Edition Axel Menges Beauty Design: Cosmetics as Intention &
Book SynopsisText in English & German. Cosmetically-enhanced beauty is something that has existed for decades. Over the course of the last century, however, a cosmetics industry has arisen that is worth millions. Its products claim to optimise visual appearance, to bestow inner and outer health and to delay aging, under a veneer of medical credibility and reliable results. Cosmetics deals in alleged 'deep-acting' substances, which are supposed to detoxify and to purify the body from within. However, the whole arsenal of cosmetic ingredients is founded more on persuasion than conviction. Cosmetics is always a matter of mimicking an ideal. To this extent, cosmetic discourse deals in what might be described as an iconography of hunger -- it requires and is predicated upon a feeling of lack. At the same time, it promises to remedy that lack. The referential frame for cosmetics is constituted by cultural history and iconology, by semiotics and sociology, by psychology and rhetoric. Like fashion, it has called into being a linguistic system of considerable depth and complexity; one that draws its subtexts from futurology and history, from medicine and alchemy, from nostalgia and from heritage preservation. Cosmetics are supposed to make one more attractive and more seductive -- to make one positively irresistible, in fact. Cosmetics hold out the prospect of sexiness to women and men alike. All that one has to do is to acquire the right creams and lotions, the right palette of powders and rouges, of lipsticks and mascara, and one has a form of beauty that can be bought! The persuasive power of cosmetics is as dominant as it is irresistible. All of us could resist it if we wished to. And yet we don't wish to. This book exposes the rhetorical system behind the promises of cosmetics in terms of the histories of cultures and of mentalities, analysing the verbal/visual messages of selected examples. The internationally known architecture and design historian Volker Fischer was deputy director of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt am Main for over ten years. Since 1995 he has built up a new design department in the Museum for Applied Arts in Frankfurt; in addition to his museum work he teaches history of architecture and design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach. Volker Fischer is already represented in Edition Axel Menges by books on Stefan Wewerka, Richard Meier, the Commerzbank in Frankfurt by Norman Foster, Hall 3 of Messe Frankfurt am Main by Nicholas Grimshaw, and the design activities of Lufthansa.

Oxford University Press Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery
Book SynopsisObesity has quickly become an epidemic. People suffering from significant overweight often have to contend with a lifetime of comorbidities, social stigma, and lower quality of life. Recently, more and more people are undergoing weight loss surgery as a way to resolve these issues. If you are working with pre or post-operative bariatric surgery patients, your goal is to teach them the skills they need to ensure themselves a successful surgical outcome. After surgery, patients are required to adhere to a strict diet and the very specific recommendations of their surgical team. Without a high level of commitment from the patient to follow these recommendations, the potential for maintained weight loss after surgery is very limited.Preparing for Your Weight Loss Surgery, Therapist Guide contains a series of scientifically tested cognitive-behavioural techniques to help you prepare your patient for the post-operative challenges of creating radically changed eating and lifestyle habits. It pTrade Review"These volumes are an extremely useful addition to the field. Psychological and behavioral preparation is a critical part of the bariatric surgery process, yet it has been sorely underemphasized in the literature up to this point. These volumes give this important topic the attention it deserves."-- Scott Crow, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry, University of Minnesota "Very little has been available for mental health professionals who work with bariatric surgery patients preparing them for surgery, despite the fact that many important issues need to be discussed before this life changing procedure. Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery Therapist Guide and Workbook by Apple, Lock and Peebles provides a very important, practical and user-friendly work which nicely fills this void. Therapists working with this group of patients can use these materials with confidence, knowing that the texts are informed by the latest research in the area and are both pragmatic and clinically informed. These materials represent a major step forward in the care of patients who will be undergoing bariatric surgery."-- James E. Mitchell, M.D., Christoferson Professor and Chair, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences "The recent surge in the use of bariatric surgery, because of its effectiveness in the treatment of obesity, has outpaced the development of methods to prepare individuals, before and after surgery, for the behavior changes that need to occur in relation to food. These manuals therefore, fill an urgent need to prepare patients, both adolescents and adults, for bariatric surgery and provide sensible guidelines for the patient (and therapist) for the management of potential post-operative problems." State University Press of New York (SUNY) Feminist Phenomenology and Medicine
Book SynopsisPhenomenological insights into health issues relating to bodily self-experience, normality and deviance, self-alienation, and objectification.Situated at the intersection of phenomenology of medicine and feminist phenomenology, this volume provides insights into medical practices such as surgical operations, organ transplants, dentistry, midwifery, and psychiatry. The contributors make clear the relevance of feminist phenomenology to the fields of medicine and health by highlighting difference, vulnerability, and volatility as central dimensions of human experience rather than deviations. It also further vitalizes the field of phenomenology by bringing it into conversation with a range of different materials-including case studies, fiction, and other forms of narrative-and shedding new light on issues like bodily self-experience, normality and deviance, self-alienation, and objectification. The volume''s focus on concrete experience develops and sharpens the methodological tools and conceptual framework of phenomenology and makes it an excellent resource for scholars, students, and medical practitioners alike.

Manchester University Press Rhinoplasty and the Nose in Early Modern British
Book SynopsisChallenging histories of plastic surgery that posit a complete disappearance of Gaspare Tagliacozzi’s rhinoplasty operation after his death in 1599, Rhinoplasty and the nose in early modern British medicine and culture traces knowledge of the procedure within the early modern British medical community, through to its impact on the nineteenth-century revival of skin-flap facial surgeries. The book explores why such a procedure was controversial, and the cultural importance of the nose, offering critical readings of literary noses from Shakespeare to Laurence Sterne. Medical knowledge of the graft operation was accompanied by a spurious story that the nose would be constructed from flesh purchased from a social inferior, and would drop off when that person died. The volume therefore explores this narrative in detail for its role in the procedure’s stigmatisation, its engagement with the doctrine of medical sympathy, and its unique attempt to commoditise living human flesh.Trade Review'this is a carefully researched and convincing book about the multi-layered reception of one controversial surgical procedure. Manchester University Press Beautyscapes: Mapping Cosmetic Surgery Tourism
Book SynopsisBeautyscapes explores the global phenomenon of international medical travel, focusing on patient-consumers seeking cosmetic surgery outside their home country and on those who enable them to access treatment abroad, including surgeons and facilitators. It documents the journeys of those who travel for treatment abroad, as well as the nature and power relations of the IMT industry. Empirically rich and theoretically sophisticated, Beautyscapes draws on key themes of interest to students and researchers interested in globalisation and mobility to explain the nature and growing popularity of cosmetic surgery tourism. Richly illustrated with ethnographic material and with the voices of those directly involved in cosmetic surgery tourism, Beautyscapes explores cosmetic surgery journeys from Australia and China to East-Asia and from the UK to Europe and North Africa.Trade Review'Perhaps most importantly, this book is a good read. The characters are bright and affecting. Contradictions are brought to the fore and left unresolved, leaving the reader space to draw their own interpretations. It speaks particularly to the interests of scholars and students from sociology, STS, critical geography and anthropology, but will be useful to anyone who is curious about examining how global networks of practice form and hold together.'Sociology of Health & Illness -- .Table of Contents1 Clinical trails: researching cosmetic surgery tourism2 Cosmetic investments3 Locating cosmetic surgery tourism4 The work of cosmetic surgery tourism I: care-giving companions and medical travel facilitators5 The work of cosmetic surgery tourism II: health workers and patients6 Community and little narratives7 Decentring and disorienting cosmetic surgery tourism8 Cosmetic convivialities and cosmopolitan beginnings9 ConclusionsIndex

Nova Science Publishers Inc Regenerative Plastic Surgery
Book SynopsisRegenerating damaged organs and tissues, an act that once was considered magic, is currently entrusted to the surgeons who have allowed us to move from replacement and reconstructive plastic surgery to regenerative plastic surgery, through autologous and allogeneic cell-based therapies and growth factors. The enthusiasm for regenerative plastic surgery and for the treatment of some pathologies addressed by it, such as breast reconstruction, hemifacial atrophy, burns, scars, and aesthetic improvements such as breast and buttock augmentation, face rejuvenation and hair regrowth, has led the author, Professor Pietro Gentile, to rigorously investigate the possible new minimally invasive strategies based on adipose-derived stem cells, human follicle stem cells and growth factors contained in platelet-rich plasma. This book reports on the latest knowledge regarding the treatment of soft and bone tissue defects. Therefore, the goal of this text is to introduce and definitively establish this new and interesting field of plastic surgery, called regenerative plastic surgery.

Berghahn Books Remaking the Human: Cosmetic Technologies of Body
Book Synopsis The technological capacity to transform biology - repairing, reshaping and replacing body parts, chemicals and functions – is now part of our lives. Humanity is confronted with a variety of affordable and non-invasive 'enhancement technologies': anti-ageing medicine, aesthetic surgery, cognitive and sexual enhancers, lifestyle drugs, prosthetics and hormone supplements. This collection focuses on why people find these practices so seductive and provides ethnographic insights into people’s motives and aspirations as they embrace or reject enhancement technologies, which are closely entangled with negotiations over gender, class, age, nationality and ethnicity.Trade Review “This is a brilliant collection of essays about recent trends on body modifications and bodily performances… this is a great example of how anthropology can move on, addressing new issues while keeping grounded on the overarching questions of free-will and social determinations, resources and inequalities.” • Cristiana Bastos, University of Lisbon “The book presents a timely and serious interdisciplinary analysis of contemporary body modification practices located in diverse cultural contexts. A range of topics/practices are covered and the importance of an intersectional frame is emphasized throughout. It constitutes an original contribution to a field dominated by health-focused and psychological accounts.” • Brendan Gough, Leeds Beckett UniversityTable of Contents List of Figures Acknowledgements Introduction: The Uncanny Aesthetics of Repairing, Reshaping, and Replacing Human Bodies Alvaro Jarrín and.Chiara Pussetti PART I: REPAIR Chapter 1. BenBella Books The Park Avenue Face: Secrets and Tips from a Top
Book SynopsisYour face defines you. It influences how people perceive you at work, at play, and even at home. But what if something about your face doesn't make you feel like the real you? In The Park Avenue Face, dual board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Andrew Jacono reveals how to achieve flawless, undetectable plastic surgery so you can fix what you don't like, restore what you've lost, or prevent signs of aging. From his elite Park Avenue aesthetic surgery center, Dr. Jacono has enhanced tens of thousands of faces not by prescribing an arbitrary standard of beauty, but by amplifying each patient's individual beauty for totally natural results. A global authority in advanced facial plastic surgery, he has presented clinical research and conducted live surgery in front of peer audiences at over 100 plastic surgery symposiums around the world, including at Harvard, Yale and Stanford Universities. Now, he's ready to share his expertise with you. High-end Park Avenue clients want to fight the signs of aging while highlighting their best features. They want lips that look like their own lips, eyes that look like their own eyes. They want facial features in line with their ethnicities. Park Avenue clients want to look powerful yet approachable, wise yet fresh, and above all, natural. With Dr. Andrew Jacono's advice, you can have the Park Avenue Face no matter who you are or where you live. The Park Avenue Face also highlights a trend unique to the United States—a distinct difference between conceptions of beauty on the west coast versus the east coast. Where the West Coast Style is often about changing your personal signature, the East Coast Style prioritizes maintaining your personal signature. Through this up-close look at coastal trends, the reader will learn how to define and achieve a natural look—a face that reflects the person they have always been, and the person they strive to be, not someone they don't recognize in the mirror. If you want a face with character and depth that looks ageless and don't want a stretched, artificial or generic look, Dr. Jacono will show you how to get there. If you are considering any kind of facial enhancement, from minor and non-invasive treatments such as simple injections or a laser treatment to more involved surgical procedures such as a full-on facelift, this is your resource. The Park Avenue Face will show you how to avoid the quacks, the fads, the financial waste, and the dangers. Dr. Jacono will help you determine how you want to look and how best to get there. Featuring fascinating patient anecdotes, dozens of before-and-after photographs showing what the various procedures can accomplish and line drawings by veteran medical illustrator William Winn, this comprehensive guide will fully prepare you to step into a doctor's office and discuss your facial enhancement options. You'll know how each treatment works, how long you will take to recover, and how much change you can expect. If there is something about your face you think is holding you back—decide if making a change is right for you. Let The Park Avenue Face guide you to becoming your best you.Trade Review“An honest look behind the curtain at today’s advanced facial enhancement options from a world leader in the field and the one I trusted with my own face.” —Dr. Paul Nassif, plastic surgeon and television personality“I have known Dr. Jacono for many years and have always been very impressed by his superior surgical skills, teaching abilities, and amazing results in facial rejuvenation.
