Hoaki New Jewellery Techniques: Curved Scoring and
Book SynopsisA detailed and abundantly-illustrated reference that focuses on the innovative curved score folding for sheet metal techniques to create beautiful, dynamic three-dimensional forms, much like metal origami, in jewellery and metalsmithing. Anastasia Young and Paul Wells, both renowned London-based jewellers, authors and lecturers, have created a practical visual handbook on curved scoring and folding techniques applied to jewellery and metalsmithing for small objects. The book's clear, hands-on approach, with explanatory photographs for each step, makes it an invaluable resource for established jewellers wishing to learn more about new techniques, jewellery students, home crafters and advanced amateurs. Readers will discover a variety of ways to score and fold metal and give it different finishes, shaping flat sheets into to visually stunningly organic forms, including guides on the tools needed for each method. A final section contains useful resources, from a detailed analysis of score depth based on the gauge of the wire used (through diagrams to aid design and planning) to information about where to source materials and facts about metalworking and jewellery in general. AUTHORS: Anastasia Young is a London-based jewellery artist, author and lecturer whose work has been exhibited internationally. Young's eclectic jewellery is often project-based and driven by a combination of ideas and technical investigation; she uses narrative to explore both the design of a piece and its display when not being worn. Examples of her work are held in the permanent collections of the Science Museum, London and Central Saint Martins Museum. Young is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins, where she lectures and teaches short courses in jewellery making. Having written three technical jewellery books (Thames & Hudson, A&C Black) which have been translated into seven languages, Young is well known as an educator and through her teaching and writing. In 2017, Anastasia was appointed to the board of the Association for Contemporary Jewellery, and is also the Technical Features Editor of its biannual magazine, Findings. Paul Wells is an award-winning London based silversmith and jeweler, renowned for his use of direct metalworking techniques. Wells' silverware makes innovative use of fold-forming and he has developed a method of creating curved scores which can be used to fold sheet metal in a visually stunning and unique style. His technique has been recognised by Goldsmiths' Crafts and Design Council with two Gold Awards for Technological Innovation. Wells' exploration of this technique has led to the production of intrinsically organic silver forms which almost appear to have grown themselves into existence, creating confounding biomorphic designs that are both functional and decorative. Having taught at several London colleges for two decades, Paul Wells is a respected educator and keen advocate of fold-forming, and has contributed to many books published by Quarto, Thames & Hudson and A&C Black. SELLING POINTS: . An essential, easy-to-understand reference for anyone who wants to perfect his or her metalworking techniques, full of photographs to illustrate every step of the way . The only book on the market that demonstrates the curved scoring technique . Filled with practical resources such as tips, advice on tools, diagrams, and a glossary of commonly-used industry terms . The book is highly illustrated with very clear photographs and the writing style is concise and informative - overall a very useful book for any jewellery maker to have in their library. The book is unusual in that it covers both beading and metalworking. Most books on these subjects stick to one or the other because the tools and techniques are so different. But those who enjoy making bead jewellery often want to move on into metalworking of various kinds so this book covers that transition neatly. The two authors are each specialists in their own type of jewellery making - Sara Withers in beading and Xuella Arnold in metalworking - so each subject is covered by and expert in the field. In all, this is a beautifully written and illustrated book and really does manage to cover a huge range of techniques that will be enjoyed by many. CHAPTER ONE /HOT CONNECTIONS : HOW JEWELLERS USE SOLDER (12 pp) A gallery of inspirational work by leading jewelers, showing the use of solder in a range of constructions. In each example, the solder joins are "called out" using a graphic device to truly reveal how pieces are constructed. CHAPTER TWO / EQUIPMENT (6pp) Basic Soldering Equipment and Tools: The Essentials • Soldering torches: mouth, gas, gas and air, acetylene, and micro welder • Revolving soldering turntable • Fire bricks/heat proof blocks and boards: charcoal block, soldering block, pumice block, honeycomb ceramic board, and firebrick board • Soldering jigs and wigs: wire nest, ring ceramic holder, third hand base, and soldering pins and clips • Tweezers: reverse action, straight and curved, stainless steel, brass, and plastic • Soldering probe: for the directing and moving of solder • Small brush: the advantages of using a slightly finer, more expensive brush • Snipes for cutting solder pallions • Selection of small and fine files • Varying degrees of solder hardness: stripe, wire, pallions, and pre-mixed solder paste • Types of solder: silver, gold, platinum, and palladium solders • Flux: traditional borax cone and dish, premixed syringe flux, flux powder, and borax powder • Pickle • Cleaning equipment: metal or plastic wire brush, emery paper, emery sticks, and water of air stone CHAPTER THREE /HEALTH AND SAFETY (2pp) • Heat proof equipment and materials, and how to use them • Essential fire safety equipment: extinguisher and blanket • Storing your torch safely when not in use • Safety position of gas canister and lighters • Suitable clothing to prevent fire risk • Using tweezers and prolongs: safely moving solder and transferring hot parts to and from the soldering area • Hair safety • Protective eye wear • First aid equipment and burns medicine • Lighting: how to set up the optimum lighting conditions for soldering CHAPTER FOUR / INTRODUCTION TO SOLDERING ( 6pp ) This section covers the fundamental aspects of soldering and key issues that need to be considered before you start, from setting up the best working environment to understanding how solder works. Before soldering Think about the construction of your final piece: if you know the number of parts and solder joins you will need, then you already have the basic guide to the soldering stages of your project. You can then number solder joins, and ultimately understand which solder to apply when, and why. Lighting Though direct overhead lighting is best while preparing parts for soldering, a slightly darker environment for the actual soldering itself is recommended: a low, dim light provides the optimum conditions for looking at metal color and torch flame. Preparing parts and joins Mind the gap: solder flows along joins and will not connect gaps. Always make sure that the pieces to be joined sit snugly together—joins should be touching securely to allow the solder to flow in perfect channels, making for strong and successful soldering. When soldering tubing or metal parts that are prone to relaxation or changes in size when heated, you can avoid excess metal movement during the soldering process by annealing first. Handling of parts To get the perfect finish, joins have to be emeried, cleaned, and placed in pickle and water before soldering. Avoid touching the parts with your hands, as any oil residue from your skin will prevent the solder flowing efficiently. Positioning the pieces Air needs to circulate freely around the parts being soldered, so place them on stilts or other props. This will also make the pieces more accessible, both visually and physically—raising up your piece on fire bricks or a revolving turntable, for example, will help you position yourself comfortably at your work. Good posture and steady hands are vital when soldering, so maximize your hand control by using your work surface for support. Understanding solder With solder, understanding how conditions and technique can cause the solder to react will improve the results you can get from it. Always remember that solder flows toward the heat, so directing the flame evenly around the join area will keep the solder flowing consistently. Fluxes There are various types of flux, and choosing the right one for the particular soldering task will give you the most favorable soldering surface and conditions to work in. Blow torch Understand which type of heat and flame to apply, and when to withdraw it. When using different torches other techniques and rules have to be applied. For example, a micro welder’s flame should be aimed precisely at the join for successful soldering. Post-soldering The processes you carry out after soldering depend on the finish you want and the type of solder join, but typical post-soldering steps include quenching in water and pickle, to anneal the piece and remove excess solder and flux marks. Knowing which technique to use is key: quenching can damage certain parts, particularly flat forms, so understanding the effects of different quenching temperatures can make or break a project. Cleaning: fixing mistakes Making mistakes is all part of the learning process, and soldering is no exception. Learn how to clean and disengage incorrectly soldered parts, and you will be able to start afresh but still use the pieces you have prepared. Cleaning: after successful soldering When everything has been done correctly, cleaning the soldered parts should be fairly simple and only require emery paper and sticks. CHAPTER FIVE/ TECHNIQUES ( 54pp ) • Sweat soldering • Butt soldering • Soldering jump rings: preparing the join • Soldering tubing: creating a tight fitting join before you solder • Multi-solder joins with varying solders • Using stitches to hold parts in position for soldering • Soldering surfaces and positioning tools/jigs for different pieces • How to hold small and difficult parts for soldering: using binding wire and making secure clips • Soldering different metals: silver, gold, platinum, and palladium • Solder inhibitors: keeping solder from running into unwanted areas • Stick feed soldering for bigger parts • Soldering onto a textured or patterned surface (stone setting on textured background) • Granulation, reticulation, and fusing • Stone work: how to solder near stones (and other non-metal materials), and how to protect them during repairs • Soldering of more complex metals such as platinum and palladium • Use of PUK or laser soldering • Quenching, cooling, and pickling, and which metals require quenching • Cleaning your work after soldering • Removing fire-stains • Plating or colouring metal after soldering CHAPTER SIX / PROJECTS ( 60pp ) RING Soldering and preparation: applying parts before shaping and forming STONE SETTING ON A RING Soldering a rub-over setting PENDANT • Flat-to-flat soldering: applying slightly formed parts to a flat surface, • Forming sections on the domed area before soldering (using pre-mixed solder) Page 5 Copyright c 2012 Quarto Publishing plc EARRINGS • Soldering various metals: gold to silver • How to solder earring fittings FILIGREE PENDANT • Multi-solder joins, using solders of varying hardness • Filigree: How to create and solder BANGLE Lengthy solder joins: bangle project with round and square wire twisted together, and soldered before forming SPHERE CUFFLINKS Soldering a closed vacuum area; how to create hidden air holes OPEN BEZEL LOCKET PENDANT • Soldering and fitting a bezel • Using stitches to hold the bezel in position for soldering EARRING/CAST PARTS • Soldering parts to cast items or pieces made from precious metal clay • How to burnish cast items to seal the porosity so that solder does not bleed onto them OPEN BANGLE Soldering of hinges; involves tube soldering and solder inhibitors NECKLACE • Soldering a chain • Probe soldering • Soldering a bezel BROOCH WITH MOVING PARTS • Soldering an item which requires movement • Soldering a brooch finding PENDANT/NECKLACE Soldering inlaid patterns BUSINESS CARD HOLDER • Soldering larger pieces • Sweat soldering: how to secure pieces with binding wire and other equipment RING Soldering platinum and palladium ESSENTIAL INFORMATION (4pp) • Melting temperatures: solder types • Melting temperatures: metal types • Metal annealing temperatures: which metals are safe and should be quenched after soldering REFERENCES, INDEX, AND CREDITS (7pp)

This colourful and informative beginner's guide to the craft explains how to use a circular kumihimo disc and a variety of braids and beads to create 12 stunning pieces of jewellery, plus colour and style variations, for any occasion. Kumihimo is a transportable craft so once you have mastered the basics of placing your braids over the disc in different formations to make a variety of patterns and motifs, you can create kumihimo jewellery wherever you go.Trade ReviewA nice introduction to Kumihimo, the book includes information on materials, tools and essential techniques. All of the projects are well explained and each is accompanied by bright, well photographed, pictures and colour diagrams. Donna includes lots of tip boxes throughout the book. All in all a great introduction to Kumihimo. * Bead Society of Great Britain, Journal 130 (Spring/Summer 2019) *Even at first glance the book is filled with clear, colourful and informative images printed on good quality, glossy paper which offers the reader a seemingly more expensive book than the RRP would suggest. The initial section on materials and essential techniques is detailed and concise, and offers both written and step-by-step picture instructions. There are clear directions to get you started on a two-coloured, eight-braid bracelet with a further eleven projects, plus braiding idea options. The book offers exactly what the title suggests. It is good value for money, the quality of printing and construction exceeds its price tag and I would buy this book as a beginner's reference guide or as a gift for a crafting friend. -- Kik Knott, Diss & District * The Journal for Weavers, Spinners & Dyers (March 2019) *This stunning art of braiding to make wonderful pieces of jewellery is simple and unique. You will learn basic techniques to braid and bead, which will give a beautiful finished piece of jewellery that will be wearable and stylish. To make the projects you will need a Kumihimo disc or plate, I would have liked to have seen one included with this book, but you can pick them up for a couple of pounds quite easily, and you will need some cord. The instructions are easy to follow and what I liked is that picture demonstration is included along with special hints and tips to give your work that professional finish. Each piece is stunning, the beadwork is amazing and for a 'Magpie' like me I was drawn to the shiny and sparkle of the embellishments. This is a book perfect for beginners, it really is a one to one craft class. 12 projects are showcased and each one is gorgeous and appealing. -- Tracy Shephard * Postcard Reviews *This wonderful Kumihimo beginner's guide (or, to give the book it’s proper title:’ A Beginner’s Guide to Kumihimo’) is by Donna McKean Smith. Published by Search Press, it will come as no surprise for me to tell you that the book is beautifully laid out and illustrated. If you’re someone who enjoys making beaded ropes, then I’m going to tell you why you need this. As the cover advertises, this Kumihimo beginner's guide gives you 12 projects to get you started. It also gives you a wealth of information about the tools and materials you need. Plus, in learning these projects, you are learning general Kumihimo techniques. So, you’ll end up with the skill set to go on and make loads more Kumihimo projects all on your own. In case you’re wondering, Kumihimo is actually an ancient Japanese craft. It is basically braiding. You will get to learn a number of different braid combinations. Each creates a different texture and look. You will start by learning how to braid with ribbon. Then, learn how to add in beads. Both these looks are beautiful. The projects in the book will give you necklaces and bracelets. If you want to try your own thing, then Kumihimo ropes also make fabulous necklaces for hanging a special pendant or cabochon. Donna McKean Smith has been running Riverside crafts for many years. She is an expert teacher and this comes across in the book. She guides you through everything from a beginner’s perspective. So, you don’t need to know anything before you start. Kumihimo is a very therapeutic craft. So, I can guarantee that with Donna’s expert tuition, you will soon be relaxed and enjoying it for yourself. -- Katie Dean, Bead Flowers * www.myworldofbeads.com *Make your own beautiful jewellery with the ancient Japanese craft of kumihimo. This traditional method of producing braids has been updated for the modern crafter with inexpensive disks and bobbins and is surprisingly easy to do. I have been using my marudai to make kumihimo braids for several years; basic fibre braids can be used for so many things. This book does not require any of the larger, more expensive items but if you have them you can use them to make these beaded braids. If you don’t, the disks and other items you require are easy and inexpensive to obtain and you can use any cords or threads plus a wide range of beads and findings. This is a well laid out, user friendly guide for either a total beginner, or somebody like myself who has made plain braids and wants to add beads and make jewellery. A few pages are given to showing what you need and explaining why you need it; if you already make jewellery you will already own most of it. Start making your first braid without the beads and learn the basics of kumihimo in the next chapter. This includes working out how much thread you need, setting up the disk, the braiding sequence and finishing off. Wisely this first piece is not just a cord but made into a bracelet which, even without beads, is a beautiful and wearable piece. The rest of the book shows you how to add beads, make a variety of different cord types and fill your jewellery box with some gorgeous bracelets, cuffs and necklaces. If you want to see them all at a glance there is a double page at the front with a gallery of the finished pieces. Each project teaches you something new and has some very clear photographs and diagrams showing how to set up the disk, use different types of bead and achieve various effects. There is a list of what you need, useful tips, and sometimes ideas and patterns for variations. I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to try kumihimo and make their own jewellery. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *I found this book very interesting, as I have tried Kumhimo before, but not with beads. It has 12 projects that are clearly set out with photos, detailed instructions and tips. In the projects sections you get a "shopping list" of supplies which takes the guess work out of lengths and quantities required. I intend to try a project soon, but the hardest thing now is to choose which one to try first. -- Sharon Harris * Amazon *Fantastic guide to Kumihimo, 12 beautiful, colourful projects designed to teach the technique in an easy to follow guide. I love that the photography matches the instructions perfectly and don't confuse the reader the way that other craft guides do. I look forward to making the projects from the book and starting a new crafting love affair, a very well written and inspirational book. -- Debbie Mcmurray * Amazon *The book contains 12 projects to make bracelets and necklaces. Each project is explained with great clarity along with detailed diagrams and excellent photographs of every stage of making. All materials and equipment are listed and explained and can be purchased from the author's website which is noted on the inside front cover but not thrust at you on every page. Alternative colourways are suggested and shown for each project. As someone who has done some kumihimo before I was familiar with most of the patterns, but I have never used beads with my braiding before. To be honest I've always been a bit scared of working out how many beads I'd need and the length of thread to use. The book tells you exactly what you require to make an item of a certain size then gives information on how to adapt to be larger or smaller. Whether you are a complete novice or have prior experience of kumihimo or beading you are sure to find this book beneficial and inspirational and with the quality paper you expect of Search Press publications it's a lovely book to browse through and stroke (crafters will know what I mean!). -- Stella Davis * Amazon *I have been intrigued by the technique of Kumihimo for a while and as an avid fan of jewellery - making as a hobby, really wanted to learn this fascinating new skill as I had seen the beautiful braids that can be made using it. As a complete beginner to Kumihimo, I was looking for an instructional book with projects suitable for starters like me and was not disappointed by this lovely book. Although at first glance the technique looked a bit complicated, thanks to the great detailed, step by step instructions in this book, accompanied by clear pictures - a bit of perseverance and time was all that was needed to get me started on braiding. This book contains detailed sections on techniques, the tools needed to make a start, as well as instructions on 'finishing off' (essential to getting a nice professional look) - then twelve projects including bracelets and necklaces. I am really pleased with this book, and look forward trying many of the projects within, once I have perfected the technique further and I'm sure my friends and family will love getting these braided bracelets as gifts. -- Gaynor Lewis * Amazon *I really enjoyed reading the paperback version of this book. It’s the perfect resource for either a beginner or a more advanced Kumihimo braider. Everything you need to know to start Kumihimo braiding is clearly explained and the whole book is well-illustrated. There is an explanation of the materials required and the techniques needed to start braiding and information on how to finish the braids attractively. The book also explains how to progress making Kumihimo braids using beads. There are 12 twelve gorgeous projects to follow which are explained with great clarity aided by clear photography. The projects enable a variety of different techniques to be learned including beading from a centrepiece outwards (in the case of the Jade bracelet); making an eight-braid cuff (Maxine – which is created from two beaded Kumihimo braides); creating a seven-braid bracelet (Jodie bracelet) and making a square cord bracelet (Katie). I’ve fancied learning how to do Kumihimo braiding for a while and after reading this great book I am inspired to start braiding as soon as I can gather the supplies together! -- Christine Lewis * Amazon *Table of ContentsIntroduction Materials Essential Techniques The Projects: Basic eight-braid bracelet Eight-braid beaded bracelet 'Inside-out' bracelet Infinity Knot necklace Four-colour stripe bracelet Flower motif bracelet Beaded popper charm bracelet Crystal kumihimo necklace Eight-braid cuff Simple seven-braid bracelet Eight-braid square cord bracelet Twelve-braid raised cord bracelet Index

Book SynopsisKumihimo is the ancient art of Japanese braidmaking; admired for its dual qualities of usefulness and beauty, and associated with both fashion and the samurai. In this revised and updated edition of her classic instructional book, Jacqui Carey teaches the use of a marudai (round stand) to produce a variety of different types of braids, which can then be used to create countless combinations of colour, texture and material. Clear step-by-step photographs guide the beginner through each of the projects, and many inspirational examples of the variety you can create are shown. The rhythmic movements, feel and sound of the marudai in use make this traditional craft a soothing, absorbing and aesthetically pleasing experience; perfect for weaving a calm area in your day.Trade ReviewNot having come across this art myself, I asked a local craft group (I’m based in Stourbridge in the West Midlands) to review this book, some of whom were able to compare it to the original 1997 publication. The group found the introduction to Japanese braiding provided a clear, easily understood guide to all aspects of equipment, threads and techniques used to produce a range of both round and flat braids. The illustrations, diagrams and photography were clean, clear and easily followed, as were the written explanations. The book also provided step-by-step instructions that allow users to produce a variety of braids with a variety of uses: it brings the ancient craft of Kumihimo within the reach of all those with an interest in learning and developing the techniques in a simple way. Members of the group particularly liked it that each type of braid had a different page background colour and found that the warp circle diagrams were clearer set against a coloured background. Close up photographs of working the braids were good and you could clearly see where the threads were placed. Overall the book looked inviting and the layout generally was streamlined and modern.” Having borrowed some equipment, I tried making a braid myself and found it very satisfying to see the work growing under the circle and the beautiful braid it produced. -- Brenda Smith * Knitting & Crochet Guild - SlipKnot June 2020 *Not having come across this art myself, I asked a local craft group to review this book. I still have my much used copy which introduced me to the wonderful world of “narrow wares” that can be made on a traditional marudai. Fast-forward to 2020 and many people do this craft on handheld disk marudai, but this book deals with the type that sits on the floor and (in my opinion at least) is a lot easier to master. The book opens with what you need to begin, showing photographs of the wooden type, the acrylic version that I use and even a homemade marudai constructed from a lampshade frame and card disk. You will also require bobbins, weights and a few other items which can all be purchased from the website below. Learn how to wind the bobbins, set up the marudai and get started on your first braid with the aid of plenty of captioned photographs. This book is aimed at the beginner and is pretty foolproof; I followed the instructions and was making professional-looking braids on my first day. Make round, square and flat braids, add simple tassels and work in other types of yarn. Note that this book only deals with making the braids, with two pages at the back showing what can be done with them. Finishing them off and using them for tiebacks, jewellery, embroidery etc are dealt with in other books or by having a go. It is not difficult to learn how to make braids using a traditional marudai and this book has the clearest, most user friendly instructions I have seen. Highly recommended. I do not have a marudai stand, but I did make a braid project using a more modern plate. This is a brilliant book for beginners, as it guides you through the steps in an easy to understand step by step technique. The projects are simple but stunning, and include bracelets, necklaces and ties. Each project can be adapted in size, and I loved the rich tonal colours that were used for each piece. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThis book with its overwhelming array of patterns is a bead weaver’s delight. I just purchased a Mirrix Tapestry Loom and can’t wait to warp it and incorporate some of these designs into my woven beaded structures. It is very interesting how the author completely changes the appearance of many of the pieces. These beads are readily available in a wide range of colors which can be purchased in either bags or tubes. Fil One-G-0.25 mm. beige nylon beading thread is recommended. Search Press Ltd Beautiful Braiding Made Easy: Using Kumihimo
Book SynopsisAn easy to follow guide to producing beautiful Japanese braids using Kumihimo disks and plates; templates for which are printed on the cover flap ready to be cut out and used. There is advice on the yarns or threads to use, arranging the threads on the disk or plate, producing many different types of braid, braiding with beads, finishing off and using the braids to make bracelets, necklaces, bag handles and much more.Trade ReviewThe author is an experienced braider who started out on a wooden Madurai before discovering Kumihimo disks and plates. She subsequently found that some of her students, previously put off by complex instructions and expensive equipment, were thrilled that they were able to make braids using these simple little tools. Having recently progressed in the opposite direction, from disk to Marudai, I expected to find this small book a little too simplistic. Far from it. The first eight-thread braid was one that I recognised. On the very next page was a sixteen-thread braid that I might have been reluctant to try, but her diagrams and explanations were so clear that I fished out my disk and made one straight away. In the next section she explained how to change the patterns using different arrangements of the coloured threads around the disk at the start, which I now understand. Later sections covered how to reverse the spiral, hollow braids with and without inserts, triangular braids, chevrons, flat braids, woven braids, zig zag braids and braids with beads. In just 45 pages the author has managed to rekindle my enthusiasm and I will be making much more ambitious braids using my old disk. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to both novice and experienced braiders. -- Sarah A. Pape * The Journal for Weavers, Spinners & Dyers *December 2014 As you can see from the cover of this book you know it's going to be packed full of different designs for you to try. Not only do you get easy to follow instructions you also get your own disk & plate to cut out. This book is an easy to follow guide to Japanese braiding. It covers everything from yarns or threads to use. How to arrange the threads on the disk or plate. How to braid with beads and how to finish off. There are an amazing mix of designs to make. Each looks more amazing than the last. Not only that you are given examples of how you can use the braids. I must admit that there were lots more ideas than I had thought of. To read the rest of this review and many visit Crochet Addict UK or follow this link. http://www.crochetaddictuk.com/2014/12/beautiful-braiding-made-easy-book-review.html * Crochet Addict UK *January 2015 Braiding is not just for hair anymore. Using a Japanese technique she discovered in Australia, textilist and author (Dyeing in Plastic Bags, for one) Deighan not only demonstrates how to use the Kumihimo disk and plate but she also incorporates two ready-to-cut-out versions on the book’s front flap. (For library consideration, tape over the disk and plate with a note about where to order them online.) In all, about 30 patterns are featured, with the disk producing round braids; the plate, the flat version; and then, using beads in the designs. It’s hard to envision, exactly, the process without selecting appropriate threads (usually thin) and simply beginning. At the end of each chapter, a gallery of finished patterns, with page references, appears for crafters; what would make this unusual method even more appealing is the addition of a fourth chapter—ideas for making braids a part of home decor, of clothing, of accessories. * Booklist *Table of ContentsAn introduction Using the Kumihimo disk More ideas for using the Kumihimo disk Using the Kumihimo plate More ideas for using the Kumihimo plate Braiding with beads

Ideal for beginners and more experienced crafters, prepare to become addicted! * Creative Hobbies *Anybody who has ever mixed two-component epoxy glue has already got the required skill to make beautiful jewelry from resin. For foolproof tips, what else to add to the mix and fifty projects this book will tell you the rest. I learned how to do this surprisingly simple and fun craft at the age of about eight with a kit. There are some safety precautions to follow as this is a toxic substance but once you know how to use it (and you already will if you are familiar with epoxy) the rest is fairly easy. This might make it sound boring, but it is an extremely versatile medium that can make some professional looking pieces and is a great way of recycling and upcycling all kinds of materials. The first part of the book deals with what you need and how to do the basics, troubleshooting, using paper, beads, findings etc and the rest is devoted to the projects. Before you get to them there is the excellent feature of a double page spread showing thumbnails of all of them so you can see at a glance what would interest you. These are arranged in four categories: using paper, coloring agents, powder inclusions and 3-D inclusions covering most basic aspects of this craft. Each project covers a page and features a large photograph of the finished item, a list of materials and tools plus the instructions as well as a basic description. This tells you a bit about the piece and also what you will learn by making it. Items used include all kinds of papers including wrapping paper, old books and paper napkins, coloring with things like nail polish, paint and ink, adding glitter, flitter and embossing powder and embedding elements such as old watch parts, presed flowers and shells. Most of the pieces are made using findings with frames and bezels but the final section shows how you can repurpose things like odd game tiles, flat metal shapes and even just a plastic sheet for freeform work. In short, this book manages to show how simple and fun resin work is and it is great to see a book on such an overlooked subject. My tip to beginners is get a kit first and you will have all you need to get started. * myshelf.com *I was initially struck by the picture on the front of this book. Just my style of pretty and stylish jewellery. I'm a bit craft fan and I have bookcases full of craft books I have bought because I liked the cover project. 90% of those books I have never used despite the initial 'i can't live without this book' feeling that I seem to fall for time and time again . Happily I can report that almost every project in this book is on my to do list. I have already sourced the best deals on resin and the equipment need to complete the projects and even though it's only March I have planned many of my Christmas gifts. The book has every bit of information need to complete the projects and a great trouble shooting section. Even if you aren't an experienced crafter I am convinced you will be inspired to take resin jewellery making to new levels using everything from glitter to feathers for pendants, earrings and bracelets that will get your friends and family asking where you bought them. I'm excited to start and I'm sure you will be too. -- Belinda Bentley * Customer Review *I have never made resin jewellery before, but being a crafty person this book was right up my street. I read through the book in one sitting and have a list of resin, bezels and inks to work through some of these projects. If you are looking for a book to make resin jewellery I recommend this, the step by step instructions are easy to understand and the finished pieces look great -- Jade Nuttall * Customer Review *As a newcomer to resin, I was hoping for a book that would both inspire and teach me. I was not disappointed. Apart from the obvious instructions in how to carry out each project, the author has added loads of tips which will helped enormously. The techniques section is clear and jargon free so that I never felt out of my comfort zone. Fabulous photography throughout makes this a lovely book to browse through too. There are enough projects to inspire and each has step by step instructions. I would definitely recommend this to anyone considering making resin jewellery. -- Lilly Roskell * Customer Review *I have used resin before but not for jewellery and my approach was based on knowledge gleaned from random videos on a well-known online platform! Having this book in front of me has been a revelation. The instructions are clear and concise. Lots of good photos when you need them and plenty of good tips to overcome the inevitable hiccups such as air bubbles. Resin does one job (but does it very well) so it’s interesting to see ways to stretch that out into a variety of projects and finishes. This book builds up techniques from scratch, leading you into gradually more complicated and lengthy procedures, covering any possible hitches along the way. I suspect anyone doing resin jewellery would want to eventually experiment with their own style and so the gallery provides inspiration, broadening out the knowledge in order to reach that end. -- Sass Tetzlaff * Customer Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Tools and Materials 8 What is Resin? 10 Troubleshooting 20 Paper Techniques 22 The Projects Using Paper 30 Scrapbook paper 32 Map paper 34 Book paper 36 Origami paper 38 Napkin and tissue paper 40 Washi tape and paper 42 Stamping 44 Heat embossing 46 Inkpad press 48 Image transfer paper 50 Mylar sheets 52 Fabric 54 Colouring Agents 56 Glitter Glue 58 Alcohol Ink 60 Nail polish 62 Acrylic Paint 64 Powder Inclusions 66 Enamelling powder 68 Pigment Powder 70 Clear Fine Glitter 72 German Glass Glitter 74 Embossing powder 76 3-D Inclusions 78 Megaflake 80 Buttons and watch parts 82 Natural inclusions 84 No-bezel Jewellery 86 Wooden shapes 88 Game pieces 90 Freeform Pieces 92 Commercial Moulds 94 Index 96

Search Press Ltd The Encyclopedia of Wire Jewellery Techniques: A
Book SynopsisWhether you are an experienced jewellery-maker looking to move up to the next level, or a complete beginner, The Encyclopedia of Wire Jewellery Making Techniques is an invaluable resource. Using this book you can: Learn how to manipulate wire to create elegant structural designs for earrings, rings, pendants, necklaces, tiaras and brooches with clear, illustrated instructions Combine wire with beads and stones through threading and wrapping for an intricately embellished look Have fun experimenting with different types of wire, from precious metal to electrical and recycled wires Progress from basic wire-working skills to more advanced techniques, such as making linked jump-ring chains, simple soldering, and using chemicals to alter the wire finish.Trade ReviewMar 10 Most jewelry involves wire even if it is just a jump ring or link, and here is a whole book filled with advice on how to achieve many different effects. Hammer it, twist it, make fancy chains, wrap stones and even knit with it to enhance your creations. This is a book aimed at both the more casual jewelry maker and those who have invested in the more advanced trappings of silversmithing. If this is not you then this is less than a quarter of the book, taking the reader from the more basic techniques to the world of metalworking. So in a way the book can serve as a bridge between two crafts as well as teaching even a novice jewelry maker the basics. From choosing tools that are going to serve you well to making jump rings, through using jigs, selecting wire for knitting and crochet, bending it into fancy shapes, making clasps and working with memory wire. I was impressed by the fact that unlike many craft books this really is one to grow with the crafter as they progress from simple beginnings to the more advanced techniques. There are projects to make, photos of finished pieces to inspire and lots of helpful staged methods with plenty of captions as well as clear colored photographs. At the back is a gallery of what can be achieved, much of it if you work through the chapters and a helpful list of suppliers and societies in both the UK and US. I certainly learned a lot, and however many books there are on the market about beads there are not many on this topic, which is fundamental to being a fully fledged jewelry maker. * Myshelf.com *Mar 10 A 'must-have' book for anyone enthusiastic about making their own jewellery. It contains all you need to know about using wire to create unusual and striking designs. Whether you're an experienced jewellery-maker looking to move up to the next level, or a complete beginner, the book is an invaluable resource. * Machine Knitting Monthly *Feb 10 The Encyclopedia of Wire Jewellery by Sara Withers explores a range of different wire working techniques. This includes the basic as well as more advanced techniques and is ideal for beginner wire jewellery makers. More experienced wire jewellery makers may also find plenty to interest them in the book. The illustrated step by step instructions are easy to follow and enough information is given to clearly explain a technique without getting bogged down in irrelevant detail. The book includes a brief section about some key silversmithing techniques. While this is useful to read, readers interested in silversmithing are likely to require more detailed reading on the subject. * Suite101.com *Table of ContentsPrelims Introduction Equipment and materials Core techniques Making findings Decorative shapes Making spacers Decorative chains Making hoop earrings Making beads Using jigs and tools Decorating beads Embellishing findings Working without holes Brooches Rings Twist and knit wire methods Constructing with wire Unusual wires Toward silversmithing Linked jump-ring chains Gallery Resources Index and credits
