Book Synopsis''A scout must always be prepared at any moment to do his duty, and to face danger in order to help his fellow-men.''A startling amalgam of Zulu war-cry and imperial and urban myth, of borrowed tips on health and hygiene, and object lessons in woodcraft, Robert Baden-Powell''s Scouting for Boys (1908) is the original blueprint and ''self-instructor'' of the Boy Scout Movement. One of the all-time bestsellers in the English-speaking world, this primer of ''yarns and pictures'' constitutes probably the most influential manual for youth ever published. Yet the book is at the same time a roughly composed hodge-podge of jingoist lore and tracker legend, padded with lengthy quotations from adventure fiction and Baden-Powell''s own autobiography, and seamed through with the multiple anxieties of its time: fears of degeneration, concerns about masculinity and self-restraint, invasion paranoia. Book SynopsisOphelia Field’s ‘Kit-Cat Club’ is a story of a changing time in 17th-century Britain, during the reigns of Queen Anne and George I, when a group of men and their enterprising initiatives paved the way for new literary and political viewpoints, born out of the most unexpected circumstances.Trade Review‘The decades after the Civil Wars have been rich pickings for cultural historians. These were the years of coffee houses and clubs, an atmosphere captured in Ophelia Field's wonderrful THE KIT-KAT CLUB.’ Dominic Sandbrook, Daily Telegraph (Book of the Year) Christian Tyler, Financial Times (Book of the Year) ‘Field is meticulous in describing the literary and other artistic achievements of the wits in the club: but the fascination of this book lies in the tale she tells of their social advancement and, to an extent, of the way the club altered manners and attitudes to class around the country.' Literary Review ‘In a general book such as this, with such broad general themes, the details matter. Here Field has succeeded admirably. She has a native gift for historical retrieval so that we see the past in close-up, as it were, as well as in wide view.’ The Times 'After reading this stimulating book, it is shocking to realise that the Kit-Cat Club has had to wait so long for its influence to be recognised. Field offers rich compensation, in a book that is both instructive and engrossingly readable.' Guardian (Book of the Week) 'What particularly distinguishes this book is the humane perspective in which the writer places her protagonists…As an essay in group biography her book presents an authoritative portrait of a genuinely revolutionary era.' Sunday Telegraph ‘Elegantly written…this deeply researched book is a fitting memorial to a remarkable body of men who contributed so much to British politics and culture.’ Sunday Times

Book SynopsisIn 1999, a seemingly incongruous collection of protestors converged in Seattle to shut down the meetings of the World Trade Organization. Union leaders, environmentalists dressed as endangered turtles, mainstream Christian clergy, violence-advocating anarchists, gay and lesbian activists, and many other diverse groups came together to protest what they saw as the unfair power of a nondemocratic elite. But how did such strange bedfellows come together? And can their unity continue? In 1972another period of social upheavalsociologist Colin Campbell posited a ''cultic milieu'': An underground region where true seekers test hidden, forgotten, and forbidden knowledge. Ideas and allegiances within the milieu change as individuals move between loosely organized groups, but the larger milieu persists in opposition to the dominant culture. Jeffrey Kaplan and Helene Loow find Campbell''s theory especially useful in coming to grips with the varied oppositional groups of today. While the issues diTrade ReviewWhat do deep ecologists, neo-nazis, goths, black nationalists, and urban shamans have in common? They are all part of a 'cultic milieu,' an underground culture that embraces everyone, right or left, good or bad, who thrives on standing in opposition to the social mainstream. The articles in this book explore how and why, as they analyze movements that have rarely been brought together before. It's a fantastic collection, bound to blow the world of cultic studies wide open. -- Robert Ellwood, (University of Southern California)This is an important and timely book that focus attention on an increasingly significant phenomenon, that of cultural opposition and dissent. It is gratifying to find cultic milieu theory being revived in this context and being put to such good use to shed light on the confusing and diverse world of radical environmentalism, communitarianism, racism, mysticism and magic. Kaplan and Loow are to be congratulated on producing a collection that constitutes the first serious attempt to chart this complex phenomenon and in so doing giving us invaluable insights into the contemporary world of cultural deviance and resistance. -- Colin Campbell, (York University)This book is a provocative and useful contribution to understanding pluralism. -- W. Book SynopsisMischa Honeck's Our Frontier Is the World is a provocative account of how the Boy Scouts echoed and enabled American global expansion in the twentieth century. The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has long been a standard bearer for national identity. The core values of the organization have, since its founding in 1910, shaped what it means to be an American boy and man. As Honeck shows, those masculine values had implications that extended far beyond the borders of the United States. Writing the global back into the history of one of the country's largest youth organizations, Our Frontier Is the World details how the BSA operated as a vehicle of empire from the Progressive Era up to the countercultural moment of the 1960s. American boys and men wearing the Scout uniform never simply hiked local trails to citizenship; they forged ties with their international peers, camped in foreign lands, and started troops on overseas military bases. Scouts traveled to Africa and eTrade ReviewThought-provoking and deeply researched.... Our Frontier Is the World covers much fresh ground. Indeed, Honeck's expansive narrative provides new insights on a wide variety of topics, from the development of mass media to the commodification of Native American culture to the role of youth in waging the Cold War.... Exploring the complex nexus of boyhood and empire, Our Frontier Is the World deftly illuminates the contours of U.S. power. * Journal of Social History *In a richly detailed and researched book, nearly a quarter of the pages are dedicated to sources and citations, providing a history of the BSA while at the same time exploring the evolution of the United States as an imperial power. Honeck provides details, research, and several sources to make his argument. The book presents a complex and intriguing picture of the intersection of a service organization, empire, and identity in the twentieth century... Honeck's fine work chronicles the intentions of the BSA, but it remains an open question as to what the effects were on everyday Scouts. * H-Net *This original and incisive portrait of scouting's shifting global frontiers demonstrates the centrality of this iconic youth organization to the construction and maintenance of U.S. * The Journal of American History *Honeck provides a superbly written and richly detailed history of the Boy Scouts abroad. He fully accomplishes his goal to show that the BSA's agenda neatly dovetailed with U.S. foreign policy in times of crisis by becoming a useful tool from which to sharpen U.S. influence abroad behind the innocent faces of young American boys. * Diplomatic History *Our Frontier Is the World: The Boy Scouts in the Age of American Ascendancy is an expansive examination of the global history of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and the organization's role in promoting "American ascendancy" in cultural, political, and even military realms.... Honeck's book is a critical addition to the field * Journal of Southern History *This masterly study of the BSA will appeal to students and scholars of U.S. empire and to anyone invested in understanding how age-related constructs of difference operated within the intertwined national and globalized youthscapes of the tumultuous twentieth century * The Journal of American history *Mischa Honeck's Our Frontier Is the World demonstrates how fields of historiography can fruitfully overlap if not quite merge... In splendidly researched and forcefully argued narrative, standards intertwine in clear view, enlivened by quotations and anecdotes... Book Synopsis'A celebration of human idiosyncrasy and of our talent for building shared meaning and solidarity out of the strangest material' – TLSFans takes the reader on a journey through a constellation of fandoms, and along the way demonstrates some fundamental truths about the human condition.Fascinating and thought-provoking, Fans is a story of communities, of what happens to us when we interact with people who share our passions. The human brain is wired to reach out, and while our groupish tendencies can bring much strife (religious intolerance, racism, war, etc.), they are also the source of some of our greatest satisfactions.Fandoms offer much of the pleasure of tribalism with little of the harm: a feeling of belonging and of shared culture, a sense of meaning and purpose, improved mental well-being, reassurance that our most outlandish convictions will be taken seriously, and the freedom to try to emulate (and dress like) our hero. But Bond shows that despite these benefits, the world of fandoms is not without its dark underside, from the “copycat effect” fuelling mass shootings to the delusions that can accompany the parasocial relationships that fans feel they have with their heroes. In Fans, Michael Bond draws on the work of social psychologists and anthropologists to understand how people behave in groups and why such groups have such a profound effect on human culture.Trade ReviewEntertaining and insightful * The Times *Highly enjoyable * Independent *A celebration of human idiosyncrasy and of our talent for building shared meaning and solidarity out of the strangest material * TLS *A fascinating insight into why people come together in pursuit of something they love and the very real benefits it can bring to our lives * i-D *Bond’s research is extensive, informative, engagingly presented and his topic timely. * Financial Times *

Book SynopsisAn exploration of the origins, influences, and legacy of the scandalous Hell-Fire Clubs of the 18th century and beyond • Reveals the club’s origins in the work of Rabelais and the magical practices of John Dee and how their motto, “Do What You Will,” deeply influenced Aleister Crowley • Explores the cross-fertilization of liberty and libertinage within these clubs that influenced both U.S. and French Revolutions • Examines the debaucherous activities and famous members of many Hell-Fire Clubs, including Sir Francis Dashwood’s Monks of Medmenham Mention the Hell-Fire Clubs and you conjure up an image of aristocratic rakes cutting a swath through the village maidens. Which is true, but not the whole truth. The activities of these clubs of upper-class Englishmen revolved around not only debauchery but also blasphemy, ritual, quasi-magical pursuits, and political intrigue. Providing a history of these infamous clubs, Geoffrey Ashe reveals their origins in the work of François Rabelais and the activities of John Dee. He shows how the Hell-Fire Clubs’ anything-goes philosophy of “Do what you will”--also Aleister Crowley’s famous motto--and community template were drawn directly from Rabelais. The author looks at the very first Hell-Fire Club, founded by Philip, Duke of Wharton, in 1720 and then at the Society of the Dilettanti, a fraternity formed in 1732. Ashe examines the life, travels, and influences of Sir Francis Dashwood, founding member of the Society of the Dilettanti and the scandalous Permissive Society at Medmenham, also known as the Monks of Medmenham. He also explores other Hell-Fire clubs the movement inspired throughout England, Scotland, and Ireland, including the violence-prone Mohocks and the Appalling Club. He shows how many illustrious figures of the day were members of these societies, such as Lord Byron. He also examines the rumors that Benjamin Franklin was a member, an allegation that can be neither confirmed nor denied. Exploring the political and magical ideas that fueled this movement, the author shows how the cross-fertilization of liberty and libertinage within the Hell-Fire Clubs went on to influence both the U.S. and French revolutions, as well as the hippie movement of the 1960s, the Church of Satan founded by Anton LaVey, and the motorcycle club known as the Hell’s Angels. The legacy of the Hell-Fire Clubs continues to impact society, beckoning both elite and outsider to cast aside social norms and “do what you will.”Trade Review“Geoffrey Ashe, one of Britain’s most outstanding historians, paints a vivid picture of Francis Dashwood’s Hell-Fire Club and other similar secret societies in this page-turning review of one of England’s most audacious periods of history.” * Andrew Collins, bestselling author of Göbekli Tepe *“A sweeping history of libertinism seen through the lens of the English ‘clubs’ of the eighteenth century. Precise and cogent, it also freely wanders the halls of infamy, painting portraits of some of the subject’s most notorious figures. The motto ‘do what thou will’ defines a stance through this history, one that pulls at the Gordian knots of pain and pleasure, freedom and destiny.” * Jesse Bransford, associate professor of visual arts and chair of the Department of Art and Art Profe *Table of ContentsAcknowledgmentsPreface to the 2019 Edition Prologue “Hell Is the Place for Me” PART ONE Speculation 1 The Abbey of All Delights 2 Occult Wife-SwappingPART TWO Realization 3 Whigs and Rakes4 A Dukedom in Hell 5 Whatever Is, Is Right 6 Bubb and Fred 7 Castle Building8 Medmenham 9 The Favorite and the Maverick 10 The Hell-Fire Ministry11 AftermathPART THREE Nightmare 12 The Gothic Plunge13 The Divine Marquis 14 End or Beginning?A Note on Sex Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisFootball is more than just a sport. The pitch reveals emotion in the extreme: from the glory of goals, the rollercoaster of club loyalty, through to the immense pressure of expectation, fear of injury, and crushing defeat. Fans, players, managers, coaches and even those new to the sport can’t help but be swept up by the drama of the beautiful game. But when players at the peak of their physical fitness commit suicide, or poor mental health derails careers, there can still be a stunned silence in the community, a lack of connection. Dominic Stevenson, a writer, player, coach and lifelong football obsessive, interviews a diverse cross-section of characters in the football world to try to understand this lost connection between the sport and the mind. This book contains contributions from internationally renowned players such as Sam Hutchinson, Chris Kirkland, Ella Masar, John Harkes and Iffy Onoura. From voices at top clubs around the globe including Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and DC United, to the stories of smaller clubs and unsung heroes behind the scenes, Dominic reveals personal battles both on and off the pitch, touching on anxiety, depression, discrimination, trauma, identity and recovery. Book SynopsisEveryone knows three things about the Women's Institute: that they spent the war making jam; the sensational Calendar Girls were WI; and, more recently, that slow-handclapping of Tony Blair. But there's so much more to this remarkable Movement. Over 200,000 women in the UK belong to the WI and their membership is growing. They cross class and religion, include all ages -from students and metropolitan young professionals, such as the Shoreditch Sisters,to rural centenarians -with passions that range from supporting the 1920s Bastardy Bill (in response to a wartime legacy of illegitimate babies) to the current SOS for Honey Bees campaign. It was founded in 1915, not by worthy ladies in tweeds but by the feistiest women in the country, including suffragettes, academics and social crusaders who discovered the heady power of sisterhood, changing women's lives and their world in the process. Certainly its members boiled jam and sang ' Jerusalem ', but they also made history. This fascinating book reveals for the first time how they are - and always were - a force to be reckoned with.

Book SynopsisExploding tins of beans over a campfire. Hammering down tent pegs in the rain. Marching for hours, singing for days, and playing ‘Bulldog’s Charge’ at every opportunity. This Scouting Life is a story about the experiences shared by millions of people worldwide, and in communities all across Ireland. For the author, Archie Raeside, this is the story of how an eight-year-old boy in Dublin of 1947 decides he wants to become a Scout and how that desire becomes a reality. As the author rose through the ranks, his memories paint a picture of a changing organisation and a changing Ireland, recounting his involvement with Presidency of Eamon De Valera and the visit of Pope John Paul in 1979. This is a book that tells the story of one man’s life within the Irish Scouts, but in the memories he evokes and the scenes he recaptures, this is a book about a simpler time of which we were all a part.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Animal Revolution: Changing Attitudes Towards Speciesism

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhen Richard Ryder coined the term 'speciesism' over two decades ago, the issue of animal rights was very much a minority concern that had associations with crankiness. Today, the animal rights movement is well-established across the globe and continues to gain momentum, with animal experimentation for medical research high on the agenda and very much in the news. This pioneering book - an historical survey of the relationship between humans and non-humans - paved the way for these developments. Revised, updated to include the movement's recent history and available in paperback for the first time, and now introducing Ryder's concept of 'painism', Animal Revolution is essential reading for anyone who cares about animals or humanity. Dr Richard D. Ryder is a psychologist, ethicist, historian and political campaigner. He is also a past chairman of the RSPCA. His other books include Victims of Science: The Use of Animals in Research, The Political Animal: The Conquest of Speciesism and Animal Welfare and the Environment (editor). As Mellon Professor, he taught Animal Welfare at Tulane University.Trade Review'A fascinating account of how animals have been regarded and treated from ancient times to the present day ... Buy this book for the history and the campaigning ... buy it for the psychology and the ideas too. Even if you don't agree with him, Ryder is never less than stimulating.' International Society for Applied Ethology Newsletter 'It would be difficult to find a text that provides a more comprehensive history of man's changing use and relationship to non-human animals.' 'A book full of valuable observations and insights? This book has something important to say and Richard Ryder knows how to say it.' Freethinker (2000) Richard Ryder analyses such springs of human conduct as machismo, stoicism and squeamishness. He has never been afraid to court controversy or to unleash uncomfortable new ideas. This is a bracing book. Times Literary Supplement As an introduction to the history of human exploitation of animals, and the increasingly effective attempts by the enlightened to make amends, this book cannot be bettered. Book SynopsisThe British Women's Institute is more often associated with jam and Jerusalem than radical activity, but in this book Maggie Andrews explores the WI's relationship with feminism from the formation of the organisation in 1915 up to the eve of British feminism's renaissance in the late 1960s. The book aims to challenge, not only common sense perceptions about the Women's Institute but also those about feminism, interrogating preoccupations with domestic spaces and skills. This makes it is valuable reading for those interested in both historical and contemporary feminism, as well as, more broadly, the history of the twentieth century. Attention is given to the female cultural space and the value system provided by the WI, and the campaigns that articulated the needs of rural women and attempted to meet them. In this 100th anniversary year of the founding of the WI, this celebrated text is re-published in a new and completely revised edition. Maggie Andrews's new afterword considers the resurgence of interest in the WI amongst young women in the twenty-first century, and the relationship between this and the contemporary cultural enthusiasm for the domestic. Book SynopsisYouth clubs like the Boys’ Brigade became a trend in the UK in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Jewish community in the UK began their own clubs to educate and entertain young Jews. These clubs mirrored the examples begun within the Christian community and adapted their models of social control by providing purposeful recreation, religious education and sporting activities to cultivate young minds and bodies. Much primary source material exists on these clubs, including publicity material provided by the clubs themselves as well as oral history accounts given by former members. This book looks at the records left behind by the Jewish clubs and asks to what extent they were successful in providing Jewish education to Jewish youth and how this education was defined by gender. The author ultimately argues that some religious elements were evident in these clubs and that where they were included, inclusive British identities were promoted.Table of ContentsCONTENTS: Judaism, Masculinity and Femininity, 1880–1939 – Girls’ Clubs, 1886–1939 – Boys’ Clubs, 1896–1939 – The Jewish Lads’ Brigade, 1895–1939 – Jewish Scout and Guide Groups, 1907–1939 – The West Central Jewish Girls’ Club, 1893–1939 – The Oxford and St George’s Jewish Youth Club, 1913–1939 – Religion in the Clubs.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Chinese Communist Youth League is the largest youth political organization in the world, with over 80 million members. Former Chinese President Hu Jintao was a firm supporter of the League, and believed that it could play a bigger role in winning the hearts and minds of Chinese youth by actively engaging with their interests and demands. Accordingly, he provided the League with a new youth work mandate to increase its capacity for responsiveness under the slogan 'keep the Party assured and the youth satisfied'. This original investigation of the hitherto-unexamined organization uses a combination of interviews, surveys and ethnography to explore how the League implemented Hu's mandate at both local and national levels, exposing the contradictory nature of some of its campaigns. By doing so, it also sheds light on the reasons for Xi Jinping's turn against the League during his first term in office. The Chinese Communist Youth League: Juniority and Responsiveness in a Party Youth Organization develops the original concept of 'juniority' to capture the complex ways that generational power is institutionalized, alienating young people from official political processes, with significant implications for China's political development. The book will be of interest to researchers and students of Chinese politics, as well as to scholars of comparative youth politics and sociology.Trade Review"Konstantinos Tsimonis’s new book is an important contribution to an understudied subject. [...] The volume also includes a very helpful discussion of the declining fortunes of the Youth League under Xi Jinping, who not only viewed the league as a bastion of factionalism – the so-called 'league faction' that provided a base of support for the Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao administration. [...] Fortunately, we have this excellent book by Tsimonis to enlighten us on why Hu’s reforms were doomed from the start."- Stanley Rosen, University of Southern California, China Information 36 (1) (2022) "Konstantinos D. Tsimonis’ book is an important and timely study that offers a crucial contribution to our understanding of Party-youth relations in contemporary China. [...] the book also addresses youth political organizations’ experience in the former socialist countries and in doing so develops an analytical framework that captures and also goes beyond the peculiarities of the Chinese case." - Sofia Graziani, The China Journal, Vol. 88, July 2022 "This book adds valuable insights into the inner workings of the CYL in various institutions. It adds nuanced analysis on, for instance, the differences between students at elite universities and vocational colleges’ perceptions of and engagement with the CYL (Chapter 3). Tsimonis’ in-depth analysis of the concept of youth and the subordination of youth interests makes this book a valuable contribution to the study of China’s mass organisations and youth as a political subject under authoritarianism. Altogether, Tsimonis’ book is a solid contribution to the study of contemporary China and youth political participation and will undoubtedly be of interest to scholars and students in China studies, youth studies and political science more broadly."- Rebekka Åsnes Sagild, European Journal of East Asian Studies 20 (2021) "This book is overall of great relevance to anyone interested in Chinese youth, and state-society relations in contemporary China more broadly. And while the core of the book centers on the Hu Jintao era, the author develops in the introduction and conclusion exciting observations about the changes that took place under Xi Jinping."- Jérôme Doyon, Journal of Chinese Political Science (2021) "Overall, this book makes a major contribution to research on youth organisations and the status of youth in contemporary Chinese society. [...] The qualitative data and insights into this organisation will be useful for researchers who are interested in youth politics in China and political apathy among young people in authoritarian states in general." - Zheyu Shang, Europe-Asia Studies, Vol. 74, Iss. 6 "This book is an excellent source for understanding the operation of the CYL under Hu Jintao’s leadership. Most of the other works on this subject are in Chinese, and their authors tend not to use field interviews, but rather to base their research on secondary or official sources." - Wen-Hsuan Tsai, Pacific Affairs, Feb 2023Table of ContentsAcknowledgments List of tables Chapter 1: Introduction Scope and importance of the study The challenge: reversing the legacy of an uneasy relationship Enter Hu Jintao: "Keep the Party Assured and the Youth Satisfied" Beyond dependency: "Youth" as a junior political subject Researching the League Organization of the book Chapter 1 references Chapter 2: "Juniority" and the generational subordination of party youth organizations Circumventing dependency: cadre agency and responsiveness Youth leagues and generational politics Generational subordination and juniority Chapter 2 references Chapter 3: The League on Campus Joining the League Grassroots League Committees and Cadres League Activities on Campus The View from Below: The League's Evaluation by Students Conclusion Chapter 3 references Chapter 4: The League in the workplace Locating "Youth" and the League in the Chinese workplace Deregulated labor and League membership "Building the League through building the Party" The League's activities: between the party committee and the management Serving and representing young employees Conclusion Chapter 4 references Chapter 5: Training Youth Cadres Organizational aspirations and personnel realities The Central League School: training generalist cadres The League School at the grassroots Improving training at the local level Personnel exchange and recognition programs Conclusion Chapter 5 references Chapter 6 - In Search of Responsiveness Youth Work Norms Serving youth in practice Relations with social organizations Conclusion Chapter 6 references Conclusion: From Hu to Xi The League as a dependent and junior organization The League under Xi: factional considerations or a new mission? Book SynopsisThe Yale-China Association's long legacy of work in China places it among the premier American organizations engaged in international service. Founded in 1901, Yale-China built on a long tradition of Yale's graduates founding churches, schools, and colleges in far-flung places. In time, the organization evolved into a bicultural educational enterprise, reflecting a spirit of intellectual tolerance and openness that adapted itself to China's changing conditions and needs. From its earliest years at the close of the Qing dynasty through wars, revolutions, and the modern era of reform, Yale-China's history was interwoven with China's own turbulent journey to find its place in the modern world. At certain points in its history, Yale-China was ahead of its time; at others, the organization was overwhelmed by social and political forces beyond its control or comprehension. Yale-China's history thus provides intriguing insights into the vagaries and complexities of America's interaction with China in the twentieth century, as well as the profound ambivalence with which many Chinese viewed the United States-its representatives, educational models, and intentions toward China-in this period.

Book SynopsisThis book explores the development of late 19th century study societies in China against the context of the decline of the imperial Qing government and its control on ideological production, widespread social unrest, and intrusions by Western imperialist states. The author uncovers the history of civil society activism in China by examining the study societies in Shanghai, Beijing, and Hunan, which were organized around the goal of promoting and defending the Confucian religion. Illustrating a facet of the civil society that emerged in China as a reaction to the influences of Christianity, the modernization of Confucianism, and nationalist state formation, this study extends understanding of the unique and complex processes of Chinese political and cultural modernization in ways that differed from that of Western societies.
