HarperCollins Publishers Paranoia
Book Synopsis''A TRULY IMPORTANT BOOK' JOHN HUMPHRYS''FASCINATING SHOCKING'' SPECTATORWhat is paranoia? What makes us mistrustful? How can this be overcome?Daniel Freeman, Professor of Psychology at Oxford, has spent thirty years at the vanguard of paranoia research and treatment. This remarkable and moving book tells the story of that journey. For decades, conventional wisdom held that paranoia was only experienced by people with severe mental health problems and little could be done to rectify its disastrous effects. Paranoia gives us a front row seat as Freeman turns the traditional view on its head.He develops life-changing treatments for clinical paranoia often using state-of-the-art technology like virtual reality. He reveals that suspicion is rife in society, with paranoia widespread, conspiracy theories rampant and emotion all too often trumping evidence. He discovers the causes of mistrust, including the role of genes, trauma, lack of sleep, worry, low self-confidence, cannabis use and hearing voices, and delves into the murky world of Covid-19 conspiracy theories. Lighting up the narrative throughout are the rarely heard voices of people whose lives have been almost wrecked by paranoia and then in many cases transformed by Freeman's groundbreaking treatments. This is also a practical book. Freeman shows how we can measure our own levels of mistrust. He explains how we can remedy things if those levels are higher than we'd like, because although mistrust can seem engrained, things can change for the better. Ultimately, it can be overcome. Compelling and compassionate, this is a gripping tale from the front line of suspicion an impassioned plea for the urgent rebuilding of trust between us all.Trade Review'Paranoia reads rather like early Oliver Sacks… Freeman does a lot of citing of his own case studies and surveys, which are fascinating; offers a little bit of the history of the treatment of certain kinds of mental illness, which is shocking; and reveals how and why the Covid-19 pandemic has proved to be absolutely devastating to our sense of trust, which is highly disturbing' Spectator 'Anyone who’s been a hack as long as me (sixty-five years and counting) reckons we can spot paranoia when we see it. But we need Daniel Freeman to tell us how to recognise the real thing. He doesn’t only write from experience. He knows how to deal with it. A truly important book’ JOHN HUMPHRYS ‘Daniel Freeman’s remarkable new book offers a front row seat for his groundbreaking research and recounts a compelling, and endearingly personal, account of supporting those affected by the experience of extreme mistrust. It is a superb achievement: intimate yet expansive, and a true testament to the transformational power of empathy and understanding in the face of fear’ DR ELEANOR LONGDEN, UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER ‘An eye-opening exploration of mistrust from the leading psychologist of paranoia. Daniel Freeman provides a compelling account of paranoia, conspiracy thinking and the crisis of trust now corroding our societies. His superb new book is authoritative and illuminating’ PROFESSOR KIA NOBRE FBA, YALE UNIVERSITY ‘This book busts many assumptions about the nature of psychiatric disease and psychological distress, and their relationship to all of us. A fascinating journey through the scientific method to understand new ways of conceptualising our mental health, and techniques to improve it’ PROFESSOR GUY LESCHZINER, GUY’S AND ST THOMAS’ HOSPITALS

McFarland and Company, Inc. Growing Up with a Schizophrenic Mother
Book Synopsis An estimated two to three million people in the United States today were raised by a schizophrenic parent. Brown and Roberts offer a unique book based on interviews with over forty adult children of mothers diagnosed as schizophrenic. Such topics as the isolation their family felt, their chaotic home environments, their present relationships with their mothers, and the lost potential of mother and child are covered. Their stories are fascinating and provide important information to both the mental health community and the lay public. The offspring have been described as having higher rates of increased aggressivity and sibling conflict, but often their circumstances strengthened these children and contributed to artistic and creative talents, resiliency, and high achievements. The authors provide an overview of schizophrenia, behaviors of the affected parent, and the marital relationship of the patient and her non-schizophrenic spouse. As adults, the respondents now shar

A fascinating guide to why we get sick and how we get better. The human body is a marvel - but what happens when it comes under attack? A fascinating guide to why we get sick and how we get better. ‘Lovely, warm, erudite and, above all, chatty.’ Chris van Tulleken, author of Ultra Processed People Nature wants you dead. Not just you, but your children and everyone you have ever met and everyone they have ever met; in fact, everyone. It wants you to cough and sneeze and poop yourself into an early grave. It wants your blood vessels to burst and pustules to explode all over your body. And - until recently - it was really good at doing this… The subject of infection and how to fight it grows more urgent every day. How do pathogens cause disease? And what tools can we give our bodies to do battle? Infectious is not onlyTrade Review‘Tregoning is a gifted writer of popular science. He has a knack for explaining the intricacies of vaccines and immunity without dumbing them down, and he moves things briskly along with a barrage of often self-deprecating humor.’ * Wall Street Journal *‘This book catapults us to the frontier of the vital science of infections and immune responses. Tregoning is a perfect guide, writing with wit and intelligence about a subject that surely everyone feels the importance of now. Brilliant and right on the zeitgeist.’ -- Daniel M. Davis, author of The Beautiful Cure‘Packed with fascinating facts, intriguing anecdotes and more than a few Dad jokes, Infectious is an expertly guided, pacey tour through the world of all the stuff that’s trying to kill us and how our immune systems and human ingenuity are fighting back.’ -- Dr Kat Arney, science communicator and author of Rebel Cell‘What a book! A book for everyone, an expert, or an interested lay person, young or retired or somewhere in the middle. Informed, engaging, generous and superbly written. If you have secretly wondered about some of the information of the last year (as we all have) and want one book to explain it all with total clarity – this is the book for you. I started it and could not put it down. The best, most accessible, high-quality science book I have read this year. Utterly brilliant.’ -- Jeremy Farrar, Director of the Wellcome Trust‘To call this book timely would be yet another contender for understatement of this strange decade. As the pandemic has upended the world and ravaged the population, it’s a duty for all of us civilians to turn to experts like Dr Tregoning with due humility, and educate ourselves about what’s happening to us, how we got here, how we’ve dealt with similar events in the past, and how we might get through this. This book is thorough, engaging, entertaining and utterly vital.’ -- Frank Turner, singer-songwriter‘Lovely, warm, erudite and, above all, chatty.’ -- Chris van Tulleken‘Despite the serious subject, Tregoning (who got COVID-19) maintains a sense of humor… This is a fascinating and timely account of often unheralded scientists heroically battling bacteria and viruses.’ * Booklist *

Oxford University Press Stem Cells
Book SynopsisThe topic of stem cells has a high profile in the media. We''ve made important advances in our scientific understanding, but despite this the clinical applications of stem cells are still in their infancy and most real stem cell therapy carried out today is some form of bone marrow transplantation. At the same time, a scandalous spread of unproven stem cell treatments by private clinics represents a serious problem, with treatments being offered which are backed by limited scientific rationale, and which are at best ineffective, and at worse harmful. This Very Short Introduction introduces stem cells, exploring what they are, and what scientists do with them. Introducing the different types of stem cells, Jonathan Slack explains how they can be used to treat diseases such as retinal degeneration, diabetes, Parkinson''s disease, heart disease, and spinal trauma. He also discusses the important technique of bone marrow transplantation and some other types of current stem cell therapy, used for the treatment of blindness and of severe burns. Slack warns against fake stem cell treatments and discusses how to distinguish real from fake treatments. He also describes the latest scientific progress in the field, and looks forward to what we can expect to happen in the next few yearsVery Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. HarperCollins Publishers Paranoia
Book Synopsis''A TRULY IMPORTANT BOOK' JOHN HUMPHRYS''FASCINATING SHOCKING'' SPECTATORWhat is paranoia? What makes us anxious? He discovers the causes of mistrust, including the role of genes, trauma, lack of sleep, worry, low self-confidence, cannabis use and hearingTrade Review'Paranoia reads rather like early Oliver Sacks… Freeman does a lot of citing of his own case studies and surveys, which are fascinating; offers a little bit of the history of the treatment of certain kinds of mental illness, which is shocking; and reveals how and why the Covid-19 pandemic has proved to be absolutely devastating to our sense of trust, which is highly disturbing' Spectator 'Anyone who’s been a hack as long as me (sixty-five years and counting) reckons we can spot paranoia when we see it.

Oxford University Press AIDS Doctors
Book SynopsisToday, AIDS has been indelibly etched in our consciousness. Yet it was less than twenty years ago that doctors confronted a sudden avalanche of strange, inexplicable, seemingly untreatable conditions that signaled the arrival of a devastating new disease. Bewildered, unprepared, and pushed to the limit of their diagnostic abilities, a select group of courageous physicians nevertheless persevered. This unique collective memoir tells their story. Based on interviews with nearly eighty doctors whose lives and careers have centered on the AIDS epidemic from the early 1980s to the present, this candid, emotionally textured account details the palpable anxiety in the medical profession as it experienced a rapid succession of cases for which there was no clinical history. The physicians interviewed chronicle the roller coaster experiences of hope and despair, as they applied newly developed, often unsuccessful therapies. Yet these physicians who chose to embrace the challenge confronted moreTrade ReviewA detailed oral history of the first decades of the AIDS epidemic, told from the vantage point of the treating physician...A cold and revealing history of an American archetype, sure to appeal to readers whose lives have been affected by AIDS. * Kirkus Reviews *AIDS, the most dreaded plague of our epoch, has found its heroes. In this stunning document, doctors, unsung and uncelebrated, are meeting this challenge. Bayer and Oppenheimer, two masterful interviewers, have sounded, in the words of these heroes, a note of hope and possible triumph. * Studs Turkel *AIDS Doctors is a captivating story that reads like a medical thriller. To hear the story from the point of view of those on the front line and to witness their anxieties and their transformation is truly unique. This book will not only be an important chronicle of the history of AIDS in this country, it will hopefully serve as inspiration for young people contemplating a career in medicine. * Abraham Verghese, author of My Own Country and The Tennis Partner *In the great tradition of Studs Terkel, Bayer and Oppenheimer offer us the opportunity to hear the determined voices of clinicians who stepped forward to care for those stricken with AIDS in the terrifying early years of the epidemic. The eloquence of these men and women, their courage and compassion, is a powerful reminder that in the midst of tragedy we sometimes find our humanity. This extraordinary book will constitute a critical document and guide as we construct a history of this ongoing and devastating epidemic. * Allan Brandt, Harvard University, author of No Magic Bullet: A Social History of Venereal Disease in the United States since 1880 *Aids Doctors walks us through the American epidemic with grace, drama and a mastery of the social history of a profoundly important event. It deserves to sit on the bookshelf alongside earlier classics of the epidemic, Randy Shilts's And the Band Played On, Abraham Verghese's My Own Country and Abigail Zuger's Strong Shadows. * The New York Times Book Review *A sweeping narrative of the AIDS epidemic chronicles the terrifying early years to the current climate of therapeutic optimism, weaving together the intensely personal stories of the doctors who first confronted the crisis. * Forecast *This book tells the moving story of doctors who have committed their professional and often their personal lives to the AIDS epidemic. The book should enjoy a general readership, sicne the lay public can relate to the human stories that detail the failings and triumphs of the health care system in relation to AIDS. The book is more than informative and moving * it is a testament to the devotion of physicians to the sick.Marla Gold, New England Journal of Medicine, Vol 344, No. 4, Jan 25, 2001 *The intimate revelations published in AIDS Doctors will resonate with many AIDS physicians. This book provides a blow-by-blow account of the bewilderment and shock felt by physicians who first encountered an unknown killer of young gay men. This book provides for both medical and lay readers an intimate glimpse into the dramatic struggles of the relatively few physicians who first confronted an epidemic of catastrophic proportions. It stands as a testament to the lives of physicians "gripped" by the AIDS epidemic. * Philip B. Berger, Canadian Medical Association Journal, 163(11), Nov 28, 2000 *

Oxford University Press Inc Stuck How Vaccine Rumors Startand Why They Dont
Book SynopsisStuck examines how the issues surrounding vaccine hesitancy are, more than anything, about people feeling left out of the conversation. It provides a clear-eyed examination of the social vectors that transmit vaccine rumors, their manifestations around the globe, and how these individual threads are all connected.Trade ReviewIn Stuck, anthropologist Heidi Larson explains why debunking vaccine misinformation with logic, reason, and scientific facts are not nearly enough. By viewing vaccine refusal as a cultural movement, Larson explains how it is only through understanding the root causes of false beliefs about vaccines that we can begin to change them. A compelling guide on how to treat the disease and not the symptoms. * Paul A. Offit, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia *Vaccine hesitancy has emerged as a major 21st-century public health threat, resulting in declines in vaccine coverage and the return of serious or even deadly infections such as measles or pertussis. Now more than ever we have to be concerned about the impact of misinformation and rumors on the acceptance of new vaccines for these conditions. Heidi Larson's book provides important insights to help us navigate these difficulties. * Peter Hotez, MD, PhD, Professor of Pediatrics and Dean, National School of Tropical Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine *Heidi Larson's excellent new book looks at why vaccine rumors cannot simply be put to rest with more evidence and debunking. As she compellingly argues, emotions and sentiments take on lives of their own, spreading between sympathetic individuals and propagating. Fear, mistrust, and anger all play key roles in vaccine denialism, and to ignore these factors is to badly misdiagnose why people do not vaccinate. To change the denier, Larson argues, one must change the ecosystem of doubt and mistrust they live in. * Cailin O'Connor, Associate Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science, University of California, Irvine *

Oxford University Press Inc Low Back Pain
Book SynopsisLow back pain affects almost everyone at some point, and many people struggle with pain or limitations despite multiple attempts at treatment. Current spine care is plagued by variability, over-medicalization of biopsychosocial problems, inequity, and an over-emphasis on interventional and surgical care. Guidelines focused on the short-term management of acute low back pain are generally not followed and have limited applicability. Non-specific and poorly verified diagnoses further confound clinical care. The reality is that low back pain is a chronic recurrent problem for most individuals, and care should therefore be directed toward long-term management and optimization of life and function.Low Back Pain recognizes that all low back pain conditions are not created equally and focuses on effective treatments for a diverse set of low back pain issues. Part of the What Do I Do Now?: Pain Medicine series this text provides concise, evidence-based, and practical guidance on the management of back pain and related spinal disorders. With practical information on effective front-line care for those with low back pain, the cases in this book reflect common or illustrative clinical presentations and a solid framework for evaluating those with low back pain, clarity on specific conditions, and a critical approach to diagnosis and treatment.

Columbia University Press Race in a Bottle
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewJonathan Kahn's approach offers an airtight analysis of the commoditization of race in pharmaceutical development, and Race in a Bottle should be of interest and deep concern to numerous audiences. -- Ruha Benjamin, Boston University Jonathan Kahn has produced a major and unique contribution, giving readers a 'big picture' understanding of this vital issue by integrating empirically grounded analysis of real controversies into a detailed conceptual roadmap. This is a substantial piece of scholarship and will be of interest to anyone concerned with the escalating, even geometrically expanding use of the concept of race in science and medicine. -- Troy Duster, University of California, Berkeley Jonathan Kahn is the undisputed Hercules Poirot of biomedicine. His unraveling of the nonsense, non-science, and complicated illogic that allowed the vasodilator BiDil to be approved by the FDA exclusively for 'black' patients is as compelling a read as any good mystery. This riveting book details what happens to scientific method when profit motive drives the marketing of a drug to the extent that its curative properties are touted as race-specific-even when they're not. Genetic variation in humans has no correlation to the shifting historical meanings of race, yet pharmaceutical companies continue to force the square peg of social category into the round hole of scientific fact. Race in a Bottle is a brilliant deconstruction of the kinds of thought processes that make for bad policy, bad medicine, and ultimately endanger our health as a species. -- Patricia Williams, Columbia Law School Jonathan Kahn brilliantly exposes the stunning truth behind new race-based medicines: they are driven by market incentives, not scientific evidence. Based on meticulous research and astute analysis, Kahn constructs a gripping, devastating portrait of profit motivating the use of race in genetic research and pharmaceuticals. Race in a Bottle is absolutely essential for understanding why the myth of biological race has reemerged in genomic science and biotechnology and how it is distorting research, damaging pubic health, and undermining justice in our supposedly post-racial society. -- Dorothy Roberts, author of Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-first Century Kahn expertly weaves together the legal and ethical ramifications of continuing to pursue racialized drugs... No background in health sciences or genetics is necessary to understand this work. Library Journal [Race in a Bottle] tackle[s] one of the most important concerns pertaining to race facing our society today... Must-read material. New Scientist An extraordinary book... I highly recommend it. -- Osagie Obasogie BioPolitical Times Mr. Kahn deserves credit for teasing out all the daunting complexities behind these events, including the details of genetic analysis, the perils of racial determinations, and the minutiae of patent law. -- Abigail Zuger, M.D. New York Times Kahn's book should be required reading. At a time when the ties between scientific researchers and the pharmaceutical industry are becoming ever more entangled, Race in a Bottle provides valuable insights into the consequences of these connections for health and health care - and, importantly, for what passes as knowledge. -- Lundy Braun GeneWatch A powerful saga packed with engrossing twists and turns of plot and filled with food for thought and debate on the politics and health implications of racial perception. Midwest Book Review Finely crafted and written. -- Alejandra Suarez PsycCritiques [Kahn] seems as much at home discussing epidemiology and drug marketing as he does the history of US race relations and the intricacies of patenting... Magnificent. -- Dr. Martyn Pickersgill The Biologist A compelling account of a fascinating case. -- Anne Pollock Bulletin of the History of Medicine Race in a Bottle is lucid and energetic, with fascinating and little-known evidence about clinical trials, the federal regulatory and patent systems, and the history of racial classification... Kahn offers a heartfelt and persuasive case against allowing race to be reduced to biology. -- Jennifer L. Hochschild Journal of American History [Kahn] skillfully uses the story of the drug BiDil... as the backdrop for examining the expanding role of race in medical genomics, even when the same science has called the existence of race into serious doubt. -- Aravinda Chakravarti Nature Medicine Highly recommended. Choice [Jonathan Kahn's] rich portrayal of the changing meaning and uses of race in the wake of genomics makes this book a 'must read' and 'must assign' for all sociologists of race and ethnicity.
