Books by Miguel De Cervantes

Portrait of Miguel De Cervantes

Miguel de Cervantes, often hailed as the father of the modern novel, transformed European literature with his timeless masterpiece exploring imagination, identity, and the blurred line between reality and illusion. His writing brims with wit, humanity, and a keen observation of social ideals, offering readers both humour and poignant reflection.

Born in sixteenth‑century Spain, Cervantes led a life as adventurous as his characters, from soldiering and captivity to literary triumph. His enduring influence continues to shape storytelling across centuries, making his works essential reading for anyone intrigued by the origins of the novel and the enduring power of satire.

Book SynopsisTranslated by P. A. Motteux With an Introduction and Notes by Stephen Boyd, University College, Cork Cervantes’ tale of the deranged gentleman who turns knight-errant, tilts at windmills and battles with sheep in the service of the lady of his dreams, Dulcinea del Toboso, has fascinated generations of readers, and inspired other creative artists such as Flaubert, Picasso and Richard Strauss. The tall, thin knight and his short, fat squire, Sancho Panza, have found their way into films, cartoons and even computer games. Supposedly intended as a parody of the most popular escapist fiction of the day, the ‘books of chivalry’, this precursor of the modern novel broadened and deepened into a sophisticated, comic account of the contradictions of human nature. On his ‘heroic’ journey Don Quixote meets characters of every class and condition, from the prostitute Maritornes, who is commended for her Christian charity, to the Knight of the Green Coat, who seems to embody some of the constraints of virtue. Cervantes’ greatest work can be enjoyed on many levels, all suffused with a subtle irony that reaches out to encompass the reader, and does not leave the author outside its circle. Peter Motteux’s fine eighteenth-century translation, acknowledged as one of the best, brilliantly succeeds in communicating the spirit of the original Spanish.

Book SynopsisMiguel De Cervantes (Author) Miguel de Cervantes was born on September 29, 1547, in Alcala de Henares, Spain. At twenty-three he enlisted in the Spanish militia and in 1571 fought against the Turks in the battle of Lepanto, where a gunshot wound permanently crippled his left hand. He spent four more years at sea and then another five as a slave after being captured by Barbary pirates. Ransomed by his family, he returned to Madrid but his disability hampered him; it was in debtor's prison that he began to write Don Quixote. Cervantes wrote many other works, including poems and plays, but he remains best known as the author of Don Quixote. He died on April 23, 1616.Edith Grossman (Translator) Edith Grossman is the award-winning translator of major works by many of Latin America's most important writers. Book SynopsisEdith Grossman, celebrated for her brilliant translation of Don Quixote, offers a dazzling new version of another Cervantes classicTrade Review“For most English-language readers, Cervantes is a one-book wonder. But these twelve novellas, newly translated by the virtuosic Edith Grossman, are a revelation to us. They are a feast for Cervantes’ admirers, and stand truly by themselves—witty, naughty, trenchant, smart, widely ranging, thoroughly modern and readable. Coming late in Cervantes’ life, they are a sly and mischievous and memorable adiós—just as we would expect.”—Richard Ford“Exemplary Novels spans nearly the whole creative life of Cervantes. . . . The book is like a summing up of Cervantes’s fiction, displaying its broad range of topics, characters, styles, and plots.”—Roberto González Echevarría, author of Cervantes’ Don Quixote (Open Yale Course Series)“It seems appropriate that Edith Grossman publishes her translation of the Exemplary Novels thirteen years after the printing of her masterful translation of Don Quijote, as it took Cervantes ten years to come out with his second part of Don Quijote. Thus the supreme English translation of the best novel ever written on this side of the galaxy both precedes and follows the colloquy of Cipión and Berganza, as the wise words of both dogs precede and proceed those of the knight and the squire on their painful search for the meaning of human identity.”—Carlos Rojas“Finally we have a worthy translation of Cervantes’s Exemplary Novels, the extraordinary follow-up to Don Quixote that enchanted generations of readers, but that has not been widely available to English readers in a version that approaches the sparkling original. Reading Edith Grossman’s gorgeous prose is like traveling to a far-off place, unearthing a hidden container, and finding in it a glove that slips onto your hand like a second skin.”—William Egginton, author of The Man Who Invented Fiction: How Cervantes Ushered in the Modern World“Edith Grossman is one of the best Hispanists in the English language world and an extraordinary translator. Her version of the Quijote, which appeared a few years ago, was unanimously celebrated, and the same will no doubt happen with this new version of Cervantes’s Exemplary Novels.”—Mario Vargas Llosa

Book SynopsisTrade Review“[A] rambunctious homage, which retells famous episodes from the Spanish classic but sets them alongside capsule histories of Miguel de Cervantes’s life and the novel’s reception, as well as fourth wall-crashing ruminations on its outsized cultural influence. If you’ve ever wondered what Don Quixote would say if he saw ‘Man of La Mancha’ on Broadway, this is the book for you.”—The Wall Street Journal“[Stavans and Weil] succeed in bringing to life the spirit of the original’s mix of absurdity, serious-minded morality, and its thesis that ideas are often more important than reality.”—Publishers Weekly“Dynamic duo Ilan Stavans and Roberto Weil have recreated the classic Don Quixote as a virtuoso extravaganza that crisscrosses English and Spanish with a vibrant palette of color and visual artistry. With both an English and a Spanglish edition, we Latinxs finally get our own Quixote, and the world gets a playful, smart, and visually multilayered twenty-first-century Quixote. Don Quixote of La Mancha warmly invites us all to relish its resplendent in-between spaces of language, identity, and nation.”—Frederick Luis Aldama, author of Latinx Superheroes in Mainstream Comics“What is de Cervantes’s 17th-century novel really about? Why does it matter? After reading this graphic adaptation from Stavans and Weil, one remains blissfully confused, albeit sensing the ineffable absurdity of storytelling and questioning the nature of narrative in the modern age.”—Library Journal

Book Synopsis“Don Quixote looms so wonderfully above the skylines of literature, a gaunt giant on a lean nag, that the book lives and will live through his sheer vitality…The parody has become a paragon.”-Vladimir Nabokov “A more profound and powerful work than this is not to be met with…The final and greatest utterance of the human mind.”- Fyodor Dostoyevsky Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote is regarded not only as the first modern novel, but also as one of the most important works of fiction ever produced. The subtle and hopeful irony, resplendent variety of characters and its thoroughly entertaining sense of adventure and friendship has dazzled readers for more than four hundred years. It was published in Spain in two volumes, first in 1605 then followed by the second in 1615. Cervantes’ use of realism and everyday language in Don Quixote was revolutionary at the time, and its influence on the development of literature may only be surpassed by the work of Shakespeare. In the opening of this extraordinary book, Alonso Quijano, a noble living in sixteenth-century Spain, has become consumed with the act of reading, and subsequently assumes the identity of the chivalrous knights that he loves to read about. Transformed into Don Quixote, he embarks on his first ill-fated journey as a “knight”. The defeated Quixote returns home, to only prepare himself better for the next adventure of delusion. On his second journey Quixote has enlisted the peasant Sancho Panza to appropriate the role of his squire. Although the duo is ridiculously mismatched in every sense, their inextricable bond is one of the most fascinating of friendships ever created on paper. Between their disordered adventures -of battling windmills and herds of sheep and endless mishaps- are the stories of those who are encountered on the journey. The book eventually becomes a hall of mirrors, and Cervantes explores preconceptions of narrative, reliability, and morality that are strikingly modern. Ultimately, Quixote’s preposterous fantasies become haunting as the reader of this book will surely begin to question what is real and what is not. The story of Don Quixote has been adapted into numerous forms, including opera, musicals, ballets, music and film. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Don Quixote is both modern and readable.
