Lannoo Publishers Spinal Surgery for Physiotherapists
Book SynopsisPain and discomfort related to the spine are extremely common, to the extent that back and neck pain may be considered part of the human condition. In most instances, interventions are not necessary. However, surgery can be required in some situations, and may be considered as a valuable option in others. In order to enable accurate patient counselling and to help in fine-tuning indications for surgery (for example, after unsatisfactory relief from conservative pain management), physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists should be aware of surgery rationales and techniques. In most cases, surgery does not stand on its own, and postoperative rehabilitation will benefit from a certain degree of surgical knowledge by the physiotherapist and rehabilitation specialist. Additionally, it is paramount that all spinal caregivers speak the same vocabulary and issue the same messages to the patient. This little book explains surgical reasoning and surgical techniques to non-surgeons. It aims at crossing the bridge between surgical and rehabilitation paradigms to the benefit of patients. The entire field is covered in a concise and comprehensive way, and will be a must-read in spinal rehabilitation practices.

Lotus Publishing Fascial Release for Structural Balance
Book SynopsisThis thoroughly revised edition of the authoritative reference Fascial Release for Structural Balance includes all of the most current research on the role of fascia and myofascia in the body, and how treatment affects it. James Earls and Thomas Myers have taken advantage of more sophisticated testing to explore in greater detail the relationship between anatomical structure and function, making this updated edition an even more essential guide. Fascia, the soft tissue surrounding muscles, bones, and organs, plays a crucial role in supporting the body. By learning to intelligently manipulate it, a bodyworker or therapist can help with many chronic conditions that their clients suffer from, providing immediate pain relief as well as reducing the strains that may contribute to the patient's ongoing aches and pains and leading to rapid, effective, and lasting pain relief. The authors argue that approaching the fascia requires "a different eye, a different touch, and tissue-specific techniques." Offering a detailed introduction to structural anatomy and fascial release therapy, including postural analysis, complete technique descriptions, and the art of proper assessment of a patient through "bodyreading," the book features 150 color photographs that clearly demonstrate each technique. Earls and Myers, both respected bodywork professionals, provide any bodywork practitioner using manual therapy-including physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, myofascial and trigger point therapists, and massage therapists-the information they need to deliver effective treatments and create long-lasting, systemic change in clients' shape and structure.

North Atlantic Books,U.S. NeuroKinetic Therapy: An Innovative Approach to
Book SynopsisNeuroKinetic Therapy is based on the premise that when an injury has occurred, certain muscles shut down or become inhibited, forcing other muscles to become overworked. This compensation pattern can create pain or tightness. By applying light pressure that the client then resists, the practitioner can evaluate the strength or weakness of each muscle, revealing the sources of injury and retraining the client’s body to remove the compensation patterns—reprogramming the body at the neural level. This easy-to-follow practitioner’s manual presents a series of muscle tests specially designed to uncover and resolve compensation patterns in the body. Author David Weinstock begins by explaining how this approach stimulates the body and mind to resolve pain. Organized anatomically, each section of the book includes clear photographs demonstrating correct positioning of the muscle accompanied by concise explanations and instructions. Labeled anatomical illustrations appear at the end of each section showing the relationships between the muscles and muscle groups. This essential resource is especially useful for physical therapists, chiropractors, orthopedists, and massage therapists looking for new ways to treat underlying causes of pain.

Yoga calls for unifying who and how we are; and as teachers - how we can help our clients (who are all different) move better.Classical Anatomy (in the West) divides the body down into its component parts and traditionally (unchanged for 400 years) reduces its functionality to those parts; usually described in a 2D iconic forms and founded in lever-based mechanics. In the East, such reductionism was never espoused and Yoga, Fascia, Anatomy and Movement covers two huge bases to bridge the difference and upgrade understanding of Yoga, to 21st Century anatomy:The first is to recognise that the leading edge of Fascia Science changes all those reductionist views (anatomically and biomechanically). It is carefully explained in the first part of the book and shows how the New Science of Body Architecture actually makes perfect sense of yogic philosophy of union and wholeness. The second is to take this paradigm shift and apply it in practice, to the subtle understanding of the fascial architecture and how that helps us move better. Yoga, Fascia, Anatomy and Movement attempts to ask questions, find suitable research and make all this practical and applicable to teachers and practitioners of all types. (Indeed, it teaches "posture profiling" and creating Class Mandalas, to support this). It is a contemporary yoga teacher''s bible. This book is for those who want to integrate scientific knowledge with practical application in yoga and movement disciplines, as well as yoga therapists and teacher, yoga instructors, bodyworkers, manual therapists, movement educators, anatomy and physiology students, somatic practitioners, fascia enthusiasts.Joanne''s newest book Myofascial Magic in Action: A Movement Practitioner''s Guide to How the Body Really Moves (Understanding Fascia) publishes in December 2024.

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Aston(r) Postural Assessment: A New Paradigm for
Book SynopsisThis is a brand new edition of a successful book which was one of the first to encourage movement therapists and bodyworkers to look at the postural causes of movement problems, rather than focusing treatment just on the physical symptoms. The book explains how to measure and assess posture and provides tools for doing so. The author introduces her unique perspective on body mechanics - Aston-Mechanics - a departure from the standard model of body posture, and provides many opportunities to practice observation and analytical skills based on this paradigm.Key featuresThe author is widely recognized as a pioneer in the art and science of kinetics for her discovery of the Aston Paradigm and consequent development of the many forms of movement, bodywork, fitness and ergonomics of Aston Kinetics. She created and developed Aston Kinetics as an educational system of movement and bodywork. Rather than enforcing physical symmetry, Aston Kinetics seeks to recognize the asymmetries that are natural to a person''s body and to achieve the best movement possible. Her acute ability to ''see'' the body in stillness and motion and to train others to see, move and exercise, established her discipline of bodywork and movement training that is known as Aston Kinetics. The book is highly illustrated with over 300 photographs and 150 line drawings. All the illustrations are new for this edition.

Elsevier Health Sciences Clinical Neurodynamics
Book SynopsisDrawing on the Maitland movement diagram, this title presents a system for mobilization of the neural and musculoskeletal systems. It guides readers through the subject of neurodynamics and the basic mechanisms in movement of the nervous system, linking causal mechanisms to diagnosis and treatment of pain and common musculoskeletal problems.Trade ReviewShacklock's book is a wonderful gift as well as a triumph of clinical reasoning and careful research. Examination of the nervous system typically does not extend beyond a search for neurologic signs and the most rudimentary mobility tests of major portions of that organ. Given what we've learned during the course of the neurobiologic revolution, this seems wholly inadequate. Shacklock describes specific testing of virtually every portion of the peripheral nervous system and reasonably asserts that this approach is necessary to complete the diagnostic picture of our patients with painful problems that display no relevant evidence of pathology. That is, something that requires healing or repair. My own students assure me that these patients comprise the majority of those with a primary complaint of pain. To me, this knowledge fills a hole in therapy through which countless patients have fallen. The author fills this book instead with a wonderful exposition of the deep model of neurobiology as it is currently understood and relevant to the clinician seeing patients in pain. He then tackles the nuts and bolts of testing and treatment, liberally providing all he can about the intricate nature of nervous biomechanics, paying careful attention to what is known of the bodily interface and the nature of its sensitivity. Every possible test is carefully illustrated and many pages are peppered with this master clinician's personal experience. For the sural nerve alone there are three pages devoted to its place in symptomotology, the intricate nature of its testing and specific thoughts about its treatment along with three clear and concise photographs. What more could a clinician seeking direction ask for? Oh yes, a CD-ROM provided with the book further illustrates his approach to the median, posterior tibial and ulnar nerves as well as the brachial plexus at the thoracic outlet. This is a wonderful addition to the text.Barrett L. Dorko P.T.Table of Contents1. General Neurodynamics2. Specific Neurodynamics3. General Neuropathodynamics4. Diagnosis of specific dysfunctions5. To be sound, any physical therapy method must be based on scientific knowledge of how the musculoskeletal system works, on the role of proprioception in gaining awareness and control over this system, and on the process of becoming more conscious in action. Written for both beginning and advanced students, the book offers in-depth explanations of the theory of neurodynamics together with illustrations outlining steps of development and practical exercises. Over 100 years ago, F. Matthias Alexander made a series of discoveries about how the body works in action that made it possible for the first time to become conscious of what we''re doing in activity. In Neurodynamics, author Theodore Dimon, who has taught and written about Alexander''s work for many years, seeks to put together a coherent theory and curriculum for the Alexander Technique and explain how this system works in scientific terms. Neurodynamics develops and expands on Alexander''s teachings and gives practical explanations that form the basis not just for a method but for a truly educational theory of how the mind and body work in action.
