Book SynopsisA sumptuous full-colour art book containing the complete collection of almost 200 sketches, drawings, paintings and maps created by J.R.R. Tolkien for The Lord of the Rings. As he wrote The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien's mental pictures often found expression in drawing, from rough sketches made within the manuscript to more finished illustrations. Only a few of these were meant for publication; most were aids to help Tolkien conceive his complex story and keep it consistent. Many do not illustrate the final text, but represent moments of creation, illuminating Tolkien's process of writing and design. In addition to pictorial sketches, numerous maps follow the development of the Shire and the larger landscape of Middle-earth, while inscriptions in runes and Elvish script, and facsimile' leaves from the burned and blood-stained Book of Mazarbul, support Tolkien's pose as an editor' or translator' of ancient records. The Art of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien collects these drawings, inscriptions, maps, and plans in one volume. More than 180 images are included, all of them printed in colour from high-quality scans and photographs. Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull, two of the world's leading Tolkien scholars, have edited the book and provide an expert introduction and comments. Readers who have enjoyed The Art of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, with which the book is uniform, will find much of interest also in The Art of The Lord of the Rings.Trade Review‘How, given little over half a century of work, did one man become the creative equivalent of a people?’THE GUARDIAN ‘Demanding to be compared with English mythologies… at times rises to the greatness of true myth’FINANCIAL TIMES ‘A creation of singular beauty… magnificent in its best moments’WASHINGTON POST

  • Draw Yourself Calm: Draw Slow to Stress Less

Search Press Ltd Draw Yourself Calm: Draw Slow to Stress Less

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisDraw Yourself Calm welcomes readers into the mindful practice of slow drawing with 25 beautiful patterns inspired by nature. A practical and effective book for increasing creativity while reducing stress. With all the stimulation and stress of daily life, we each need to find ways of slowing down. Drawing simple, repetitive shapes relaxes the brain: attention flows away from sources of stress and centres on the act of putting pen to paper. The book is organized into three sections. The introduction covers slow drawing and mindfulness, and how to weave slow drawing into everyday life. Chapter 1 dives into slow drawing warm-ups and exercises aimed at helping readers notice what they see, feel, and hear while they draw. Chapter 2 takes the reader through 25 elegant and inspiring patterns of all kinds. These patterns can be approached in any order, and readers can choose how best to fit slow drawing into their lives, whether through daily or weekly drawing. Amy Maricle offers a playful, no-right-or-wrong approach that empowers readers to slow draw in a way that is creative, but not pressure-filled. This book offers a space for readers to nurture themselves creatively and spiritually by providing all the tools and inspiration needed to develop a slow drawing practice.Trade ReviewThe antidote or at least the reprieve from the daily stresses of life. I’m loving this book. It’s beautifully designed and printed. Really nice quality. The instruction is clear and I find it very accessible for me. It’s a tool of both great simplicity and complexity together and as I create, I decide where I want to go with each pattern. Do I just need some calming time with guidance and no decisions? Then I can follow the pattern prompt. Do I want to dig further to see what arises in and for me? Amy guides you along, opening up our ideas, and gently questioning. I don’t always know what I need until I begin with some slow drawing time but Amy has you covered in this book. Benefits I have found beyond my gratefully received calm are also improved focus, openness, dropping the idea of perfection, observation, time for free thinking and flow, and respite from the many challenges of each day. Taking the time in this practice really calms my (chronically ill) central nervous system making it an important asset in my health needs. What a bonus. The pricing is great. Affordable and yet of higher value than the cost! If there was something I didn’t like about the book I would include it but I’ve not found it yet! Definitely recommend. -- Jenny Malone * Amazon Customer Review *I was lucky enough to be given a copy of this book and I'm so grateful as it's been a revelation. The basic idea is to slow down the act of drawing so it becomes a mindful exercise. This allows you to experience the pen moving across the page, to watch each shape being formed. It takes some getting used to but once you concentrate on the act of drawing, rather than producing a drawing, you forget about perfection and instead enjoy what you are producing. The patterns provided in the book are just a stepping stone, or gentle hand holding, there is just so much scope for where you can go with this material. I have never found doodling particularly meditative as I have to keep on reminding myself how to draw the patterns but with this book it doesn't matter. That's both the joy and the drive behind this wonderful book. If you don't think you are artistic I would almost guarantee you'll love the images you produce following the guidance in this book, I certainly did and I've only just scratched the surface of what's on offer. -- Christine Jones * Amazon Customer Review *Just back from holiday, unpacking and usual yucky catch-up stuff, this was waiting on the mat. I couldn’t resist a quick flick through - oh my word! It’s beautifully printed, a delight to hold, intuitive and accessible, jam packed with advice, tips and design ideas. Amy truly is the master of her craft and shares her wealth of knowledge in this affordable book. Do yourself a favour - buy it and ‘draw yourself calm’ - my money says you won’t regret it. * Amazon Customer Review *For someone that gets quite stressed at work this is an absolute dream of a book, I wasn’t to sure to begin with but found myself immersed into a world of slow drawing… I actually couldn’t wait to get home to switch off and enjoy a bit of me time with my pencil and pad.. easy to follow exercises and for someone that is not an experienced drawer. I would highly recommend -- Juliet Naybur * Amazon Customer Review *An interesting book - a book designed to teach you how to relax while being creative - taking the stress away from drawing. It starts with mindfulness exercises - creative meditation, allowing your body and mind to flow on the page. If like me you get a bit stressed and tight when drawing this book will help set you free. Have a go. -- Barbara Marjoram * Amazon Customer Review *With all the stress of life, we each need to find ways of slowing down. Drawing simple, repetitive shapes relaxes the brain; attention flows from sources of stress to centre on putting pen to paper. This practical book aims to increase creativity while reducing stress. * Machine Knitting Monthly *I was really excited to receive this particular book 'Draw yourself calm by Amy Maricle' because it encourages everyone to get creative, you don't need any prior experience. I often speak with people in store who want to try something creative but don't feel confident enough and worry that what they create won't be 'good enough'. This particular style of art is a great place to start. Though this book is called 'Draw yourself calm' it is not about drawing detailed pictures, it is instead encouraging you to take part in what the author calls 'Slow drawing' which I would say is like mark making, similar to doodling or Zen tangling in a way. Mark Making is one of the most basic forms of art, which we are encouraged to do from a very young age, as soon as our little hands can hold a pencil, we begin the journey. Unfortunately, a lot of us as we get older forget that mark making can be fun, and as this book points out, therapeutic, and so we don't do it enough. It is something that all ages can do and enjoy. I love that this book is encouraging us to get back into it in a new mindful way. Another great thing about the activities included in this book is that they require a limited number of materials, so even those on a tight budget can have a go at them. If you have a pen and some scraps of paper you can give them a go. If you want to take your artwork up a notch then you could choose to invest in some of the recommended art materials detailed in the book. The author, Amy Maricle, is a qualified art therapist who is keen to promote mindfulness throughout the book so it has some great information on how taking part in the activities will help you de-stress and keep calm. There is a combination of full step-by-step activities and some guided suggested patterns to have a go at. There are plenty of photos and example pieces to inspire you too. At the end of the book, the author even gives you some tips and ideas on what you could do with your finished 'Slow Drawings' artwork which I think is fantastic. If you are totally new to art but want to give it a go, especially drawing of any kind, then I would recommend this book as a great starting point. You can take the skills you learn from it and progress on to more detailed drawings from these great basic skills. If you are looking for a book that will reignite your creative spark then again I think this book would be good. It takes you right back to basics and gets you to open up your mind and be free with your mark making which is essentially the start of all art. -- Kerri-Ann Betty * Betty's Books *Table of ContentsMeet Amy 8 Introduction 10: What is Slow Drawing? 12; Tools and Materials 14; Weaving Slow Drawing into Your Day 16 Slow Drawing Warm-Ups 18: Intention-setting Visualisation 20; Drawing with Curiosity 22; Questions for Reflection 24; Looking for Inspiration in Natures 25 Slow Drawing Patterns 28: Slowing Down and Tuning In Through the Senses: Fan Pattern 30; Asking ‘What If...?’ Cobble Pattern 34; Be an Art Explorer: Twist Pattern 38; Where is Your Edge? Throughout the book, the art of painting in pastels is taught through 13 beautiful, easy to follow step-by-step projects, and each section is accompanied by a selection of inspirational paintings by the three featured artists, in a rich variety of styles. It tells you how to get rid of mistakes and some of the pictures are amazing! Can't wait to give this a go! -- Victoria Easton * Amazon *I found the book very well set out, the way they take you through each piece step-by-step as the title states is very comforting. The book is an invaluable asset to my art equipment. -- Ken Fox * Amazon *This is a fabulous book, it gives great detail and advice. I've found it so helpful and in just over a week my technique is so much better. I would highly recommend this book for both beginners and those who want to master pastel painting. I have many Search Press books and they are all great. -- Anthony Green * Amazon *Nov 12 Always wanted to learn pastel painting? Here's the book for you. See the approach of three different artists and learn from each. Get straight into the basics with Peter Coombs. Use a limited palette to complete a finished step by step painting. Then have a go at a landscape, river or moonlit scene. Paul Hardy introduces more serene landscapes in pastel, including valleys, trees and water, autumn, a seascape and townscape. Margaret Evans looks at portraying flowers in pastel. Each artist includes techniques and information. There are 13 demonstrations in all and over 250 step by step clear photographs supported by galleries of finished paintings. This is useful for beginners upwards. This book has material published previously in four other books. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *Nov 12 If you want a book to help you develop your technique when painting with pastels, this is definitely the book to choose. A step by step guide, it is extremely comprehensive covering a wide range of styles and techniques. You can learn how to master creating tone, colour blending, composition and perspective. Then there are the individual sections on projects like painting landscapes, seascapes or flowers which give inspiration as well as useful tuition. There are 13 separate demonstrations which can be followed including using photographs and sketches, painting an old tree, a step by step guide to developing atmosphere when painting a moonlit stroll and even painting potted plant. The book links together the skills of three artists who bring their specialist knowledge to each subject covered. An very useful book for both novices and more experienced artists. * Monstersandcritics.com *Jan 13 Based on previously published material, Pastel Painting Step-by-Step brings together the work of Margaret Evans, Paul Hardy and Peter Coombs to help you to master the pastel medium. The three artists bring a good balance of work to the book, with Peter Coombs and Paul Hardy covering landscapes and townscapes, while Margaret Evans concentrates on flowers. Sections on using a limited palette, composition, colour mixing and colours for painting flowers, are interspersed with 13 demonstrations accompanied by good, clear step-by-step photographs. * Leisure Painter, The *Feb 13 Based on four earlier books on the subject by the above authors, this is a comprehensive guide to the art of using pastels. I like the way that what you need to buy and the differences between pastels is dealt with once only at the beginning, leaving out this part from the other three sections. You don’t need as much to take up this aspect of art as most others and there is even a helpful section on working with a limited palette, as well as another on what colors to buy for flower paintings. This is, like most Search Press books, a very hands-on approach with a minimum of theory for its own sake and a maximum of learning through actual painting. The book contains thirteen different projects to work through as well as many other things to try out, enabling even a beginner to get some professional-looking results. Each project tells you what you need and has a good number of stages, each with a short caption telling you what to do next and a photograph showing the picture with the next steps added. It is a great way to learn, and I particularly liked having three different approaches to play with and three different artists to learn from. This way there is less of a chance of slavish copying, and a good look at more than one style in pastel painting. Sometimes I think that compendiums take away too much from the individual books but this is an effective one for the above reasons. An excellent tool for those who want to learn pastel painting, or improve their technique. * Myshelf.com *Feb 13 Written by a team of three experienced artists, this thorough guide exposes the reader to a variety of viewpoints, techniques, subjects and tricks. It covers all the basics of this medium, including materials, color blending, mark making, texture, perspective and composition. Photographs throughout show the authors' working processes, as well as many completed pieces. Readers can follow along with 13 step-by-step pastel painting projects to create landscapes, seascapes, city scenes, floral still lifes, and more. VERDICT: Best for beginner and intermediate artists new to pastels. * Library Journal, USA *Table of ContentsIntroduction Materials Painting with Pastels Landscapes in Pastel Light in Pastel Flowers in Pastel Index

I have purchased a lot of books for new ideas or tips for techniques I'm not strong in to become a better artist. I pre-ordered this book sceptically because I like to read the reviews FIRST before I buy! HOWEVER... even if you're an advanced or professional artist, Lisa Ann Watkins doesn't hide or hold back in this book. "This is a must have" book and the best I own for tips, suggestions, ideas, you name it, it's in this book! I am so glad I took the chance and purchased this book. * Customer Review *Learning about the artist in the introduction was really interesting. Lots of detailed information throughout the book. Very helpful. * Customer Review *This thorough guide takes full advantage of the fine details that can be created with coloured pencils to produce lifelike and characterful animal portraits. What is particularly interesting is Lisa Ann's subtle use of non-natural colours to emphasize highlight, shading and contrast and, in some cases, to subdue the more obvious hues in order to capture specific characteristics. After an in-depth study of the materials and working methods this style demands, the book proceeds by way of a series of studies and demonstrations that explain further aspects and considerations. Considerable attention is paid to features such as fur, eyes and noses. The subjects are all domestic, with a variety of dogs and cats, but also a horse and cow. This is, however, a book – and an excellent one at that – about animal portraits, so this is perfectly fitting. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *Lisa Ann Watkins is an award-winning artist and tutor who specialises in coloured pencil drawing, enjoying a large and loyal following on social media as well as face to face through her many teaching workshops throughout the UK and America. In this beautifully produced book, Lisa tackles the popular subject of animal portraiture. With clear, simple techniques presented through ten studies, she demonstrates how to bring your portraits to life by focusing on texture, bright eyes and glossy noses. Building on her experience as a tutor, she confronts many of the problems students face when using coloured pencils and provides easy solutions. Five detailed step-by-step full animal portrait projects are included, with subjects ranging from dogs and cats to cows and horses. * Leisure Painter *This is one of the best coloured pencil tutorial books out there. The colours are stunning and every project well thought out and beautifully presented. My favourite art book by a mile! -- Tracy Hughes * Customer Review *Themes, subjects and media go in cycles, and coloured pencil is having its moment in the sun again. This is no bad thing, because it’s a medium that requires little in the way of equipment and is highly portable, meaning you can work almost anywhere. On top of that, as printing tolerances improve, it’s possible to reproduce on the page the fine detail pencils allow; this is a book that sparkles in that respect. Let’s assume, therefore, that you’re on board with the medium and subject matter presented here. You’ve also skimmed through the technical introduction because there’s never not something interesting, and perhaps new to you, to be found. Given the level of work here, you’re not a beginner, so the basic techniques are, even if not second nature, at least familiar. What you want now is to feel comfortable with your tutor and to get just the right amount of instruction to be able to follow the demonstrations and projects presented. As we’ve already cut to the chase once, we can do so again – you won’t be disappointed and should feel right at home. This is not the first book on animal drawing, so we should look for individualities. In that respect, the word Portrait in the title is significant. These are head and shoulder images that capture the character of the subject. I really, really want to say “sitter”, but you’re going to need a photograph for that. And, yes, Lisa does indeed work from photographs. The technical introduction includes some rather useful tips on getting the photo right in the first place and also on using software to combine images for dual portraits. She also suggests reducing a colour image to line to help with the initial outline drawing. I haven’t seen that in a book where it’s not the main subject before and it’s an extremely useful addition, especially when working from photographs is essential to the subject matter. The drawings themselves include a good variety of creatures (although not the donkeys on the cover). It’s worth saying that, although horses and cattle are here, dogs and cats predominate. Lisa goes into considerable detail about fur and hair (no feathers here) as well as features such as eyes, noses and ears. There are enlarged illustrations at all the points you need them. Lisa is a thoughtful teacher who has an excellent sense of exactly those points where a student is going to need help or a nudge. In terms of style, as befits a portrait, backgrounds are largely neutral, but without the pitfall of looking like a blank card. The use of colour can surprise you – careful combinations of greens and reds are frequently used to create realistic shades and shading. Highlights, in the eyes especially, add character as well as that sparkle I referred to earlier. Production-wise, the book has soft covers that open easily and deep flaps that make it feel nice in the hand. Obviously, it’s the content that matters, but ergonomics have a strong part to play in the way we react to a book and this one ticks all the right boxes. A lot of thought has clearly gone into it. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Sumptuous pages filled with colour pencil wisdom and creations – sign me up already! […] My humble abode is well insulated with art books at this point, and I was very happy to ass this volume from Lisa Ann Watkins to my collection. We are often referred to as a nation of animal lovers, and why wouldn’t we be … whether a meow, a moo, a neigh or a woof, animals do so enrich our lives and this book covers all these topics in style. It starts off with a great grounding on materials, covering what is available and why you might just fancy buying them. And we know resistance is futile and you are highly likely to succumb at some point, after all. Lisa has put some commonly used surfaces under the microscope here, and that certainly appeals to my Silent Witness-encourage forensic tendencies, a fusion of science and art is truly an empowering thing. Like many, I am full of aspirations about creating but also time-poor, so I was happy to see a section on using other media with coloured pencils. At times, I prefer to use colour pencil alone, and at other times, I do enjoy being able to get more done in the time I have available. Looking at you, dastardly backgrounds! A tour-de-force on mark-making with our beloved, wood-scented, heavenly pigmented pencils follows before a very useful section on getting great photos, with tips on how to turn those photos of Tiddles from B-movies extra to Hollywood A-lister. Colour selection and transferring is given due weight, preparing pencil-wielding artists for the creative magic that ensues. Ten excellent studies take us through some commonly faced animal portrait challenges, from different eyes, noses, and fur, before moving onto five in-depth projects covered from start to finish. The quality of the images and text are clear and doubtless will prove a great assistance to the reader. Whilst the book is clearly focussed on animal portraits, there is much fabulous information and insight within that can be applied to a range of subjects. So, in summary, I found this to be a very worthwhile addition to my collection. I do love Search Press art titles in terms of content and layout, and this is no exception. Easy to pick up and admire, but also rewarding to sit down and absorb, I thoroughly enjoyed it and it comes highly recommended. -- Spencer Philips * The Journal of the UK Colour Pencil Society, Talking Point *This is a wonderful book with excellent illustrations for anyone starting out with colour pencils. I only started using colour pencils earlier on this year and I wish I’d had this book from the start. It is very clear and precise and gives step-by-step instructions on the tutorials to achieve great artwork at the end. The writing is very concise with lots of helpful tips and tricks to help you along with your colour pencil art. It’s extremely useful for beginners but also for people that have been using this art medium for some time. The initial chapters take you through the materials needed and then there are tutorials to try and help you practice the techniques to create great artwork. There are also helpful instructions on how to transfer your subject from photos onto drawing paper. This is a wonderfully illustrated instructional book, and I would thoroughly recommend this to someone starting out on their colouring pencil art journey. This is a book I will refer to again and again. -- Angela Way * The Journal of the UK Colour Pencil Society, Talking Point *In this magnificent book, Lisa Ann Watkins will show you how to capture the character of a much-loved pet or bring a favourite animal to life on the page. Lisa's clear, simple techniques are presented through ten studies that demonstrate how to breathe life into your portraits by focusing on fur texture, bright eyes, and glossy nose, whilst a series of five step-by-step full animal portrait projects give you the opportunity to put your learning into action. * Paint & Create, March 2023 *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6, Materials 10, Getting started 20, Markmaking 26, Composing your portrait 38 Studies 52 Golden eye: dog 54, Green eye: cat 58, Brown eye: dog 62, Pink nose: cat 66, Black nose: dog 70, Pink nose: dog 74, Clumpy fur 80, Long white fur 84, Short shiny chestnut fur 88, Black curly fur 92 Portraits 96 Aura – Step-by-step Norwegian Forest Cat 98, Milo – Step-by-step Mexican hairless dog 106, Sadie –Step-by-step Shetland Sheepdog 116, Blue – Step-by-step Gypsy Cob horse 126, Brandy – Step-by-step Red Angus cow 136 Index 144

Book SynopsisPraise for The Addictive Sketcher: "It's impossible not to be carried along by his enthusiasm and the sheer dynamism of his work. Although this is carried out for the most part in the field, it's remarkably polished and a lot more than just quick notes. There's an element of improvisation - a jazz-like tone - and Adebanji certainly has a natural ability. If you share his love of drawing, this is a book to embrace as well as learn from." - The Artist magazine Adebanji Alade is one of the UK’s most renowned artists – and he’s addicted to sketching. Inspired by the sights and sounds of London, he travels around the city filling his sketchbooks with drawings of people, places and scenes of contemporary urban life. Showcasing one of Adebanji’s inspirational sketchbooks in its entirety, and with a fascinating introduction to the way he works, this unique visual record of everyday city life also offers a compelling insight into the creative process of a modern urban sketcher.Trade ReviewAdebanji Alade is a self-confessed sketchbook addict. Renowned artist, teacher at Heatherley School of Fine Art and vice president of the Royal Institute of Oil Painterm Adebanji makes regular appearances on the BBC's The One Show and can be found sketching the sights and sounds of London. His facinating new book, Addictive An Artists Sketchbook showcases one of the artist's sketchbooks in its entirety, showing a unique visual record of everyday life in the city of London. In his introduction Adebanji describes the way he works, and sthe sketchbook allows us an intimate peep into the artist's creative process. The sketches are inspirational and very soon you find you are addicted too! * Leisure Painter *I already own a copy of the wonderful, The Addictive Sketcher. It's got lots of examples, hints and tips and clear photographs showing you how to achieve similar sketches. There are suggestions of places to sketch, where to find subjects etc. Adebanji Alade is a working artist and his enthusiasm and the joy he gets from his art is apparent and infectious. Addictive: An Artist’s Sketchbook, is exactly what it says. It's a very full sketchbook showing the faces and places of everyday city life that Adebanji was inspired to record. There is no text as such (apart from the foreword and three pages of introduction). But my goodness the 275 pages that follow is full of sketches and artists written notes. It's wonderful to look at. There are all types of drawings from very rough to more detailed, and all types of faces and figures, park scenes. All life is there. The brief, handwritten artist's notes give an interesting insight into what inspires the artist, although sometimes it's just a name/place and a date. It a very interesting companion book to The Addictive Sketcher. I've been doing more drawing and sketching this year than I've ever done before. It's a great way to pass the time while stuck at home because of the coronavirus pandemic. I have sketchbooks. My inspiration has been faces and figures I see online and on television (I pause the screen and sketch). And some online tutorials. When I look at Adebanji's sketchbook I'm inspired and want to go out and about to draw – maybe not just yet, but soon, I hope. I was ready to throw out my old sketchbooks which, like Addictive, are mostly studies of faces, but I think I'll keep them now as a record of my progress (if any) and I'll use the space better with more little sketches on each page, and importantly, notes and the date! If only I had Adebanji Alade's talent! Addictive: An Artist's Sketchbook has definitely inspired me to do more. -- Janis Steele * Amazon Customer Review *Looking at another artist's sketchbook can feel like an invasion of their privacy. It can also be unenlightening as you look at half-worked ideas and visual notes that had so much meaning for their creator and tell the viewer precisely nothing. When the artist is Adebanji Alade, however, it's a different ball-game altogether. The work here is surprisingly complete because sketching is what he does. These are real people, captured in real time and they live, breathe, even more on the page. The images are mostly faces, and they're active, attentive, thoughtful, in repose. To catch the subtlety of expression requires quick working and you'll be amazed by what Adebanji – and you – can achieve. This isn't an instructional book, but the sheer volume of work and the busyness of the pages is inspiring. The spiral binding could make it seem mannered, but actually conveys the feel of a much-used sketchbook. -- Henry Malt * Leisure Painter *Spiral bound and presented with no more text than forewords by Pete Brown and Ken Howard (those being the kind of circles Adebanji moves in these days) and an introduction by the artist himself, this, as a whole, is a piece of art in itself. You can read it as simply as an exhibition – being a sketcher, you’re not really going to ask for more from Adebanji than sketches. However, the sheer heft and volume become something else. It’s hard to put a finger on what that is, but I think I’m going to settle for “variety”, maybe also “humanity”. Adebanji is at home in crowds and these pages are nothing if not heavily populated. There’s a wealth here of faces, poses, expressions and situations. You don’t need to know who the people are or always what they’re doing. They’re studies and deserve – demand – to be studied themselves. If you’re coming at this to learn, then marvel at precisely that cornucopia of material, at all those ways to represent human beings at work, rest or play, at the sheer inventiveness of the observation that captures them. You could also use this like one of those manuals of poses that were all the rage a few decades ago. Those were reference books, but this adds a pleasant and valuable edge of creativity. Yes, to be here is a privilege, so take advantage and be exhilarated. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsForewords by Peter Brown NEAC and Prof. Ken Howard OBE RA Introduction The sketchbook

Book SynopsisThis is a wonderful introduction to drawing horses and it really demystifies the process of building up the images from initial simple shapes right through to the finished animals. Eva Dutton breaks down the stages into easy steps using a two colour process that clearly shows every line and curve. Even absolute beginners will find themselves creating great drawings when they use this book. An invaluable guide for anyone interested in this subject.Trade ReviewJune 09 If you want to draw horses then I can recommend this book. It really is just about drawing - no words are required so there are none. There is a brief introduction to using the book and further tips, but after that it is up to you. Just like How To Draw Birds In Simple Steps (also reviewed on this site) I was impressed with the beautiful simplicity of this slender book, reminding me irresistibly of the old Walter Foster series I learnt to draw from. This breaks the horse down into some basic shapes, and then adds the details in two or more drawings. Every new stage shows the next part in color, and finally there is a pencil drawing and a colored study of the subject. There is a large range of horse poses to choose from including heads, galloping, rolling, rearing, jumping etc and a good range of horse breeds from the Przewalski to the Lipizzaner, Exmoor Pony to Bay Arab and everything in between. Another one intended for my keeper shelf, and at under £5 (0r $10) inexpensive and very useful. * Myshelf.com *Table of Contents From simple shapes to realistic drawings in easy stages Popular subject Extremely simple step-by-step drawing method Great for absolute beginners or any artist wanting to brush up their drawing skills

Book SynopsisAt the beginning of the 20th century, a group of artists around Henri Matisse and André Derain were carrying out revolutionary colour experiments. The art critic Louis Vauxcelles gave them their name in 1905: the "Fauves". Translated into English, this means something like "beasts" or "wild animals". This catalogue is being published for the first survey exhibition on the Fauves staged in Switzerland for decades. It presents the expressive painting style and unusual colour combinations employed by Matisse, Derain and their companions in the years 1904 to 1908, situating them in the aesthetic and socio-political debates of that time. The male connotation of the term Fauves already suggests the exclusion of women artists on a conceptual level. The exhibition and catalogue challenge this traditional view and draw attention to female protagonists on the Paris art scene. Richly illustrated and supplemented by new art-historical research contributions, the publication offers an insight into the diversity of the colourful painting by the "beasts". Book SynopsisArtists and designers have recorded places, people, and life in drawings and sketchbooks for centuries. Over the past 50 years, Laurie Olin, one of America’s most distinguished landscape architects, has recorded aspects of life and the environment in Italy: its cities and countryside, streets and cafes, ancient ruins, art, architecture, people, villas, and gardens — civic and domestic, humble to grand, things of interested to his designer’s eye— taking the time to see carefully. Rome in its seasons, agriculture in Umbria and Tuscany, trees, food, and fountains, all are noted over the years in watercolour or pen and ink. Originally made in the personal pleasure of merely being there as well as self-education, this selection from many sketchbooks and drawings is accompanied with introductory notes and remarks for different regions including Rome, Turin, Venice, Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, Campania, and Sicily.

Book SynopsisBen Woolfitt begins each day by drawing. Using graphite, silver and metal leaf and selected objects for frottage, Woolfitt plumbs the depths of his unconscious as he draws on each page of his books. Although best known for his large-format paintings, Woolfitt has completed hundreds of drawings which showcase his signature process: taking a pre-existing sign -- a piece of bamboo, for example -- and imbuing it with subjective energies through the act of recording and accentuating its impression on the page. The drawings in Ben Woolfitt: Rhythms & Series are charged with rich psychological meaning; they speak where language fails. Distributed randomly in his drawing books, Woolfitt's work transforms the linear structure of the bound volume into a nonlinear repository of his sensations and feelings, offering a special glimpse into his psyche. Ben Woolfitt: Rhythms & Series contains more than 65 reproductions of Woolfitt's distinctive drawings along with an interview with the artist by AGO curators Kenneth Brummel and Alexa Greist.

  • How to See It, How to Draw It: The Perspective

Search Press Ltd How to See It, How to Draw It: The Perspective

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a hands-on guide to learning to draw in perspective. It is partly about learning to draw a set of straight lines that meet at a point. And it’s partly about learning to look at what is around you, and spot where those invisible straight lines might be located. It’s a book for anyone who wants to draw or paint—in any genre and in any medium. And it’s not weighed down with theory – although everything you will need to know is explained. Most of all, it gives you exercises to play with. You can put your observational skills to the test with the “image quiz” features—where you take a pen and draw in all the vanishing points onto the book itself. Or use the special “perspective chambers” to draw objects onto an existing scene, keeping it all in the right perspective: think of it as a kind of 3D doodling. By the time you get to the end of the book, you will understand how perspective works and be able to apply it intuitively without a ruler or drafting table. The whole concept will feel like a sixth sense. And you can get on with being creative. There is also a 30-page workbook to put your skills to the test!Trade ReviewAs a college lecturer I would say this is for the higher level or degree level students. It is thorough and covers perspective well in both text and visual representation. It's not for a quick look though and a certain amount of time needs to be given to truly use the book but it's worth it. The workbook is an especially nice section. * Marian Carr *One of the most important things to master when you are learning how to draw is perspective; it is also one of the most difficult. In this primer the author and various other artists show how to get the better of it and thus improve your skills. This is not the sort of book to breeze through in a short time; to get the best out of it you will need to read it through more than once. There are practical exercises to try out, lots of diagrams and descriptions of what is going on to work through. Some mathematical skills are a great help. After a brief history of perspective use in art, the author explains the different types and then dedicates a chapter to each of them. One, two and three-point perspective, multi and curvilinear are all explored, and finally there is a workbook to try it all out. Each chapter is divided into four sections with a page of explanations at the front to show how to use it. Seeing it, understanding it, applying it and how-to sequence are the section headings. There is plenty to look at and plenty to read. A slightly thicker and larger font would have been easier on the eye here as the print is small and thin, but there is a lot to get in with these complex topics. Several pages of diagrams, grids, drawings and photos with captions show how it all works, and turning to the back, there are blank grids with links for downloading so you can have a go. I found this to be the best part, as all that wee print and involved drawing was useful, but I personally got more out of it all after I had had a go myself. This is not surprising, perhaps, as art is a practical subject, and if you are looking for an exhaustive guide to perspective this is a good choice. * Myshelf.com *July 2016 There have been many books on perspective down the years, all trying in their own wat to simplify what is a complex subject. In some cases, that can be overdone, leading to no explaination at all. Matthew Brehm confronts the problems head on and avoids as many of the intrusive red llines leading to vanishing points as possible. Five perspective types - 1 point, 2 point, 3 point, multi-point and curvilinear are each broken down into seeing, understanding, applying and a how-to-sequence. Thos consistent approach makes the book easy to follow and gives you the confidence to tackle the workbook section, whcih is definitely quite technical. This is one of the best books on the subject I've seen. * The Artist *This book covers in depth the science of perspective. It is written by an Associate Professor of Architecture in a clear and concise manner. The chapters progress from explaining Basic perspective through to curvilinear perspective (I've never heard of this before!) Each chapter is subdivided into : seeing it, understanding it, applying it and 'how to' sequence. It is generously illustrated and even includes a work book complete with grids that can be photocopied to help with your project! Thoroughly recommended to buy and keep as reference for that ambitious project. * Dianne Ryan *It's often the subtle things which are difficult to explain and more so make them understood by others, Perspectives being one of them. However, Matthew Brehm through this Work book on Perspective , has well balanced the theory and through examples, takes us gradually from the simple one point perspective to more higher levels of perspectives (Curvilinear). This Work book takes a four pronged structured mode of learning for each of the perspective under study. Step one being "Seeing It" - creates the awareness and focuses on building the observational skills, followed by "Understanding it" - which covers the technical concepts involved , step 3 -"Applying it" - appreciation of the application of the concepts through well selected drawings and finally a "how to" - Step wise execution of a drawing as a case study. The book also comes with a 32 page worksheets to prompt readers to put theory into practice while reading the book itself. Would recommend this book for the all those who are keen to understand and explore Perspectives- to add more life to their creations. I have enjoyed reading this book, my thanks to Matthew Brehm and the publishing team for bringing out a book which is true to its title * Thiagarajan PK *This book arrived at a good time for me, as I am in the early stages of a street scene showing Guildford High Street, which has converging rows of buildings on a downward-sloping road. First impressions are good, with the book printed on high quality paper. The text and images are clear and beautifully printed. It’s a book you’ll want to handle. The book consists of 144 pages in a near-square format and is divided into three major sections; history, examples and a workbook section. I’ll deal with each section in turn. 1 - History The author, Matthew Brehm, goes to some lengths to explain the history of perspective in art, which actually makes for an interesting read on its own, discussing the various approaches together with illustrations to support the text. 2 - Examples This is the main part of the book and covers the different types of perspective that we may encounter when producing our art: 1-point, 2-point, 3-point and, interestingly, curvilinear perspective. Each type of perspective is handled using the method of ‘seeing it’, ‘understanding it’, and ‘applying it’. The ‘seeing it’ sections give illustrated examples of how we can identify the perspective type being discussed, using photographs, shapes and models. The author is careful to highlight pitfalls for the unwary, such as getting the horizon line wrong. ‘Understanding it’ goes into why we need to apply the particular type of perspective and ways to apply the methods. For instance, the subject may include irregular or complex shapes which need to be analysed by the artist as part of the application process. ‘The final stage is ‘applying it’, when the author gives examples of artworks using the perspective type being discussed. Following the examples is a sub-section giving a ‘how-to sequence’, where the reader is taken through an example artwork using the perspective type under discussion in a number of easy to follow steps, resulting in a finished work. 3 - Workbook Using pre-drawn grids, this 32 page section takes the reader through each perspective type, with the opportunity to use the ideas presented in the earlier chapters. Some pages fold out to give you bigger perspectives and grids, enabling the reader to plot really wide scenes. Conclusion This book is really easy to get into, providing clear and understandable directions for finding and applying the different types of perspective. I found the book engrossing to read and have already learnt how to identify and apply the correct perspective for my current painting. I shall certainly be referring to this useful book over the coming weeks and months and can recommend it to anyone with an interest in the subject. * David Raison *I have known students who really struggle to understand perspective. This book should help anyone develop their understanding of perspective and use their knowledge to improve their drawing skills. Each type of perspective has its own chapter, from one-point to curvilinear. Workbook exercises give you the chance to practice. Use the grids to guide you. There are practical techniques, explanations and plenty of examples to ensure that you understand the theory. You’ll find work in pencil and in colour. You’ll find the basics to the most complex types all included and explained. Build your confidence and skills by following the progressive chapters. This is one of the most thorough and easy-to-use books I have found on the subject. The cover has a quality feel. * Karen Platt- yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *April 2016 If you are looking to improve your drawing and painting, this new book by Matthew Brehm - How to see it, How to Draw it- will set you on the right tracks. Perspective is a subject that many beginners prefer to gloss over, but it's importance in creating convincing work is paramount. This hands on guide promises not to weigh us down with theory. Instead it offers exercises to play with, including drawing vanishing points in the book itself. " Think of it as 3D doodling", says the author. By the end of the book, you should be able to understand perspective intuitively, enabling you to draw convincing objects without use of a ruler. * The Leisure Painter *If ever a book died on its feet without its subtitle, this is the one! As a guide to perspective for the artist, rather than the technical illustrator, it’s pretty much pitch perfect. Any book which tells you that it’ll take away the mystique of the subject is lying, because it’s a technical one and you can’t avoid an explanation of vanishing points or the lines that lead to them. Matthew Brehm does, however, minimise a lot of the complexity, and the bulk of the illustrations are attractive drawings and paintings, mostly of buildings, that show the results in practice. Where theory is necessary, it’s mainly confined to block diagrams which, while not pretty, do make the matter easier to understand. The book is also extremely well structured, starting with one-point perspective and progressing to two and three point before going on to multi-point and curvilinear. Each section works in the same way: seeing it, understanding it, applying it and how to sequence. Keeping the approach constant means that, once you’ve got the hang of one topic, you’ve got the hang of them all. There’s also an excellent introduction to the basics: visual depth clues, lines of convergence, the horizon line and so on. If you’ve ever struggled to get to grips with perspective, and any book is going to open your eyes, this is the one to do it. I won’t say I couldn’t put it down, but I do keep picking it up. * Artbookreview.net *

Book SynopsisGiving an insight into how this inspiring and talented artist works, The Addictive Sketcher passes on Adebanji Alade's infectious enthusiasm and will have the reader reaching for a pencil or pen to have a go. Adebanji has a skill and a passion for speaking and motivating his audience in a fun and engaging way, and this is reflected in his writing style. Lively, stimulating and instructive, it is packed with numerous examples of the author’s sketches as well as examples of his vibrant finished paintings. Covering pencils, coloured pencils, charcoal and graphite, along with finished oil paintings, this book provides a fascinating insight into the author’s techniques. Adebanji’s work covers a broad range of subjects, including landscapes, portraits, crowd scenes, urban scenes and seascapes. He’s particularly well known for his portraits and working outdoors capturing the life of London where he lives. This book includes examples from a range of subject areas.Trade ReviewAdebanji Alade is caught up in the joys of a creative adventure, and he wants you to join him on his drawing escapades. A little dramatic perhaps, but as the title suggests, sketching for Adebanji is a way of life rather than just a way to while away an hour or two with paper and pencil. Following an opening chapter in which the Nigerian-born artist talks about his upbringing and the time at college when his passion for sketching was born, Adebanji describes his mindset and goals to the reader. He writes about appreciating and embracing your work, the pitfalls, and challenges, how to maintain momentum, and more. It’s advice that comes across as genuine and from experience, delivered in an enthusiastic tone. No surprise really seeing that Adebanji teaches at London’s Art Academy and runs workshops in schools and colleges. Adebanji maintains his conversational tone as he covers the sketching basics, starting with the equipment he uses, before going on to mark-making techniques such as contours, angles, and ghosting. It’s accompanied by unfussy photography, short walkthroughs, WIPs and finished art. The artist spends longer covering core art concepts including composition and perspective, and provides a range of finished examples, annotated art and a simplified explanation of technical terms. The heart of the book is given over to specific sketching scenarios, including public transport, buskers, statues, and markets. All are within reach of the average artist and Adebanji provides practical tips on how to approach each topic. He maintains the personal touch, giving anecdotes on what and who he encountered on the day, and lessons learned from the session. Extended walkthroughs show art theory in practice, as the artist takes his rough line art to a degree of finish on a variety of scenes and styles. * Imagine FX *This is a book about why to sketch as well as how to sketch. You'll discover the importance of finding the hidden diamonds - corners, figures, unconsidered trifles the rest of the world passes by. Adebanji is an author of enormous warmth and it's impossible not to want to go out with him on a sketching trip. * The SAA *Adebanji Alade - who featured in the January '19 issue of Paint - is an enthusiast, even a bit of an evangelist, That could be a fatal combination - there's nothing worse than being hectored by a street-corner soap-boxer - but thanks to a large helping of love, it's really rather delightful. You'll like Adebanji before you've even finished the introduction. He loves God (that's the first thing he tells us, but that's also all he tells us about it), and he also loves books and sketching. He discovered that by borrowing a copy of Alwyn Crawshaw's Learn to Sketch and devouring it until it practically fell apart. That's where the enthusiasm comes in - if he loved books more than sketching, he'd have preserved it in a handmade cover. I said you'll like Adebanji and I'll go further, you'll love him. His addiction isn't demanding (at least not of the reader) and his enthusiasm doesn't make him a preacher. He just wants you to get as much pleasure from sketching - anything and everything - as he does. He achieves this by showing countless examples and by offering a torrent of practical advice. I particularly like what he says about the etiquette of sketching, Not for him the head-down, get-on-with-it-regardless approach; rather it's a matter of respect: "Always be grateful to those who take the time to come over to where you are sketching and pass a comment about your work." Also: "if the person you are sketching frowns or asks you to stop, be polite and respect their wishes." See, I told you he's a nice guy. But perhaps the best thing about Adebanji is that he understands his own working methods and this makes him one of the best teachers around. Books on sketching can easily be - erm - sketchy (boom, boom!) when it comes to instruction, but this is one of the best drawing manuals there is. Adebanji understands form, structure and perspective and his explanations of everything from faces to buildings, interiors, landscapes and figures, both individual and in groups, are second to none. This is a joyous book that will teach you much more than you'll ever believe in the company of a warm and generous teacher. -- Henry Malt * Paint magazine *Sketching is the artist’s secret weapon. Often less intrusive than a camera, it also allows a degree of interpretation and note-taking that isn’t available to the photographer. Sometimes a quick image can be an end in itself, at others it’s the basis for a more considered work completed in the studio. The trick is to learn to see and to look, to be completely at home with your materials and to know exactly which details are important. All that comes with practice, so practise you must. Adebanji Alade is, as the title suggests, a compulsive sketcher. In the introduction, he tells us how he learnt sketching from a battered copy of Alwyn Crawshaw’s Learn to Sketch, a slim volume that, while an excellent introduction, was hardly a full course in drawing. To learn this way requires not a little inherent skill, but Adebanji is too modest to say that. What he does tell us, though, is that, having discovered sketching, he fell in love with it. He also tells us that he loves God. This isn’t an essential part of the narrative, and he doesn’t pursue it, but what is important about it is that it tells us about him. He loves sketching and he loves God, so should we be surprised that he clearly loves his audience too? This isn’t a book that preaches, but rather one that explains. What leaps from every page is the sense of joy Adebanji feels when he out with paper and pencils. It’s infectious and I defy anyone not to want to get out there with him (probably in person, too). This wouldn’t be an instructional book without instruction and that’s here in plenty, but it all comes from example. There are people, buildings, interiors and open spaces as well as seasons, light and weather. A huge variety of techniques are covered, but always in context and always leading to a worthwhile result – never a series of marks made for their own sake. There’s also handy advice on the etiquette of sketching – ask permission if necessary, thank people who comment on your work, be polite and, above all, stop if asked. If this is a book filled with love, it’s also one lacking in any kind of disrespect. Adebanji immerses himself in sketching and this is a book that’s itself immersive. It’s also a joy, both tho read and to look at. “Once you catch the vision, you will never remain the same; you will spread the gospel of addictive sketching wherever you go, for the rest of your creative journey.” Couldn’t have put it better myself. * Artbookreview.net *This is a book born of love. Adebanji Alade loves books and he loves drawing. If you're going to write one, it's a good place to start. In other hands, this could easily be a street-corner evangelistic rant, but Adebanji is too smart for that. He's also an excellent teacher, having learnt his craft from a copy of Alwyn Crawshaw's Learn to Sketch and understanding not just the processes of drawing, but how to acquire them. It's impossible not to be carried along by his enthusiasm and the sheer dynamism of his work. Although this is carried out for the most part in the field, it's remarkably polished and a lot more than just quick notes. There's an element of improvisation - a jazz-like tone - and Adebanji certainly has a natural ability. If you share his love of drawing, this is a book to embrace as well as learn from. * The Artist *There's nothing like going back to basics with just a sketchbook, a pen or pencil and a great teacher to guide you through the basics to harness your own unique style. Adebanji Alade is renowned for his passionate and engaging style, which is carried through to his writing in this lively and instructive book covering pencils, charcoal and graphite as well as oil painting techniques to use in land and seascapes, portraits and crowd scenes. * Simply Cards and Papercraft *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Motivation & inspiration 12 What you need 16 Sketching techniques 20 Composition 34 Value & Colour 40 People indoors 44 Pub scene 54 People Outdoors 62 Busker 74 Places Outdoors 80 Statue 94 Places indoors 100 Gallery 108 Discover 114 Painting 122 Index 128

Book SynopsisExplore exciting new ways of using graphite, charcoal and mixed media to create dramatic landscape drawings, under the expert tutelage of Robert Dutton. The Innovative Artist series provides a unique insight into the methods and materials used by leading contemporary artists who are pushing the boundaries of their art. Through numerous examples of the author’s work alongside practical demonstrations, each book provides a fascinating exploration of the artist’s creative process that will inspire the reader to move forward on their own artistic journey. This book is aimed at artists who wish to explore new ways of using a variety of drawing media to create striking, dramatic landscapes. Author-artist Robert Dutton uses his expressive, loose style of drawing and painting to capture, with great emotion, the power and drama of the landscape. Robert combines media such as liquid graphite, inks, metallic inks, charcoal and water-soluble painting and drawing pastels, and also experiments with collage work. Predominantly focusing on working in black and white, Drawing Dramatic Landscapes explores basic drawing techniques using a limited range of media, then introduces new techniques and products as the reader progresses. This is a highly-instructive guide to the techniques Robert himself uses, with numerous exercises and larger step-by-step projects throughout the book showing how he works. Alongside these are numerous examples of the author’s finished artworks accompanied by informative captions explaining the methods used to create them, thereby providing both instruction and inspiration. Robert works outdoors from life much of the time, later finishing his artworks in the studio. His work is both achievable and aspirational, making this a highly-attractive book for established artists who wish to gain insight into the work of their contemporaries who are experimenting with new and innovative techniques.Trade ReviewThis book is an inspiration for people that would like to loosen up and be creative. Each chapter goes into details of the medium used. It gives information about all the different papers, primers used on the surface and of course the all important mediums used. Robert Dutton goes into detail of the different types of graphite, whether it is water soluble coloured graphite or liquid or powdered graphite. Then there are the charcoals, pastels and metallic inks. He uses diluted white acrylic inks on top of his dried work for highlighting. I love the impressionistic style of Robert’s work. It has certainly inspired me to get creative and loosen up using all sorts of mediums. I would definitely recommend this book to those that would like to be creative with their drawing and of course, to loosen up! -- Carol Archdale * Amazon *Delayed by the events of 2020, this is the first in a series from Search Press that looks at new and innovative techniques. Robert's 30 years' experience in the creative industries now sees him working as a fine artist, tutor and regular contributor to The Artist, but he also has a background in graphic design and illustration. This mixture of skills makes for exciting, but well-explained work - perfect for a book of this kind. Subject-specific books on drawing are fairly thin in the ground, so this comes with a lot of expectations, but should certainly not disappoint. The only reservation would be that, if you're looking for a gentler, more placid approach ... well, the title gives it away. Materials include graphite, charcoal, acrylics, inks and pastel and subjects range from rocks and mountains to water, trees and structures. This is an exciting book creatively and technically. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *Part of The Innovative Artist series that gives insights into the working methods of leading contemporary artists who are pushing the boundaries of art, Drawing Dramatic Landscapes by Robert Dutton, regular contributor to our sister publication The Artist, looks at ways of using graphite, charcoal and mixed media to create dramatic landscape drawings. Aimed at more experienced artists who are keen to explore materials and methods, Robert shows you how to combine media, such as liquid graphite and metallic inks with pastels and collage, working predominantly in black and white and, from life, outdoors for much of the time. Numerous exercises are included alongside examples of Robert's work, which he has annotated with descriptions of the methods he has used to obtain such dramatic results. -- Leisure PainterThe Innovative Artist: Drawing Dramatic Landscapes is aimed at artists who wish to explore new ways of using a variety of drawing media to create striking, dramatic landscapes. Predominantly focusing on working in black and white, this book is a highly-instructive guide to the techniques Robert himself uses, with numerous exercises and larger step-by-step projects throughout the book showing how he works. Alongside these are numerous examples of the author’s finished artworks accompanied by informative captions explaining the methods used to create them, thereby providing both instruction and inspiration. Of his work Robert says, 'Primarily my work is focused on landscape and my beloved northern wild open vistas, dramatic mountain peaks and and intimate hidden corners of moor and dale. 'Landscape is the great escape, a place where my creative vision is thoroughly released with a direct engagement and expressive response to my subject. I immerse myself in the landscape and allow the interplay between what I see but more importantly what I ‘feel’ to create each and every individual piece of work. 'More often than not everything is started on location. It has to - the physical engagement with the sublime landscape is so important. I plan for the weather but if it rains, so be it - it goes into the work as its all part of the process.’ * Painters Online *Very inspiring and dramatic illustrations. I can highly recommend this book for beginners and experienced artists alike as there is so much to learn from it, it’s very interesting and covers using lots of different media and techniques with some very creative and expressive illustrations. The artist covers how to use different types of graphite including water soluble and liquid graphite, pastels, charcoal, paint and ink. He covers the use of different papers such as cartridge, watercolour paper and pastel paper. His work is very inspirational and there are lots of step-by-step tutorials. There are some amazingly dramatic illustrations of his work throughout the book. -- Jill Birks * Amazon *It is to be hoped that this new series from Search Press will be expanded in the not too distant future. The idea of featuring work by artists who explore and expand the horizons of their medium is an attractive one and there are enough around that it shouldn’t be necessary to stretch the criteria just for the sake of it. Robert Dutton works mostly in graphite media – pencils, sticks, powder and liquid – but also charcoal, acrylics, inks and pastels. These latter for the most part provide accents and colour, but what he can do with straightforward monochrome will take your breath away. That’s what makes this such an exciting book. Search Press are, of course, mainly publishers of instructional books rather than monographs, so there has to be a strong how-to element as well as the valuable featured work. They are well-practised, both in content and layout as well as selection of authors. It should come as no surprise therefore that this works as inspiration and creative encouragement just as well as straightforward technical lessons and demonstrations. The approach and style, however, make it less of a course and more of an exploratory tour in the company of an informed and competent guide. Robert has a teaching background and it shows – he is excellent at explaining what he has done, but why it was achieved that way. Not everything in the book will be to everyone’s taste – you may prefer the sometimes dark graphite drawing, I may feel happier with coloured pencils and inked highlights. For all that, Robert’s explanations have a superb clarity and are always interesting – whatever your preferences, there’s nothing here you’d want to skip. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Materials and tools 8 Expressive drawing 24 ‘The exhilaration of the summits’ 26 Working en plein air Drawing with graphite 30 Landscapes in graphite 42 Drawing with charcoal 52 Landscapes in charcoal 60 Developing your personal language 66 Inspiration 68 Order from chaos 70 Expressive drawing with liquid graphite and pastels Fast foundations 80 Expressive drawing with liquid graphite and ink Breathing space 82 Developing confidence and vision Set in Stone 84 Step-by-step project Resolving your drawings 94 Proper preparation 96 Developing work in the studio Instant atmospherics 98 Expressive drawing media in harmony Heading Out to Sea 100 Step-by-step project Strength in Flexibility 106 Using liquid charcoal, graphite and pastel Trust the process 108 Working in charcoal, pastel and inks The freedom of ink 114 Autumn Sun and Shadows 116 Step-by-step project calculated risks 122 Charcoal, pastel, inks and paints A celebration of nature 126 Mixed media and pastel paper On the edge 132 Creating sharpness Showers, Sun and Shadow 138 Step-by-step project Towards abstraction 146 Changing direction 148 Revisiting a composition Surface and light 150 Textured drawing Next steps 168 Index 160 Acknowledgements

Book SynopsisIf you have often struggled to draw animals, from master artist Giovanni Civardi comes this highly visual beginners guide to drawing dogs, cats and horses using the traditional grid technique – a method that makes the first stages of drawing simple and achievable. Giovanni Civardi shows you how to create an accurate pencil sketch of the subject by laying a grid over a photo or drawing and transferring the image to the drawing surface one square at a time. Beginning with a summary of animal anatomy and basic drawing techniques, this book contains over 90 outlines of dogs, cat and horses in a range of static and moving poses, with guidance on how to add shading and tonal effects to create more detailed finished drawings.Trade ReviewThe idea behind this series is simple and easy to comprehend – it does what it says on the tin. Each subject is overlaid by a co-ordinated grid, so that all the main points of shape and composition can easily be transferred the finished image. It’s a long-established and well-tested technique that simply works. What makes these volumes particularly useful, as well as the quality of the illustrations, is the amount of background material – structure, anatomy and features – that prefaces each set of drawings. In the animals volume, these are not just general but applied to each type – so, dogs, horses, cats. When it comes to people, these are structure, movement and posture. She shows how to draw elements of the landscape such as trees and foliage, hills and mountains, skies, water and buildings, and there are practical, step-by-step exercises throughout to help you practise the techniques. Margaret then guides you carefully through each stage of six stunning projects, each culminating in a beautiful landscape drawing you'll be proud of. Suitable for beginners wanting to build up their confidence as well as more seasoned artists seeking inspiration, this book is a must-have for anyone who wants to draw landscapes in dry media such as graphite pencils, acrylic ink, pen, Conté crayons, pastels or charcoal. This is a new, redesigned edition of Margaret's highly successful Drawing Masterclass: Landscapes.Trade ReviewI'm a beginner. Picked up a pencil and sketch pad last summer and tried it on and off since then. I've not done landscapes before. Overall I really like that the book contains such a massive range of sketches to learn from. I know that if I play around with copying these then by the end of it I will be able to try out any landscape of my choosing having learned how to lay out the sketch and get the best from it as well as how to go about conveying everything with pencils (including the difficult stuff; water, clouds etc). I also appreciated the details about materials and that each sketch explains what has been used to draw it. Handy to know what there is and how it's used even though I'm just working with a couple of pencils at the moment. I'm really enjoying the experience and looking forward to seeing the results of the one I'm working on at the moment! I think this book is a good investment. -- Hilda Wright * Amazon Customer Review *Margaret Eggleton is a professional artist and experienced tutor whose work is based on good drawing techniques. Her new book, Drawing Landscapes, is a redesigned edition of her successful Drawing Masterclass: Landscapes. The book provides a practical guide to drawing media, including graphite pencils, acrylics ink, pen, Conte crayons, pastel and charcoal. An introduction to materials, getting started, using sketchbooks, and line and tone, is followed by information on elements in the landscape, such as trees and foliage, hills and mountains, moors and meadows, skies, flowers, water, man-made structures and figures. Six step-by-step projects build on the knowledge you have learnt. * Leisure Painter *I have found it extremely helpful and has given me the impetus to do more pencil drawings, as most of my artwork is done with paints. The book is well illustrated with some inspiring drawings and gives much information on materials, perspective, how to work from your own photographs etc. I was very interested to see how to do skies with pencil, different types of trees, and in particular figures as I tend to avoid drawing people, but will be doing more practice now. On the whole the book is very informative, and I will certainly be practising my pencil work more in the future. If anyone is looking for a good book to enhance their drawing skills – I whole heartedly recommend this. -- Viv Frodsham * Customer Review *The cover of this book filed me with trepidation. It is such a lovely drawing that I felt the challenge would be too much for me. Fortunately, my initial fears were unfounded, as Margaret’s approach is so well structured. The author introduces us to past masters of the genre: Durer, Turner, and Van Gogh, by producing drawings in their individual styles before giving an overview of the various mediums used in the book, together with small examples. Even the mediums are drawn! The author quickly moves onto the practical aspects of drawing, with worked examples showing the how the picture is constructed. Simple line drawing is quickly followed by introducing tone (the example forms the cover picture). Perspective is covered in its various forms, such as aerial and linear. Margaret breaks down the components of a drawing to explain how each part is developed; e.g. trees and foliage, hills and mountains, together with exercises for the reader to try themselves. Once past these specifics, we move on to worked examples of various subjects for the reader to attempt in the various drawing media. Each example is complete with a list of materials and a comprehensive set of instructions. By the end of the book, I felt that my landscape drawing skills would be noticeably improved. The book is well written, easy to follow, and has great illustrations, and well worth the money. -- David Raison * Customer Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 The history of landscape drawing 8 Materials 12 How to start 22 Line and tone 30 Perspective 36 Trees and foliage 40 Hills and mountains 48 Moors and meadows 54 Skies 58 Flowers in the landscape 62 Water 66 Manmade structures 72 Figures 78 LANDSCAPES The Way to the Woods 82 Canon's Farm Barns 86 Mountains 90 Lake District Bridge 94 Rocamadour 100 Cottage Garden 106 Index 112

I've always marveled at the skill of illustrators to be able to pick up a pencil and draw whatever is in their mind so perfectly on the page before them. When I try to draw it looks like a spider fell in an inkwell and ran across the paper! I usually trace characters that I have printed out on my lightboard, but it would be so special to be able to draw my own work instead of a wobbly imitation of someone else's. I've found it much easier to draw cartoons than realism, so Manga is an ideal starting point for me and I suppose many other wannabe artists! That's where Draw Manga comes in. This book was written by Sonia Leong, a professional comic book artist and graphic designer who specialises in Anime and Manga. It is a comprehensive step-by-step guide on the famous Japanese art style and includes a plethora of information, written and pictorial, to help both the beginner and seasoned artist. Here's a look through some of the pages in the book. I don't think there's any book out there that explains and demonstrates Manga in so much detail and in such a user-friendly way- this book even includes 28 tutorial QR codes that you can scan and watch Sonia draw in action, which of course can be much easier to follow than in print. There is 256 full-colour pages in total for just over £13, and I'm certain anyone at any skill level will be able to pick up some great tips from Draw Manga to master this comic art form. It doesn't predispose any prior drawing knowledge; yet in a friendly and helpful tone goes into a surprising amount of detail. This is a book from an author who is a self confessed fan of the genre and this shines through. By the end you'll be wanting to make and market your own manga! * Marian Carr, Bradford College *Jan 14 Those of you with children or grandchildren will know of their fascination for drawing and painting cartoon figures known as Manga – a Japanese word referring to comics and cartooning. Book SynopsisAcclaimed Royal Academy artist Jeanette Barnes and Paul Brandford breathe new life into sketching for town and city dwellers everywhere. Mercurial, inspirational, practical and charming, this guide covers everything from architecture to accidental paintings, cocktails to clouds, smudges to skyscrapers. With easily digested bite-size entries, it introduces many types of art materials, their uses and a number of insights and exercises to build confidence in a range of approaches to drawing. For the more experienced sketcher, the artists discuss the processes behind drawing and strategies to inject more creativity and open-mindedness about how to take a drawing forward. With great charm, the book gives a window onto the experiences of Jeanette, who has travelled to many cities worldwide in search of inspiring city subjects and a half-decent cocktail. Full of tips and ideas about working on location and back in the studio, this book is filled with the scribbles, sketches and preparatory drawings that feed into the larger works for which she is known. As a whole, the book is a multipurpose tool which can be used to unlock the potential of drawing both technically and philosophically so that the reader can be the architect of their own drawing experience rather than the recipient of someone else’s. After thirty years of drawing, many of them teaching, the authors still feel an excitement when picking up a pencil or some charcoal. This book gives every reader the chance to share that excitement and bring urban living to life.Trade Review‘Mercurial, inspirational, practical and charming’ The Big Draw 2022 ‘City Sketching Reimagined … is not just about drawing cities in a new way; the book itself is a massive break from other how-to urban sketching books … ideal for anyone who wants to break out of their urban sketching routine and create something remarkable’ Art Tool Kit 2022 ‘A fresh and encouraging introduction to drawing’ Leisure Painter 2022 ‘The most substantial book I have seen on urban sketching’ The Artist Henry Malt 2022
