Book SynopsisFrom exhilarating electrical storms to everyday drizzle, this book is the perfect entertaining guide to our favourite topic of small talk: the weather. Our moods are affected by it; our plans are ruined by it; our conversations undoubtedly cover it – the weather is integral to our everyday lives. But while we groan at clouds obscuring the sun, rejoice when the rain stops, and gasp at loud cracks of thunder, for many of us the systems behind these weather patterns are a complete mystery. The Weather Book breaks down all manner of meteorological phenomena with handy diagrams and explanations in simple layman’s terms. From electrical storms and cyclones to the everyday drizzle, and including fascinating anecdotes of weather at its most extreme, this is a practical and engaging guide to understanding all things meteorological. If you’ve ever wondered which old wives tales you can actually trust (does lightning really only strike once?) or wondered if there is any truth to the phrase ‘raining cats and dogs’ (in reality it’s more likely to be raining frogs), this book will answer all your weather related queries and teach you more about this endlessly fascinating topic.Trade ReviewA delightful miscellany... • A Cloud a Day Journal

Batsford Ltd A Cloud a Day Journal

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA cloudspotter's interactive journal. Our interest in clouds is more profound than we ever thought. Gavin Pretor-Pinney, founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society and author of A Cloud A Day has been spreading the word via social media and hugely popular TED talks, and the response has been revelatory. Following on from his very successful A Cloud A Day book, he wants readers to take time each day to look at the shifting skies. To take a moment, as he says. Then, using the prompts and space in the journal, record the cloud, weather, and importantly their thoughts on that day. It is the perfect mindful occupation. To help readers understand the clouds they are looking at, the book includes a hugely useful pin wheel device – a cloud selector – at the back of the journal. The device allows the reader to visually match the cloud they see in the sky with the cloud in the selector device, which has all the information about that particular cloud they need. From the cloudlets of the altocumulus clouds to the rarer Lacunosus cloud (holes surrounded by fringes of cloud). In amongst the prompts and spaces are stunning images of clouds with bits of poetry, science and folklore. It is the ideal interactive journal for those interested in clouds and the weather but also for those looking for the perfect way to spend 10 minutes of the day to reconnect with nature and the passing of the seasons. Praise for A Cloud A Day: '[This] charming little volume reminds us that self-care is as available as a glance out the window, no matter your age or infirmities' The New York Times ‘A confident celebration of our ever-changing skies... I defy anyone who reads it not to start taking furtive peeks out the window.’ Robert Leigh-Pemberton, Daily Telegraph

  • Reginald Sutcliffe and the Invention of Modern

Purdue University Press Reginald Sutcliffe and the Invention of Modern

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDespite being perhaps the foremost British meteorologist of the twentieth century, Reginald Sutcliffe has been understudied and underappreciated. His impact continues to this day every time you check the weather forecast. Reginald Sutcliffe and the Invention of Modern Weather Systems Science not only details Sutcliffe's life and ideas, but it also illuminates the impact of social movements and the larger forces that propelled him on his consequential trajectory. Less than a century ago, a forecast of the weather tomorrow was considered a practical impossibility. This book makes the case that three important advances guided the development of modern dynamic meteorology, which led directly to the astounding progress in weather forecasting-and that Sutcliffe was the pioneer in all three of these foundational developments: the application of the quasi-geostrophic simplification to the equations governing atmospheric behavior, adoption of pressure as the vertical coordinate in analysis, and development of a diagnostic equation for vertical air motions. Shining a light on Sutcliffe's life and work will, hopefully, inspire a renewed appreciation for the human dimension in scientific progress and the rich legacy bequeathed to societies wise enough to fully embrace investments in education and basic research. As climate change continues to grow more dire, modern extensions of Sutcliffe's innovations increasingly offer some of the best tools we have for peering into the long-term future of our environment.Table of Contents PREFACE INTRODUCTION: The Waiting CHAPTER 1. • Principles and Applications of Agricultural

New India Publishing Agency Principles and Applications of Agricultural

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWeather and climate are natural resources that are considered essential inputs in agricultural planning. They have a direct or indirect impact on all agricultural activities. Agrometeorology is concerned with the interactions between meteorological, hydrological, and pedological factors that influence production systems in agriculture and related sectors such as horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and forestry. The role of an agrometeorologist is to define these interactions, correlate physical environments with biological responses, and apply relevant meteorological skills to help farmers exploit weather conditions and improve agricultural production in terms of both quality and quantity. This book is primarily based on the syllabus of the undergraduate course Agricultural Meteorology and has been divided into 23 chapters that cover all aspects of agrometeorology. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the concepts, definition, importance, scope, history, and future needs of agrometeorology. Chapter 2 offers basic information on the atmosphere. Chapters 3 to 13 discuss weather parameters such as radiation, temperature, humidity, evaporation, fog and dew, pressure, wind, clouds, monsoon, and precipitation, and their importance in agriculture. Chapters 14 to 22 focus on applied aspects of meteorology, including climatic hazards, agroclimatic classification, micrometeorology of crops, weather in relation to crop pests and diseases, weather in relation to animal production, climate change, weather forecasting, remote sensing, and crop simulation modeling. Finally, Chapter 23 describes the features of an agrometeorological observatory.
