Profile Books Ltd Perfumes: The A-Z Guide
Book Synopsis'I've long wished perfumery to be taken seriously as an art, and for scent critics to be as fierce as opera critics, and for the wearers of certain "fragrances" to be hissed in public, while others are cheered. This year has brought Perfumes: The Guide by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez, which I breathed in, rather than read, in one delighted gulp.' Hilary Mantel, Guardian Perfumes: The Guide is the culmination of Turin's lifelong obsession and rare scientific flair and Sanchez's stylish and devoted blogging about every scent that she's ever loved and loathed. Together they make a fine and utterly persuasive argument for the unrecognised craft of perfume-making. Perfume writing has certainly never been this honest, compelling or downright entertaining.Trade ReviewAs scintillating as it is comprehensive...this pungent, entrancing book is a wake up call for the nostrils. * The Independent *An unexpected classic of criticism -- Philip Hensher * Spectator (Books of the Year) *If you are at all interested in perfume, one of life's greatest sensual pleasures, this is an essential possession -- David Sexton * Evening Standard *This husband-and-wife team has produced a work of perfume criticism that is as gripping as any thriller. -- Jan Moir * Daily Mail *I loved it and bought it for all my friends. I have to say that this is certainly my favourite non-fiction book ever and is very likely my favourite book of all time! If I had to take only one book with me onto a desert island for an indefinite time, it would be this one. * Joanne Harris - author of 'Chocolat' *The perfect gift for the scent addict in your life...witty and informative - and, occasionally, deliciously bitchy. * The Times *Brilliant writing... I shall now spray on my favourite scents in quite a different frame of mind! -- Joanna Trollope * By email *hugely engrossing...the writing is brilliant...gorgeous. * Evening Standard *Lyrical and acerbically witty compendium. * The Times *From riotous one-liners to elaborate reviews, fragrance experts Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez have written an authoritative guide to the best and worst scents. * Daily Express *It's a great book because it brilliantly combines technical knowledge with evocative, poetic and often laugh-out-loud-funny prose to provide incisive, vivid and honest criticism of all perfumes - from the 'staggeringly bad' to the 'deeply divine'. If you want to open your mind to the intricacies of scent - and enjoy a brilliant, entertaining read along the way - I can't recommend it enough. * Elle *consistently entertaining...scathingly inventive bitchiness. * Sunday Business Post *astonishingly brilliant and witty companion to all things fragrant. * Spectator *dazzlingly comprehensive compendium...the writing is the olfactory equivalent of mouthwatering. * Observer *genuinely wonderful...the authors's sense of smell is amazing. * Daily Telegraph *I was fascinated... a description of every perfume known to man, which sounds peculiar, but is mesmeric. -- William Leith * Evening Standard (Books of the year) *a staggeringly complete compilation of perfume reviews...ridiculously entertaining. * Daily Mail *For any fragrance fanatic...an indispensable beauty bible. * Norwich Evening News *Highly entertaining critique which had me both fascinated and laughing out loud in equal measure... addictive and informative. -- Phyl Clarke * Irish Times *It's scents-sational! -- Rochelle Warner * Fabulous.co.uk *A wise investment and an addictive read. -- Gillian Nelis * Sunday Business Post *The authors' evocative and vivid writing style convinces us that perfume isn't a science but an art. David & Charles Essential Buyers Guide Ford Capri
Book SynopsisWhen launched, the Ford Capri was revolutionary. It was a car that set the European market alight, allowing even a buyer on a modest budget an intoxicating whiff of the exotic whilst keeping running costs ataffordable levels. That status eroded over time, and the Capri sat in the classic car doldrums for many years, its true worth unrecognized. That situation has thankfully changed, and Capri values are rising rapidly, so care has to be taken to make sure you end up with the best one possible for your money. This guide takes the potential purchaser through a short initial examination to weed out the obviously defective followed by a more comprehensive step by step look at the body and mechanical parts, where the clear, jargon-free text accompanied by over 100 photographs sheds light on even the darkest corners of the Capri’s construction. A unique points marking system ensures that nothing is overlooked, and an accurate final picture of the car’s condition can be viewed in relation to the asking price.Table of Contents1 - Is it the car for you? 2 - Cost considerations 3 - Living with a Ford Capri 4 - Relative values 5 - Before you view 6 - 15min evaluation 7 - Key points 8 - Serious evaluation 9 - Auctions 10 - Paperwork 11 - What's it worth to you? 12 - Do you really want to restore? 13 - Paint faults 14 - Lack of use problems 15 - The community 16 - Vital statistics

With accompanying colour photos this is the complete guide to choosing, assessing and buying the original BMW Z4.Trade ReviewWritten by David Smithery, who is doing a great job running the Z4 Register at the moment. With his knowledge gained because of his motorsport activities, he seemed a perfect candidate to produce a book on the buying of a Z4. The book itself is well written and very informative, and covers all Z4 models Roadster and Coupes produced between 2003 and 2009, including the 'M' and Alpina models. It starts off giving a brief history of the Z4 with a few facts and figures. The the following chapters start off by asking if the Z4 is the right car for you to own, giving you some of the pros and cons of owning a Z4 car. So who would buy this book? Anyone who is in the process of buying or even thinking about buying a Z4; it will give you great information, and will give you all of the points to look out for when you see a car that you think may be a good purchase. If you are in the market for a Z4 there is los of advice and tips to help with your purchase. Would recommend. - Straight Six Magazine. One of the newest cars to receive Veloce's guide's, the Z4 isn't old enough to have suffered significant corrosion, so the typical guide to common rust spots isn't applicable here. Nonetheless, there's still plenty in this book, not only in things to look out for, but also in the myriad options and variants that BMW graced the Z4 with. A must for the prospective Z4 buyer, particularly those not sure of exactly which Z4 they want, taking you from passing admirer to model expert. be warned: you'll definitely end up wanting a Z4M. - Classic Car Weekly. I believe the content is accurate and a good reflection of owning and driving the marque. Its a very informative guide to anyone thinking of buying a Z4. I liked the mixture of photographs presented, the tips for buying and owning, the little quirks that were discussed (like the poor design of roof motor and how to fix it), and also the statistics at the end of the book. I believe this is a must for anyone seriously thinking of owning a Z4. - www.z4-forum.com. One of the latest additions to the always-useful Essential Buyers Guide series of books is a BMW Z4 edition, written by David Smitherham. David & Charles Lotus Elan: S1, S2, S3, S4 & Sprint 1962 to 1973
Book SynopsisThe Essential Guide to buying the Lotus Elan of your dreams, this book will guide you through all you need to know. The Lotus Elan and Plus 2 are the definitive classic Lotus Sports cars. Small, light, and powered by Lotus's own Twin Cam engine, these were and are fast, great handling sports cars with a Grand Prix winning pedigree. With a winning formula of glass fibre bodyshell, and simple sheet steel backbone chassis, the Elan was an affordable replacement for the expensive and exotic glass fibre monocoque Lotus Elite, and became the mainstay of the Lotus road car range throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s. First introduced as an open two-seater in 1962, and as a Coupe in 1966, the Elan was available as a do-it-yourself `kit' car or in factory assembled form, and was refined through the 1960s, culminating in the famous Sprint models of 1971, with the big valve 130bhp Twin Cam engine. The widened and stretched 2+2 Elan with its vestigial rear seats - named, unsurprisingly, the Plus 2 - was introduced in 1967, followed by the higher-spec Plus 2S in 1969, which was the first Elan not available in kit form. The Plus 2S 130 gained the Sprint specification engine in 1971, and the final Elan was the Plus 2S 130/5 of 1972. Just over 9000 Elans were produced between 1962 and 1973, while just over 5000 Plus 2 were produced between 1967 and 1974. This book has been written to provide the prospective owner with all the information they need to establish if an Elan or Plus 2 is for them, and what to look for when viewing an example. All aspects of the cars are examined, including paperwork, mechanical issues, bodywork and interior with many photos of example cars to assist in the assessment of an individual car, and understand the implications of many of the common problems that a car can exhibit. The author is a Lotus enthusiast, and has been working on and writing about classic Lotuses for a number of years.Trade ReviewI think this book is excellent and good value. The photographs are informative and well reproduced. - Historic Lotus Register. Penguin Books Ltd Brandsplaining Why Marketing Is Still Sexist and
Book Synopsis''It''s high time we expose and remedy the pseudo-feminist marketing malarkey holding women back under the guise of empowerment'' Amanda Montell, author of Wordslut________________Brands profit by telling women who they are and how to be. Now they''ve discovered feminism and are hell bent on selling ''fempowerment'' back to us. But behind the go-girl slogans and the viral hash-tags has anything really changed? In Brandsplaining, Jane Cunningham and Philippa Roberts expose the monumental gap that exists between the women that appear in the media around us and the women we really are. Their research reveals how our experiences, wants and needs - in all forms - are ignored and misrepresented by an industry that fails to understand us.They propose a radical solution to resolve this once and for all: an innovative framework for marketing that is fresh, exciting, and - at last - sexism-free.________________Trade ReviewA brilliant book -- witty and wise. A fast-track primer to gender bilingual marketing: the skill of being able to connect with 100% of your potential market and avoid the lazy, systemic default of outdated and ineffective brandsplaining -- Avivah Wittenberg-Cox, CEO of 20-firstAn outrageously important book. Erudite, funny, and deeply engaging -- with no condescension or bullshit -- Brandsplaining sets out why the male monologue continues to monopolize, and what to do about it -- Dr Aarathi Prasad, author of Like A Virgin: how science is redesigning the rules of sexFilled with fascinating and funny insights, Brandsplaining is not just about marketing but also about how gender identities can be (and are) shaped and mis-shaped, branded and rebranded. If you think we've moved on from 'Good Girl' to 'Go Girl', think again! This is great food for thought in any debates about the path to gender irrelevance - or even gender neutrality -- Professor Gina Rippon, author of The Gendered BrainWhat an important piece of research, and what an interesting read! This book has the power to change the way that people see everything -- Sophie Devonshire, CEO of The Marketing SocietyOn our way to dethroning patriarchy's hold on capitalism, books like this are critical. It's high time we expose and remedy the pseudo-feminist marketing malarkey holding women back under the guise of empowerment - and Brandsplaining is here to help us do just that -- Amanda Montell, author of WordslutWith the male-dominated marketing monologue in the dock, this is a compelling and forensically constructed case for the prosecution.
