Book SynopsisTHE NO.1 BESTSELLER!''I read it in one sitting, it''s a superb book'' Eamon Dunphy, The Stand ''An astonishing exposé'' Martin Ziegler, The TimesOver the course of fifteen years, John Delaney ran the Football Association of Ireland as his own personal fiefdom. He had his critics, but his power was never seriously challenged until last year, when Mark Tighe and Paul Rowan published a sequence of stories in the Sunday Times containing damaging revelations about his personal compensation and the parlous financial situation of the FAI. Delaney''s reputation as a great financial manager was left in tatters. He resigned under pressure, and the FAI was left hoping for a massive bail-out from the Irish taxpayer. In Champagne Football, Tighe and Rowan dig deep into the story of Delaney''s career and of the FAI''s slide into ruin. They show how he surrounded himself with people whose personal loyalty he could count on, and a board that failed to notice that the association''s finances were shot. They detail Delaney''s skilful cultivation of opinion-formers outside the FAI. And they document the culture of excess that Delaney presided over and benefited from, to the detriment of the organization he led.Champagne Football is a gripping, sometimes darkly hilarious and often enraging piece of reporting by the award-winning journalists who finally pulled back the curtain on the FAI''s mismanagement.____________''Excellent'' Irish Sun''A jaw-dropping story ... brilliant'' Irish Times''Essential reading'' Irish Daily Star''Astonishing ... • Communication and Contradiction in the NCAA

Peter Lang Publishing Inc Communication and Contradiction in the NCAA

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisCommunication and Contradiction in the NCAA: An Unlevel Playing Field is a critical examination of the contradictory nature of the NCAA, and how the inherent contradictions impact the communication activities of its constituents, supporters, and challengers. At the heart of the NCAA is the student-athlete, born out of an idealistic collection of communal values that is often at odds with institutional practices. The rhetorical negotiation of the student-athlete's identity informs and confuses communication practices on a number of levels, from interpersonal interactions to organizational apologia. Because the student-athlete is critical to maintaining the collegiate athletics orientation, the NCAA works overtime in promoting, maintaining, and defending it in the face of public scrutiny. The NCAA and its member institutions, like any organization, are compelled to answer public accusations, often working to defend inconsistent policies to an increasingly hostile audience. InTrade Review"Communication and Contradiction in the NCAA is a unique, and in a lot of ways refreshing, take on the various competing values and narratives present around the largest collegiate governing body. The collection of studies approach this examination from a number of different theoretical, contextual and methodological perspectives that make for a great read for sports communication, sports management and sports sociology scholars. Yet we are living in an era where the principles of good governance are being challenged, raising numerous questions about its principles, application and management. As such, this is a timely text that addresses many of the most pertinent issues facing sports governance today. If sport is to effectively confront the governance challenges it faces, it is clear that Winand and Anagnostopoulos' Research Handbook must form a central part of our thinking about how we can ensure that sport is governed in an optimal way.' --Simon Chadwick, University of Salford, UKTable of ContentsContents: 1. Book SynopsisShortlisted for the 2023 Sports Book Awards for Best Sports Writing of the Year The British, who are rightly proud of their sporting traditions, are now having to come to terms with the dark, unacknowledged, past of racism in sport – until now the truth that dare not speak its name. Conscious and unconscious racism have for decades blighted the lives of talented black and Asian sportsmen and women, preventing them from fulfilling their potential. In Formula One, despite Lewis Hamilton’s stellar achievements, barely one per cent of the 40,000 people employed in the sport are of ethnic minority heritage. In football, Britain’s premier sport, the number of non-white managers in the professional game remains pitifully small. And in cricket, Azeem Rafiq’s testimony to the Commons select committee has exposed the scandal of prejudice faced by Asian cricketers in the game. Veteran author and journalist Mihir Bose examines the way racism has affected black and Asian sportsmen and women and how attitudes have evolved over the past fifty years. He looks in depth at the controversies that have beset sport at all levels: from grassroots to international competitions and how the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement has had a seismic impact throughout sport, with black sports personalities leading the fight against racism. However, this has also led to a worrying white fatigue. Talking to people from playing field to boardroom and the media world, he illustrates the complexities and striking contrasts in attitudes towards race. We hear the voices of players, coaches and administrators as Mihir Bose explores the question of how the dream of a truly non-racial sports world can become a reality. The Marcus Rashford mural featured on the cover was commissioned by the Withington Walls community art project, created by artist AskeP19 (@akse_p19) and based on photography by Danny Cheetham (@dannycheetham).
