Search Press Ltd How to Draw: Kawaii Animals: In Simple Steps
Book SynopsisKawaii is a Japanese word meaning ‘super-cute’, and it’s a trend that’s sweeping the globe. Anything can be drawn in the kawaii style, from animals, people, vegetables and flowers to food, vehicles and household items. Here, expert comic book and manga artist Yishan Li shows you how to draw amazingly adorable animals in just a few simple steps. Draw the cutest rabbit you’ve ever seen, a playful panda, koala, fox, sheep and more. There are 28 different drawings to choose from, all full of personality and bubbling over with charm. Each one is developed in 8 easy stages from a rough sketch of the basic shapes through to the finished, coloured drawing, making this book suitable for adults and children of all ages and abilities.Trade ReviewA great book for beginners! It certainly is just that. I was impressed by the simplicity of the book but with excellent results. This book would make an ideal Birthday or Christmas gift for people of all ages, providing they like drawing or animals. I am someone who really and honestly cannot draw! I mean everyone can draw in some capacity but I draw most things badly, so I jumped at the chance to use these simple steps to improve my drawing abilities. The book is so easy to follow, with 8 simple steps to the general shape of the animals. And then you are free to add your own details. They give you inspiration with one coloured in and completely detailed animal per page, so you can attempt a similar end result. The steps are easy, you need a pencil, and I would recommend a rubber, so that you can erase any lines that you don’t need when you complete the finer details. Some lines are there to build shape but not needed at the end. There are all sorts of animals, fish and birds in this book, something for everyone’s tastes. I have given this book a 5-star review. It has something for everyone, with a variety of animals, easy steps to follow and it also gives people the freedom to add their own details, as well as getting great results. -- Sabrina Hackett-Saikul * severnwishes.co.uk *Great book, ideal for beginners! This book is fantastic and easy to follow. The animals couldn’t be any cuter! I find drawing animals freehand very difficult, but this book gives easy step by step applications so that anyone can give it a go. As I’ve practised I’ve gotten better and better at them too. An ideal book for anyone looking to improve their animal drawing skills whilst making them very cute too. -- Customer Review * Amazon *Table of ContentsPlayful puppy Cute kitten Chipmunk Rabbit Chameleon Love Birds Mouse Owl Prancing pony Sheep Cow Hen and chicks Elephant and calf Sloth Honey bear Baby tiger Leaping llama Tumbling panda Raccoon Gorilla Meerkat Koalas Happy hippo Singing frogs Shark Busy beaver Snake Tortoise

You could die laughing.” (Stephen King)“Cartoonist Gary Larson carries the macabre to hilarious lengths.” (The Wall Street Journal)“A magnificent contribution to popular culture.” (The Washington Post)“Samuel Taylor Coleridge, in between opium binges, once distinguished poetry from prose by noting that the former comprises ‘the best words in theirbest order.’ Gary Larson’s achievement in The Far Side® is to have pulled off much the same thing in a humbler medium: the best joke told with the best image … there is no excuse not to have some Larson in your life.” (The Daily Beast)“Larson communicates a great deal of information in a few simple ink lines. The expressions of his characters are vivid and immediately recognizable … And with just a strand of beads and a pair of harlequin glasses, he can somehow transfer any animal—a shark, a bug, a warthog—into a dowdy suburban hausfrau.” (The Los Angeles Times)“In an age when black humor is a lost art, Larson’s cartoon is an island of insanity, offering us theperspective of a world where the unreal is normal and vice versa. Its message deep down is a dark one — something about taking ourselves too seriously and strutting around as if we own the place.” (Rolling Stone)“Bless Gary Larson for his wonderful consistency in casting an artful eye on all of Earth’s wild critters, human or otherwise.” (The Philadelphia Inquirer)“The unofficial cartoonist laureate of the scientific community.” (Natural History Magazine)“The natural order of things goes seriously awry, with hilarious results.” (Smithsonian)“A quirky, brilliant series of cartons that most often feature a variety of insects and animals embroiled in some warped situation comedy.” (Toronto Globe and Mail)

There are so many different designs as well as different expressions to use. We couldn't get enough of it and have created so many cute pictures. It will be a book we will use again and again. -- Jennelee Baxta * Customer review *Arrived in the post for my 12 year old daughter yesterday and she immediately pulled out the sketchbooks and started drawing. She loves it! And it's supercute! She's delighted, I'm chuffed she's off her laptop, it's win-win! -- Helen O'Niell * Customer review *If you have bought the first two titles in this series you will know that kawaii is Japanese for cute. Now you have mastered drawing animals and objects it is the turn of food to get a cute makeover! It is simpler than I realised and these books all end up on my keeper shelf together with my collection on drawing in the manga style. If you find this difficult rest assured that making things look cuter in the Japanese style is a whole lot easier. The first few pages show how to simplify your drawings and looks at what makes something look cute. Then you can start drawing with the simple, staged projects. You only need basic materials such as pencils, pens, paper etc making this an inexpensive way to make your mark. The book is divided into chapters so you can choose from depicting snacks, entrees, desserts and drinks. Main meals are incorporated into entrees for some reason. Each item takes up a double page spread and shows how you can build up a drawing, adding colour and also how to vary it. Popcorn kernels can be shown on their own or in a machine for example. Chocolate can be a bar or in fancy shapes. Helpfully each chapter starts with a page of thumbnail sketches of each item so making your choice of what to draw is easy. There aren’t any projects included but it is not hard to envisage your cute drawings looking great on anything from greetings cards to T-Shirts. I hope there will be more titles in the Draw Cute series. -- Rachel A Hyde * MyShelf.com *During the Summer holidays we were gifted a copy of Kawaii: How to Draw Really Cute Food by Angela Nguyen. I love to try new things and quite fancied trying my hand at kawaii. Have you heard of the word kawaii before? It is Japanese for ‘cute’ and covers everything from food to clothes and toys. Kawaii: How to Draw Really Cute Food I thought I would get a chance to look through this book and try out some of the projects for myself. Sadly my 9 year old took the book as soon as he saw it! My son just loves to draw and learn new things so he set himself up at the table with the book, his favourite coloured pencils and plenty of paper. The book is really well set out with step-by-step instructions and minimal text. It’s great for both visual learners and those interested in learning the essential techniques of kawaii. My son loved reading the book and was soon drawing away. Artist-author Angela Nguyen turns even the most mundane foods into living, breathing, adorable characters that you will want to draw yourself. A perfect book for beginners – add cute-appeal to your furry 'n' feathered companions in no time at all! Other title in the series is the incredibly popular Kawaii: How to Draw Really Cute Stuff Trade Review'Kawaii' is Japanese for cute, and here is the sequel to Kawaii: How To Draw Really Cute Stuff. In this book you can find out how to draw all kinds of animals in a cute manner and discover how to make your drawings look this way. You only need the minimum of drawing materials to draw anything in this book and you probably already own them. You also don’t need to be an artist as it is surprisingly simple to draw in this style; far more so than in the style associated with manga. The introduction explains quickly and simply with examples how to make your drawings look cute and appealing. The rest of the book contains the projects, which are divided into where the animals are found. There are pets and common wild animals, ones found in jungles, forest/grassland, water and on the farm. Choose from favourites like cats, dogs, penguins, owls and even dinosaurs or try a more unusual creature like a red panda, stingray, platypus or armadillo. Each animal is shown in several simple steps over two pages together with a fact about it and several poses to try. Unlike the first book this one is more of a workbook as the second page of each project has a drawing to finish and colour in yourself. This is a great way of practising and creating some scenes without having to wonder what to draw. Learn the cartoon shorthand of depicting moods, movement and more – it is surprisingly easy and fun, suitable for all ages and levels of art experience and rather addictive. It is also a great way of making original and personal greetings cards or any other decorative project and like its companion volume one for the keeper shelf. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *Table of ContentsEnter Planet Cute (Introduction) Chapter One: Getting Started Chapter Two: Close to Home - Learn to draw animals that we encounter every day in our immediate surroundings and homes Chapter Three: On the Farm - Get introduced to a whole barnyard of cute critters! Spanning the last several years of their lives and told through four-color cartoons, family photos, and documents, and a narrative as rife with laughs as it is with tears, Chast's memoir is both comfort and comic relief for anyone experiencing the life-altering loss of elderly parents. While the particulars are Chast-ian in their idiosyncrasies--an anxious father who had relied heavily on his wife for stability as he slipped into dementia and a former assistant principal mother whose overbearing personality had sidelined Roz for decades--the themes are universal: adult children accepting a parental role; aging and unstable parents leaving a family home for an institution; dealing with uncomfortable physical intimacies; and hiring strangers to provide the most personal care. An amazing portrait of two lives at their end and an only child coping as best she can, Can''t We Talk about Something More Pleasant shows the full range of Roz Chast's talent as cartoonist and storyteller.

Taschen GmbH Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse. The Ultimate History.
Book SynopsisOn November 18, 1928, the world’s most famous Mouse made his very first public debut. Today, we celebrate 90+ years of Mickey in one of the most expansive illustrated publications on the Disney universe. Starting with the first sketches of a character who was almost named Mortimer, we trace the career of Walt Disney’s and Ub Iwerks’s most famous creation, one met with an explosion of worldwide popularity preceded only by the earlier successes of Charlie Chaplin. With unlimited access to Disney’s vast historical collections as well as public and private collections, the authors bring Mickey’s success story to life: concept art, story sketches, background paintings, and animation drawings as well as historical photographs trace the origins and evolution of such timeless favorites as Steamboat Willie, The Band Concert, and Brave Little Tailor. They also follow Mickey as he builds on this legendary library of short cartoons by appearing in two historic feature-length films, Fantasia and Fun and Fancy Free. Extensive archival research sheds new light on little-known chapters of Mickey’s career, the origins of the Mickey Mouse Club, and his use as a patriotic icon during World War II. Along the way, we encounter the work of all major Mickey artists in both film and comics, including such greats as Ub Iwerks, Win Smith, Ferdinand Horvath, Fred Moore, Floyd Gottfredson, Carl Barks, Manuel Gonzales, Paul Murry, Romano Scarpa, Giorgio Cavazzano, Byron Erickson, and César Ferioli. Mickey Mouse has left an indelible mark on everyday culture as well as high art, becoming a favored subject for Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Roy Lichtenstein. As Walt Disney once said: “I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing—that it was all started by a mouse.” And an end to the success story is nowhere in sight. Today, 90+ years after his creation, Mickey remains as lovable and popular as ever. Let’s pay tribute to the little fellow, his legend, and his legacy with a monument to the one and only Mickey Mouse.
