Book SynopsisA detailed history of how sick building syndrome came into being: how indoor exposures to chemicals wafting from synthetic carpet, solvents, and so on became something that office workers felt and protested againstTrade Review“Sick Building Syndrome and the Problem of Uncertainty is all at once about the women’s health movement, ventilation, cybernetics, virology, and chemical toxicity. It is labor history and medical history wrapped into a fiercely disputed knot. Unraveling that tangle, and using the Syndrome to tell us about who we were at the turn of the millennium, Michelle Murphy has written a remarkable, insightful book.”—Peter Galison, author of Einstein’s Clocks, Poincaré’s Maps: Empires of Time“How does an illness come into being? In this provocative study, Michelle Murphy takes us on a journey into the making of an environmental illness, into the spaces of the modern office building, gendered labor practices, and workers’ bodies to reveal what is perceived and what is invisible in the built environment where many Americans spend their working days. How sick buildings and indoor air pollution became visible problems in environmental health is a story that takes us far beyond the architectural history of office buildings. It takes us deep into the architecture of reality: into how we know and what we know about environmental exposures and the uncertainties they pose both to knowledge and human health.”—Gregg Mitman, author of The State of Nature: Ecology, Community, and American Social Thought, 1900–1950Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Introduction 1 1. Book SynopsisInteractions between competitors, predators and their prey have traditionally been seen as the foundation of community structure. Parasites - long ignored in community ecology and the care necessary bio-security are now recognised to play an important role in influencing species interactions and, consequently affecting the functioning of the ecosystem. Parasitism can interact with other ecological drivers, resulting in both adverse and beneficial effects on biodiversity and ecosystem health. Species interactions involving parasites are also keys to understanding many biological invasions and emerging infectious diseases. This book bridges the gap between ecology and epidemiology community to create a comprehensive examination of how parasites and pathogens affect all aspects of ecological communities, enabling a new generation of environmentalists to include parasites as a key element in their studies may be parasites human or animal, terrestrial or aquatic environments.

Book SynopsisDue to the extensive use of treated wood products throughout urban and agricultural communities, information concerning the environmental and health risks associated with treated wood is very much in demand. Responding to increasing need for a comprehensive and cohesive source on this topic, Environmental Impacts of Treated Wood compiles the latest information concerning regulations, environmental impact studies, new wood preservative formulations, and state-of-the-art disposal technologies available for minimizing environmental impacts caused by treated wood.Beginning with a background of the production of the most common treated wood products, this book discusses how chemical leaching and transport of certain wood preservatives affect the environment, particularly chromated copper arsenate. A separate section is devoted to case studies that evaluate possible links with cancer and other health risks with repeated exposure to treated wood. Several chapters discuss ways to measure exposure and review various approaches to risk assessment and management. Because treated wood products last a long time, the book also considers the disposal of treated wood in terms of human and environmental impact. It explores novel disposal technologies and practical strategies for complying with regulatory phase-outs of certain treated wood products within the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, and many Asian countries. These include recycling, bioremediation, thermal treatment, and landfills.Environmental Impacts of Treated Wood provides a timely compilation of perspectives necessary for making informed, conscientious decisions in the production, use, and disposal of treated woods that will minimize the environmental impact and human exposure risks associated with treated wood products today.Trade Review"This book is an excellent reference for anyone with a serious interest in understanding today's environmental problems resulting from the more conventional treated wood products."Tristan Roberts in Environmental Building News, Volume 15, Number 8Table of ContentsIntroduction and Background. This book is intended for professionals around the world in disciplines related to contaminant bioavailability in aquatic organisms, contaminant fate and transport, remediation technologies, and risk assessment of aquatic and wetland ecosystems.Trade Review"This book not only fills an important gap in advancing our understanding of the environmental behavior of trace elements in waterlogged soils and sediments, but also gives valuable advice for those applying this knowledge in risk assessment, remediation and management of contaminated wetlands and aquatic environments."— Rainer Schulin, ETH Zürich, Switzerland"In Trace Elements in Waterlogged Soils and Sediments, a recent offering from CRC Press, editors Rinklebe, Knox and Paller have assembled contributions from an impressive list of accomplished researchers actively working in the field of trace element biogeochemistry as it pertains to waterlogged environmental systems. The book is composed of eighteen chapters roughly divided into three sections focused on fundamental processes, bioavailability, and remediation options. While providing some specific case studies related to a diverse range of contaminated systems, the chapters also contain significant fundamental material that make it equally beneficial to students and more experienced practitioners with interest in this field of study."— John C. Seaman, University of Georgia, USAWetland and other water-logged soils are of special importance in providing particular ecosystem services such as hydrological buffering, organic carbon storage, habitat and biodiversity source. Sediments play a role of similar importance as components of the aquatic environment at the bottom of water bodies. Both have in common that they also act as sinks for recalcitrant chemicals and as such are increasingly loaded with trace elements of anthropogenic origin. Due to the dominance of anaerobic conditions, the fate of trace elements in water-logged soils and sediments is governed by very different processes and mechanisms in these environments as compared to well-aerated soils. Against this backdrop, it is all the more remarkable how little we still know about these processes and the factors driving them. This book thus is very timely. It is also very comprehensive. In eighteen chapters written by experts in the respective fields, it gives the latest findings and insights into physicochemical factors and reactions controlling the speciation and binding of heavy metals and metalloids in water-logged soils and sediments, their bioavailability and the assessment of associated risks for humans and other recipients, and also on established remediation technology. Several chapters have a focus on redox-sensitive metals and metalloids such as arsenic, selenium, chromium and uranium. Some deal with new contaminants such as rare earth elements, others with ‘usual suspects’ such as cadmium and zinc. While various contributions are devoted to more fundamental aspects such as the kinetics of sorption and desorption processes or the mechanisms governing the retention and mobility of nanoparticles in aquatic environments, others provide insight into the role of particular environments such as paddies and other temporary flooded soils for trace element behavior or present specific case studies, e.g. on the fate of subsurface chromium on the Hanford site. In summary, this book not only fills an important gap in advancing our understanding of the environmental behavior of trace elements in waterlogged soils and sediments, but also gives valuable advice for those applying this knowledge in risk assessment, remediation and management of contaminated wetlands and aquatic environments.--- Rainer Schulin, Professor for Soil Protection, ETH Zürich, Institute of Terrestrial Ecosystems, SwitzerlandIn Trace Elements in Waterlogged Soils and Sediment, editors Rinklebe, Knox and Paller have assembled contributions from an impressive list of accomplished researchers actively working in the field of trace element biogeochemistry as it pertains to waterlogged environmental systems. Book SynopsisAs part of its "Programme for the prevention of health hazards caused by industrial substances", the Berufsge- nossenschaft der chemischen Industrie (BG Chemie, Em- ployment Accident Insurance Fund of the Chemical Indus- try) began in 1977 to investigate the toxicity of those chemicals which are widely used, have many different ap- plications and are suspected of being dangerous to health, in particular of having long-term effects. The in- vestigations consist of a literature search and - depending on the results - commissions of experimental studies. It is hoped by means of this testing to close gaps in our know- ledge and to increase the scientific validity of the required risk assessments. The results of the toxicological in- vestigations carried out by BG Chemie, and the resulting substance assessments have been published in German since 1987 in the form of 132 "Toxikologische Bewer- tungen" ("Toxicological Evaluations") up to now. In order to make this useful information internation- ally available, BG Chemie began in October 1990 to pub- lish them as a book series in English, of which the sixth volume (containing 11 individual evaluations) is presented here. Therefore for 83 existing chemicals 'Toxicological Evaluations" are available in English at the moment, a fur- ther 27 are in preparation and will be published soon.Table of ContentsMonochloroacetic acid.- Benzene sulphonic acid hydrazide.- 1,3-Di-o-tolylguanidine.- 4-Nitrophenol.- 2-Methyl-3-butyn-2-Ol.- N-Carboxyanthranilic acid anhydride.- Propionaldehyde.- Azodicarbonamide.- Isobutylidenediurea.- Hydroxylamine and its salts.- Hydroxylamine hydrochloride.- Hydroxylamine sulphate.- Hydroxylamine bisulphate.- Zinc ethylphenyldithiocarbamate.- Compound chemical index vol. 1–6.

Book SynopsisThe lifestyles and socio-economic status that are prevalent in regions of the world with limited resources form the background for the unique features of neoplastic diseases in these areas, where the majority of the world population lives. The predominance of the world’s retroviral burden of in these areas further compounds the nature and challenges of the cancer there. Much of the international cancer literature covers the nature and challenges of the disease as seen in high-income regions of the world, thereby giving a skewed view of the global cancer challenges. As the low- and middle-income regions of the world transition from communicable to non communicable disease patterns, there is a need for a corresponding paradigm shift, with increased emphasis on what the world needs to know about non communicable diseases, including cancer, where the disease is hitherto poorly documented. The main goal of the proposed book is to contribute to this outcomes.Table of ContentsPart IV: Future Perspectives Chapter 10 – Strategies for progress Abstract Section 10.1.0: The role of international partnership in the development of global health systems Section 10.1.1: Models of humanitarian global outreach in health care Section 10.1.2: The concept of “convergence” and the future of health care research Section 10.1.3.0: The concept of global health Section 10.1.3.1: Models of global health partnership in cancer control Section 10.1.3.2: The tiered resource stratification framework of the Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) Network Section 10.1.3.3: ASCO’s resource-stratified guidelines for the management of invasive cervical cancer Section 10.1.3.4: NCCN framework for resource stratification for invasive cervical cancer Section 10.1.3.5: Resource-stratified approaches in the primary prevention of cervical cancer Section 10.1.3.5.1 ASCO resource-stratified guideline for the primary prevention of cervical cancer Section 10.1.3.6: Resource-stratified approaches in the secondary prevention of cervical cancer Section 10.1.3.4.1: Selected Global Health Activities for promoting cancer control/Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) Section 10.1.3.4.2 Global Curriculum and Mentoring Program Section 10.1.3.4.3: Global Curriculum and Mentoring Program/International Development and Education Award Section 10.1.3.4.4: Proposal for recognizing global oncology as an academic field Section 10.2: Overcoming barriers to progress in the control of cancer and retroviral diseases, including HIV/AIDS Section 10.2.1: Prioritizing strategies for universal health coverage Section 10.2.1.1: mHealth Strategies for Universal Health Coverage Section 10.2.1.2: Community Health Insurance Coverage as a strategy for Universal Health Care Section 10.2.1.3: Innovation in provider training as a strategy in UHC Section 10.2.2: The role of politics in attainment of Universal Health Coverage Section 10.2.3: The role of science and engineering in human welfare Section 10.2.3.1: The role of science Section 10.2.3.1.1: Science advocacy Section 10.2.3.1.2: Science education in low- and middle-income countries Section 10.2.3.1.3 Examples of the transforming effect of science in LMICs Section 10.2.3.1.3.1 Impact of science on the emergence of South Korea Section 10.2.3.1.3.2: Impact of science on Middle-Eastern cooperation Section 10.2.3.1.3.3: Impact of the US-Cuba scientific diplomacy Section 10.2.3.1.3.4: Boosting science in Singapore Section 10.2.3.1.3.5: India boosts its ambitious space program Section 10.2.3.2: Transforming the practice of engineering to meet global health needs Section 10.2.3.3 Models in innovation with potentials for cancer and HIV/AIDS control in LMICs Section 10.2.3.3.1: Affordable, weather durable x-ray machine Section 10.2.3.3.2: Affordable cancer immunotherapy in Cuba Section 10.2.3.3.3: The smart village for rural electrification Section 10.2.3.3.4: HIV/AIDS control in China Section 10.3: The future of control of cancer and retroviral diseases Page 1055: Section 10.3.1: From the National Cancer Act to the 21st Century Cures Act Page 1059: Section 10.3.2: Advances in lung cancer prevention Page 1062: Section 10.3.3: Ending the HIV/AIDS pandemic Page 1063: Section 10.3.4: Finding a cure for AIDS – a possible convergence of cancer and HIV/AIDS researchIndex

Book SynopsisThis proceedings volume results from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on 'Biomarkers of Radiation in the Environment: Robust Tools for Risk Assessment (BRITE)’. The BRITE workshop discussed insights from cancer research, epigenetics, non-human and human risk assessment, since many of the state-of-the-art biomarkers being developed for humans deserve consideration for environmental applications and vice versa. Sessions were very wide-ranging covering methods, mechanisms, cross disciplinary application and regulation. The chapters in this book have been grouped into five major themes that were covered by the BRITE workshop:· Techniques for biomarker development· Low-dose effect mechanisms· Biomarkers for risk evaluation· Biomarkers in wildlife· Biomarker use and responses Each chapter has been written independently and reflects the views of the chapter author(s). Therefore, the readers can form their own balanced view of the different perspectives on biomarkers of radiation in the environment. Given the breadth of topics covered and the state-of-the-art perspectives shared by leading experts in their respective fields, this book should form a valuable resource for anyone with an interest in how biomarkers can be used to improve our understanding of radiation in the environment and its potential impacts.Table of ContentsTECHNIQUES FOR BIOMARKER DEVELOPMENT.- Chapter 1. • The Sanitation Triangle: Socio-Culture, Health

Springer Verlag, Singapore The Sanitation Triangle: Socio-Culture, Health

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book deals with global sanitation, where SDG 6.2 sets a target of enabling access to sanitation services for all, but has not yet been achieved in low- and middle-income countries. The transition from the United Nations MDGs to the SDGs requires more consideration based on the socio-cultural aspects of global sanitation. In other words, equitable sanitation for those in vulnerable situations could be based on socio-cultural contexts. Sanitation is a system that comprises not only a latrine but also the works for the treatment and disposal of human waste. Sanitation systems do not function by themselves but have significance only through social management. The process of decision-making also largely depends on socio-cultural conditions, and the importance of sanitation needs to be socially acknowledged. The health benefits of sanitation improvement—among the significant contributions of sanitation—also need to be considered in the socio-cultural milieu. Further, the social-culture itself is affected, and potentially even created, by sanitation. In this context, more progress on the improvement of sanitation requires a more holistic approach across disciplines. In this book, we present the concept of the Sanitation Triangle, which considers the interconnections of health, materials, and socio-culture in sanitation, as a holistic approach, and the case studies based on the Sanitation Triangle by diverse disciplines such as Cultural Anthropology, Development Studies, Health Sciences, Engineering, and Science Communication. By the deep theoretical examinations and inter-dialogues between the different disciplines, this book explores the potentialities of inter-disciplinary studies on global sanitation.Table of Contents
