The first is when they are already accomplished woodworkers and they see the building of a canoe as a development of their interests and skills. The second is when they have little knowledge of woodworking but have an interest in and possibly a better than average knowledge of canoes. This book has been written with both types of reader in mind; it contains a single project with a number of variations. After a brief introduction and a discussion about safety issues, Chapter 2 begins with an examination of some of the variations which are possible in canoe design. For example, the bottom of the canoe may be flat or rounded and it may be built with or without a keel. Four profiles are suggested: General Purpose, White Water, Streamlined and Freighter. I can check off skydiving, writing a book, and a few others that I've counted myself fortunate enough to complete, but still there are more. I grew up in Florida, and I was lucky enough to have access to a number of rivers, a few bayous, and, of course, the Gulf of Mexico. During my high school days, one of my favorite summer activities was canoeing. I spent many days on Coldwater River or Blackwater River either with friends or solo (often on an ocean kayak because it was lighter and more fun to me). I will never forget one summer day by myself on Coldwater (frigid water year round) when I quietly rounded a bend on the water and came face-to-face with a mother bobcat that had come out from the woods with her two babies to drink from the river. She looked at me and gave the scariest deep growl/screech I'd ever heard - I think I almost flipped my canoe trying to get back out into the center of the river. She scurried away, but my heart was pounding an hour later. Another time I was out by myself was right after some major storms. I would often show up at the canoe outfitter north of town around 8am or 9am to get on the river before the crowds. On this particular day, I had asked them to drop me off about 15 miles north of the outfitter's final stop, considered The Day Trip. Probably thirty minutes down the river, I ran into a series of downed trees that completely crossed the river, forcing me to climb out of the canoe while standing on foot wide tree trunks. The tree line was too thick to try to go around the trees by pulling the canoe through the woods, so I was forced to carefully pull, push, and slide the canoe and my supplies over three or four trees that moved up and down in the water under my weight. When I finished the route about 7 or 8 hours later, I informed the outfitter about the trees and was told they'd dropped off about 30 other people at the same starting point, many with larger coolers and kids. Bad day for canoers. I haven't been canoeing in a few years, but I've got two boys, ages 2 and 5, who I hope will get a chance to do some canoeing on those same rivers someday. But before I take them, one thing I've always wanted to do is to build my own canoe. Specifically, a cedar strip canoe. I'm thinking an 18 foot flat hull might be nice for a trip with the boys. Maybe even a few handmade paddles to match. But I'm getting ahead of myself first, I need to actually figure out how to build one. And for that, I'm going to be eternally grateful to Gil Gilpatrick. Gil's been a guide in Maine for over 30 years, having carried his share of tourists down rivers galore. But it's not his river skills that I need right now (although he's got those in spades). What I need are his detailed instructions for constructing my own canoe, all covered in his book, Building A Strip Canoe, 2nd Edition. Before I tell you a bit more about this book, let me tell you that I've spent hours and hours hunting down techniques and discussions on the Internet related to building canoes. There's a lot out there, believe me. You'll find dozens of differing techniques and conflicting advice. It's a mess out there. But if you pay careful attention to many commenters and builders and check out who they often refer back to it's Gil Gilpatrick. When I started noticing his name on many websites, I quickly discovered that many canoe builders who have documented their own builds used the instructions provided by Gilpatrick. Be aware that many of Gilpatrick's earlier books, including the first edition to this book, are difficult to find or expensive to obtain. I tell you this only because if you ever think you might want to build your own canoe, now is the time to grab a copy of this book before it too becomes difficult to find. This one is in full color, and it even comes with removable templates in the back of the book for cutting out the patterns used to shape the eight different canoes he covers in this single book. It's a large sized book, too, so you won't be squinting at the photos wondering about any particular step. I've been mulling over building my own canoe for a little over a year now, and I've finally decided to do it. (My wife reads my posts, so I imagine as she's reading this she's shaking her head and considering calling her attorney.) I've got the space in my garage ready. I've got all the tools minus one (a router table fence for doing the bead/cove on the cedar strips - call my dad, Ashley, and he'll tell you the correct fence I need for my upcoming birthday). And I've read the book probably five or six times now, so I'm confident in the order of the process. The only part that makes me nervous is the fiberglass portion of the project, and I plan on practicing on scrap before I approach the real hull. Building a Strip Canoe covers everything - safety, prep work and supply assembly, building the backbone (the frame you'll first need to build along with the patterns from the included templates) that will provide your canoe support as you glue, staple, and form your canoe. And while I'm not 100% convinced that just anyone can build a canoe, I'll be the first to admit (as a technical writer by trade) that the instructions Gilpatrick provides are the clearest I could imagine, and after reading the book just once I knew that it contained the right details for me to follow along. I'm comfortable working with wood and many of the tools required, but I believe that even a novice with the right help (and maybe a friend with a table saw and some time) can build a canoe. Gilpatrick covers it all, including putting together authentic cane seating and paddles as well as a list of specialty supply vendors (in case you live somewhere that doesn't offer access to the fiberglass/epoxy materials and even the wood). This is really the only book you'll need should you decide you want to now (or ever) build your own canoe. Great Book of Wooden Toys was originally published in 1986 by American Woodworker and this revised edition has new color photos and the instructions and plans have been updated. There are plans for making Trucks, Airplanes, Boats and Trains. If you're in the market to make toys for your kids or grandkids (or anyone else) this looks like a book for you. Personally, I like the trains the best! This book was first published in 1986 and has recently been revised for the current generation of hobbyists and woodworkers. The author, Norm Marshall, passed away twenty-eight years ago, but this volume contains the designs for all of the wooden toys he created during his lifetime. Marshall takes a low key, common sense approach to toy making, suggesting, for example, that they can be built with hand tools and a few handyman power tools, while noting that the addition of other power tools can facilitate the building. Similarly, he takes a scrounger's approach to materials relying not only on wood from the local home centre or lumberyard but also abandoned furniture, flea market finds and so on. Although on first glance, his toys look fairly simple, they are in fact quite sophisticated and require a fair degree of skill and talent to get them right. There's plenty of measuring, shaping, gluing, assembling and finishing to be done for each toy; enough to challenge the average beginner to intermediate woodworker. There are plans, pictures, instructions and materials lists for over fifty wooden toys, including a F16 jet fighter, the Spirit of St. Louis trans-Atlantic airplane, a working crane, a Model T car, and a train with various cars. I was pleased to see that since these toys are meant to be played with, the instructions have been updated to include the latest information on non-toxic materials and finishes. Although they are not designed exactly to scale, they do not exhibit the chunkiness of many wooden toys. These models have a sleek, contemporary look to them. If I have one reservation about the book, it's that the projects seem geared more towards boys than girls. Perhaps it's a reflection of the times when these toys were designed, but the majority of these toys would be traditionally considered 'boy's toys' (e.g. trains, planes, boats, cars, and industrial equipment). Nevertheless, the enduring popularity of wooden toys and these in particular is a testament to the fun that kids have playing with them and that adults have making them. Who doesn't love a good ol' wooden toy to play with? Norm Marshall's book, Great Book of Wooden Toys, provides a variety of plans for a number of vehicles for the air, land, and sea. Also included in the projects are some cute little animals that can be linked together. What I especially enjoyed with this book is the extensive amount of information in the Preface regarding wood selection, safety issue (for the children who will be enjoying these toys) and some basic "how to" information that is used for the projects. Being a relative beginner at woodworking I also appreciate the options that are provided throughout the pages. For example, he suggests that you can use his hole-saw process for making the wheels or you can cut them out freehand, use a lathe or even purchase them ready made. How's that for covering all the bases! This same "options" input is provided for a number of topics, including wood selection and finishes. Love it. Each of the projects comes with a picture of the finished toy, a little information about the vehicle, an exploded view of the components of the toy, as well as detailed plans for each of the parts.The step-by-step directions are quite detailed, giving tidbits of information, warnings, and strategies to prevent problems. It's nice to learn from experience but sometimes it is even better to learn from someone else's! Due to my current schedule I wasn't able to make one of the projects this month but it's on my "to do list." The Model T car is calling my name. One of the pluses of scrollsawing is the small amount of materials needed: scrollsaw and choice of blades, clamps, sandpaper wood, drill and bits and a finish. Bingo! Not only that, but each of these projects is presented step-by-step fashion with full-scale drawings showing the fretwork involved. And it can get a trifle complicated too, particularly when creating a filigree design. While a world away from conventional boxmaking techniques, these scrollsawn boxes represent a good few evenings of fun with some most attractive results, and no-one ever said woodworking should be serious all the time. From cutting and shaping each piece to assembly and performance, the theory that only elite crafters can make wood instruments is debunked.Trade ReviewPacked with full-size patterns, step-by-step instructions - a nice departure from the usual use of photographs - you too can craft a wonderful instrument.I suspect that the book that Bruce Ossman has written, is the book he wishes he had available to him when he first fell in love with the violin while a student at Penn State University in the 1950s. It wasn't long before he self-taught himself to make his first instrument. As the sub-title of the book indicates, this book is not intended for the serious luthier making concert level instruments. Ossman's book is aimed at the average woodworker or motivated musician wishing to build a decent sounding, playable violin on his or her first attempt. The book begins with an overview of the entire 30-step building process utilizing many line drawings and sparse text. It's an excellent way to convey, to the novice builder, the violin in its deconstructed state and the logical sequence of steps necessary to pull it all together. This is followed by a gallery of color photos of the work of five makers, some amateurs and some professional. If one needs some inspiration before beginning a project, this section will provide it. The first chapter is devoted to the violin's anatomy and acoustics. Although there is enough literature on these topics alone to float a battleship, Ossman manages to cover the absolute bare-bone basics in just a few pages. The second chapter covers the materials which go into a violin as well as some of the preparatory steps necessary to build an instrument, including the fashioning of some simple tools like spool clamps, the body form and carving table. However, the discussion of tone woods, which one would expect in almost any other book on violin making, is almost non-existent here. The author's focus is definitely on construction. The heart of the book is chapter three, where Ossman takes the builder through the nuts and bolts of building a violin. He relies on a great many line drawings and straightforward text. Being so brief, there is no room for an in-depth discussions of why he opted for one method, approach, or material over any number of other options available to him. For example, the matter of finish is a topic about which countless books, articles, and scientific papers have been written, but Ossman simply instructs the builder to apply several coats of varnish with a sanding between coats. That's it. Still, he knows that if the reader follows his instructions, the end result will be a decent instrument, first time out. The appendix includes templates and full-sized plans, some of which are printed over two facing pages with the binding down the middle, but with registration marks so that when photocopied at full-size, they can be taped together. There is no instrument which is more steeped in mythology and lore than the violin, where grown men and women swear that the best instruments are made by the light of the August Moon, using 100 year old German spruce, harvested from the leeward sides of mountains and finished with shellac using some approximation of Stradivarius's mysterious recipe. Serious luthiers like these can discuss ad nauseum the merits of absolutely any aspect of the violin from the shape of the f-holes, to the types of strings used, to the glues employed, to the placement of the sound-post, and more. This is a different kind of book. For the first time builder, there is much to be said for Ossman's straightforward approach, where he has avoided many of the kinds of issues that more experienced builders delight in debating, but which might distract the novice from simply getting on with it.

I've been turning for a few years now, and every once in a while I have to mutter, "Now, how am I going to do that?" Doc Green pretty well has that question covered, and I believe anything beyond the realm of his new book may fall into the category of wild and crazy ideas. Intarsia fans will really enjoy these originals.I am giving this book on Intarsia a "4" rating not because it isn't a great book but because most of the patterns I have seen before in scroll saw magazines. (My sunflower fairy door is one example) Filled with over 30 projects, if you aren't a regular purchaser of magazines then this book would be a great resource if you are interested in doing intarsia work. Each project comes with the patterns and "how to" steps plus, a couple of the projects have an in-depth description, providing detailed intarsia and segmentation tips and strategies. What I really liked about the book is that the projects include ideas for frames as well as the typical designs. The book also has a two-page display of different woods to help select appropriate colours for the projects you are working on. Here is a book fit for kings, queens and knights and a book not to be pawned. I, with my sick humor could not work a rook into my diatribe. In any event, this is a fantastic and inspiring book for all woodworkers. In a word, unique! This is perhaps the best way of describing the contents of this book. Author Kape has a great imagination and it is well projected in this fabulous book. There are, as the cover suggests, 15 one-of-a-kind projects for the scroll saw. There is a classic and two neo-classic sets that are close to traditional but certainly unique as cut with the scrollsaw. There is also a set reminiscent of the Knights of the Round Table, a classic Greek set, a Czarist set and an Olde English set. Add these to the architectural collection like Paris, Canterbury, Venice, Rome and San Francisco and you have a fully rounded out chess set collection that is to die for. Now, if you were counting you will realize that the list is short by four. These are made up by the author's plans for a chess board, a travelling chess board, a storage box and a vertical wall mounted chess set. Kape provides the sawyer with full plans and scale drawings for all of the above as well as a full list of materials. There are full size patterns for the different pieces and the designs range from a classic or traditional set to some unique designs based on the architecture of different cities.
