Microscopy Books
Taylor & Francis Ltd Topics in Electron Diffraction and Microscopy of Materials
Book SynopsisTopics in Electron Diffraction and Microscopy of Materials celebrates the retirement of Professor Michael Whelan from the University of Oxford. Professor Whelan taught many of today''s heads of department and was a pioneer in the development and use of electron microscopy. His collaborators and colleagues, each one of whom has made important advances in the use of microscopy to study materials, have contributed to this cohesive work. The book provides a useful overview of current applications for selected electron microscope techniques that have become important and widespread in their use for furthering our understanding of how materials behave. Linked through the dynamical theory of electron diffraction and inelastic scattering, the topics discussed include the history and impact of electron microscopy in materials science, weak-beam techniques for problem solving, defect structures and dislocation interactions, using beam diffraction patterns to look at defects in structuresTable of ContentsIntroduction (P B Hirsch). Pelagic Publishing Worlds within Worlds: An Introduction to
Book SynopsisA microscope is a gateway to another dimension, allowing us to explore the fascinating realm of microorganisms. From the colonies of green algae that grace the cover of this book, to bacteria, cellular structures and protozoa – an entire world of life, almost limitless and yet invisible to the naked eye, awaits through the lens of a microscope. Until now there has been no book that offers easy access to the exciting and mind-expanding world of microscopy. Practical, compact and accessible, this guide is written especially for beginners. It provides help in learning the correct use of a microscope and the production of preparations. Structured clearly in 25 short chapters, it allows the reader to progress in manageable stages. Each step focuses on a particular theme, introducing the relevant techniques. From illumination to observation, from slide preparation to staining, this book supplies all the building blocks needed for skilled use of microscopes. With this step-by-step approach, the way into the wonderful visual universe of the miniature becomes very simple, even if your first microscope is only a budget model: most of the activities suggested here work using a basic instrument without the more sophisticated accessories. Indeed, the history of microscopy shows that discoveries of great significance have been possible even with rather modest equipment. And this is just as true today. Illustrated throughout with photographs and diagrams, this book is the perfect companion as you discover the richness of microscopic life.Table of ContentsForeword Preface Introduction: Why use a microscope? Springer-Verlag New York Inc. Handbook of Sample Preparation for Scanning Electron Microscopy and Xray Microanalysis
Book SynopsisScanning electr on microscopy (SEM) and x-ray microanalysis can produce magnified images and in situ chemical information from virtually any type of specimen. The two instruments generally operate in a high vacuum and a very dry environment in order to produce the high energy beam of electrons needed for imaging and analysis. With a few notable exceptions, most specimens destined for study in the SEM are poor conductors and composed of beam sensitive light elements containing variable amounts of water. In the SEM, the imaging system depends on the specimen being sufficiently electrically conductive to ensure that the bulk of the incoming electrons go to ground. The formation of the image depends on collecting the different signals that are scattered as a consequence of the high energy beam interacting with the sample. Backscattered electrons and secondary electrons are generated Trade ReviewThis handbook should find its way to the reference bookshelf of all imaging laboratories. It should also become required reading for anyone being trained for SEM work, or anyone who might need to have their samples examined by using such techniques. In that way, it will be less likely that deficient results will be published and that the full potential of the SEM be realized. -- Iolo ap Gwynn, Microscopy and Microanalysis (2010)Table of ContentsSample Collection and Selection.- Sample Preparation Tools.- Sample Support.- Sample Embedding ?and Mounting.- Sample Exposure.- Sample Dehydration.- Sample Stabilization for Imaging in the SEM.- Sample Stabilization to Preserve Chemical Identity.- Sample Cleaning.- Sample Surface Charge Elimination.- Sample Artifacts and Damage.- Additional Sources of Information.

Harvard University Press Life at the Edge of Sight
Book SynopsisThis stunning photographic essay opens a new frontier for readers to explore through words and images. Microbial studies have clarified life’s origins on Earth, explained the functioning of ecosystems, and improved both crop yields and human health. Scott Chimileski and Roberto Kolter are expert guides to an invisible world waiting in plain sight.Trade ReviewFrom the microbial mats at Grand Prismatic Spring in Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park to yeasts, bacteria, and diatoms, the realm of minute life—the foundation of the planetary ecosystem—is ceaselessly compelling. Microbiologists Scott Chimileski and Roberto Kolter explore it by meshing sumptuous images with sharp text. Their swirling narrative segues through deep time; lingers on slime molds, tardigrades (‘water bears’), rotifers and the microbes driving fermentation; and speculates enticingly on extraterrestrial microbiota. -- Barbara Kiser * Nature *This is a most lovely and profound book about microbes. It is a paean to nature, and to the irrepressible curiosity of those who have explored the obscure byways of our world. Both scholars and armchair enthusiasts will enjoy the journey! -- Martin Blaser, author of Missing MicrobesLife at the Edge of Sight offers an inspired journey into microbiology, biodiversity, symbiosis, evolution, and the origin of life, guided by an eminent scientist and an extraordinary photographer. -- Pascale Cossart, Professor and Head of the Bacteria-Cell Interactions Unit, Institut PasteurChimileski and Kolter’s wonderful book tells stories of microbial discovery. It beautifully illustrates the microscopic organisms that have shaped our world. -- Richard Lenski, Hannah Distinguished Professor, Michigan State UniversityThrough stories that are both entertaining and scholarly, this delightful book celebrates the wonders and grand reach of the microbial world. The photography is stunning, and will leave any reader—expert or novice—with a sense of awe. -- Dianne K. Newman, Gordon M. Binder/Amgen Professor of Biology and Geobiology, California Institute of TechnologyThis lavishly illustrated celebration [of microbes] takes in everything from antibiotics, fungi and ‘intelligent slime’ to the rich environment ‘on the kitchen counter,’ while also tracing the stories of the leading scientists who revealed this extraordinary world. Microbes will never be the same again. -- Matthew Reisz * Times Higher Education *[Kolter and Chimileski] offer an appreciation of microorganisms that is both scientific and artistic, and that gives a glimpse of the cellular wonders that are literally underfoot. -- John Rennie and Lucy Reading-Ikkanda * Quanta Magazine *

Oxford University Press ThreeDimensional Electron Microscopy of Macromolecular Assemblies
Book SynopsisCryoelectron microscopy of biological molecules is among the hottest growth areas in biophysics and structural biology at present, and Frank is arguably the most distinguished practitioner of this art. CryoEM is likely over the next few years to take over much of the structural approaches currently requiring X-ray crystallography, because one can now get good and finely detailed images of single molecules down to as little as 200,000 MW, covering a substantial share of the molecules of greatest biomedical research interest. This book, the successor to an earlier work published in 1996 with Academic Press, is a natural companion work to our forthcoming book on electron crystallography by Robert Glaeser, with contributions by six others, including Frank. A growing number of workers will employ CryoEM for structural studies in their own research, and a large proportion of biomedical researchers will have a growing interest in understanding what the capabilities and limits of this approachTable of Contents1: Introduction 2: Electron Microscopy of Macromolecular Assemblies 3: Two-Dimensional Averaging Techniques 4: Multivariate Data Analysis and Classification of Images 5: Three-Dimensional Reconstruction 6: Interpretation of Three-Dimensional Images of Macromolecules Appendix 1: Some Important Definitions and Theorems Appendix 2: Profiles, Point-Spread Functions, and Effects of Commonly Used Low-Pass Filters Appendix 2: Bibliography of Methods Appendix 2: Bibliography of Structures Appendix 2: Special Journal Issues on Image Processing Techniques
