HarperCollins Publishers 100 Posters That Changed The World
Book SynopsisA collection of the world's most memorable, provocative, best-selling and groundbreaking posters from Johannes Gutenberg to Barack Obama. Classic posters from the last 300 years and the stories behind them. Posters have always been designed to seek an immediate response. From the time when paper was first affordable, the poster has been used to provoke a direct reaction, whether a public appeal, a legal threat, a call to arms, or the offer of entertainment. Newspapers might have the advantage of ubiquity in spreading the word, but a poster could be tightly targeted by its location. Organized chronologically, 100 Posters That Changed the World charts the history of poster design from their earliest forms as a means of information communication to the more subtle visual communication of the 21st century. As printing became cheaper, posters were used for more than just promoting the capture of local villains or announcing government decrees. Advertisements took over, citing up-and-coming events, auctions, public meetings, political rallies, sports games, lectures and theatrical performances. The technological leaps from engraving to aquatints to lithography, chromolithography and the offset press, all had their impact on what could be advertised by poster, and the art form took off spectacularly in the late 19th century with the influence of Lautrec and the Paris nightclubs. From then on, the poster became a sophisticated means of visual communication. In the West it was used to sell products – in the East it was used to sell regimes and control behaviour. Along with historic moments in poster evolution, 100 Posters That Changed the World charts the most impactful designs of the last 300 years – images that communicate a message whether commercial or political, images that sell a film, a musical, a cause or used for decoration, inspiration, motivation and affirmation. The affirmation for teenagers in the 1970s that Farah Fawcett was looking at you.Trade Review'Showcase[s] an extensive collection of the images and slogans that have shaped society as we know it' -- Country Life'This engaging book is a vivid tapestry of poster styles with diverse commercial, cultural and political applications supplemented by informative single-page essays that stimulate curiosity page after page' -- Morning Star'Offer[s] a way to get to grips with history from 1880 to 1940' -- This England'This journey through images that can inspire, shock or just leave the viewer laughing is never less than fascinating... a beautifully produced volume that will find a very broad readership' -- All About History

Reaktion Books Communist Posters
Book SynopsisOne of the common features of communist regimes is the use of art for revolutionary means. Posters in particular have served as beacons of propaganda - vehicles of coercion, instruction, censure and debate - in every communist nation. They have promoted the authority of state and revolution, but have also been used as an effective means of protest. This is the first truly global survey of the history and variety of communist poster art. Each chapter is written by an expert in the field and examines a different region of the world: Russia, China, Mongolia, Eastern Europe, North Korea, Vietnam and Cuba. This beautifully illustrated, comprehensive survey will appeal to a wide audience interested in art, history and politics.Trade Review"On the centenary of the Bolshevik Revolution, Ginsberg has edited a comprehensive presentation of the often vivid propaganda that, for the eyes of hundreds of millions in a pre-social media age, celebrated and condemned the likes of Castro, Mao, Lenin, Stalin, and the apparatchiks who tried to implement their theories and schemes. . . . Over 330 illustrations demonstrate the range and the scope beyond the U.S.S.R. and the P.R.C., with chapters on Korea, Mongolia, Eastern Europe, Vietnam, and Cuba put in context with scholarly essays that cross-reference recurring themes."-- "Spectrum Culture" "Radiant. . . . A visual feast and an illuminating global study."-- "Publishers Weekly" "The first major survey of communist poster art considers the visual legacy of propaganda graphic design in nations around the world."-- "Hyperallergic" "This volume presents and analyzes communist posters from around the world. . . . The images are of high quality throughout. The specific posters were chosen to highlight important artistic and political features of this type of communication within the social and political milieu. Particularly compelling is the discussion of posters and dissent in Eastern Europe. . . . This volume is an important addition to the work on communication and legitimation in communist countries. . . . Lars Muller Publishers Yes! No! Swiss Posters for Democracy: Poster
Book SynopsisThe Swiss population is called upon to participate actively in political decision-making processes through regular campaigns. These campaigns are often concerned with issues that heat up the emotions and lead to ideological battles. Swiss campaign posters, which have influenced opinion making since the beginning of the 20th century, bear testimony to direct democracy. This special form of political propaganda—prominently associated with Switzerland—is a sensitive indicator of socio-political moods and reflects both national mentalities and global tendencies. Yes! No! Posters for Democracy reveals the visual argumentation strategies and rhetorical approaches that have shaped the Swiss campaign poster from 1918 to the present. Clichéd exaggerations, undifferentiated simplifications, a repertoire of drastic motifs and abridged slo- gans correspond to the laws of the medium, which is oriented towards a manipulative appeal to the masses. Appeals to a sense of unity focus primarily on emotionalization, hardly on rational enlightenment. Subtly condensed messages or a graphically innovative language are hardly to be found in Swiss campaign posters. And yet many renowned designers created works that have inscribed themselves in the collective visual memory of the Swiss population and became icons of Swiss poster design.

Imperial War Museum British Posters of the Second World War
Book SynopsisKeep calm and carry on. In 1939, Britain s Ministry of Information produced this now-ubiquitous reminder to its citizens in the event of widely predicted air attacks. But in the six consecutive years before Germany s surrender to Allied forces, the British public would feel keenly both the physical and moral hardships of war. To boost morale and raise awareness of how citizens efforts might helpor hinderthe wartime effort, one of the most effective forms the British government had at its disposal was the poster. "British Posters of the Second World War" presents one hundred posters from this important period in world history. Some proclaimed in bold type that Victory of the Allies is assured and featured stalwart British soldiers alongside exaggerated enemy figures. Others, however, hung on the walls of bus and railway stations, town halls, and pubs, called for continued self-sufficiency, urging Britons to raise chickens and join pig clubs. As the threat of espionage came to be regarded as ever-present, another category of posters cautioned soldiers and civilians alike against talking about the war: Furtive Fritz is always listening warned one; another, Keep mumshe s not so dumb. Drawing on the Imperial War Museum s impressive collection of materials related to conflicts involving Britain in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, "British Posters of the Second World War" explores these campaigns and many others with an introduction and explanatory text by the museum s senior curator, Richard Slocombe."

Palazzo Editions Ltd The Art of Protest
Book SynopsisIn association with Amnesty International, with a foreword by Anish Kapoor. Against an increasingly polarizing political backdrop, The Art of Protest takes a visual journey through over a hundred years of social protest. From the early twentieth century suffragettes through to the 1960s and 1970s – considered by many the heyday of uprisings – and contemporary, social media-driven demonstrations of dissent, this illustrative history features iconic posters from world-renowned artists, including notable posters from the archives of Amnesty International, as well as more spontaneous ephemera from short-lived print collectives and street activists. With a foreword from celebrated artist and activist, Anish Kapoor, The Art of Protest showcases more than 100 posters. It covers key campaigns such as women's liberation, nuclear disarmament, the civil rights movement, climate change, AIDS activism, and Black Lives Matter, revealing artists who have pushed boundaries, given voice to the marginalised, and railed against those who seek to deny people their rights to peace and equality.Trade ReviewConsidering the current protests in Hong Kong, as well as Extinction Rebellion’s efforts in London and elsewhere, The Art of Protest feels like a particularly relevant book right now – and it’s fascinating to see how different designers have tackled the same issues over the years. * Creative Review *

He is Klimowski, unafraid.”—Harold Pinter, Nobel Prize-winning playwright In the mid-1970s, Andrzej Klimowski's fearlessly original artwork caught the eye of leading Polish theater and film companies, for whom he designed some of the period's most iconic posters. The London-born artist, who moved to Poland at a time when many East Europeans dreamed of going West, went on to create posters for works by filmmakers and playwrights from Scorsese to Altman, Beckett to Brecht. Drawing on folk art and Polish Surrealism, Klimowski uses techniques including photomontage and linocut to create posters that are filled with metaphor, drama, and originality. Trade Review“I savor everything about the Klimowski Poster Book by Andrzej Klimowski… Of course, I admire the freedom of poster conception, particularly the reinterpretations of mid-1970 (and after) American films, such as The Godfather, Nashville, Taxi Driver and Stranger Than Paradise, among many others.” Steven Heller, Print Magazine online “The Klimowski Poster Book is perfect for film buffs and design enthusiasts alike, highlighting the artist’s techniques including photomontage and linocut to create posters that are filled with metaphor, drama, and originality.” Graphic Design USA

Lars Muller Publishers Contemporary Iran: Poster Collection 35
Book SynopsisIranian graphic design looks back on a brief history. The first poster designers completed independent artistic training and created painterly-illustrative works in the 1960s. The simultaneous opening to the West under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi promoted global cultural exchange. With the proclamation of the Islamic Republic in 1979 and the First Gulf War (1980–1988), however, this was rapidly interrupted. At the end of the 1980s, a new generation of designers took up the graphic heritage of the pre-war period. At the turn of the millennium, the Iranian poster finally conquered international festivals and caused a great stir in the Western community. The volume Contemporary Iran brings together Iranian cultural posters from 1960 to the present. Despite the many different creative approaches, they always demonstrate the search for a fusion of history and contemporaneity, Iran’s own tradition and Western inspiration, art and everyday culture. An often unorthodox interpretation of Persian cultural heritage is combined with the confident use of computer-generated graphics. Thus, some posters confirm common Western notions of Islamic aesthetics, while others radically undermine them and irritate and surprise us.
