  • Applications of Biomass-Derived Materials for

Hanser Publications Applications of Biomass-Derived Materials for

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book offers a unique overview of usage of biomass, biomaterials, and bioproducts, including biopolymers. Included are materials, processes, usage as an energy source, and, in particular, applications. It is intended to educate both professionals and graduate students, who typically must acquire knowledge outside of traditional academic disciplines to gain an appreciation of these systems. While the growing need for renewable energy can be satisfied from other renewable sources, biomass is our only real source of renewable carbon-based chemicals and fuels. More and more companies are moving toward using these materials, and investing in new technology based on renewable resources to develop their businesses in a sustainable way.Despite this, few scientists and engineers have been appropriately trained to work in the interdisciplinary field of the biomass economy. Traditional academic disciplines are not well organized to train engineers and scientists to develop new bio-refinery concepts and bio-based products (including bio-based polymers) in industry, nor to develop and integrate pathways to convert biomass into other forms of energy and useful products. The integration of old and new pathways to satisfy global and local markets is the basic skill required to create new biomass processing alternatives. This book is written to fill this gap.

  • Biofuel Production from Microalgae, Macroalgae

Nova Science Publishers Inc Biofuel Production from Microalgae, Macroalgae

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIncreasing energy demand due to the depletion of fossil fuels and the growth of the human population has prompted the search for renewable and sustainable energy feedstocks. Renewable and green biofuels, e.g., biodiesel and bioethanol, are touted as promising surrogates for fossil fuels. The first generation of biofuel feedstock is mainly derived from food sources, e.g., rapeseed oil and sugarcane, whereas second-generation feedstock is derived from inedible and waste sources, e.g., waste cooking oil and forest biomass. However, these feedstocks have several limitations such as a serious impact on the food supply chain, low productivity, and complicated pre-treatment processes. On the other hand, strategic biofuel production from third-generation feedstock, namely, microalgae, macroalgae and larvae, has opened a new direction in the renewable biofuel industries. The third-generation feedstocks offer several benefits, such as fast growing rate, less utilization of arable land and less impact on the food versus fuel feud. Thus, this book is intended to highlight the potential of these new feedstock for biofuel production as well as other applications. The book is mainly divided into three parts, which cover the discussion of upstream and downstream processing technologies of microalgae, macroalgae and larvae. This book is useful to undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as researchers in the biofuel field to understand the overall process chain and conversion technologies of biofuels from third-generation feedstock.Table of ContentsPreface; Microalgae Cultivation Modes and Systems; Microalgae Cultivation in Open Pond and Photobioreactor; Biofuels Production from Microalgae: Processes and Conversion Technologies; Separation of Microalgae from Cultivation Medium; Kinetic Study and Characterization of Nannochloropsis sp. • Transportation Biofuels: Pathways for Production

Royal Society of Chemistry Transportation Biofuels: Pathways for Production

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe transportation industry is still largely reliant on fossil fuels, whose use and extraction have significant environmental costs. Biofuels produced from renewable resources biomass offer a more sustainable alternative. However, it is important that production methods should be energy efficient and that feedstocks should not compete with food sources. Biofuels that meet these criteria are sometimes referred to as second-generation biofuels. The new edition of this book provides updates on the three previously discussed non-conventional pathways for second-generation biofuels, including new experimental results and pilot plant studies. It also includes a completely new chapter looking at developments in combining renewable electricity with fuel production and possible future directions for the transportation industry. It is a useful read for researchers and industrialists working in biofuel development as well as postgraduate students studying fuel alternatives.Table of ContentsIntroduction; Biological Conversion of Syngas into Ethanol; Biological Conversion of Syngas into Methane; Enzymatic Biodiesel; Sustainability and Future Directions; Concluding Remarks

  • Green Gasoline: A Green Spark Transportation Fuel

Royal Society of Chemistry Green Gasoline: A Green Spark Transportation Fuel

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTransportation currently takes up around a third of overall energy usage, of which the majority is petroleum-based gasoline. Petroleum is both a finite resource and a big contributor to the carbon emissions that are causing climate change. To continue to benefit from transportation whilst mitigating climate change it is essential to find alternatives to petroleum-based gasoline. Although a lot of recent developments have focused on electrifying transport the infrastructure for large scale uptake of electric vehicles is still lacking and it may be less practical in some parts of the world than others. Biofuels, therefore, still have a role to play in improving the sustainability of our transportation systems. The term green gasoline refers to biofuels intended to be direct drop-in replacements for petroleum-based gasoline. Such products allow vehicles to run on biofuel without any engine modifications and, being made from biomass, they are both renewable and have a better carbon emission profile than petroleum-based gasoline. Green Gasoline covers a range of new technologies being used to produce these biofuels and compares them to petroleum-based fuels in terms of sustainability. It will be an interesting read for those working in fuel chemistry as well as green chemists and anyone with an interest in transport sustainability.Table of ContentsOrigin and Historical Perspectives of Green Gasoline;Feedstocks for Green Gasoline;Current Lignocellulosic Biomass Logistics and Challenges;Catalysts for Green Gasoline Processing;Conversion Technologies for Green Gasoline;Recent Advances and Challenges in Biobutanol Production;Conversion of Biomass to Green Gasoline: Feedstocks, Technological Advances, and Commercial Scope;Green Gasoline: Integrated Production Processes, Future Perspectives, and Technoeconomic Feasibility;Characterization of Green Gasoline: Existing Standards;Transportation Biofuels: Green Gasoline, Bioethanol, Biodiesel and Green Diesel – A Comparison;Expediency of Green Gasoline in Internal Combustion Engines;Green Anti-knock Agents for Enhancement of Gasoline Performance;Green Gasoline: A Technoeconomic Analysis;Green Gasoline as a Commercial Liquid Fuel Throughout Asia, Europe, and the USA: A Technical Review;Life Cycle Assessment of Green Gasoline;Economic Analysis and Future Perspective of Green Gasoline
