Emerald Publishing Limited The Emerald Handbook of Feminism, Criminology and
Book SynopsisThe Emerald Handbook of Criminology, Feminism and Social Change combines a wide range of international contributors to chart the uneasy relationship between feminism, criminology and victimology. It explores historical and contemporary questions posed for criminology and victimology by feminist work. The book is split into four sections which introduce the origins of feminist criminology; explore research beyond the northern hemisphere; extend the criminological agenda; and look to the future relationship between feminism and criminology. Comprehensive and current, this handbook provides fresh insight and commentary on the capacity of criminology to listen to feminist voices and is essential reading for anyone interested in feminism, criminology and social change.Trade ReviewThis fascinating collection tells the story of how criminology and victimology were transformed by feminist perspectives, and reveals the compelling new insights critical perspectives on gender are bringing to the study of social harms, including those inflected by the legacies of colonialism, globalization and state-sanctioned forms of social control. Anyone in doubt as to the difference feminism and criminology can make to a world complexly fractured by violence, abuse and accumulating inequalities should read this book. Insightful, inspiring and empowering. -- David Gadd Nearly half a century after International Women's Year, powerful mechanisms of gender inequality persist around the world. They generate poverty and cultural oppression, and are deeply implicated in violence, crime and victimization. This Handbook documents recent feminist criminology from many countries, highlighting gender dynamics around the Global South, new forms of online abuse, state violence, emerging theories of gender and crime, and creative strategies for social change. A great resource for criminology, and for the wider struggle for gender justice. -- Raewyn ConnellDoes criminology 'see' gender? This is the central question engaged in this wide-ranging, important and timely volume. This book engages this topic in ways that are theoretically and empirically expansive. The collection offers depth and breadth of engagement with the ways in which criminology has ignored, marginalized and sometimes engaged questions of gender and all its related intersections. It also explores theoretical, methodological and practical possibilities that are important for shaping the discipline into the future. The book includes contributions that cover a broad range of topics that go beyond questions of gender in criminological research to include serious engagement with intersectionality, engagement with the hegemony of global northern theorizing and voice, as well as work that touches on questions of decolonization in the criminological agenda. The book is fundamental reading in criminology, women’s and gender studies, and other disciplines interested in feminist work on violence, gendered violence in particular. This resource is essential for teachers in these fields and its interdisciplinary nature enables us to not only deconstruct disciplinary boundaries but also facilitates the asking of important questions about violence, victimhood and perpetration. I will recommend this book to all of my students and colleagues engaged in critical psychological work on violence and gender. -- Floretta Boonzaier, Professor of Psychology and Co-Director of the Hub for Decolonial Feminist Psychologies in Africa at the University of Cape Town, South AfricaTable of ContentsPart One: The Origins of Feminist Criminology Chapter 1. Michael O'Mara Books Ltd Somebody's Mother, Somebody's Daughter: True
Book Synopsis'Original, intelligent and thought-provoking, Carol Ann Lee's book sheds new light on to the human stories behind the headlines. A touching and timely insight into all of Sutcliffe's victims.' – Roberta Kray___________________Much has been written about the brutal crimes of Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper. During the four decades of his imprisonment for the murder of thirteen women – before his death in November 2020 – scarcely a week went by without some mention of him in the British media. In any story featuring Sutcliffe, however, his victims are incidental, often reduced to a tableau of nameless faces. But each woman was much more than the manner of her death.Based on previously unpublished material and fresh, first-hand interviews the book examines the Yorkshire Ripper story from a new perspective: focusing on the women and putting the reader in a similar position to those who lived through that time. By talking to survivors and their families, and to the relatives of the murdered women, Carol Ann Lee gets to the core truths of their lives and experiences, not only at the hands of Sutcliffe but also with the Yorkshire Police and their crass and appalling handling of the case, where the women were put into two categories: prostitutes and non-prostitutes. In this book they are, simply, women, and all have moving backstories.Recent news stories have shown that women and girls who come forward to report serious crimes of a sexual nature are often judged as harshly – and often more so – than the men who have wronged them. The Rochdale sex abuse scandal, the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, and the US President's deplorable comments about women are vivid reminders that those in positions of power regard women as second class citizens. Hard-hitting and wholly unique in approach, this timely book sheds new light on a case that still grips the nation.Trade ReviewLynda La Plante's Book of the Year 2019 * Big Issue *All too often we forget about the people who lost their lives... Canelo Jack the Ripper: The Murders and the Myths
Five brutal murders shocked London in the summer and autumn of 1888. They have never been forgotten. The Jack the Ripper case has never been solved - the killer remains a blood-spattered silhouette. Although ‘Jack’ as an entity was almost certainly invented by an unscrupulous journalist, he became an archetype - decked in the top hat and cloak of a Victorian melodrama villain, stalking the fog-wreathed streets of the old East End. The numerous Ripper theories which emerged at the time tell us more about Victorian attitudes than they do about the killer’s true identity. In Jack the Ripper the authors follow the grim homicidal trails that have permeated popular culture since the Whitechapel murders of 1888. It tells the victim’s stories in all their desperate poignancy, and explores the theories and suspects of the burgeoning field of ‘ripperology’. Conspiracy theories and myths that swirl around the case to this day, from black magicians to the royal family, are considered, as is the modern forensic view of the Ripper murders as sex crimes, with reference to disturbing modern cases such as that of the ‘Plumstead Ripper’.Terrifying and unignorable, this is the ultimate book on Jack the Ripper.

Emerald Publishing Limited Online Anti-Rape Activism: Exploring the Politics
Book SynopsisThe ebook edition of this title is Open Access, thanks to Knowledge Unlatched funding, and freely available to read online. Online Anti-Rape Activism examines the nature, use and scope of online spaces for anti-rape activism. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with activists from around the world, survey data from participants in these spaces, and a content analysis of social media pages, weblogs and websites, this book explores the complexities, contradictions, possibilities and politics that underscore the ways these online spaces are engaged with, regulated and their potential to contribute to social change. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, this book offers a critical commentary on the limitations and potentials of online anti-rape campaigning. It provides a foundation for understanding the emergence of #MeToo and sheds light on the complex history associated with keeping rape on the public agenda and the enduring tension between the personal and the political within feminist activism. The interdisciplinary and international approach makes this book suitable for a broad audience, including academics, students and activists working in the fields of gender and women’s studies, media studies, politics, sociology and criminology worldwide.Trade Review"Dr Loney-Howes' thoughtful and thought-provoking work on digital feminist activism around sexual violence is sorely needed. Where most accounts focus on prominent moments and famous hashtags, this book offers the voices and perspectives of activists who are working far from the spotlight to support survivors, raise consciousness and change minds. Based on careful and extensive empirical work, it offers reflections on the strengths and limitations of this activism that will be useful for anyone interested in contemporary feminism, sexual violence or digital organizing. The book is impressive in its scope, placing contemporary activism in a historical context of feminist organizing on sexual violence, and offering unique insights into the extraordinary work that goes into trying to change sexual cultures and achieve justice for survivors of sexual violence." -- Tanya Serisier, Senior Lecturer, Department of Criminology, Birkbeck College, University of London, UK"In the wake of mainstream movements such as #MeToo, this timely book showcases the important contribution of anti-rape activist initiatives which came before, paving its way. Drawing from eight case studies and ten years' research of digital anti-rape activism from around the world, this rigorously researched book highlights the importance of listening and recognition when it comes to rape testimonies, and the power that speaking and listening hold for finding healing, solace and the search for justice. For anyone interested in the role that digital technologies can and have played in online anti-rape activism, this book is a must-read. Highlighting the important work activists and survivors have done to bring (and keep) sexual violence at the forefront of public and political agendas, Loney-Howes leaves readers in no doubt about the usefulness of online spaces and tools for furthering anti-rape politics." -- Kaitlynn Mendes, University of Leicester, UKTable of ContentsChapter 1. Springer Nature Switzerland AG The War Against Civilians: Victims of the “War on
Book SynopsisThis book provides a critical analysis of how the “war on terror” affected the civilian population in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This “forgotten war,” which started in 2001 with the US-led invasion of Afghanistan, has seen more than 212,000 people killed in war-related incidents. Whilst most of the news media shifted their attention to other conflict zones, this war rages on. Badalič has amassed a vast amount of data on the civilian victims of war from both sides of the Durand line, the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He conducted interviews in Peshawar, Quetta, Islamabad, Kabul, Jalalabad, and many other cities and villages from 2008 to 2017. His data is mostly drawn from those extensive conversations held with civilian victims of war, Afghan and Pakistani officials, human-rights activists and members of the insurgency. The book is divided into three parts. The first examines the impact the US-led coalition, Afghan security forces and paramilitary groups had on civilians, with methods of combat such as drone strikes and kill-or-capture missions. The second part focuses on civilian victims of abuses of power by Pakistani security forces, including arbitrary detentions and forced disappearances. In the final part, Badalič explores the impact of unlawful practices used by the armed insurgency – the Afghan Taliban. Overall, the book seeks to tell the story of the civilian victims of the “War on Terror".Table of Contents1. Introduction: Creating A Reign Of Terror.- 2. Springer Nature Switzerland AG The ‘War on Terror’, State Crime & Radicalization: A Constitutive Theory of Radicalization
Book SynopsisThis book examines the ‘war on terror’ and radicalization from an ontological, non-state centric perspective. Since 9/11, criminology has developed in its study of terrorism, utilising alternative non-state centric frameworks to uncover and make visible state-initiated harm. Although progress has been achieved, criminology has continued to privilege the state, thereby failing to uncover forms of state crime and how such crimes facilitate radicalization and terrorism. Ahmed aims to rectify this gap by demonstrating how crimes of the state have contributed to the existence of Islamist-inspired terrorism and the emergence of global Jihadist organisations like Al-Qaeda and ISIS.The ‘War on Terror’ abandons the dominant socially-constructed discourse and application of the ‘war on terror’ and instead favours a grounded approach whereby actors, actions and consequences are analysed according to the risk they represent. Ahmed achieves this grounded approach through situating state practices in international human rights law and international humanitarian law. Through documenting the intersectionality of these practices with radicalization in the emergence of global Jihadist organisations, the book demonstrates how state crimes contribute to terrorism. Although the book sits at the intersections of critical criminology, state crime, international/transnational crime, it is relevant to all disciplines that are concerned with state crime, terrorism and radicalization. Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Measurement of Hate Crimes in America
Book SynopsisUsing data from the Uniform Crime Reporting Hate Crime Statistics Program and the National Crime Victimization Survey, this brief highlights the uniqueness of hate or bias crime victimization. It compares these to non-bias crimes and delineates the situational circumstances that distinguish bias from non-bias offending. The nuances of under-reporting shed light on bias-group and victim reasons for not reporting. By examining measurement issues associated with data collection systems, this brief helps explain why eighty-nine percent of participating law enforcement agencies report zero hate crimes each year. It describes patterns and trends in reporting the volume of general bias motivations and specific bias types, as the most prevalent hate crime offense types and most likely victims and offenders. With recommendations to address issues in measurement and under-reporting, including an action plan by the Enhance the Response to Hate Crimes Advisory Committee and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, a best practice model by the Oak Creek Police Department, and other promising law enforcement reporting models, this brief provides an increasingly critical resource for law enforcement practitioners and researchers dealing with hate crimes.Table of Contents1. Springer Nature Switzerland AG A Victim Community: Stigma and the Media Legacy
Book SynopsisAlthough historically ignored, crime victims are now very firmly on the map. For politicians, newspapers, the media and the public at large, criminal injury and loss are a source of constant concern and anxiety. Criminologists and media analysts have studied much of this concern in recent years but what has not been investigated is how communities experience high profile crimes and the media intrusion that inevitably follows. This book seeks to address this gap by exploring how the communities of Soham and Dunblane, that witnessed high profile crimes, lived with the tragic events at the time and the attention of the world’s media afterwards.Based on a two-year qualitative study of these communities, this book looks beneath the surface of the relationships, dilemmas and unexpected triumphs of communities struggling to come to terms with the most harrowing of events, within the glare of the media spotlight. Combining empirical observations with media analysis and social theory, this book offers something new to the criminological audience: the concept of the victim community. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Rape, Gender and Class: Intersections in
Book SynopsisThis book provides a timely analysis of the use of cultural narratives and narratives of credibility in rape trials in England and Wales, drawing on court observation methods. It draws on data from rape and sexual assault trials in 2019 which is used to examine the current status of newly emerging issues such as the use of digital evidence and the impacts of increasing policy attention on rape trials. Drawing on the concept of master narratives, the book provides an examination of rape myths and broader cultural narratives focussing on the intersections of gender and class and it also touches on the intersections of age, (dis)ability and mental health. It emphasizes the importance of situating rape myth debates and sexual violence research within a broader cultural context and thus argues for widening the lens with which rape myths in the courtroom, as well as in the wider criminal justice system, are viewed in research and contemporary debates. The findings presented in this book will help further discussion at a critical time by enabling scholars, as well as practitioners and policymakers, to better understand the current mechanisms that serve to undermine and retraumatise victim-survivors in the courtroom. It seeks to inform further research as well as positive changes to policy and practice.Table of ContentsChapter 1:- Introduction.- Chapter 2:- Rape Myths in the Courtroom.- Chapter 3:- Respectability.- Chapter 4:- Honesty and excuses.- Chapter 5:- What needs to change?
