack, author of Moms Moving On “This is an honest, eye-opening look at how raising a baby is equal parts maddening and heartwarming. It will make any parent say, ‘I am not alone.’”—Clint Edwards, bestselling author of Fatherish “The hilarious and practical how-to guide that every new parent needs. I cry-laughed, nodded, and was wowed by the advice. This is the perfect gift for every mother-to-be. Where was this book when I was a new mom?”—Sally Hepworth, New York Times bestselling author and mom of three “I so wish I had this book when I was pregnant with my first. Becky gives all the far-too-honest (and therefore helpful) advice that moms never seem to get. So much is written about the baby’s journey; I love that she’s focused on the mom’s journey through the first few years instead. I would call this book laugh-out-loud funny if it weren’t so on-the-nose about just about everything related to new motherhood.”—Kate Auletta, Editor-in-Chief, Scary Mommy

Canongate Books Salt On Your Tongue: Women and the Sea

Book Synopsis'An ode to the ocean, and the generations of women drawn to the waves or left waiting on the shore' Guardian In Salt On Your Tongue, Charlotte Runcie explores what the sea means to us, and particularly what it has meant to women through the ages. In mesmerising prose, she explores how the sea has inspired, fascinated and terrified us, and how she herself fell in love with the deep blue. This book is a walk on the beach with Turner, with Shakespeare, with the Romantic Poets and shanty-singers. It's an ode to our oceans - to the sailors who brave their treacherous waters, to the women who lost their loved ones to the waves, to the creatures that dwell in their depths, to beachcombers, swimmers, seabirds and mermaids. Navigating through ancient Greek myths, poetry, shipwrecks and Scottish folktales, Salt On Your Tongue is about how the wild untameable waves can help us understand what it means to be human.Trade ReviewThis motherhood memoir-cum-nature journal about the connection between women and the sea is bracing and poetic . . . Unbound Dead Babies and Seaside Towns

Book SynopsisWhen Alice Jolly's second child was stillborn and all subsequent attempts to have another baby failed, she began to consider every possible option, no matter how unorthodox.Shot through with humour and full of hope, Dead Babies and Seaside Towns is an intensely personal account of the search for an alternative way to create a family. The journey ultimately leads her and her husband to a small town in Minnesota, and to two remarkable women who offer to make the impossible possible. In this beautifully written book, Alice Jolly describes with a novelist's skill the events that many others have lived through – even if they may feel compelled to keep them hidden. Book SynopsisIf you are watching your partner, daughter, sister or friend struggle through postnatal depression (PND) it can leave you feeling powerless and unsure how best to help. This book shows you how to best support your loved one in this overwhelming and frightening time.Specialist maternal mental health psychologist Dr Jenn Cooper first explains what PND is and what it might look like. In many cases, the initial challenge is identifying that your loved one is struggling with something more than the 'baby blues'. Often mothers simply don't have the capacity to notice that what they're feeling is beyond the 'normal'. So, that is where you, as their support system, come in – with the benefit of some distance and objectivity that will allow you to see more clearly whether mum might be struggling.Dr Cooper then moves on to equip you with practical strategies to help your loved one, drawing on insights from mums with lived experience of PND. Through the advice in this book, you will learn how you can play a vital role in your loved one's recovery and, ultimately, help them enjoy motherhood in the way they deserve.

Book SynopsisThe sixth edition of the full-colour, authoritative pregnancy guide that has sold over 1.5 million copies to date by recognizing that one size fits all doesn''t apply to maternity care. Newest updates include information on COVID-19, the latest CDC guidelines for intervention and care, as well as updates to dietary guides, breastfeeding, surrogacy and much more.Parents love this book because it puts them in control; experts love it because it''s based on the latest medical research and recommendations from leading health organizations. Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn provides the information and guidance you need to make informed decisions about having a safe and satisfying pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period--decisions that reflect your preferences, priorities, and values.Unlike pregnancy guides that can overwhelm and alarm by telling you up front all the things that can possibly go wrong, this book first describes normal, healthy processes, their typical variations, and the usual care practices for monitoring them. Only then does it cover possible complications and the care practices and procedures for resolving them. Throughout, the presentation is crystal-clear, the tone is reassuring, and the voice is empowering. And the language is inclusive, reflecting today''s various family configurations such as single-parent families, blended families formed by second marriages, families with gay and lesbian parents, and families formed by open adoption or surrogacy. From sensible nutrition advice to realistic birth plans, from birth doulas when desired to caesareans when needed, from reducing stress during pregnancy to caring for yourself as well as your baby after birth, this pregnancy guide speaks to today''s parents-to-be like no other.

  • Natal Hypnotherapy The Labour Companion: For a Better Birth

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTo get the maximum benefit from this CD, you should learn the techniques from the Natal Hypnotherapy birth preparation CD and the book during the last trimester of you pregnancy. This CD can then be used to reinforce the techniques during the birth. There are three hypnosis tracks which can be listened to at different stages of labour and these have been designed to reflect the emotional stages you are likely to go through. The reduce adrenaline track is particularly useful if you are disturbed during the later stages of labour.Trade ReviewA.C Wishes to be Anonymous When the voice started as well and it matched the soothing voice on the preparation CD, my body automatically responded by relaxing and I found I was breathing more deeply. My husband said apart from one moan, all he could hear was heavy breathing - he even wondered if it was a false alarm and that it wasn't proper labourA" The first track was very good when I started labouring at home. The contractions were manageable and the cd was an ideal extension of the preparation cds that I had listened to previously. The imagery, soothing tones of the voice and reassurances definitely kept me calm and positive. The two other tracks were used when I arrived at the hospital and the complications became evident and I needed to stay in the zone. I continuously went back to them as my contractions became stronger and stronger and my partner used a number of the techniques (eg 3,2,1 relax) to great effect.A" Zoe Tapper I had a very start & stop labour for days which is difficult as I found it hard to keep my spirits up & stay focused. However for the 2 days that labour started for me and fizzled out the labour companion CD helped me stay focused & calm & helped stave off the disappointment of not going into full labour. I was beginning to wonder if the baby would ever arrive. 10 days after my EDD my waters broke with no accompanying pain I slept with the aid of the CD and woke at 4am with 2 pains 10 minutes apart. I called the midwife who came to the house (bearing in mind she had been on 2 previous days with mo result!) and I had very manageable pains every 10 minutes or so until 9am when she examined me again to say I was 3cm and favourable. I was disappointed as I thought it would take hours longer but as it was my 3rd baby the midwife thought baby would arrive within the hour. We went up to the bathroom and set up the gas and air and tens machine and sure enough 45 minutes later out she popped! I put my speedy labours down to hypnotherapy and great midwife support, both of which make for a fear free labour.A" Bella Jordan The first track I listened to when contractions were still relatively mild, even though at the time I thought they were quite strong! The track really helped me re-focus on what I had tuned into during the original CD. The 2nd track was really helpful just to hear the voice and the reminders to relax etc... The music also really helped. Although I have to admit I found it VERY hard to actually block out the pain... I definitely did it every now and again but it was almost easier to ride the contraction out feeling the pain, although it definitely felt better when I managed to control it!! Bearing in mind that I was sleep deprived as my early contractions had been going for days before I headed into the birth centre. The 3rd track was very helpful. I had it on regularly to bring me down off the ceiling. I would highly recommend that people buy this CD if they're buying the birth preparation CD, because I feel as though if I didn't have this CD more of my hypnotherapy prep would have gone out of the window.A" G.B. wishes to remain annonymous The labour companion CD really helped me to calm down and 'centre myself' once I realised that this was definitely it! It reminded me to use the breathing techniques and visualisations I had learned from the birth preparation cd. The cd helped me calm down instantly and got me into the right frame of mind to deal with labour. I had been really nervous about the possibility of going into a hospital, and had chosen the local midwife led unit in order to try to avoid a hospital birth. I obviously knew that transfer would still be a possibility, and was glad to have the birth companion cd available. However, meconium in the waters meant that I had to be transferred to hospital. An ambulance arrived to collect me, and despite my husband having to travel separately, I remained calm and positive. During the transfer, I went through transition. I remember this being very painful and uncomfortable, but not worrying. In the ambulance I had some 'gas and air', the only pain relief I used throughout the whole labour and birth. I arrived at the hospital at 1:30am in stage 2 of labour. I was attached to a fetal monitor, but the pads kept slipping. This meant the machine was showing a varying heart rate, but still I was able to stay calm and positive, and knew that this was a fault with the machine, and that my baby was absolutely fine. During this stage I experienced no pain at all, and after nearly 2 and a half hours of pushing, baby F was born in full health, weighing 8lb 8oz, with an APGAR score of 9/10! I unfortunately sustained a 3rd degree tear, requiring surgery, but I hadn't felt this during the birth, and (despite my prior fear of hospitals and medicalisation) approached the surgery with the same calm positivity as I had the birth!A" I was surprised to find that I accepted the news calmly, and did not panic, as I had been afraid I would. I am sure that this is attributable to the natal hypnotherapy cd's I'd used, specifically track 1 of the companion cd that had helped me to recall the birth preparation techniques I'd learned. Laura Nickell The excitement phase track helped remind me of all my preparation and get me in a positive mindset. Serious stage helped me stay focused when became intense and the Adrenaline helped me relax when scared. The birth preparation helped me the most, and the labour companion tracks reminded me of relevant stages so could focus my thoughts and remind myself what I'd learnt. I've recommended the cd and book to all my pregnant friends, I'm a worrier and it helped me immensely throughout. Thank youA" Kirsty Clifford I used your labour companion CD when I birthed my third son. As it was a very quick birth - 1 hour 50 mins from first contraction to him being born, I'm afraid I only listened to track 3 on the CD - I went straight into active labour with the first contraction, no time for the excitement phase! And as I was in transition in the lift on the way to the labour ward I wasn't able to concentrate on the CD player enough to change the track from repeat. . OK, firstly I found it immensely helpful to have the same music in the background to your birth preparation CD. Even though I was in the car I found that as soon as I heard the music I relaxed - I noticed my shoulders drop immediately, without even listening to any words. When your voice started as well and it matched the soothing voice on the preparation CD, my body automatically responded by relaxing and I found I was breathing more deeply. I wasn't always able to listen to the individual words on the CD, depending on where I was in the contraction - I dealt with them by really focusing on my breathing so zoned out sometimes - but key phrases such as 3,2,1 relax stood out and really seemed to work, I noticed myself going from grasping the door for dear life to relaxing my grip and resting my hands in my lap. My husband said apart from one moan, all he could hear was heavy breathing - he even wondered if it was a false alarm and that it wasn't proper labour! I kept the CD player on throughout the journey to the hospital, getting out of the car into the wheelchair, going in the lift and then in the labour room I had it on throughout the birth. I still heard the midwife and my husband and was able to respond to both of them, but in the background I could always hear the music and your voice. It was incredibly helpful as it seemed to just let my body get on with things without my needing to think about it - which was exactly what I wanted. I think all I said to the midwife was 'I'm pushing' and that was about it until he was born! I did have G&A but I was expecting to need that, I got a bit distressed in the lift as I was in transition (which I knew to expect) and the wheelchair went over a bump getting into the lift which distracted me, so I asked for gas as I knew from previous births that it helps me concentrate on my breathing. I didn't actually need it much since I was pretty much pushing as soon as I got there, and could feel every stage of his head and body coming out. As my body had done so well on it's own, I also felt confident enough to ask for physiological third stage which I had previously been concerned about, having had 2 x pphs. However, my body knew what it was doing and it all went fine, with no pph either. Again, I repeated 3,2,1 relax in my head to deal with the contractions to push it out and it seemed to automatically relax me. I was a little bit unsure as to whether natal hypnotherapy would work on me or not, as listening to the preparation CD in the weeks leading up to the birth I never felt 'hypnotised' - I was always scratching my nose, fidgeting in the seat and generally being aware of my surroundings despite my best attempts to sit still. I did however find them incredibly relaxing and surprisingly emotional - the first few times you spoke about the golden light warming my baby I was in tears! Given my concerns, when the time came I was amazed at how well it all worked - I genuinely didn't feel scared (even though I began to realise I was only just going to make it to hospital) and both my husband and the midwife were really surprised and impressed with how I coped as well. I have recommended hypnotherapy to anyone who has asked and cannot thank you enough for helping me to enjoy my birth so muchTable of ContentsTrack 1 - Introduction 02:24 Track 2 - Excitement phase 22:31 Track 3 - Serious phase 17:02 Track 4 - Reduce adrenaline 06:05

Book SynopsisYou may be worried about breastfeeding and worried that it might ‘not work’. This is a common feeling when you live in a society where breastfeeding is often sabotaged by incorrect information, patchy support from a stretched health service and powerful messages from formula companies. But it’s not a feeling that is entirely logical. We are mammals. We get our name from the dangly milk-producing bits. It defines us. I’m writing this book because I would like you to be as well-prepared as possible. I would like you to breastfeed for as long as you want to and as happily as possible. I want you to feel supported. Some of this new life with baby will be about flexibility and responsiveness and acceptance. If you are used to a world of schedules and decisions and goals, it may be a bit of a shock. Learn about human biology before you think it sounds bit too scary. Babies are the products of millions of years are evolution and we are too, if we can just tap into our instincts and trust them a little bit. Success comes when we tap into those instincts and when we know when to get help when our instincts aren’t answering all of our questions. Can everyone who wants to breastfeed make it work? No. It may not work out for every single person. Not everyone may be able to exclusively breastfeed due to medical issues. Most of these people can give their baby breastmilk though and I’ll talk this through as well. And let’s not start this journey by imagining you’ll be someone who won’t make it.

Book SynopsisSwedes are some of the world’s happiest people, and their children are no exception. Parenthood the Swedish Way will help you and your family embrace the Scandi style of child-rearing. Overwhelmed with conflicting advice about pregnancy and parenting? You are not alone. But don’t worry, two of Sweden’s leading doctors are here to help, debunking myths and offering practical advice in this fact-based, no-nonsense approach to birth, child health, and shared child-rearing from the progressive land in the North. Expectant and new parents will be relieved to hear the following: breastfeeding doesn’t protect against allergies; sterilising bottles and dummies is unnecessary in most countries; and if you think you shouldn’t drink alcohol when breastfeeding, you’ve been taken in by plain moralism and not scientific evidence. Dr Agnes Wold has been named Sweden’s Woman of the Year for her tireless work in women’s health. Paediatrician Dr Cecilia Chrapkowska runs one of the country’s most popular parenting blogs, and is a specialist on vaccinations. Together they present cutting-edge research from around the world that can guide you to make better parenting choices. Drawing on Sweden’s famously generous parental leave and enlightened social policies, they also demonstrate the importance of equal parenting, and provide practical tools for parents everywhere to share responsibility equally. Parenthood the Swedish Way is an egalitarian, myth-busting guide through the maze of challenges that parents face raising healthy, happy families in the twenty-first century.Trade Review‘These are things (the sterilising especially) I could have done with knowing all those times I was staring, eye a-twitch, while willing a kettle to boil at 3am as an infant mewled in my ear.’ -- Anna Whitehouse (mother_pukka) * Grazia *‘Doctors Chrapkowska and Wold do much to dispel the common misconceptions around child-rearing by providing a commonsense, scientific approach. Even if you’re not involved in the parenting business, there’s much to be gleaned from a Swedish take on this crucial undertaking.’ -- Dan Shaw * Happy Mag *‘Here, the two physicians have examined and summarised everything new parents need to know … From pregnancy and birth, to feeding and sleeping, to vaccines and illnesses, Parenthood the Swedish Way addresses all aspects of parenting and infant health in an empathetic and realistic way. New parents will appreciate this straightforward and thoroughly researched resource that picks apart outdated advice and debunks myths about parenthood.’ -- Melissa Norstedt * Booklist *‘Agnes Wold has been a guiding hand when I’ve been pregnant and had small children. A more comforting hand than various parenting bibles, a more allowing hand than the leaflets from the maternity care and the child health centres. She gives the parent more room to be a human being, and less bad conscience … What parents need is advice based on science and level-headed tips. And some encouragement.’ * Sydsvenskan *‘Are you of the opinion that the Trump administration rely on alternative facts much? That is nothing compared to what women are confronted by as soon as they get pregnant. In the parallel pregnancy reality the alt-facts are commonplace. ’Truths’ are constantly foisted on you, and shockingly enough they often turn out to be intrusive opinions, moralism, or pure inventions … If The Handmaid’s Tale is an exaggerated and dramatised reminder of the anxiety of becoming breeding stock, Wold & Chrapkowska’s book can be a crucial antidote. One by one, they deal with some well-known ’truths’ related to bearing and birthing that are in part being spread by social functions, e.g. the variety of advice on what you can eat and drink during pregnancy and breastfeeding — some are correct while other recommendations seem to have been inspired by Christian faith and morality rather than science.’ * Dagens Nyheter *
