Book SynopsisUltramarathon Man is the story of where it all began for Dean Karnazes: the mind-boggling adventures of his nonstop treks through the shoe-melting inferno of Death Valley, the lung-freezing ferocity of the South Pole, and the awe-inspiring beauty of the towering peaks and craggy canyons of the Sierra Nevada. With an insight and candour rarely seen in sports memoirs, he uncovers how he merges the solitary, manic, self-absorbed life of hard-core ultrarunning with a full-time job, a wife and two children, and how running has made him who he is today: a man with an ironclad body, a teenager's energy and a champion's wisdom. In this updated and revised edition of the sportswriting classic, Karnazes has added an afterword full of lessons learned. He gives personal details on the essential pillars of health - fitness, diet and sleep. What does he eat, what supplements does he take, what kind of mattress does he sleep on? Ageing well takes work and the man who hasn't stopped for three decades is now sharing the tips and learnings that have helped him keep going, mile after gruelling mile.Trade Review[Karnazes'] spirited memoir...can help mere mortals who want to push past their perceived limits or simply jump-start their sedentary lives. * Chicago Tribune *Heart-stopping stuff * The Economist *Full of euphoric highs...a journey into distance running that is much less about sweat than about the emotional terrain that unfolds at the frontier of endurance. * New York Times *An exhibition of unadulterated courage and mental and physical stamina [for] anyone who likes to read about ordinary people doing extraordinary things. * Boston Globe *Table of Contents1: The Long Road to Santa Cruz 2: The Formative Years 3: Run with Your Heart 4: Run for Your Life 5: Soiling of the Lexus 6: Leaving Normal 7: Over the Mountains and Through the Woods 8: King of Pain 9: Into Darkness 10: Forever Changed 11: Badwater 12: Frozen Stiff 13: The Ultra-Endurance World 14: The Relay 15: Crossing Over 16: Team Dean 17: Run for the Future 18: The Gift of Life

But, with so much information out there, how do we choose a way of eating that is right for us?More Fuel You is a clear and authoritative guide to making the most of your nutrition. Leading sports dietitian Renee McGregor looks at fuelling needs for sporting participation, training and competition, and analyses some popular diet options, including low-carbohydrate, vegan and intermittent fasting. But this is not just another sports nutrition book. Renee recommends a holistic view: by understanding the human body and being self-aware, you can find the ideal nutritional approach for you personally. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn It for the Long Run is ultrarunner Damian Hall’s story of running a first marathon aged thirty-six, dressed as a toilet, and representing Great Britain four years later. His midlife-crisis running problem escalated to 100-mile ultramarathons and record-breaking bimbles, culminating in his 261-mile Pennine Way run in July 2020.In 1989, Mike Hartley set a record/Fastest Known Time (FKT) for the Pennine Way, running Britain’s oldest National Trail in two days and seventeen hours, without stopping for sleep. Hartley’s record stood for thirty-one years, until two attempts were made on it in two weeks in the summer of 2020. First, American John Kelly broke Hartley’s record by thirty-four minutes. Then Hall knocked another three hours off Kelly’s time.Hall used his record-bothering run to highlight concerns for our climate and ecological emergency: his attempt was carbon negative, he created no plastic waste, and he and his pacing runners collected litter as they went, while also raising money for Greenpeace. A vegan, Hall used no animal products on his attempt. Scrawled on his arm in permanent marker was ‘F F F’, standing for Family, Friends, Future.Packed with dry wit and humour, In It for the Long Run tells of Hall’s nine-year preparation for his attempt, and of the run itself. He also gives us an autobiographical insight into the deranged, custard-splattered, hedgehog-dodging world of ultramarathon running and record attempts.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn enlightening biography and gripping sports narrative that takes us behind the scenes into the lives of some of the world’s most elite runners in Kenya and their coach, Patrick Sang. "I highly recommend this book." —Meb KeflezighiAt a secluded training camp in Kaptagat, Kenya, a small town nearly 8,000 feet above sea level in the Great Rift Valley, three-dozen world-class runners, including Olympic champions, world record holders and the fastest marathoner of all-time, share simple dormitory-style rooms and endure grueling workouts six days a week. These determined, devoted, and selfless runners are who they are because of a man named Patrick Sang. One of the greatest—and least-heralded coaches in the sport—Sang is described by his athletes as a “life coach.” In We Share the Sun, Sarah Gearhart takes us inside this high-octane world of elites of which few are even aware of and even fewer have ever seen. We are immersed in Sang’s remarkable story, from his college days in the US to winning an Olympic medal in the steeplechase, and his journey to become a man who redefines what coaching means. There is no singular secret to athletic success, but, as readers will learn, Sang’s holistic philosophy is like no other approach in the world. It is rooted in developing athletes who can navigate the pressures of elite competition—and life itself. In these pages, we explore Sang’s influence on his athletes — including his unique and longstanding relationship with marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge — as they prepared for the delayed Tokyo Olympics and other competitions. We witness the remarkable recovery of two-time New York City Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor after a freak accident as he strove to earn his first Olympic medal. And we follow one of the world’s most dominant mid-distance runners, Faith Kipyegon, as she attempted a historic repeat title in the 1,500 meters three years after the birth of her first child. We Share the Sun brings forth the remarkable lives and stories of East African runners, whose stories are seldom shared. Through Gearhart's vivid prose, we experience the richness that exists in Kenya as we come as close as we possibly can to running alongside a current and future generation of elites—and the man who molds them into champions.Trade Review"An engaging book for those who want to explore the structural, social, and relational foundations of Kenyan elite marathoners. Compelling and accessible, I found Gearhart’s guidance through this world captivating." * Nicholas Triolo, Outside *"Gifted sports journalist Gearhart’s account of the fabulous success of Kenyan distance runners focuses on Sang and his world-class training program. Gearhart shares rare insight into the coach and his methods, which emphasize helping runners achieve their full athletic potential as well as developing them into humans with a 'strong moral compass.' Running fans and coaches will surely draw inspiration from this humble coach who rewards effort, imparts life lessons, and shares uplifting holistic philosophy.” -- Booklist, starred review "A fascinating ode to all a coach can offer beyond holding the stopwatch. Eliud Kipchoge calls Patrick Sang a ‘life coach,’ a man who confesses to speaking in parables and who sees his job being to shape the whole person, not just the athlete. Like Sang’s coaching vision, this book contains wisdom that extends far beyond the track." -- Michael Crawley, author of Out of Thin Air: Running Wisdom and Magic from Above the Clouds in Ethiopia“By turns moving and insightful, We Share the Sun is the fascinating story of one of the world’s greatest coaches as well as a window into rural Kenya and how the way of life has given rise to one of the most dominant sporting cultures on the planet. Patrick Sang is a man full of wisdom and compassion. It’s a joy to read his story.” -- Adharanand Finn, author of Running with the Kenyans and The Rise of the Ultra Runners“‘Life is like water poured on the ground. It naturally finds its course.’ Patrick Sang’s life journey as a humble and hard-working man who gives back is beautifully illustrated, and I highly recommend the book.” -- Meb Keflezighi, Four-time Olympian, New York City and Boston Marathon Champion, and New York Times bestselling author"More than his staggering success as a coach, it’s Patrick Sang’s thoughtful approach to personal development—to finding each athlete’s Why—that shines through in Gearhart’s charming and deeply reported account.” -- Alex Hutchinson, Ph.D., National Magazine Award-winning journalist, author of Endure: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance"In prose as elegant as the strides of the athletes she describes, Sarah Gearhart takes us deep within the monastic world of elite Kenyan runners and their mentor Patrick Sang. Her unhurried inspection brings to life the determination, dedication, and urgency to succeed. It’s a captivating study of striving at the highest level and will inspire anyone to press on no matter the challenges that confront them.” -- Toni Reavis, U.S. broadcaster, writer and recipient of the George Hirsch Journalism Award"Sarah Gearhart unravels the secrets behind the coaching of the best athletes in the world. Anyone who cares about performing at your best should read this book. The stories are captivating, and the lessons are invaluable.” -- Steve Magness, world-renowned performance coach and author of The Science of Running and Do Hard Things“I enjoyed reading Sarah Gearhart’s We Share the Sun about Coach Patrick Sang’s leadership role in Kenyan athletics. It was interesting to learn how Sang’s experiences while a scholarship college student in the US influenced him, especially the strong bond with his own coach. Gearhart reveals Coach Sang’s discipline with his athletes alongside the emphasis on hard work. Runners can learn so much from this book!” -- Bill Rodgers, Olympian, four-time winner of the Boston marathon, four-time consecutive winner of the New York City marathon"The great Eliud Kipchoge is a man without equal in the sport of running. Or so I thought before I read We Share the Sun, Sarah Gearhart’s captivating biography of Kipchoge’s charismatic longtime coach Patrick Sang.” -- Matt Fitzgerald, author of On Pace, 80/20 Running and Running the Dream

It is about the challenges we face in life, and how we measure up to them. It is about companionship, endurance, ambition, hope, conviction, determination, self-respect and inspiration. It is about how we choose to live our lives, and what it means to share our values with other people. In this year-long memoir, which might be described as a historian's take on Haruki Murakami's What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, the celebrated historian Ian Mortimer considers the meaning of running as he approaches his fiftieth birthday. There is a raw honesty at the heart of Good for a Girl * The Times *I tore through Lauren Fleshman's Good for a Girl. This is the book we've been waiting for: a coming-of-age story, told from inside our broken sports system-a system that was not built for the young athletes inside it, and certainly not for young women. Lauren's story is clear-eyed, passionate, nuanced, and unflinching; it will change the way you look at sports -- Kate Fagan, author of What Made Maddy RunThis book breaks open the door for caged conversations to protect the health and integrity of growing athletes. It not only needs to be in the hands of women-identifying athletes, but also their peers, coaches, and parents. It is the invitation to have a long overdue conversation for a long overdue cultural shift -- Alysia Montaño, Olympian, co-founder of &Mother, and author of Feel-Good FitnessWomen's sports have needed a manifesto for a very long time, and with Lauren Fleshman's Good for a Girl we finally have one -- Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers and David and GoliathGood for a Girl is much more than a great running memoir. It's a remarkably candid tale of self-doubt and self-belief; of entrepreneurship, family, money, competition, and-importantly-female physiology. (Turns out women are not just smaller men!) It's an important book that also happens to be a page-turner -- David Epstein, bestselling author of Range and The Sports GeneGood for a Girl is simultaneously a moving memoir and a call to action in how we think about-and train-girls and women in elite sports. It's a must-read-for anyone who loves running, for anyone who has a daughter, and for anyone who cares about creating a better future for young women -- Emily Oster, author of Expecting Better, Cribsheet, and The Family FirmIf someone held a gun to my head and said 'Run,' I'd say, 'Nah, just shoot me.' And yet I could not put down Lauren Fleshman's thoughtful, elegant memoir: a necessary look at what women endure and deserve from the sports they devote their lives to -- Ariel Levy, author of The Rules Do Not ApplyPart memoir, part critique of a sports system built around a man's body, Fleshman offers a searingly candid look at her own victimhood and complicity, interlaced with compelling data and concrete ideas on how we can change this environment . . . Fleshman is an undeniably masterful storyteller, owning her own complicity in the system while holding others accountable, in a loving and nuanced way * Women's Running *Good for a Girl is in part a memoir of Fleshman's failures and successes, but it's also a call to action for the coaches, parents, and young women of future athletic generations. Fleshman argues convincingly that it's essential for the sports world to disentangle physical suffering from self-worth. In 288 funny, honest, and sometimes-wrenching pages, she makes clear that empowering girls to better understand the need for balance between pain and elite performance is not only the ethical thing to do - it's essential to their health and career longevity * Atlantic *Punchy, pacy and eye-opening, Good For A Girl is a book that needed to be written, and that needs to be read by anyone involved in women's sport * Adharanand Finn, author of The Rise of the Ultra Runners *Lauren Fleshman's Good for a Girl is a lyrical, insightful, and timely meditation on women's sports, women's bodies, and the fundamental issues of social justice exposed and unsolved in the world of elite athletics. As someone who finds no joy in movement, I was moved and riveted from start to finish. A must-read for anybody -- Kate Manne, author of Down Girl and EntitledLauren Fleshman serves as a guide to two worlds unknown to most of us: elite athletics, but also, and more importantly, the unjust system that gifts men with riches and fame but crushes the hopes and bodies of women. She is both a champion and a survivor, and anyone who cares about running, athletics, or women must listen to her -- Peter Sagal, host of Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me! and author of The Incomplete Book of RunningLauren Fleshman fills us with righteous fury for the way women's sport has treated its athletes, and then offers us hope for the future. I finished this invigorating book feeling that I could take on the world - and that I had been handed some tools to get me started * Emily Chappell, author of What Goes Around and Where There's a Will *A moving coming-of-age memoir . . . The fast-paced, smoothly written narrative will resonate with student-athletes and is highly recommended for everyone involved with female athletes, from coaches to parents. Book SynopsisWINNER OF THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD 2023A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERA FINANCIAL TIMES BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR 2023 Good for a Girl is a joyful love letter to the running life, a raw personal narrative of growth and change, and gives voice to the often-silent experience of the female athleteLauren Fleshman was of the most decorated collegiate athletes of all time and a national champion as a pro, before becoming a coach for elite young female runners. Every step of the way, she has seen how our sports systems fail young women and girls as much as empower them. Part memoir, part manifesto, Good for a Girl is Fleshman''s story of falling in love with running as a girl, battling devastating injuries and self-doubt, and daring to fight for a better way for female athletes.''Women''s sports have needed a manifesto for a long time. The rawness of Good for a Girl serves as a push to demand that the next crop of female athletes has it better * Washington Post *Fleshman manages to deliver a sporting manifesto while also being a fine and engaging writer ... Fleshman is a role model unafraid to share her vulnerability and advocate for gender equality * Booklist, STARRED REVIEW *A superb memoir . . . Book SynopsisRachel Toor was a bookish egghead who ran only to catch a bus. How such an unlikely athlete became a runner of ultramarathons is the story of Personal Record, an exhilarating meditation on the making, and the minutiae, of a runner's life. The food, the clothes, the races, the injuries, and the watch are all essential to the runner, as readers discover here, and discover why.Trade Review“Personal Record takes you on a grand tour of the running life, which goes from hobby to one of the purest forms that fanaticism in sport can take—ultramarathons. As any great running book deserves, Rachel Toor’s writing is swift, disciplined, sinewy, and indomitably strong. It is also hilarious. The story she tells is a marvel.”—Pat Conroy, author of My Losing Season and The Prince of Tides“In an unconventional, inspirational, and loving account of running, really well done and funny as heck, Rachel Toor shows how this simple activity is so powerful it sweeps us off our feet into friendships that endure. I'm a fan.”—Bill Rodgers, four-time winner of both the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon and owner of the Bill Rodgers Running Center“Readers who have thought about taking up running but have kept putting it off will discover that Toor has deftly taken away all of their excuses, from ‘I don’t have time’ to ‘I’m too out of shape’ to ‘It’ll hurt too much.’ A book that will appeal equally to novices and experienced runners.”—Booklist“A finely written ode to the art, the trial, the lifestyle of marathon running. Toor, an experienced runner, has the ability to take you inside that niche world and make it real.”—Reader’s Digest"In her new essay collection, Personal Record, Toor immerses the reader in the world of long-distance running, examining her bruised, muscular body, the contents of her closet, her pantry jammed with energy gels and protein bars, and her love life in the process of explaining what running means to her and describing the experiences the sport has given her."—Jenny Shank, New West“Rachel Toor makes me want to be a runner. . . . Book SynopsisAnthropologist Jasmina Praprotnik met Helena Zigon while running. Over the course of an icy Slovenian winter, the two marathon runners got together frequently, and Zigon told Praprotnik about her life. Here, Praprotnik tells Zigon's captivating story in Zigon's own voice. Each chapter is marked by a kilometer of the half-marathon Zigon ran...Trade Review"Helena Zigon's story has already captured the minds and hearts of readers in Slovenia and will assuredly do the same with English-language readers. The book is a testament to the beauty of Zigon as well as the powerful nature of humanistic writing."—Christine Worobec, author of Possessed: Women, Witches, and Demons in Imperial Russia (NIU Press, 2001) "This original book combines a specialist's story, written by someone who has made a career of inspiring people to run, with the biography of a remarkable woman, who ran her way through the twentieth century. It will be a delight for anyone interested in a life well-lived, as well as anyone with an interest, competitive or recreational, in running and what it can do not only for the body, but for the soul."—Noah Charney, author of The Art Thief "Praprotnik's narrative, crafted from interviews with the legendary Slovenian runner, uses each kilometer of the Istrian half-marathon as a chapter marker, weaving together the course of an amazing life with that of a grueling race. It is a compelling, inspirational, and humbling story."—Amy Nelson, author of Music for the Revolution: Musicians and Power in Early Soviet Russia "To say that the story of Helena Zigon's life is inspiring would be a vast understatement. As told to her fellow Slovenian runner Jasmina Kozina Praprotnik, a first-time author, Zigon achieves a rare feat, delivering a compelling tale of relentless perseverance without a hint of self-aggrandizement. Zigon's demonstration of athletic prowess is all the more astonishing for having continued well into old age. 'I am not so young anymore,' the octogenarian marathoner says, with disarming candor. 'I just have to make sure that I run with moderation and wisdom.' As she does so, mile after exhausting mile, Zigon ruminates on her life's highs and lows, among them her mother's abandonment of a young Helena. 'What would she have said if she had seen how fast I was, if she had seen me win?' Zigon wonders wistfully. 'Would she have been proud of me?' Readers of The Long Running Life of Helene Zigon will doubtless identify with this remarkable woman's yearnings."—Nick Madigan, correspondent for The New York Times "This masterfully told story of marathon runner Helena Zigon is an authentic portrait of a woman who has found joy and peace in running-engrossing, insightful, and heartwarming."—Kate Padilla, contributor to Weavin' chapbooks and Hers: A Poets Speak Anthology "This is a luminous and inspiring account. Praprotnik's book is full of wisdom about how running-in life's toughest times-can be one's salvation. I will feel Helena Zigon's courageous spirit on my morning runs along the Slovenian coast."—Joji Sakurai, journalist published in Financial Times, New York Times, New Statesman, and Foreign Policy

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewPraise for The Incomplete Book of Running "Sagal is a very good runner . . . and a very good writer. He is clever, warm, funny and engaging." —The Washington Post “The Incomplete Book of Running has been a loyal companion. It’s funny, well written . . . filled with humility and perpetually on the scan for moments of stray grace. . . . I would go for a run with Sagal anytime." —Dwight Garner, The New York Times “Sagal is brilliant and accomplished, but he’s also self-deprecating and funny. . . . Full of irreverence . . . Sagal is not here to make you faster, but he’ll make you smile, reflect and perhaps take the holiest of actions: those first scary steps out the door.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune "Entertaining and poignant." —Chicago Sun-Times “With exceptional wit and self-deprecating humor . . . Sagal is a compelling writer, and his story may well rouse some to get off the couch, lace up their sneakers, and get running.” —Booklist "By turns beautiful and moving, and laced with plenty of Sagal’s signature wry humor." —MyFitnessPal Blog "Full of rich observations." —Chicago Magazine "Anyone who’s ever run for fitness, for fun (are there people who do that?), for recreation, or to be a better person will appreciate Peter Sagal’s The Incomplete Book of Running. . . . In addition to taking the reader along on some races and training runs, and giving insight into the importance of a supportive running group and good nutrition, Sagal entertains with sprinklings of fascinating research. . . . The book is full of wonderful cultural references, and Sagal is creative in drawing from diverse sources to stitch together his running philosophy." —Washington Independent Review of Books "Hilarious and poignant." —BuzzFeed“Sagal has created a new genre—the five-minute-mile memoir. Combining commentary and reflection about running with a deeply felt personal story, this book is winning, smart, honest, and affecting. Whether you are a runner or not, it will move you.” —Susan Orlean “This is a brilliant book about running, and it’s brilliant even if you never have—and never want to—move faster than a shuffle. Ostensibly, Peter’s subject is the physical activity itself. (Feh, as far as I’m concerned.) In fact the book is a manifesto on the redemption of escape. And, even more so, a meditation on the direction of flight. Whatever you’re running from, you’re running to something else. What Peter runs toward is strength, understanding, endurance, acceptance, faith, hope, and charity.” —P. J. O’Rourke “Peter Sagal is the funniest person on radio (quick reminder, I am on television). I enjoy listening to Peter on Wait, Wait . . . Don’t Tell Me! on the weekend while chopping vegetables for soup. It will be nearly impossible to do that while reading this book, so if someone could bring me some carrots and onions in half-inch dice, that’d be great.” —Stephen Colbert “Peter Sagal’s insightful and open-hearted book about running will make you wish he was your long run buddy. This book not only demonstrates the ways in which running shapes a life, but also how life, in all its beauty and pain, shapes the run. I loved it.” —Lauren Fleshman “Look, everything Peter Sagal says he knows is written on an index card supplied to him by a member of his staff. If he, himself, wrote any kind of guide to running, it’d be incomplete.” —Tom Hanks
