  • Southern Way Special Issue No. 20

Crecy Publishing Southern Way Special Issue No. 20

Book SynopsisViewed from over seven decades later the Isle of Wight at the start of the 1950s might at first glance appear to have been experiencing a golden age of railways. A real-life Island of Sodor where Victorian steam locomotives crisscrossed the Island from Cowes in the north to Ventnor in the south, and from Freshwater in the west to Bembridge in the east. Even the smallest of villages could claim its own station and the only cloud on the horizon was generated by the passing of a nearby train. Or was it?The truth of course was rather different. From as early as 1950 - over a decade before Beeching - rumours abounded that the entire network might be at risk of closure. In the event the loss of the Ventnor West branch in 1952 would be the first of several routes to be axed over the next few years, with around two thirds of the Island''s network having closed by the end of the decade. Further closures would of course follow in the 1960s. In the meantime, the pages of the Isle of Wight County Press abounded with proposals for how the Island''s antiquated railways could be saved, revitalised and modernized - all of them doomed to failure and one so bizarre it was described as like ''something from H. G. Wells.''In this book, the author provides an overview of the Isle of Wight''s railways during the 1950s. Were the closures inevitable and what were the arguments for and against? This fascinating survey of the Isle of Wight''s railways in their post war heyday contains around 130 photographs, many of them previously unpublished.

  • On Photography

    Penguin Books Ltd On Photography

Book SynopsisSusan Sontag''s On Photography is a seminal and groundbreaking work on the subject.Susan Sontag''s groundbreaking critique of photography asks forceful questions about the moral and aesthetic issues surrounding this art form. Photographs are everywhere, and the ''insatiability of the photographing eye'' has profoundly altered our relationship with the world. Photographs have the power to shock, idealize or seduce, they create a sense of nostalgia and act as a memorial, and they can be used as evidence against us or to identify us. In these six incisive essays, Sontag examines the ways in which we use these omnipresent images to manufacture a sense of reality and authority in our lives.''Sontag offers enough food for thought to satisfy the most intellectual of appetites''The Times''A brilliant analysis of the profound changes photographic images have made in our way of looking at the world, and at ourselves''Washington Post''The most original and illuminating study of the subject''New YorkerOne of America''s best-known and most admired writers, Susan Sontag was also a leading commentator on contemporary culture until her death in December 2004. Her books include four novels and numerous works of non-fiction, among them Regarding the Pain of Others, On Photography, Illness as Metaphor, At the Same Time, Against Interpretation and Other Essays and Reborn: Early Diaries 1947-1963, all of which are published by Penguin. A further eight books, including the collections of essays Under the Sign of Saturn and Where the Stress Falls, and the novels The Volcano Lover and The Benefactor, are available from Penguin Modern Classics.

  • Children of Las Vegas: True stories about growing

Unbound Children of Las Vegas: True stories about growing

Book SynopsisOver forty million people a year travel to Vegas, more than to Mecca. It is a global celebrity, an improbable oasis, a place offering bank-breaking fortunes and instant gratification, 24/7, with no moral debits. Award-winning writer Timothy O’Grady lived in Vegas for two years. He finally began to understand it when he talked to people who had grown up there, the children of the card dealers and cocktail shakers, the jugglers and the dancers – young people who had been bearing witness to this strange city all their lives. One had her student loans and credit card limits stolen by her father. Another fled a sequence of exploiters until she found herself living in the storm drains under the casinos. There is the boy whose father entered him into a drinking contest when he was eight, the casino owner’s son, the erudite contortionist turned stripper. Each tells their own tale.In Children of Las Vegas, O’Grady renews his partnership with renowned photographer Steve Pyke. Through short essays, Pyke’s portraits and ten witness testimonies, he pierces the city’s glittering façade to reveal the darker reality that lies beneath.Trade Review'These are brave, honest, articulate stories, the children wise beyond their years . . . Crecy Publishing Railways Remembered The Western Region 19621972

Book SynopsisBlake Paterson was both a career railwayman and a railway enthusiast who worked for the Western Region, based at Paddington and Reading. He was also a passionate and very accomplished photographer. Aware of the great changes to the railway network which were underway, even before the publication of Dr Beeching''s notorious report, he resolved to record as much of the changing railway scene, as was possible. To do this, he set himself demanding schedules and would often travel great distances, sometimes using overnight trains, to reach the more remote corners of the network. During this intense period of photographic activity he took thousands of images, normally only taking a photo when the sun was shining and aiming to capture the trains in picturesque settings. He sought innovative angles and unlike many railway photographers of the era, he made a particular point of including people, particularly railway employees, in his photographs. It is believed that none of the images in this

Book SynopsisIn the dusk hours of a November evening in 2020, James Crombie set out for the shore of Lough Ennell, Co. Westmeath with no goal except to find a brief reprieve from the chaos of modern life. One of Ireland?s most lauded sports photographers, Crombie had spent months each year travelling the globe, snapping glimpses of sporting glory amid roaring crowds. Once the pandemic arrived however, he found himself suspended in an unfamiliar moment of stillness, where his focus could roam beyond the pitch. When a close friend came to him in a moment of grief, the pair made for the lake. What Crombie found on the shore that evening - an undulating murmuration of starlings, dancing above the surface of the water - would change his life forever.Desperate to capture the beauty of the murmurations, and to better understand this phenomenon and the surroundings of the lake itself, Crombie began a four-year journey, travelling to lake shore for over 100 days per year. In his efforts to capture the formations of the magical birds, Crombie managed to chart the stunning natural cycles of the lake and the surrounding countryside. An incredible combination of narrative and photography, this is a book about one man?s quest to capture the beauty of an Irish natural phenomenon, and about how our local environments harbour a wealth of beauty and complexity, if only we?re able to look closely enough. The book also features an introduction by pioneering ornithologist Seán Ronayne.
