Book SynopsisPresenting pathophysiology through the lens of body function, Applied Pathophysiology: A Conceptual Approach, 4th Edition, goes beyond memorization of facts to give students a thorough understanding of altered human function and a practical framework for applying concepts in clinical settings. By helping students understand that diseases are rarely confined to one body system, this novel approach conditions students to think like practitioners, working from symptom to cause to build an understanding of the disease process essential to successful practice. Supported by the latest clinical practices and research-based evidence, this 4th Edition has been updated to prepare students for today’s changing healthcare environment. Engaging features and resources throughout the text emphasize active learning strategies and challenge students to apply their knowledge to a wide range of diseases.

Book SynopsisPrepare for your future nursing career with Essentials of Pathophysiology: Concepts of Altered Health States . This clear, readable, and student-friendly text delivers “need to know” disease content along with the essential foundation in science that students need to succeed in their future careers. Approaching the topic as an exploration of pathophysiology, the book relates normal body functioning to the physiologic changes that occur as a result of disease and provides concise yet complete coverage of how the body works. Full-color Art increases understanding of key concepts showing the clinical manifestations of diseases and disease processes. Lab References are easily accessible with lists of common suffixes and prefixes, normal laboratory values in both conventional and SI units, and a comprehensive glossary. Narrated Animations , available on thePoint, bring to life the most clinically relevant and difficult to understand disorders. 5 in stock

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Neurodegeneration

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisMost textbooks on neurodegenerative disorders have used a classification scheme based upon either clinical syndromes or anatomical distribution of the pathology. In contrast, this book looks to the future and uses a classification based upon molecular mechanisms, rather than clinical or anatomical boundaries. Major advances in molecular genetics and the application of biochemical and immunocytochemical techniques to neurodegenerative disorders have generated this new approach. Throughout most of the current volume, diseases are clustered according to the proteins that accumulate within cells (e.g. tau, a-synuclein and TDP-43) and in the extracellular compartments (e.g. ß-amyloid and prion proteins) or according to a shared pathogenetic mechanism, such as trinucleotide repeats, that are a feature of specific genetic disorders. Chapters throughout the book conform to a standard lay-out for ease of access by the reader and are written by a panel Trade Review“Overall, this textbook provides useful and systematic information on the basic mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases. Book SynopsisThe interpretation of melanocytic tumors represents probably the most difficult task in the field of dermatopathology. The second edition of this text and atlas depicts a broad range of the most important and most challenging melanocytic lesions. Each individual case is illustrated with at least three high-quality color photographs and is commented on at length, highlighting the diagnostic clues. The goal of the authors is to assist the ordinary pathologist in making a precise workable diagnosis in their daily practice. They achieve this by providing simple criteria that will serve as a sound basis for an unequivocal diagnosis of either a benign or a malignant melanocytic neoplasm. The reader will find Histological Diagnosis of Nevi and Melanoma to be an invaluable guide to correct diagnosis even in difficult or rare cases.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews of the second edition:“The book provides a logical, practical classification of melanocytic lesions, using the terminology most frequently used in dermatopathology laboratories. … This is a necessary book that provides useful information for both clinicians and pathologists. … This is a unique, comprehensive source of information for melanocytic lesion histopathology, and a likely must have for pathologists, dermatopathologists, and dermatologists.” (Susan M. Book SynopsisThis book contains a compilation of high-yield, at-a-glance summaries in quick reference format for various topics that are frequently encountered by pathologists in the daily practice or on the boards. The focus is not organ-based histologic criteria, but rather everything else that goes into pathologic diagnoses but is difficult to keep committed to memory. The emphasis is on immunohistochemistry, special stains, grading systems, molecular markers, tumor syndromes, and helpful clinical references. Also included are morphologic summaries that encompass high-yield material cutting across all organ systems, such as an illustrated guide for microorganisms, tumor differentials, and an illustrated glossary of pathologic descriptors. The book has a unique format in that the information is presented primarily in tables and diagrams accompanied by brief and to-the-point explanatory text. The guiding principle was to boil the information down to the essentials but with just enough commentary to be accessible to a newcomer to pathology and to serve as a quick reference to a practicing pathologist. In the 7 years since its initial publication, there have been considerable advances in surgical pathology, particularly immunohistochemical stains, molecular diagnostics, and histologic grading schemes. In the second edition, the content has been thoroughly updated to incorporate these developments, while retaining the overall scope and concise format of the first edition. In addition, the reader will find summaries for many new topics as well as multiple new cartoon illustrations and diagrams. • Violence: Reflections on Our Deadliest Epidemic

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Violence: Reflections on Our Deadliest Epidemic

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisJames Gilligan lays the foundation for a complete re-thinking of the nature and meaning of violence in society. He reveals the motives of men who commit horrifying crimes, men who not only kill other people, but also destroy themselves rather than suffer shame and loss of self-respect.He focuses on how feelings of shame cause violent and vengeful behaviour, and argues that conventional punitive legal and penal systems which are based on notions of justice and retribution perpetuate violent behaviour. He was called in to the Massachusetts prison system because of the high rates of suicides and murders within state prisons there; when he left these rates had dropped almost to zero. This keenly argued and ground-breaking book is essential reading for everyone touched by violence, and all those who are working to prevent it and its consequencesTrade ReviewJames Gilligan has written a stunning book about violence. As a psychiatrist who has spent twenty-five years of his professional life treating men who committed murder, Gilligan draws poignantly on his work with prisoners to help us understand what motivates desperate men. In the end, he offers a compelling psychoanalytic explanation of violence while calling on society to take social, economic and cultural measures to help prevent the 'deadly epidemic' from spreading. -- Judith Friedlander, PhD., Dean of the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science, New School for Social ResearchDr. Gilligan offers a personal and passionate summing up of his decades of empathic clinical work with men who have committed horrible crimes, and he succeeds in deepening our understanding of their inner lives, the dark world of prisons they inhabit, and the violence that pervades... society. -- Donald J. Cohen, M.D., Director, Yale Child Study CenterExtraordinary. Gilligan's recommendations concerning what does work to prevent violence...are extremely convincing...A wise and careful, enormously instructive book. -- Owen Renik, M.D., editor * Psychoanalytic Quarterly *Important and absorbing...a valuable book deserving a widespread and thoughtful readership. -- Norval Morris, Boston Globe, former Dean of University of Chicago Law SchoolTable of ContentsPrologue: Violence as Tragedy. Book SynopsisFree digital access available with every print purchase. See inside the book for more details. While classification of pancreatic neoplasms has not evolved significantly since 2007, data related to the molecular underpinnings that characterize each type of neoplasm have grown exponentially in the past 15 years. The current multimodal study of pancreatic neoplasms has allowed a better understanding of tumor biology, more closely linking the mor¬phologic findings with clinical outcomes and targeted treatment. The prognosis of conventional pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma remains very poor, but some promise is on the horizon based on novel treatment approaches and the increase in earlier diagnosis. Furthermore, intensive study of other pancreatic neoplasms has led to a clearer recognition that each type has distinctive biology and behavior that is often not so highly aggressive. This sense of optimism may help drive a resurgence of interest in pancreatic pathology.
