The History Press Ltd Frank Sutcliffe: Photographer of Whitby
Book Synopsis‘His photographic skills enabled him to convert what he felt about Whitby and the countryside around it—the feelings he carried inside himself from the time he came from smoky Leeds as a child to first see the coast—into a visual tribute which goes far beyond mere documentary recording.’As one of the first men to devote his life and creative energy to photography, Frank Sutcliffe moved away from the confines of Victorian photographic conventions, which were based on artifice, and set himself the task of photographing the people and the countryside that he saw around him in as truthful and straightforward a manner as his equipment would allow. Despite his rarely leaving Whitby, Sutcliffe's work was known, exhibited and printed all over the world.Michael Hiley has traced Sutcliffe's writings on photography, many of which are to be found only in newspaper archives and specialist photographic libraries. As the son of a painter, Sutcliffe was aware both of the unique qualities of photography and of the debt it owed to painting. The years of his greatest success were those of unprecedented upheaval in both painting and photography, and Frank Sutcliffe: Photographer of Whitby sets out to establish the relationship between Sutcliffe's work and that of the leading photographers and painters of his time.

Historic England Stonehenge: A History in Photographs
Book SynopsisStonehenge is the world's most famous pre-historic monument and, since the middle of the 19th century, probably the most photographed. This book is a celebration of Stonehenge, in fascinating and often very human images. The text is written by archaeologist and television presenter Julian Richards, someone with a genuine love of Stonehenge. This is a book for all who share a fascination with this magical monument. Nonsuch Publishing Cheltenham at War in Old Photographs: Britain in
Book SynopsisDuring the Second World War photographic film was rationed and photography was strictly controlled. Despite these limitations it is surprising how many pictures of the war years have survived, often hidden away in photograph albums or school and company archives, never seen by the general public. Cheltenham at War, however, brings together over two hundred of these unique images. Well-researched captions put the photographs in context, and contain many fascinating details of life during the war. The emphasis throughout Cheltenham at War is on people - despairing at the bomb damage, pulling together in salvage campaigns and rejoicing at the victory that followed. Schools were evacuated, evacuees and prisoners of war arrived and there was even a mock invasion, but a semblance of normality was maintained: for example, football and cricket teams still competed and weddings took place. These events are also recorded here. This book will evoke nostalgic memories for all who spent their war years in the town, and will be of interest to everyone who knows and loves Cheltenham.

Taschen GmbH Eugène Atget. Paris
Book SynopsisA flâneur and photographer at once, Eugène Atget (1857–1927) was obsessed with walking the streets. After trying his hand at painting and acting, the native of Libourne turned to photography and moved to Paris. He supplied studies for painters, architects, and stage designers, but became enraptured by what he called “documents” of the city and its environs. His scenes rarely included people, but rather the architecture, landscape, and artifacts that made up the societal and cultural stage. Atget was not particularly renowned during his lifetime but in the 1920s came to the attention of the Dada and Surrealist avant-garde through Man Ray. Four of his images, with their particular fusion of mimesis and mystery, appeared in the surrealist journal, La Révolution Surréaliste, while Ray and much of his artistic circle purchased Atget prints. Atget’s fame grew after his death, with several articles and a monograph by Berenice Abbott. Several leading photographers, including Walker Evans and Bill Brandt, have since acknowledged their debt to Atget. This fresh TASCHEN edition gathers some 500 photographs from the Atget archives at Musée Carnavalet and the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris to celebrate his outstanding eye for the urban environment and evocation of a Paris gone by. Down main streets and side streets, past shops and churches, through courtyards and arcades and the 20 arrondissements, we find a unique portrait of a beloved city and the making of a modern photographic master.

Arnoldsche Japan in Early Photographs: The Aime Humbert
Book SynopsisPhotographs taken in Japan between the late Edo period and early Meiji periods found their way overseas, and played a major role in forming Westerners' image of Japan. Among these collections, the pictures gathered by the Swiss diplomat Aime Humbert (1819-1900) in the 1860s were crucial in building lasting representations of the island nation: many of these, mainly collected in 1863/64 during a sojourn in Yokohama and Edo, were used as sources for the well-known and largely distributed engravings of his famous book Le Japon illustre, published in Paris in 1870. Belonging to the collection of the MEN, these beautiful and well-preserved photographs are published here for the first time. Presented by Japanese and Swiss scholars before the narrative backdrop of their acquisition and application by foreigners, they offer a striking view of a lost world.

Amberley Publishing Stamford Through Time
Book SynopsisStamford has a reputation for being one of England's finest stone towns. It is a happy mix of medieval and Georgian architecture that was untouched by the Industrial Revolution or later large scale developments, so its central core has survived remarkably intact. Its architecture is outstanding and for this reason, in 1967, it became the country's first conservation area. In recent years the town has become a popular tourist destination for both home and overseas visitors. It has also attracted the attention of film makers who have been quick to see its potential as a back-drop for such TV productions as Middlemarch and Pride and Prejudice. Using contrasting photographs, this book sets out to show something of both the continuity and change in the town during the last 100 years.

Gill Return to Sender
Book SynopsisJohn Hinde was a pioneer of colour photography and one of the most successful postcard publishers in the world. His largest collection of postcards celebrated Ireland. He portrayed an island brightened by his imagination, a place where children were red-haired and freckled, the sun always shining, and the sky forever blue. His idealistic images were to become the stereotypical portrayal of Ireland for many years, and to this day elicit feelings of nostalgia from viewers worldwide.Return to Sender pairs Hinde's iconic, instantly recognisable postcards from the 1950s, 60s and 70s with corresponding contemporary photographs. The side-by-side contrast of these then-and-now photographs, wonderfully captured by photographer Paul Kelly, illustrates the ways Ireland's rural and urban landscapes have changed over the decades or, in some places, not changed at all.

Gill In Hinde Sight Postcards from Ireland Past
Book SynopsisDespite the famously uncooperative Irish weather, John Hinde's postcards of Ireland featured bright sunshine and blue skies, a country seemingly peopled entirely with redheads, happy donkeys carrying turf, and charming cottages that appeared to grow upward from the earth itself. Cars and sweaters were in primary colours, and scarlet rhododendrons sprang up in the unlikeliest of places.John Hinde had a clear vision: We need to be uplifted rather than depressed. To me pictures should always convey a positive, good feeling, something which makes people happy, which makes them smile, which makes them appreciate some tenderness.'In these postcards, the world is a sunnier, less complicated and more colourful place. Join Paul Kelly as he returns to John Hinde's Ireland on a photographic pilgrimage, capturing some places that have changed forever, and some that are just the same.

Book SynopsisFriday nights were bath nights. Immediately after tea we were given a good scrub with the brushes the girls used on the floor. No fancy smelling soaps, just carbolic and should this get into your eyes it really was painful. Then we were given a flannel nightshirt each. Some only just covered our knees because they had already been cut down to repair other nightshirts. Then we were lined up in front of the Matron who gave us a dose of brimstone and treacle then off to bed. Such was the fear and dread of ''ending one''s days in the workhouse'' that even in recent years older people could recall the feelings of horror that such a threat conjured up.That a system introduced to help the poor and a destitute could become such a reviled and feared institution is a mystery to most of us today but a study of it can repay with a better understanding of a broader social, political, economic and eve architectural history of Britain. The History Press Ltd Nottingham in the 1960s and 70s
Book SynopsisIn the 1960s the citizens of Nottingham saw the greatest change in the city in the twentieth century. In the previous decade, the city planners envisaged a dual carriageway which would encircle the centre of Nottingham and they began by building a new highway from Castle Boulevard to Friar Lane. Many slum properties were demolished in the area around Walnut Tree Lane near the castle, but a number of historic buildings were also swept away in the construction of the new road - notably Collin''s Almshouses and St Nicholas'' Rectory. The construction of the Broad Marsh Shopping Centre, complementing the Victoria Centre, was equally contentious. Featuring over 200 photographs from archives and local people''s collections revealing the Nottingham of yesteryear, this book is guaranteed to be of interest to anyone who has ever lived in or visited this great city.

The History Press Ltd Chepstow and the River Wye
Book SynopsisThe beauty of the lower reaches of the River Wye is famous. Many writers and artists have tried to capture the splendour of the scenery and the dramatic views afforded by the ruins of Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle. The arrival of the camera provided a new way of capturing these memorable scenes, and even today, the snapshots and postcards show remarkably similar views of the valley''s landmarks. Through the photographs in this album the viewer may travel around the town of Chepstow, cross the river to Beachley, Sedbury and Tutshill, and voyage up the Wye to Tintern stopping, like tourists of old, to look at Piercefield and explore the Wyndcliff. This selection of photographs, drawn from collections at Chepstow Museum, focuses as much on the people - working, playing and celebrating - as it does on the place. The collection of photographs is preserved at the Museum for the enjoyment and enlightenment of future generations as well.

However, the Middlesbrough of the last years of the twentieth century is almost unrecognisable from the town of fifty and more years ago. That Middlesbrough with its iron and steel works, its docks and shipyards and its tightly packed terraces of Victorian houses is a Middlesbrough now gone, a Middlesbrough that was and a Middlesbrough of memories past. In this book, Araf Chohan offers the reader the opportunity to travel back to see the Middlesbrough that existed before the changes of recent years took their toll and altered the urban townscape forever.
