Book SynopsisFocusing on the 1990s as a decade of change, all of the collieries and most of the coal fired power stations of that era have now gone. During that decade I made a point of photographing the collieries and power stations, and the trains that moved the coal, and so amassed a large collection of photographs. Being Worksop-based through my railway career, I am able to describe a potted history of Worksop Depot which opened in 1991, commencing with a brief look at the area in the late 1980s and into the 1990s. The run-up to the privatisation of the railways is followed by the new freight companies which brought changes in coal operations, before the wholesale decline in coal production. There are images taken in the Nott's, Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Leicestershire, and Staffordshire coalfields. Brief descriptions of each colliery and power station illustrated are given, with maps to show their location, along with power station track diagrams, tables, and coal plans to show where power station coal originated. The book concludes with a few instances of locations that Worksop-based drivers served.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements; Introduction; 1 Worksop in the 1980s and 1990s: The Decades of Change; 2 Declining UK Coal Production; 3 Nottinghamshire Area Collieries; 4 Derbyshire Area Collieries; 5 Yorkshire Area Collieries; 6 Leicestershire and Staffordshire Area Collieries; 7 Power Stations; 8 Three Days at Worksop; Bibliography.

Reaktion Books Mining in World History

Book SynopsisMining in World History deals with the history of mining and smelting from the Renaissance to the present day, drawing out, in an engaging and fast-paced fashion, the interplay of personalities, politics and technology which have together shaped the metallurgical industries over the last 500 years. Martin Lynch opens with the invention, sometime before the year 1453, of a revolutionary technique for separating silver from copper, an event that revived the rich copper-silver mines of central Europe and the ruling ambitions of the Habsburg emperors who owned them. The author shows how the flood of silver from Spain's newly-conquered American colonies brought about the demise of these mines, and goes on to examine the far-reaching changes brought to mining and smelting by the steam engine and the Industrial Revolution. The book then looks at the era of the gold rushes and the comprehensive developments in mineral extraction and technology that took place in the United States and South Africa at the end of the nineteenth century, and describes the spread of mass metal-production techniques across the world amid the violent struggles of the twentieth century and the energy crises of the 1970s. Written by an author vastly experienced in the field, Mining in World History is the first book to provide an account of how and why change and advance in this global industry have taken place in different eras and locations around the world. As such it will appeal to the industry specialist as well as to the general reader who wants to know more about a field that has been fundamental to the construction of industrial civilization.Trade Review'This is quite simply the best history ever published on the role of mining in shaping world events. It performs the huge task of making sense of a complex range of industries that took many forms and produced many products, over centuries of change and development across every continent on earth. It does so in just 350 pages of succinct but comprehensive prose, remarkably free of errors of both fact and judgment ...Martin Lynch has managed to present the big picture of mining.' -Historic Environment 'This is quite simply the best history ever published on the role of mining in shaping world events. It can, and will, be used as a reference work, yet it is a splendid story well told. The reader with an interest in history, politics, and economics will find the book rewarding indeed ... The reader with a background in mining history will find the book a joy from beginning to end. Book SynopsisTrade Review"The Eyes of the World is a groundbreaking, brilliantly written book about Congo’s place in the global economy. Smith places artisanal miners of coltan at the center of his study. Contrary to most popular views of the Congolese as victims of global corporations and brutal state authorities, miners recognize their value as experienced workers who often can protect their interests. . . . Smith deftly weaves insights drawn from an array of anthropological theory with gripping, moving case studies of individual miners and mining sites. . . . Strikingly, Smith shows how Western efforts to crack down on 'blood diamonds' end up, in actuality, to be a tool to weaken the leverage of artisanal miners and allow wily state authorities to cash in on their ability to selectively enforce their will on Congolese workers. Book SynopsisMining haul roads are a critical component of surface mining infrastructure and the performance of these roads has a direct impact on operational efficiency, costs and safety. A significant proportion of a mineâs cost is associated with material haulage and well-designed and managed roads contribute directly to reductions in cycle times, fuel burn, tyre costs and overall cost per tonne hauled and critically, underpin a safe transport system. The first comprehensive treatise on mining haul road design, construction, operation and management, Mining Haul Roads â Theory and Practice presents an authoritative compendium of worldwide experience and state-of-the-art practices developed and applied over the last 25 years by the three authors, over three continents and many of the worldâs leading surface mining operations. Taylor & Francis Ltd Coal Cultures

Book SynopsisCoal is the commodity that powered the technologies that made the modern world. It also brought about unique communities marked by a high degree of social solidarity and self-help. Mining was central to working class life, drawing rural populations into industrial labour, but it often took place in picturesque landscapes, so that its black spoil heaps became a central symbol of the degradation of pastoral life by the demands of an extractive industry. Throughout Europe and the USA photographers have pictured the characteristic landscapes of the industry, and continue to do so as strip mining devastates huge areas of land. Not only landscape photography but also documentary, portraiture, photojournalism and art photography have been used in order to portray mines and miners. This book presents three interlinked strands of investigation. The first is the way in which the production of coal created paradigmatic communities grounded in particular landscapes. The second concerns the role ofTrade Review"Coal Cultures is ambitious in its scope, interesting in its detail and very enjoyable to read. Derrick Price brings his formidable scholarship to explore the sophisticated dynamics of the cultures in and around that seemingly most basic of all commodities, coal. To do so within a complex global context is impressive." --National Museum Wales - Paul Cabuts, Honorary Research Fellow at Amguedffa Cymru"In Coal Cultures, Derrick Price tracks the long history of visual culture around coal production, livelihoods and impacts, starting with 16th century woodprints of mining technology. ... This is a comprehensive survey of visual approaches to finding meaning in coal landscapes and lifestyles: from othering to humanising its people, and from seeing ruin to order in its landscapes. ... Price digs nicely into gender issues here, including photos of women miners and the exploring the persistence of sexualisation and sexism they faced."--Visual Studies"Coal Cultures offers a valuable overview of the intersections between mining and visual culture, illustrating how our understanding of the industry and its impact has been shaped by its depiction. In going beyond the work ofmining itself to explore the communities and landscapes shaped by that labour, Price demonstrates that photography and visual culture can be useful means to establish how labour, society and the environment are interlinked. The book assembles a considerable range of material that will appeal to those with interests in both mining and visual culture, as well as their relationship to heritage and the environment."--History of Photography"Price has most definitely succeeded in providing a fascinating and highly stimulating cultural-history analysis of the various representations (both photographic/visual and metaphorical) of the coal industry, its environmental legacy, coalfield communities, and its industrial heritage. It deserves to be widely read."--History Workshop JournalTable of ContentsTable of ContentsList of IllustrationsIntroduction 1. Degradation and regeneration2. Images of miners3. Mining communities4. Book SynopsisThe first scholarly history of the Ladysmith miners, the Great Strike of 1912-1914, and the coalmining industry on Vancouver Island.Trade ReviewJohn R. Hinde has written an engaged, subtle, and provocative account of coal miners on Vancouver Island. His study focuses on the 1898-1913 and on the mines in the vicinity of Ladysmith, but it includes context that illuminates the history of the industry throughout the island. -- Alan McCullough * Western Historical Quarterly, Summer 2005 *John R. Hinde’s rather understated title seems to imply that his book is simply as study of Vancouver Island’s coal industry as viewed through one community: Ladysmith. But his book is much more, for Hinde has a number of points to make about such topics as class-consciousness, radicalism, and militancy. In fact, this book is meant to be corrective. Throughout the text, he challenges interpretations other historians have developed while studying the area’s coal mines. Canadian labour historians will find the book interesting reading. -- David A. Wolff, Black Hills State University * Pacific Northwest Quarterly, Spring 2005 *Hinde’s community study is well researched and well grounded in Canadian working-class historiography. -- Sean T. Cadigan * Canadian Literature 184, Spring 2005 *The author provides a thorough and sensitive post-mortem of Ladysmith’s most troubled days. Well-researched, lucid, and supplemented with almost two dozen photographs, When Coal was King will appeal to a variety of readers. -- Chris Morier, University of Victoria * Scientia Canadensis, Vol. 28, 2005 *This history of coal-mining in and around Ladysmith on Vancouver Island from the 1850s to the First World War is scholarly and well research, sympathetic to the coal miners and their families and aware of the context and the times of their rough lives. -- Patricia Marchak * University of Toronto Quarterly, vol. 75, no. 1, Winter 2006 *Table of ContentsIllustrationsIntroduction1 A Selfish Millionaire2 A Town of Merry Hearts3 Down in the Dark and Gloomy Dungeons4 Death’s Cold Hand5 From Pillar to Post6 The Great Strike7 No Ordinary RiotConclusionNotes; Bibliography; Index

Spar Platforms: Technology and Analysis Methodsexamines the design, analysis, and use of spar platforms for offshore oil production. Since the first spar platform, the Oryx Neptune, was installed in the Gulf of Mexico in 1996, spars have evolved into a proven, reliable technology for oil drilling and production in deep and remote areas. Three spar concepts are in use today: the classic spar, the truss spar, and the cell spar. Although the technology and analysis methods are considered mature, technical challenges remain, including understanding and suppressing vortex-induced motion and improving survivability in category 4 and 5 hurricanes. This volume surveys the history of spar development and presents detailed design modeling aspects of spar hull, mooring, and anchoring systems. Virtually all of the information is original content, representing the latest information from more than 250 internationally recognised mining industry experts.Trade ReviewThis comprehensive reference work distills the entire body of knowledge that characterizes mining engineering as a disciplinary field. While it may serve as a textbook for advanced students, its primary function is to provide professional practitioners with an authoritative reference and design source. The book also serves mining nonprofessionals who seek technical knowledge of the industry. The handbook devotes attention to all branches of mining- metal, coal, and nonmetal- and to all locates of mining- surface, underground, and hybrid. Although the main emphasis is US mining, numerous references are made to international practice.""- Publisher Comments;""Practical rather than theoretical, international in approach and examples, expansive in scope yet not encyclopedic- this reference continues the legacy of its predecessors as the handbook of choice among mining engineers. The original reference was published in 1918, by John Wiley & Sons, which, after a couple of editions, ceded publication to the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration. First and second editions were published by SME in 1973 and 1992. This third edition occupies two volumes and covers market economics, exploration, deposit assessment, mining method selection, ground mechanics, surface extraction, underground development, and health and safety, among other topics; concluding chapters cover (for the first time) social and environmental issues, including how to mitigate and manage negative impact. UK-based editor Peter Darling has had a 30-year career first as a mining engineer and then as a technical writer specializing in mining issues.""- Book News Inc. Portland, OR
