Book SynopsisJust because arts organisations are non-profits doesn’t mean they shouldn’t make money; it means the money they make goes back to fund the mission - whether that’s music, visual arts, theatre, dance, or one of many other mediums that enrich our lives. In the US alone, the arts are a $763 billion sector whose 100,000 organisations serve almost every community in the nation. There’s no reason arts organisations should struggle to make ends meet. And now, with arts-tested strategies from Aubrey Bergauer, they won’t. Running your arts organisation like a business is your path forward to: Grow audiences and keep them coming back again - Make our organizations more inclusive - Get younger attendees in the seats and on the donor rolls - Generate millions more dollars in revenue - Continue to create the art we love-without the stress of figuring out how to afford it - The for-profit world knows how to achieve success across customer engagement, the user experience, company culture, the subscription economy, technology and media, new revenue streams, and brand relevance. Run it Like a Business provides a powerful, proven framework to help all arts organisations revitalise their economic engines and ultimately serve the art and its patrons.

Book SynopsisI Was Never Alone or Oporniki presents an original ethnographic stage play, based on fieldwork conducted in Russia with adults with disabilities. The core of the work is the script of the play itself, which is accompanied by a description of the script development process, from the research in the field to rehearsals for public performances. In a supporting essay, the author argues that both ethnography and theatre can be understood as designs for being together in unusual ways, and that both practices can be deepened by recognizing the vibrant social impact of interdependency animated by vulnerability, as identified by disability theorists and activists.Table of ContentsAbout This Book Foreword Play Script Cast of Characters Setting Time Portrait I: Vera Portrait II: Vakas Portrait III: Alina Portrait IV: Sergei Portrait V: Rudak Portrait VI: Anya Photos Ethnographer’s Essay: Rituals of Vulnerability Introduction Background a. Book SynopsisTake Stage! is the first comprehensive how-to book for lesbians wanting to produce or direct lesbian theatre. Controversial and anecdotal, Take Stage! is written for the lesbian with no previous experience with theatre or lesbian organization. In addition to chapters on auditioning, rehearsals, selecting the script, booking space, and assembling a staff, the book includes chapters on issues of special interest to lesbians. Take Stage! includes information on how to challenge the ismslookism, racism, classism, ageism, and other prejudices with which lesbian culture is currently engaged. It also looks at problems of accountability in non-hierarchal structures, boundary-setting among all-volunteer staffs, sabotage via hidden agendas or disassociative behaviors, horizontal hostility, and internalized homophobia. The appendix contains sample contracts, audition forms, light plots, budgets, and schedules. From the decision to produce the play to opening night and touring, Take Stage! covers all the bases and provides a healthy dose of moral support.Trade Review...a practical, hands-on guide for anyone directing and producing a play by, with, for or about lesbians by a woman who has been involved in every aspect of lesbian theater. * Feminist Bookstore News *Geared to the fledgling lesbian director and producer, Gage's handbook is chock-full of new ideas and common sense about choosing, mounting, publicizing, and surviving the live theatre experience...crack's open the mysteries of the successful theatrical venture. Most important, the book addresses the complex underpinnings of accountability, leadership, and collaboration in the differently structured world of women-run groups...two chapters on victims and leadership deliver such savvy and sage advice that they should be required reading for all women who work in organizations...even while preoccupied with basics, Gage doesn't neglect the artistic/spiritual aspects of why we do theatre in the first place... Take Stage! really does deliver what it promises: to take the inexperienced director and producer through all stages of production...rejoice that a real resource guide is available, one that is concise, readable, and inspiring. * The Lesbian Review Of Books *Table of ContentsPart 1 Acknowledgments Part 2 Preface Part 3 Introduction Chapter 4 I: Getting Started Chapter 5 1. Cambridge University Press Clean Break Theatre Company

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisClean Break Theatre Company is a women-only theatre company that grew out of a prisoner-led drama workshop that took place between 1977?1979 in HMP Askham Grange. In addition to its considerable impact on criminalised women and public understandings of the socio-political impact of their experiences, Clean Break has had a significant but under-acknowledged impact on contemporary British theatre. We examine three areas of Clean Break''s theatre making history and organisational practices: its origin stories; its education and engagement work; and how the company''s performance practices have, across five decades, ''then'' and ''now'', adapted to directly intervene in carceral society. By highlighting Clean Break''s distinct activist theatre making processes and practices, the book makes explicit the genealogical connections of the company''s past work and its impacts on contemporary feminist theatre practices.

His numerous published works range from culinary/theatrical intersections, to mobile Shakespeare, to American drag, to a book on performance anthropology. He is a visiting scholar at The Public Theater.Trade ReviewThe first book to hold a mirror up to an American theatre in the pandemic era. . . . The Public's leadership role in the field and the challenge of adhering to its increasingly relevant principles make One Public a compelling case study. As American theatre in the 2020s stands on 'the ledge of survival,' this book will be an instructive read for anyone interested in knowing how the field can endure. * American Theatre *Informative and very readable ... [an] excellent overview of an iconic theatre. * British Theatre Guide *Bring[s] the theatres, productions, the personnel and the ideas of One Public to life. . . . Thoroughly inspiring. . . . This is a book worth reading and rereading. * Robin's Room *Landis is deft at weaving together history, institutional aspirations, and personalities to create an honest and compelling account of one theater’s visionary efforts to create art everyone can access. In meticulously dissecting the story of the Public Theater using interviews from dozens of artists One Public feels as alive as the artform it describes. Landis doesn’t shy away from addressing the upheaval the Public and its Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis face as COVID and demands for racial equity force a slow art form and a large institution to change with the same fervor it brings to its historic productions—wonderfully chronicled here. Landis’ passion for theater pops off every page making this book essential reading for anyone who believes in the power of live stories to enrich our culture and our nation. * P Carl, Distinguished Artist in Residence, Emerson College *A compelling read. . . . Book SynopsisHave you ever prepared a speech until you knew it by heart and then found out that, when the moment arrives, the surprise and uniqueness of hic et nunc are inevitable? No matter how much you prepare a text, it will need improvisation to be used on a stage or in the street. But, what is the limit between improvisation and technique, experience and training? Can we scientifically measure the improvisation of a text? This work aims to investigate in which dimension art meets science and how it happens. Artists need to discover new conceptual instruments that contribute to the probing of the laws of matter, social existence, and the human mind. The rigorous and fascinating trip that Anna Grazia Cafaro proposes to capture the sense, function, and nature of the actor's improvisation is a splendid and a unique example of a new alliance between art and science, predicted forty years ago by the scientist Ilya Prigogine and the philosopher Isabelle Stengers. Book SynopsisMiguel de Cervantes’s experimentation with theatricality is frequently tied to the notion of revelation and disclosure of hidden truths. Drawing the Curtain showcases the elements of theatricality that characterize Cervantes’s prose and analyses the ways in which he uses theatricality in his own literary production. Bringing together the works of well-known scholars, who draw from a variety of disciplines and theoretical approaches, this collection demonstrates how Cervantes exploits revelation and disclosure to create dynamic dramatic moments that surprise and engage observers and readers. Hewing closely to Peter Brook’s notion of the bare or empty stage, Esther Fernández and Adrienne L. Martín argue that Cervantes’s omnipresent concern with theatricality manifests not only in his drama but also in the myriad metatheatrical instances dispersed throughout his prose works. In doing so, Drawing the Curtain sheds light on the ways in which CervTable of ContentsIntroduction: The Poetics of the Imagined Stage Esther Fernández and Adrienne L. University Press of Mississippi Chronicle of a Camera: The Arriflex 35 in North America, 1945-1972

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume provides a history of the most consequential 35mm motion picture camera introduced in North America in the quarter century following the Second World War: the Arriflex 35. It traces the North American history of this camera from 1945 through 1972--when the first lightweight, self-blimped 35mm cameras became available. Chronicle of a Camera emphasizes theatrical film production, documenting the Arriflex's increasingly important role in expanding the range of production choices, styles, and even content of American motion pictures in this period. The book's exploration culminates most strikingly in examples found in feature films dating from the 1960s and early 1970s, including a number of films associated with what came to be known as the ""Hollywood New Wave."" The author shows that the Arriflex prompted important innovation in three key areas: it greatly facilitated and encouraged location shooting; it gave cinematographers new options for intensifying visual style and content; and it stimulated low-budget and independent production. Films in which the Arriflex played an absolutely central role include Bullitt, The French Connection, and, most significantly, Easy Rider. Using an Arriflex for car-mounted shots, hand-held shots, and zoom-lens shots led to greater cinematic realism and personal expression.

Haymarket Books A Moment on the Clock of the World: A Foundry

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA MOMENT ON THE CLOCK OF THE WORLD is an invitation to consider how we make the world, together. It collects the voices of people who respond to this invitation with their living lives and prolific work: artists, social justice practitioners, cultural critics and public intellectuals — Cornel West, Taylor Mac, Alisa Solomon, Robin D.G. Kelley and Laura Flanders among them — whose own inquiries intersected with that of the award-winning Foundry Theatre across its 25-year history. Notions of collaboration, art, community, space, prefigurative politics, metrics, and Time animate a conversation about the ways that artists and social justice workers build a more equitable world, and the historic challenges of their doing so together. A MOMENT ON THE CLOCK OF THE WORLD follows The Foundry’s long-standing tradition for creating provocative relationships between form and content. Its layout divides each page into two discrete horizontal sections; the top two-thirds contain each contributor’s chapter, while the bottom of the pages throughout the book hold a history of The Foundry’s inquiry by the company’s founder. There is no prescribed way to read this book. Rather, it is designed to invite the reader to discover and gather shared themes and ideas in any number of ways. The title of the book recalls renowned social activist and philosopher Grace Lee Boggs’s legendary — and for some, incendiary — call for a new kind of activism: “Now is the time on the clock of the world to grow our souls.” This book gathers together hard-won insights of its “moment.” It’s a moment on the continuum of ever in the (r)evolutionary human project of making the world. Trade Review“This beautiful volume, celebrating the uncompromising vision of New York’s Foundry Theatre, reminds us that the impossible is possible through creative courage and the conviction of one’s deepest principles." —Los Angeles Times "These stunning essays, interviews, incantations, manifestations are by the best radical thinkers in the U.S. A. This collection is a manifesto filled with bold ideas, magic and poetry, a living record of the best of what is still called the ‘un-American tradition’ in theater. This is political and creative courage at its best and the voices inside this work are not only subversive but reach to the very root of why we make theater, why we keep coming back. Best of all, this book wrenches apart neo-liberal notions of what ‘resistance’ truly is, and redefines and recontructs them from the root up. And the root is the only place where the radical still lives. And there also lives The Foundry theater." —Naomi Wallace "Below the lofts, gyms, and dog-walking, is a radical history of cultural resistance and wildness. An essential inspiration and document for those interested in curing the gentrification of the mind.” —Nato Thompson, author, Culture as Weapon: The Art of Influence in Everyday Life "The Foundry Theatre is the great exemplar of artistic excellence, political courage, and visionary hope of American theatre in the late 20th and early 21st centuries." —Cornel West, (from the Foreword) "A fascinating testament to the game-changing spirit of one of the most important things to happen to the American theatre. Any artist or producer seeking inspiration or lessons on how to truly shake things up should start here.” —Branden Jacobs-Jenkins "The Foundry Theatre has quietly been responsible for some of the most artistically ambitious work seen in New York in recent years." —The New York Times "The Foundry has a long history of pushing plays beyond the boundaries of traditional theatre in terms of form, content, and location." —Time Out "The Foundry Theatre has excellent vision. • A Moment on the Clock of the World: A Foundry

Haymarket Books A Moment on the Clock of the World: A Foundry

    Out of stock

Trade Review"These stunning essays, interviews, incantations, manifestations are by the best radical thinkers in the U.S. And there also lives The Foundry theater." —Naomi Wallace "The Foundry Theatre is the great exemplar of artistic excellence, political courage, and visionary hope of American theatre in the late 20th and early 21st centuries." —Cornel West, (from the Foreword) "The Foundry Theatre has quietly been responsible for some of the most artistically ambitious work seen in New York in recent years." —The New York Times "The Foundry has a long history of pushing plays beyond the boundaries of traditional theatre in terms of form, content, and location." —Time Out "The Foundry Theatre has excellent vision. Book SynopsisThis book focuses on the most successful feature films of John Carney, namely Once (2006), Begin Again (2013) and Sing Street (2016). Drawing on narrative, formalist and genre theories of film, the book presents an in-depth examination of how the formal and stylistic choices made by Carney allow each film to narrate a story in a coherent way. It shows how aural and visual contrivances are hidden behind a façade of realism, and how the films engage with universal, national and personal concerns and also how they relate to each other and to Irish and American film in general. It also explores the textual articulation of genre in each and the discrepancies between such articulation, the genre expectations set up by the promotional discourse coming from the publicity materials and events accompanying each release, and the genre labelling of each film in contemporary reviews by professional critics from the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Ireland.Table of ContentsContents: Introduction – Once (2006): The Musical That Pretended It Was Not a Musical – Begin Again (2013): The Remake That Pretended It Was Not a Remake – Sing Street (2016): The Coming-of-Ager That Pretended It Was Just a Musical – Conclusion.

Book SynopsisWith a new foreword by Stewart Pringle, Playwright and Dramaturg of the National Theatre of Great Britain. Winner of the 1997 Theatre Book Prize Peggy Ramsay was the most admired British play agent of the twentieth century. With a matchless ability to visualise a play just by reading it on the page, she set up in business in 1953, and over the years nurtured and developed the most dazzling client list which included Eugene Ionesco, Joe Orton, Robert Bolt, David Mercer, John McGrath, Iris Murdoch, John Mortimer, James Saunders, Peter Nichols, Charles Wood, Ann Jellicoe, Edward Bond, Christopher Hampton, David Hare, Alan Ayckbourn, Caryl Churchill, Howard Brenton and Willy Russell. Her role in the development of modern British drama was central. One of the most remarkable things about her was her instinctive generosity. Peggy believed that the living playwright belonged at the centre of the theatre. A theatre without new writing talent to refresh it was worthless. Book SynopsisCelebrities can come from many different realms: film, music, politics, sports. But what do all these major celebrities have in common? What elevates them to the status of household names while their equally talented peers remain in relative obscurity? Is it just a question of charisma, or does fame depend more on the collective fantasies of fans than the actual accomplishments of celebrities? In search of answers, cultural historian Eric Burns delves deep into the biographies of some of the most famous figures in American history, from Benjamin Franklin to Fanny Kemble, Elvis Presley to Gene Tierney, and Michael Jordan to Oprah Winfrey. Through these case studies, he considers the evolution of celebrity throughout the ages. More controversially, he questions the very status of fame in the twenty-first century, an era in which thousands of minor celebrities have seen their fifteen minutes in the spotlight. The Politics of Fame is a provocative and entertaining look at the lives and afterlives of America’s most beloved celebrities as well as the mad devotion they inspired. It raises important questions about what celebrity worship reveals about the worshippers—and about the state of the nation itselfTrade Review"Eric Burns's book provides a fascinating chronology of the politics of fame from the American founder fathers to the present day. The volume includes many interesting anecdotes upon this important topic." -- Mark Wheeler * London Metropolitan University and author of Celebrity Politics *In this incendiary cultural commentary on the place of fame in politics, Burns’ links what he sees as a decline in educational standards with the “false intimacy” of celebrity. He describes a political environment in which the political classes pander to the “wisdom” of an electorate starved of genuine intelligence. Burns’ book will inspire and infuriate in equal measure, but as a warning against the influence of fame contemporary, it is unmissable. -- Michael Higgins * Senior Lecturer, Director of MLitt in Media and Communication at the University of Strathclyd *Table of ContentsContents Epigraph A Note to Readers Prologue PART ONE Chapter One: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Fame Chapter Two: The Celebrity With A Cause Chapter Three: The Cultural Commodity Chapter Four: At Long Last, Class Chapter Five: Circulation Wars Chapter Six: The Press and the Immigrants The Chapter Seven: The Deviancy of Adulation Part TWO Chapter One: The Decreasing Literacy Rate Chapter Two: The Leveling Forces of Democracy Chapter Three: The Declining Importance of Faith Chapter Four: The Acceleration of Haste Chapter Five: The False Intimacy of the Media Epilogue Bibliography Notes Index

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFor over a hundred years a wildly held assumption has ruled the debate on the social composition of theatre audiences. This assumption states that in the period from the late eighteenth century to the Great War (1773 -1914) theatre audience was largely elite, till the French Revolution chased them to opera. The drama performances were sought by petty bourgeois and unskilled labour force, till, in 1870, the re-conquest of the stage by the upper bourgeoisie set in. In this study for the first time a large empirical research is presented to test this ‘master narrative’. Based on thorough archival research from the past twenty years, combined with robust statistical analysis, the conclusion with respect to this still dominant narrative can be short: it is to be fully rejected.Table of ContentsContents: Master narrative of Theatre Historiography – A prosopography of nineteenth century Rotterdam Theatre Patrons – Shareholders of the Rotterdam Theatre.
