Gill In Hinde Sight Postcards from Ireland Past
Book SynopsisDespite the famously uncooperative Irish weather, John Hinde's postcards of Ireland featured bright sunshine and blue skies, a country seemingly peopled entirely with redheads, happy donkeys carrying turf, and charming cottages that appeared to grow upward from the earth itself. Cars and sweaters were in primary colours, and scarlet rhododendrons sprang up in the unlikeliest of places.John Hinde had a clear vision: We need to be uplifted rather than depressed. To me pictures should always convey a positive, good feeling, something which makes people happy, which makes them smile, which makes them appreciate some tenderness.'In these postcards, the world is a sunnier, less complicated and more colourful place. Join Paul Kelly as he returns to John Hinde's Ireland on a photographic pilgrimage, capturing some places that have changed forever, and some that are just the same.

Taschen GmbH Eugène Atget. Paris
Book SynopsisA flâneur and photographer at once, Eugène Atget (1857–1927) was obsessed with walking the streets. After trying his hand at painting and acting, the native of Libourne turned to photography and moved to Paris. He supplied studies for painters, architects, and stage designers, but became enraptured by what he called “documents” of the city and its environs. His scenes rarely included people, but rather the architecture, landscape, and artifacts that made up the societal and cultural stage. Atget was not particularly renowned during his lifetime but in the 1920s came to the attention of the Dada and Surrealist avant-garde through Man Ray. Four of his images, with their particular fusion of mimesis and mystery, appeared in the surrealist journal, La Révolution Surréaliste, while Ray and much of his artistic circle purchased Atget prints. Atget’s fame grew after his death, with several articles and a monograph by Berenice Abbott. Several leading photographers, including Walker Evans and Bill Brandt, have since acknowledged their debt to Atget. This fresh TASCHEN edition gathers some 500 photographs from the Atget archives at Musée Carnavalet and the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris to celebrate his outstanding eye for the urban environment and evocation of a Paris gone by. Down main streets and side streets, past shops and churches, through courtyards and arcades and the 20 arrondissements, we find a unique portrait of a beloved city and the making of a modern photographic master.

Amberley Publishing Lowestoft & the Suffolk Coast Through Time
Book SynopsisLowestoft, on the Sunrise Coast, is as far east as you can be in the United Kingdom without getting your feet wet. Once a major fishing port, the town was reinvented by Samuel Morton Peto in the nineteenth century as a resort to rival Brighton. Suffering from the decline of these industries, Lowestoft now seeks to become the onshore centre for the renewable energies industry. Michael Rouse's photographs chart some of these changes, from the loss of the old fishing industry to the town's need to cater for modern holidaymakers with car parks and enhancement schemes along the beautiful South Beach. He travels outside Lowestoft to the once sea-threatened villages of Pakefield and Kessingland, to the crumbling cliffs of Corton and its holiday villages, and finally to the colourful Oulton Broad.

HarperCollins Publishers Postcard From The Past
Book SynopsisWITH AN INTRODUCTION BY MARK HADDONIn Postcard From The Past, Tom Jackson has gathered a collection of the funniest, weirdest and most moving real messages from the backs of old postcards.Sublimely funny' Jason Hazeley, author of the Ladybird Books for Grown UpsMy favourite Twitter account is now my favourite book. Inspiring. Educational. Hilarious' Emma FreudOne of the saddest and funniest picture books you''re ever likely to read' Owen Hatherley, author of The Ministry of NostalgiaHiTrade Review‘Resurrecting these postcards, relics of forgotten times and forgotten holidays, was the simplest and most brilliant idea. Tom Jackson combines the images with just a few of the words scribbled on the back, and his eye for the choice sentence, the perfect phrase, is miraculous. Thanks to his assiduous, obsessive work as collector and curator, each one of these postcards becomes a poem, a short story, an elegy for lost England, a work of art’ Jonathan Coe ‘What a funny, clever, poignant idea. Postcard From The Past contains not just 150 very short stories, each one of which bears comparison with the work of Alan Bennett, Stevie Smith and Marcel Proust, but also lovely, picturesque views of coves, chines, promenades, escarpments and the Museum and Art Gallery, Doncaster. You will wish you were there’ Andy Miller, author of The Year of Reading Dangerously ‘A deadpan miscellany of wan nostalgia, profound melancholy, stoic humour and inexplicable dread. The necessary survival text for post-Brexit Britain’ Andrew Male 'I loved this book so very much. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, this is a beautiful collection of tiny windows into the stories of other people's lives’ Joanna Cannon, author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep ‘Brilliant and hilarious’ Jeremy Dyson, The League of Gentlemen ‘The most addictively British Twitter feed ever has become a book. I may never leave the house again’ Viv Groskop ‘Each card is like an unfinished one act play. Amberley Publishing Whitby Yards Through Time
Book SynopsisTo visit Whitby's 'Yards' is to step back in time. Hardly changed from the Middle Ages, this is where one can still meet old Whitby - a secret Whitby - unspoilt and untroubled by the holiday visitor. The yards, alleyways and ghauts are fascinating places to explore. Though often private, there are enough remaining to catch a glimpse of what this small seaport must have been like two or three hundred years ago. Today, over eighty named yards still exist out of more than one hundred and there are, in addition, another thirty or so places of similar character but perhaps called 'steps', 'lane', 'square' or 'place'. The origins of the yards lay in the days of medieval Whitby and its development. Join Alan Whitworth on this affectionate and lavishly illustrated account, which will surprise and delight anyone who knows the area.
